Brand New Territory For Lovie Smith

November 10th, 2014

LovieFalconsDuring Year 1 of the Lovie Smith regime in Chicago, somehow, someway, that quarterback-challenged club learned how to play the Tampa-2 defense quickly and jumped out to a 4-5 record. In seven of those nine games, that Bears team held opponents to 20 or fewer points.

Man, Bucs fans would kill for that kind of production.

For some reason, these Bucs aren’t learning defense properly. Just ask Ronde Barber.

Borderline insane Bucs fans like to compare Year 1 of Lovie’s Tampa Bay reign to that of Father Dungy’s first season back in 1996. Nothing could be more inappropriate.

When the ’96 Bucs moved their record to 1-8, it was a very different from the current debacle. Tampa Bay had allowed 13 points per game in each of its previous four games. That’s right, four consecutive games of allowing 13 points.

Those Bucs had were building something. The current Bucs, well, they’re embarrassing.

Joe’s point is that all this losing and lack of progress is brand new territory for Lovie. He has no experience leading such a steaming pile of dung.

How Lovie responds — and how his team responds — should be under close scrutiny by Team Glazer.

    Mikie Smith is saying…..
Too bad we don’t play every week….
    You are getting better Lovie….

  2. Soggy Says:

He is trying to give lovie a letter from hester saying = I took it easy on you this time..

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

Or Atlanta’s Smith is laughing at Lovie at how Ryan just got his 10th win over the Bucs.

  4. passthebuc` Says:

The problem will be that after Lovie has assembled the talent he thinks necessary to run his antiquated Tampa 2 system, the new HC whom ever he will be will need to dispose of those players and start over.

I’m 75 and in great health, but I will be long gone before Tampa has title aspirations again.

  5. Makie Lovie Says:

Can we just start a “fill in the caption” segment to the site? This pic would be a great example… We need something to humor us in this dreadful season…

  6. jo_mama Says:

    New Territory?

    wasn’t he fired in Tampa?

    wasn’t he fired in Chicago?

He will be fired in Tampa again.

    Same Territory.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

passthebuc… Wow you probably take the prize for the oldest Bucs fan around these parts. I thought I was old at nearly 65, RastaMon said he was 66, I guess it’s true you are only as old as you feel. I feel about 30.

  8. Soggy Says:

    @Makie Lovie, That’s a great idea.

  9. MTM Says:

Its bad when Mike Smith’s team is seal clubbing yours. Lets stop comparing the Bears defense under Lovie Smith. Today’s Bucs defensive roster would be 2nd and 3rd stringers in Chicago.

  10. FanOfBucs Says:

    Lovie did well with Rivera
    Lovie did well with Marinelli

    Lovie not doing well now

  11. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

I don’t understand why fans are such cry babies!!!!

We are going to get the 1st QB in next year’s draft. Don’t worry, be happy!

  12. flmike Says:

The rules are a lot different now than they were then…

  13. The Ether Says:

“The rules are a lot different now than they were then…”

Exactly… That Golden Age of clocking defenseless WRs & QBs is over… Back when ESPN had their ‘Jacked UP!’ segments…. the good ol days…

  14. The Ether Says:

    Btw, In that Pick,

Mike Smith is saying, “Hey Lovie?”

    Lovie, “Yeah?”

    Mike Smith, “Lovie Smith!”

    Lovie, “Yes! What??!”

    Smith, “Youve just been served…”

Besides Andrew Luck. What recent High Draft Pick QB has panned out?

We won a superbowl with a veteran QB.

    Go get Brian Hoyer.

    Build Offensive Line and Defense.

If we get the #1 draft pick trade for more picks

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Aside from this year, we have only one first pick playing for us from the last 10 years drafting….and very few others.

Our poor draft picks are the root of our problem along with, of course, coaching…..but you can scream for Lovie to be fired as you did chiano and it won’t happen this year or maybe next….so settle in for the disappointment.

  17. The Ether Says:

“If we get the #1 draft pick trade for more picks”

    Never gonna happen!

Glazers want to sell tickets, Lovie can buy 2-3 more years with a Rookie Franchise QB…

We’re gettin a QB with that Top Pick! …Keep Tankin it For Winston!!!

  18. Lev Says:

We better draft a QB. Or else I want team Glazer OUT!

Dominik, Bruce Allen are gone… Its a new regime, and they need to do what this franchise has Never Done – Pick The #1 QB out of college… WINSTON!

  20. Dave Pear Says:

Mike Smith is giving Lovie the list of plays they are going to run and saying…”I’ll still beat you”.

  21. phil Says:

The Bucs have shown great improvement. They only lost be 10 points yesterday instead of 42 points the last time they played the Falcons. Is there anyway we can get a “FIRE LOVIE” billboard?

  22. John McKillop Says:

@tampabaybucfan you are exactly right. Gerald McCoy is the only first round pick on this roster from the last 10 years. Horrible drafts from Allen and Gruden, no players left from that regime, that is pathetic. Dominick and Raheem, the only draft pick left from three years of that regime is McCoy, three drafts and only one player on the roster, horrible and inexcusable. Dominick and Schiano, David, Banks, Martin and Tandy, are the only ones left from that regime. Absolutely horrible drafts over the last 8 – 10 years has left this team totally bereft of talent. It starts with ownership not being capable of making smart hires for the front office or head coaches, they have set this franchise so far back, it’s going to take Lovie and company awhile to right the ship if ever.

  23. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

The Bucs suck. Tell us something we don’t know.

  24. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

“It’s a broken record, really, with me talking to you and telling you how much better we’re getting and we’re making progress — got to find a way to get a win,” –Lovie Smith

    GTFO of here.

Just keep losing and evaluating coach. Cut some fat from this team in the off season and do the right thing in the first round.

    Do The Right Thing!

  25. bucrightoff Says:

Lol 87 even you know “do the right thing” to Lovie is taking Randy Gregory or Leonard Williams. If McCown plays like he did yesterday for the rest of the year, you can mark it down: McCown is the 2015 starter, no QB will be drafted.

  26. bucs4lyfe Says:

an injured schiano pick of Adrian clayborne is better than this garbage lovie has brought in here. lovie sucks and I don’t think he yet realizes how bad he’s set the franchise back with all these bad free agent pickups

  27. OB Says:

For those of you that have not read “Monday Morning Quarterback” by one of Joes’ favorite people, Peter King today, you should read it and his comments on Jim Caldwell, the Detroit Lions new head coach who states something that would be earthshaking to Lovie, Caldwell is quoted in the article as saying: “We were frank and honest with the players from the moment we walked in the door,” Caldwell said from his office the other day. “In this league, we see it every year: Teams lose games in the NFL more than they win them. We brought in players and coaches from winning backgrounds—James Ihedigbo and Glover Quin [from Houston], Golden Tate from Seattle, [coordinators] Joe Lombardi from the Saints and Teryl Austin from the Ravens.”

Love brought in coaches from the Browns, Vikings, in other words a tradition in losing. The mind set is not there, they also discipline their players for doing the wrong things.

Until we have this, we will continue to lose.

    Same Territory.
    ———————–

And Pete Carroll was fired twice, Belichick, Jimmy Johnson, Jon Gruden, Tom Landry, and other excellent coaches have been fired once. So what’s your point?

And no, moron, he was never fired in Tampa. He was taken from Tampa as the LBs coach to be the defensive coordinator for the Rams and after he did a fantastic job transforming them on defense he was hired as the Bears coach. BTW, since Smith left Chicago, their defense has gone from being one of the best in the league, to one of the worst. I don’t think the man forgot how to coach.

  29. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ John McKillop

Might want to double check the players drafted by both coaches that are still with the Bucs

At the very least you left out Foster, Claybourne, Stocker, and Bowers from Rah drafts, and Glennon, Spence, Gholson, James from the Schiano drafts. Maybe more those are just off the top of my head.

  30. CC Says:

The Glazers suck! They are clueless. Another terrible hire as head coach and GM. There is nothing to look forward to this year or in the foreseeable future. Somehow the great savior Lovie screwed this team up so bad its going to take years to turn it around. This entire organization blows out loud.

  31. Tye Says:

    Mike – Hey Lovie!

    Lovie – Hey Mike!

Mike – I was thinking about you being our DC if you didn’t get a HC offer this past off season…

    Lovie – Oh yeah, THANKS!

    Mike – Sure glad we dodged that bullet! {uncontrolled laughter as he walks off.}
