Joe has written how the Bucs, sans wins, are in dire need of drama. Fans claim they don’t like it, but, oh, they very much do.
What is the most popular date on the NFL calendar after the Super Bowl and the opening weekend of the regular season? The first day of the draft. The draft has nothing to do with an athletic competition but every thing to do with suspense and drama.
Joe was just looking at his traffic numbers last night. The most popular days for Joe’s readers this year were in May. What happened in May? Three days of the draft.
So when a team is losing the drama sometimes distracts fans from just how bad a team is. Case in point was last year’s MRSA/mental Josh Freeman circus that marred then-commander Greg Schiano’s season. Fans were engaged.
This year? Little drama, no excitement, just week after awful week of losing. The Bucs are the Jacksonville Jaguars sans a quarterback with a hot model girlfriend. As Chucky would say, “There’s no juice, man!” They just smell like a rotted fish.
The very worst thing that can happen to a franchise is apathy, and that is what spreads when a team loses and is duller than dishwater. It often takes years to get the turned off fans back.
That seems to be happening to Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski, “The Commish,” of Scout.com. The former voice of the Buccaneers Radio Network studio shows and long-time season ticket holder is finally fed up. Years of losing with no hope in the near future, and a boring team has finally gotten to Justin. He wrote an emotional story of the anguish Bucs fans feel these days.
Honestly, I was surprised more than 46,000 people would go to Sunday’s embarrassing matchup and the return to Josh McCown as the Bucs starting quarterback. Then again, I’m sure a lot of those tickets were purchased before the season began when fans were duped into believing their franchise had actually gotten better.
The Bucs are giving their fans zero reason to come to games anymore. The defense is an opposing slumping offense’s dream and the Bucs offense is dreadfully boring with little hope. Special teams is an absolute joke led by a punter who barely punts it 30 yards. The in-stadium experience is pathetic from outdated video boards to the playing of the song “YMCA” after a game-tying touchdown in the 2nd quarter.
One can feel the pain in Justin’s bones reading that story. It is almost like he is going through a divorce (no, Justin’s homelife is great. He and his wonderful wife just welcomed a baby girl to the world. Kudos, Justin!).
Joe has no earthly idea what the Lovie Smith administration has in store for the offseason or who he will hire as an offensive coordinator. In a lot of ways, the Bucs are painted into a corner for next year — a crossroads season for the franchise.
But that is for a dozen future posts (at least).

I am afraid NFL is rapidly transitioning into a TV Show…it is not just the Bucs….it is speading league wide….Mark Cuban was corrrect….

Is it me or has the league created an atmosphere of anti parity? I don’t mean to dismiss the good teams that are always good and that bad teams always are bad. There is a reason for that and that is the fish stinks from the head. Bad owners (not caring) bad coaching and lack of talent will keep you in the cellar year after year.
What I’m talking about is how Fantasy Football has taken over the NFL. They change rules to protect QB’s and Receivers. All in the name of pinball scores. But the product they put on the field/TV is unbearable to watch. I can’t think of one prime time game this year that was fun to watch. Every one of them have been a curb stomping and I change the channel at halftime. is that what the NFL (or it’s advertisers) want? If so, they may lose a lot more.

The massive TV rights package makes ticket sales less important to owners. They can turn a profit and escallating asset value without strong ticket sales.
Regardless of W/L record, its still entertaining to go to a live game…..just the tailgating scene is enjoyable. And…..misery loves company!!!

This fan base has been abused far worse than this in the past. Start winning again and they’ll ALL come back. It’s not rocket science – just win. And they will win again.
My only concern is that this keeps going and the relocation bandwagon starts making the rounds pointing out the Bucs as a target due to fan apathy – caused directly by their losing. That happen in 1995-1996 and a lot of people were sure the Bucs would be a relocation candidate. That would be a travesty, but this is a dog-eat-dog world and there are a lot of cities that would sell their souls to have a dog NFL franchise.

Justin is right. As a former 26 year season ticket holder i think i have a pretty good handle on what is good football and whats bad. I bought tickets for the Atlanta game before the season started, thinking the team was on the right track. But half way through the first half i turned to my son and said this game is boring , there is no excitement even when they have a good play. The video boards suck, Glazers memo, upgrade the boards for your suffering fans!!!!! So what im trying to say is losing is one thing,but to lose the the way the bucs have the last few years ,makes you feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, we just suck with no end in sight!!! PS Bucs win a home game!!!

It’s hard to root for this team… I can’t remember ever being able to feel confident in this team, even the glory years (some people act like it was a dynasty), most every game was still a low scoring, dull, nail-biter.
The stadium sucks, the fan experience is lame and mostly because of how bad the team is. There is NO home field advantage and it’s not FUN watching this team.
The Sucs make their fans feel like the losers and that is the main problem here.
They systematically destroy every Sunday for 16 weeks, every f***ing year.

The Bucs have been a terrible team for the last several years b/c of poor drafting & not developing players. Some draft picks from the last 3 – 4 years aren’t even on the team, I mean think about it!? They were either busts or they were traded away. L & L are here to hit the reset button “PERIOD!” Why do think Lovie says the same thing every week? It’s b/c he knows we’re not a good team. At some point they realized (Glazers) that doing the same thing over & over an expecting a different result isn’t working.

I am wondering with the way the players are playing, how bad the games are going, how bad lovie is running things and constantly talking gibberish, What OC in his right mind with any gift of running a successful offense would link himself to this and stake his career on this….
Few may think one will because it is – Lovie Smith – but be real with yourself… This is not the “Lovie” some make him out to be!
On that line of thinking, what talented player, if given a choice of other teams, would agree to join this debacle and miss out on a better chance of a winning team?
The Jim Harbaugh as HC scenario could have a chance to work out nicely but the chances of that are slim to none!

You know what worse than the losing….and that is going back to preseason….I have not seen one thing I can identify with ..as OH…I can see where this team is going…I can see what this team is trying to do…..did Lovie get a lobotomy in his basement…electro shock therapy….is he on Prozac….because I just don’t see him able to motivate…lead…set goals and take the team where it needs to go. Tony Dungy was low key and quiet…but when Tony was not happy with something….believe me in his own way made himself perfectly clear….and did bring the hammer down….so it is not quiet vs rah rah I am talking about with Lovie…..I simply don’t see him as capable of leading !

Also, why is that lame Ozzie song in every stadium, Crazy train. Goodness, that doesnt get anyone pumped up except some losers that are stuck in the 80’s wearing Zubas pants with hair band shirts on.

You won’t catch me wearing a paper bag to the games, although those around me might prefer it. Yesterday at Bearss Sandwich shop some old lady said I shouldn’t be wearing my Bucs shirt on a day like that. It took all my restraint to settle on a very polite “why is that?” I had considered holding her face down between the Cuban sandwich presser until we could reach an agreement on my wardrobe decisions.

Well Joe, much like Justin is fed up with the Bucs, I’m fed up with your website. This is officially my last time logging on, I will take my reading experience elsewhere. The lack of speed when it comes to your website reminds me of our Bucs D. A lot of times I log on your site and it re directs me to other sites, or just fails to load. Until you decide to improve these issues I will not be back and it’s a shame because there are lot’s of good articles. Good Luck and go Bucs.

The offense is dreadful.
The defense is even worse.
Special teams are thee worst I’ve ever seen at the professional level.
The team has taken on the persona of their head coach. Dull, lifeless, boring. No urgency nor passion on the field. (except for postgame tears and feigned outrage from the overpaid DT.)
It’s a Bucs life.
Week in, week out, it’s all the same uninspired and sloppy play. Sorry to say it’s not the roster, it’s the coaching.

I find that the in-stadium experience is the biggest turnoff. I’m not a big guy, and the seats are still smaller than a coach seat on USAirways. People are always filing past on their way to getting a beer and then again to get rid of the beer. And what’s up with the video board that’s a mile wide and 6 feet tall?
Sometimes less is more. Back in my youth of watching games at Giants Stadium in the 70s and 80s, there was nothing to do but sit and watch the game.
Of course, this team sucks. There’s that.

The problem is this is a very bad team and there is nothing to be excited about. We the fans have no hope. We don’t see any improvement. This team is worse than last year. I don’t think anyone believes that Lovie is capable of turning this thing around. That is why it is so important that we draft Jameis Winston. To give the fans hope that things will get better because right now I don’t believe for a second that Lovie will draft anyone who will make a difference in what we are seeing this year. Probably draft a defensive player not that we don’t need defensive help but the only position that will give us hope is the quarterback position.

The pick the song vote during each game is like our qb options. Crap, crap, and crap. Mildly successful in the past vs mildly successful in the more recent past.
I also wish they’d bring back the old pirate ship videos. Those got me pumped up like nothing else. I also loved hearing “It’s a Pirate’s Life for Me” before the ship giveaway.

I have a simple solution for all these problems…Just Win
don’t start a season with holes on the OL. Don’t start a season with guys like Leonard Johnson and Bowers on your defense. Don’t start a season with a middle linebacker who can’t recognize what the other team is doing. And above all, make sure your offensives coordinator doesn’t have heart problems and the replacement coordinator has actually called plays on an NFL level.
These are simple rules to remember..get your fucking head out of your ass.

The problem with the NFL right now is lack of pressure on ownership to put a great product on the field. As an NFL owner you can be dead last ever year and make a huge profit. There should be a clause in place that after 5 years of under 500 record there is a forced sale clause. This would put the pressure back on ownership to maintain there team. At this rate I see the Bucs moving to London. The Glazers are strictly business people at this point. If the last 10 yrs aren’t proof enough I don’t know what is.

Went to the pittsburg game this year. THe experience their was 100 times better and more current than our stadium. It really is a good point. They Glazers should look into replacing the fan experience person. The experience is not up to NFL standards. Music is a good place to start.

I’m impressed at the number of metal heads here. While I do think they should play more modern rock I think metal will scare most people there. I was pleased to hear 2 different Disturbed songs at the last game. I think they should play some random pirate shanties. I would be drunk as hell.

Tampa is a terrible place to watch a home football game. Besides the fact we really suck, there are often as many or more Fans from other teams here, celebrating in our stadium 🙁
Then, there is that totally stupid “TAMPA then BAY” Cheer, where one side of the stadium chants TAMPA, and the other side responds by yelling “BAY”.
This robs the stadium of that home field electricity, because it shuts up 1/2 of the stadium, in between the cheer.
Contrast this to a game at Seattle, or at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, where the entire stadium is rocking, all of the time.

I will not go to anymore games. It is a boring product and a boring atmosphere. The stadium is not a novelty anymore and the in home experience is light years better…HDTV with commentary, cheaper food and beer, cleaner bathroom, no lame music, air condition and safer since I do not have to share the road with upset fans who have had too many beers to drive.

The in-game fan experience is largely determined by the size of the crowd. If a game is sold out and almost all of the fans are fans of the home team, there is a palpable excitement and electricity in the air. The home team feels it (helping to create that home field advantage) and the fans in attendace feel it. That’s the main reason the game experience at Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Seattle are awesome. Contrast that to Tampa where the stadium is one half to two thirds full and tons of fans there root for the visitors. The only solution is to win and the Bucs fans will come back. Music selection and such has little to nothing to do with it.

Great article by you and Justin. My wife and I have kept the faith for years. Got club season tickets in 2003 and kept them all this time. Through the loser years of 2003 and 2004. Going to playoffs in 2005 and seeing Edell Shepard drop the game winning touchdown ball in the end zone and seeing the Skins eventually win the game, the Gradkowski era, 2007 seeing Garcia do the one and done in the playoffs and of course 2008 when we go 9-4 and lose the last four games after Monte Kiffin announces his leaving, and of course the three loser head coaches we have had since Gruden. We have both gone to the draft in New York to see McCoy drafted, gone to Canton to see Sapp inducted. We are not fair weather fans. We are done. Gave all of our remaining club tickets away. The joy on the face of the lady at McNatt’s Dry Cleaners when she was presented with two club seat tickets and a parking pass was priceless. (Her first ever football game). As was the lady at the Goodwill truck when I gave her four arm loads of Buccaneer jerseys, polos, tshirts and caps. We are done. Dont get me wrong, we absolutely love the Buccaneers, still do. This is not Buccaneer football, I cannot waste time going to stadium and watch this mess. Im tired of the season being over after three games. You and Justin have it right, apathy is alive and here in the Bay area.

Buc Fan South Tampa Says: I too am done and have been giving away tickets,or not even going. I’ve sat in the south EZ of both stadiums with season tickets all but 82-87 when when were starting our family. I had a questionaire from my Ticket Acct Manager about 3-4 weeks ago…I told him I was done !…it is more than the losing….the game and game day expirence has changed in ways that will never return…..I am perfectly OK doing things around the house with the radio on following the game…

I’m done too. Fans are fans and they’ll pack the stands when they manage to start showing progress, but when an organization consistently fails to put a product on the field apathy is bound to follow. For years, the fans have been lied to and misinformed about how the team was looking. If the Bucs would sack up and be honest the fans would give them much more slack. “We aren’t a good football team and we haven’t drafted well for years, so it’s a rebuilding year” sets more realistic expectations than the “we should be winning the Division” crap that was peddled when L&L came on board. The mantra for hope and change only lasts so long – and it’s been too long to maintain the smokescreen for the fans. I’ll be a Bucs fan for life, but I won’t spend any more hard earned money for that sh*t show they’ve been putting on the field.

no amount of fanfare and fancy screens can make up for watching a completely helpless home team wet the bed for 5 out of the last 6 years. the game day experience was made in the early 2000’s by watching Warren, Derrick, Simeon, and Ronde make big plays and embarass good opponents. that is what makes the stadium shake and what makes it harder for opposing fans to buy tickets when their team comes to town. i try to get into the games from my west club seats but it’s hard to make noise in support of the defense after the other team’s 5th straight conversion on 3rd down.
sadly, we’ve committed to go to the bengals game with some friends from Cincy, but in december my tickets are going to the highest paying cheesehead and saints fan on stubhub. they’ll be thrilled to watch their team tune up for the playoffs. it’ll probably look alot like training camp, since it’ll look like brees and rodgers are running 7-on-7 drills vs our gutless defense

Im not going anywhere. I will still watch the Bucs on TV or listen on Radio. Like I said I love the Bucs but cant go to stadium till things change – consistently. I am actually at a loss as to what needs to change. Is it Lovie? Licht? Glazers? high priced free agents? or too may rookies? Is the environment too soft or too hard? I just dont know anymore. It was easy to blame Rah and Schiano – but with Lovie you would think he knows how to coach the team, but jeez. Even the Glazers opened the check book so they cant be blamed for being cheap like in years past.
The one thing I would say is losing Tedford, (his influence, leadership, play calling etc) and not replacing him has doomed us to a losing seaason. and that goes back to Lovie. His loyalty to Tedford above his loyalty to the team and to the fans ensured that the offense wouldnt go anywhere, couple that with his defense being too hard for the average Buc to pick up puts in the basement of the NFC South.
No, Im not going anywhere. Im here for the long haul.

Here is the kicker…FANS CAN’T LEAVE. Yep, those pesky contracts locked suckers in back in the day when a line formed to get season tickets. Gets even better. The contract allows for the Bucs to cancel the season tickets without any recourse. Will they? Nope. They, I am not joking, suggest selling the seats. Yep, to help out season ticket holders, the Bucs suggest selling the seats. “Please , fill out this survey after each game and grade us on how we are doing. But, please, don’t grade us on the play on the field.” It’s called Lipstick on a Pig. This pig is making anti-fans. Never, never would I have imagined that 30+ years as a loyal fan would deteriorate into despotic loathing. It’s getting bad. Want to make it better…stop talking and start winning inside the stadium and on the field.

Had to share this… I filled out my season ticket survey this past Sunday, and for the first time asked for a rep to contact me. After expressing my displeasure with the product on the field, I went on to criticize the Glazers for not putting money into upgrading RJS, similar to what Jeff Vinik has done with the Amalee Arena. His response, the Glazers don’t own RJS. Really, Jeff Vinik puts $45 million of his own dollars into a building he doesn’t own! I’m sick of the lack of Glazer input, especially the past 10 years. I’ve seen the upgrades in Jacksonville, plus what’s being done in Orlando, and soon to happen in Miami. As a charter season ticket holder, I’m done! I don’t want to sit in our stadium for a Saints and Packers’home’game!

Had the same experience today as my Bucs rep called (Mark J.) after I asked them to reply when asked why they were asking who my favorite college football team was. I assumed the Bucs were interested in my college team preferences to cloud the issue that the pro product on the field gets paid millions of dollars yet suck bigger ask than the guys that don’t get paid. Rep was gracious, asked if there was any ‘off the field’ concerns he could help me with. yes, don’t misrepresent your product to your consumers. I asked about a refund for Bucs marketing a misleading product that didn’t perform as advertised. Like the product on the field, lots of back peddling at that point Time to find that Morgan & Morgan guy.
