“They’re Not Playing A Lot Of Tampa-2”
November 7th, 2014Stop blubbering that the Tampa-2 defense is a relic and Lovie Smith needs to ditch what’s not working.
That’s the message from the guy who coached linebackers under Monte Kiffin years ago, the former Bucs scout and Jets personnel chief Pat Kirwan, now a media hound for CBS and SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Kirwan and prickly Pete Prisco took their weekly look at the Bucs’ upcoming game and Kirwan had words for the anti-Tampa-2 crowd.
“People think the Tampa-2 is dead. They’re not playing a lot of Tampa-2,” Kirwan said of the Bucs. “Watch the tapes. It’s a third-down look. It’s not what they’re doing on first downs.”
Kirwan is leery of the Bucs defense, sans Gerald McCoy. “He can’t play this game alone,” he said.
Of course, like Joe, both men are concerned the Bucs won’t be able to pressure Matt Ryan, and he’ll be primed for a field day with his healthy receiving corps.
Watch the full breakdown below, including Sunday’s predictions.

Well whatever they are playing the $hit isn’t working. Im calling it now…… McCown shines on Sunday and leads us to victory. Jacquies Smith will keep playing solid. Aunt Geraldine will continue to show up in the first 6mins of the 1st quarter then disappear the rest of the game. He will also continue to add votes for the sportsman of the year award by picking up opposing players off the ground after making a positive play.

I don’t think the Defense is playing a lot of anything. Maybe not even football. I would like to see some jamming of the receivers at the line. Might be nice to see that for a change.

Maybe at Thanksgiving dinner this year we can all offer a prayer of THANKS….LOVIE was fired !!!!!!
November 7th, 2014 at 1:10 pm
What the Bucs are actually playing is the Swiss Cheese defense — the one with all the holes in it…..
November 7th, 2014 at 1:15 pm
They are not playing much cover 2 because they have decided to go with cover zero.
November 7th, 2014 at 1:19 pm
They are not playing a lot of alot of Tampa 2 anymore. It looked like they were playing a lot more Tampa 2 in the beginning of the season, now as Kirwan said it looks like its just being used on 3rd downs.
November 7th, 2014 at 1:22 pm
This defense would be better with a player like Kuechly…..but no….we tanked for the higher draft pick and selected Barron…..
Like I said….and….I will say it again & again….its not where you pick….its who you pick…
87…..this is a year before your time…but in 1986 the Bucs had the #1 pick and selected Bo Jackson…..need i say more?
November 7th, 2014 at 1:29 pm
But our 3rd down defense is what sucks!!!!!!!! It is Tampa 2..if it wasnt Tampa 2, gerald mccoy wouldnt of defended it twice, talking about carolina last year and dallas this year…So it is the Tampa 2, stop making excuses for Lovie.
November 7th, 2014 at 1:40 pm
^^^^^Agreed, we give up 3rd down conversions like they only had 1yd to go.

There is a black cloud over this team
November 7th, 2014 at 2:08 pm
I see a beatdown coming this week. Why should it be any different than last time? People come into our house and kick us in the teeth at will. Until this team gets tired of losing we will continue to lose.
November 7th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
@Ray Rice….that’s right, call out the only player on defense who IS doing anything besides Lavonte. Brilliant…..
November 7th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
Call this defense the Tampa 250…
Cause two teams already put up fifty points against it…
What a joke!!!
November 7th, 2014 at 2:16 pm
@ Architect
Its the curse of Chucky…
Also the curse of Dominik… He messed this team up for a decade…
November 7th, 2014 at 2:22 pm
is not just the D is these pinheads!!! coaching. well that’s what they call it! @rastamon. if that would happen it would be my best turkey day ever!!!! lol.
November 7th, 2014 at 2:34 pm
Our 3rd down stop rate sucks, hence if they are playing the T2 only on 3rd down, well, there’s your answer…
November 7th, 2014 at 2:47 pm
@Ray Rice
I don’t know why the hell he signed another contract here with fans like you.
November 7th, 2014 at 3:31 pm
Lovie Smith’s defense sucketh majorly. He can’t shop for groceries OR cook a decent meal!
November 7th, 2014 at 3:34 pm
It really doesn’t matter much what type of defense you play if you don’t have any talent.
Adjacent article: ‘Is it Crezdon Butler’s time again?’
Seriously? Two games ago at Ray-Jay I saw him in the starting line-up, and commented ‘I didn’t know we had a Crezdon Butler on the Bucs’.
The only question for the opposing OC each game is which hole in the defense does he exploit first.
November 7th, 2014 at 3:40 pm
It’s pretty obvious the Bucs aren’t playing Tampa-2 a whole lot. Read any resource explaining the Tampa-2 and then watch the tape.
November 7th, 2014 at 4:43 pm
@Bobby
Sorry you have such low standards. But I guess you are one of the people who Aunt Geraldine called out because you accept mediocrity.
November 7th, 2014 at 4:49 pm
@Dress
You took the words right out of my mouth. I don’t know why the hell he re-signed again either. $98 million down the drain. You’re probably one of the people who called the Glazers cheap too. They aren’t cheap. They just spend the wrong amount of $ on the wrong people. Geraldine being one of them. Who gives a $hit if hes nice and great in the community. That doesn’t translate to wins. It just translates into blinding people like you from facts.

The Kuechly/Barron talk is very misguided. Highly likely Lavonte isn’t here if Kuechly is(they probably take a safety or something else in the 2nd round and not another LB). So who here would trade Lavonte for Kuechly? Yeah no one, so no point in bringing it up.
November 7th, 2014 at 6:11 pm
bucs haven’t been big on pass rushing in many years including all years mccoy was here but have still won games against Atlanta. No this offense was the problem against everyone. the defense was bad but all that means is offense had more chances to score than ever, it’s like people are saying it’s the defense fault we only scored 14 points against the dirty birds. it’s the offense job to keep the game close
