Dungy speaks out against the Bucs’ quarterback change
So many Bucs fans celebrated as if they won the lottery when Team Glazer announced Lovie Smith would be the next head coach.
Why? Because so many Bucs fans never got over their fetish for Father Dungy and believed the hiring of Lovie was the closest thing to Dungy’s return.
It seems, however, the patriarch is not in line with his right-hand man.
For reasons Joe has never been able to understand, way, way, way too many Bucs fans think much more of Father Dungy than Chucky, even though it was Chucky, not Father Dungy, who hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy aloft in victory that chilly night in January 2003.
Dungy, in speaking to the creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, on a broadcast of Pro Football Live seen on NBC Sports Network, said Lovie is making a mistake handling the quarterback of the future and the quarterback of the past but not the quarterback of the present (again).
“You’re not going to the playoffs, so you’ve got to play Mike Glennon,” Father Dungy said. “Find out if he is indeed the quarterback of the future and give him the opportunity to grow.”
Father Dungy said he would start Glennon the rest of the season, barring injury.
This is just common sense. If Glennon really is your quarterback of the future — as of this typing, Joe really believes that proclamation to be dubious if not hollow — then you get him ready for 2015. He doesn’t get experience sitting on the bench wearing a baseball cap and talking about playing with building blocks the previous evening in a thumping south Tampa hotspot.
The benching of Glennon, who guided the Bucs to their lone win, smells like a panic move by Lovie, perhaps fearing he is about to lose his team if somehow, someway he doesn’t find a way to win another game or two.

I think the Bucs will win a couple or three games here on out. Either one, McCown or Glennon could lead that effort. I agree with Dungy and your take Joe, Glennon should be the starter.

Pretty sure that Dungy coached during an era where the expected turnaround for a team, and the shelf life of a new coach, wasn’t quite so short. He had the luxury of coaching a Tampa team for which there were no expectations and then coaching a team that already had one of the best QBs in league history. The circumstances are different and I don’t think Dungy was ever faced with the decision making parameters that Lovie is working with

Perhaps Lovie has already made the decision that Glennon will be next year’s backup or will compete with a draft pick for the starters job.
Or, perhpas Lovie has decided to bench any player regardless of position if that player has preformed poorly.
Those are the only two sensible reasons to bench Glennon.

@TBBF – not a bad theory but why would they get a new QB and keep around their old QB who fans would be calling for if the new rookie has the inevitable rookie struggles. If you’re going to draft a new QB then you need to be all in on that guy. McCown makes sense to be the guy that sticks around. Glennon has trade value. Maybe he could be part of a trade up package on draft day.

L&L are panicing….the Trades on trade deadline were more about ONLY having 3 picks next draft…..Bucs sitting silently until round 6&7…yawn….that would have been brutal for them to hear seemingless endless talk about the BUC not having picks…….fast forward to McClown starting….L&L are desparte about THEIR RECORD…and putting any meaningless win before the developement of Glennon…and as Dungy says…finding out if he can carry the Bucs…

Yeah, the local media tends to have that kind of effect on Head Coach’s here in the N.Y. South. Next will be billboards and banner planes. Can anyone blame him for feeling the need to win? The man has worked his butt off to possibly secure the #1 pick in the draft but now has to worry about not being here to use it.. That sucks, it’s a difficult balance.

who care what dungy thinks. great coach but why don’t you stay retired. first off all dungy Could have easily asked Lovie, secondly you got to be kinda stupid to still be saying let’s see if he is the guy, it’s obvious lovie doesn’t think he is. its obvious drafting of a quarterback is coming and with the horrible offenses dungy had in Tampa he really can’t question anyone
but joe not sure why you don’t know Chucky is nothing more than a glorified offensive coordinator, dungy won with young talent, Chuck set the franchise back with dinosaurs and bad draft picks

It would only make sense if they plan to keep their options to select a QB with something other than their top pick.
THey could be planning to trade for additional picks….or they could be interested in a DE.
Glennon is s serviceable, inexpensive backup for two more years no matter who the other QB is.
Or….Maybe Lovie still believes the McCown can get the job done.

Everybody loves to talk about how much things don’t make sense, I like to imagine scenarios where these moves WOULD make sense. If I was a Coach wanting to tank the season and pick up a stud Quarterback for the next 10 years (which we have NEVER had), I would bench Glennon in favor of Josh McCown. If I wanted to dangle Glennon as trade bait and he was beginning to suck, I would bench him in favor of McCown. If you are truly making a big move for the future, you have to better than Schiano did last year, ending up with the #7 pick, you have to completely nose dive to secure a top 2 pick. What better time to do that then your first season, after you convince the town that neither of these guys are your future. Pick up Mariota in the off season and all is forgiven for the next decade. For those backing Winston for the Bucs, why in the world would any GM risk drafting an Aquib Talib type and throwing him millions of dollars just to get arrested at the Mons Venus and waste an incredible opportunity to finally have a real team, year in and year out, in the responsible hands of a mature Quarterback. Winston is NOT worth the risk.

Lovie just always has a hard on for vets over young guys, it’s quite disturbing. But ask Chicago fans, if Lovie likes a vet the only way a young guy gets on the field is by the vet getting hurt.

Tampa 2 is why I got excited to have Lovie here in addition to his resume. I love Dungy as a person or even a neighbor but not as a coach. Dungy was never going to get passed Philadelphia in the playoffs. I was all for Gruden to be here then. He added the elements needed to reach the Super Bowl and win it!
I could see Dungy still having his stubborn ways that got us an unbalanced team.
Between Arroyo and Tedford having their opinion about Glennon I’m sure the decision was well thought of. Lovie is not thinking draft as most of the media have fans wrapped around that idea.

I celebrated Lovie’s announcement because I felt that for the first time since Chucky (5 years), we’d have an NFL-caliber, proven head coach. I didn’t anticipate 1-7 but I haven’t given up on Lovie.
Look at the Lightning — they are overflowing with talented forwards that they drafted and developed, with a few FA signings for depth. But it took 5 years….

I’m all for trying to win games. We could use Glennon to trade for a higher 1st round pick position and get a QB IF AVAILABLE. I still rather have McCown helping the new QB next year than Glennon. Because I could see the new QB next year teaching Glennon how to get out of bounds…

The biggest mistake Lovie made with Glennon is not obtaining the highest pick possible for cement shoes before last draft. Now that he has played so horrible there is no value. 18 games leading the worst offense in the nfl has removed all doubt abouy Glennon. He is a below average backup with ZERO HEART…

I’d like to see us win a few games this year as a result of us coming together and actually playing well in the system, not because we lucked in to them and won because the other team botched a play or two. If we legitimately are better than the other team a few games then I would be happy to see that. Then we could get a solid O or D line starter in the first and trade up to early in the 2nd round to snag a QB. Might need some developing but it’ll be a lot easier to let a 2nd round QB sit and develop than it would be a first.

This is the NFL…Not For Long, you have 3 years to turn around a franchise now, it used to be 5 years before a new HC would feel the heat if he didn’t get his team turned around, now it;s closer to two years, if they don’t win in that third year that “New” head coach is the old head coach, the NHL is way more forgiving, unless you’re an O6 team, then the heat is constantly on you to win, but teams like Tampa, Florida, Nashville, etc, they can develop players over a few seasons. Thats one of the things I love about the NHL, you get to watch teams grow, the NFL wants a fully birthed winner NOW, not next year, NOW. Also, the NHL has a much better way to develop players than the NFL, the whole college to NFL thing really does suck at it’s core, college football is my future NFLr vs your future accountant, the NHL develops players like MLB, Mighty Mites to Major Juniors, a much better system.

Glennon isn’t the quarterback of the future and we all know it. He had another chance to win the job and didn’t get it done. He has all the same issues as last year: Panic under pressure, poor accuracy especially deep, poor feet, and he pretty consistently doesn’t see wide open receivers.
We have two backup quarterbacks. Who cares which one starts?

Said it from the beginning about the Lovie hiring being some stupid nostalgia act for the Glazers to get back into the good graces of the fans after the last 2 coaches(morons) flopped… If they did their due diligence they would have interviewed more candidates legitimately (don’t believe for a second that another coach had a shot)… Kinda the fans fault for always living in the past and saying we can win by playing “Buc Ball” and win with defense and average Qb play… Congrats to the fans who wanted 1997 football to work in 2014… The Glazers listened unfortunately

If we just play 4 quarters of solid football and lose would still be nice… So sad to say but no point in ruining our draft position so some people can feel alright at night.. We are a bad football team no matter which way you spin it.. Talent is not there and either is coaching.

anyone else wonder why lovie just blankly stares into the replay booth on his headset. Never coaches anyone up. the only time he ever says anything on the sidelines is when he chewed out gholston for jumping off sides.

Dungy and Lovie have the same problem, they are not offensive minded. Dungy might have learned by watching all of those games since he left, but Lovie has not or is in the painful process.
They need and must have a strong offensive minded attacking OC, they did not and do not have that, so the Bucs paid/paying for it.
The defense is coming together, still has holes but it is getting better except for the deadwood that he keeps.

What exactly DO they have to play for? To make YOU and I happy they got a few wins under their belt. That will do it for you? That will make you happy? 4-12 makes you happy?
I’ve never wanted this team to tank or lose out. I want them to win as much as possible but that’s just dumb as hell at this point in the season. Win for what? Team morale? Morale has been shot to hell weeks ago with the first thumping by the Falcons.
There have been a few scouts that compare Winston to Luck, some say he’s even better than Luck was in college. Then again scouts also loved Ryan Leaf. I’m not an NFL scout, but I’m not the only one that thinks he could be the next Luck either. Who am I to say that those scouts are wrong? I’m just a fan that thinks he’s a sure thing and I’m not alone.

I posted this yesterday, Jimmy johnson was saying a couple of weeks ago on the pregame show how he did not care about the losing season so he could stock up on draft picks and that is what got him the players to win the superbowl, they won it I think it was the following year.. He was braging about tanking..

We have no idea what is going on in that locker room. The wide receivers may be rumbling about the fact the Glennon keeps throwing short, he doesn’t look off the safety, he doesn’t throw them open etc…
O-line is rumbling about Glennon holding the ball to long taking sacks.
Coaches are frustrated that he doesn’t audible out of a bad play. He misses reads and checks down to often.
Lovie may have very well made this move to “save” his locker room.

I’ve seen enough of Melman, he has proven he is not the quarterback of the future, but he is the quarterback of the bench. McCown may not be any better, but I am hopeful. Give them two more games and they will start to play more like a team.

For 1. M&M is in a weaker conference & he has never went undefeated, he has never won a championship. The guy is Talented but can he lead some guys who aren’t use to winning to the promise land? I not sure about that. Imo if M&M went to a team like The Texans or Dallas would be a better fit. Now take away all the off field issues from Winston and everyone wants this kid. The guy is a winner & a leader & that is what u cant teach. The kid evidently perform under pressure. Now ask yourselves this, If any of the top qb’s of the last 3 drafts would’ve been under the same off field pressures, would they or could they have the same outcome &results? U be the judge.

Both teams that would draft ahead of the bucs next year will be raiders and jags, and both drafted a qb. As long as we lose more than say the jets we should be able to win a game or two down the stretch and draft the top qb. Winston isn’t the answer in my eyes. Too many issues off the field.but keep in mind drafting a qb doesn’t always equal wins off the bat. Bortles and Carr are both losing. Glennon outplayed mccown when he started.so why would mccown give us a better chance to win???? I remember watching him throw interceptions every time he was under pressure week one thru week three. Lovie is tanking and will lose the team regardless. No emotion on sideline.I would he flipping out if the team was playing like they are, but what do I know….maybe saying nothing works! Haha
