A former Buccaneer talks offense

What do the Buccaneers do well?

The wiseass might say, “lose.” But in all seriousness, it’s a critical question as Tampa Bay tries to salvage something from the season and the Lovie Smith regime attempts to evaluate its needs.

Former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht doesn’t have answers. It’s his opinion that the Bucs are too inconsistent offensively to get a solid gauge on the strengths of any offensive area.

“You don’t have anything to hang your hat on right now,” Becht said of the Bucs offense. “You gotta have something, where you see over a three-game stand minimum in my opinion, where you can say, ‘OK, this is who we are, this is what we can be, and we can build off that,'” Becht said this afternoon on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620.

It seemed the only thing Becht is high on is the play of Mike Evans. He likes the talent of Austin Seferian-Jenkins but said he’s on a steep rollercoaster this season. Typical rookie, Joe will add.

Yes, the Bucs offense needs some sort of identity — other than being anemic in first halves.

What a chore it would be for Jason Licht and Lovie Smith to enter the offseason unsure of nearly the entire offense, from the quarterback to the entire offensive line, to tight ends and running backs. Oh, yeah, don’t forget offensive coordinator.

Someone needs to ask that of Lovie in a press conference. I’m curious what his opinion is of anything the team does well (sans the typical double-talk).

This team is the closest thing I have seen to the bucs of the mid 70’s and late 80’s . Totaly pathetic ! Becht is right… we don’t do anything well except repeat the same mistakes over and over again. I leave that all on the coaching staff, especialy since this roster is better than the dolphins, cheifs, chargers, bills, brown ect who are all in playoff contention and we are in by far the worst division in football.

DAM JOE! You always find a way to defend your man “typical rookie.” Get off his FUKN jock man $hit. Just because he’s a rookie doesn’t mean he’s excused from producing on the field. As the championship BUCS used to say, “there isn’t a second or third string on the team. We Are all starters when we are on the field.” Thats the attitude they all had. When on the field you play like a starter. Period. And your MAN BEEF is not cutting it.

I always enjoy Becht’s comments Joe. Thanks for putting them out there.

The team is much like their HC. It lacks personality.

I can sum the entire season up in 5 words.

    underperforming offensive, and defensive line

My question is “Are our offensive, and defensive lines underachieving or have they maxed their potential? Can they get better or is this really it?

How about throwing the ball up to these damn recievers. Draw up a damn game plan and unleaah mike evans. Vjax still can go deep. ASJ 6’6 that alone should let him occupy the middle of the field and free up evans and vjax for vBulletin 1 on 1s. I don’t get to watch buc games in VA so I don’t know exactly what we are or not doing

They are making huge mistakes at crucial times throughout the game.
Even when we go on a 16 play drive, we had to settle for a 51 yard field goal.

I think that sums up the season really.

  9. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

They can hang their hat on getting up on an opponent in the 4th QTR to have the defense give it back to the opponent.

*yawn…is there anything more boring than a sponsored evaluation…nothing we already didn’t know…keep moving

  11. billy buckaroo Says:

I’m not sure there is even a hat

  12. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Things to hang your hat on if you are L&L: thats a tough one. I guess I can come up with 2: Mike Evans looks like he has promise (but so did Michael Clayton his rookie year…) and the rookie kicker Patrick Murray; he does seem to have a good leg; hell the Bucs should consider using him as the punter and for kickoffs as Koenan has really dropped off on both punts inside the 20 and touchbacks on kickoffs but knowing the Bucs luck the Fordham kid would probably get a season ending injury trying to tackle on a return; its been that type off season in BucLand…..

biff barker…like I’ve noted before. Personality is a key element to be a successful head coach imo.
