Lovie’s Confidence Rating Drops To 36 Percent
October 29th, 2014Fans should be confident in their head coach, especially when he’s an established winner halfway through Year 1 of a five-year contract.
But that’s not the case across the Tampa Bay area. Joe’s got exclusive polling data to compare.
Back on Oct. 6, JoeBucsFan.com asked readers to grade their confidence Lovie Smith. More than 61 percent responded they either were “Confident” (35.7 percent), “Very Confident” (15.6), or “Totally Confident” (9.7) in Lovie.
Joe ran the exact same poll yesterday, and Lovie’s confidence rating fell to 36 percent — “Confident” (23.75), “Very Confident” (7.36), “Totally Confident” (5.17).
So what happened in a few weeks to plummet fans’ faith? Joe suspects embarrassing home performances sandwiched around a bye week did the trick.
Fans will believe in a coach for a long time if his team plays hard and disciplined football. But they’ll jump ship the minute they smell weakness and incompetence. Sadly, that scent is making the rounds.
Joe hopes Lovie can make changes to win back the legions of fans in his corner just a few weeks ago.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:04 pm
Well the next 4 weeks are it: @Cleveland, Atlanta, @Chicago, @ Washington.
Final five weeks?: Cincinatti, @Detroit, @Carolina, Green Bay, New Orleans
Things could easily spiral to 1-15 if they don’t pick up a few wins in the next month.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:13 pm
Inexcusable …there is enough talent to be .500….the talent is not coached….that would be Lovie and his band of yes men…the players are numb in disbelief
October 29th, 2014 at 12:14 pm
I’m ready to wait 3 years before judging. We need to stop switching coaches each 2 years. We purge the 50-75% of our roster every time.
If Lovie would have stepped up and said this is a rebuilding year instead of giving ridiculous speeches on everything is fine I think he would be much more respected.
Licht seems to be doing a good job but again, who call the shots? Licht job is to find players for Lovie needs so I don’t blame him for the Mankin trade or dealing out the other players from Tampa. I’m sure he was asked to do so.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:16 pm
Buc1087 sure hopes they keep losing…
October 29th, 2014 at 12:16 pm
We can only hope Lovie is gone at the end of the season.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:18 pm
I think 36% is being too nice… This team is playing worse then it did under Rah Morris or Greg Schiano who were both fired after 2 seasons… Lovie better figure shit out quick or next year will be his last…
October 29th, 2014 at 12:18 pm
The polls aren’t scientific (allows multiple votes) etc…..but are probably still valid as an indicator of falling support.
The only poll that matters is the Glazers & I think they will stick with their choice for a minimum through the end of next year.
All those calling for Lovie to be fired now are foolish to think that is even a possibility….
October 29th, 2014 at 12:19 pm
Lovie NEVER said this would be a rebuilding year….NEVER….Fire his limp azz….sooner the better….
October 29th, 2014 at 12:20 pm
And to think a lot of fans and top sports media fell for the playoff bound Bucs. I am so glad I did not. I did last yeat after the year before and the 7-9 start. But there was no way I would set myself up. But NEVER did I think it would be this bad.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:21 pm
Joe,
It was 2 quotes he made that ticked me off.
The first was when he said that-
1st
“We don’t sign veterans to back Ups”-WTF…..
(Reference countless Super Winning teams that have)
2nd
“I don’t believe in the notion that an offensive line needs time to gel..”Wow”
And Don’t get started with his vanilla version of the Cover 2-Most of Competitive Division 2-A High Schools have walked away from it. Its been on the decline league-wide for a few years now. Uptempo spread offenses eat it alive.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:22 pm
“Incompetence” is the only word that sums this whole f’ing Lovie mess up…
October 29th, 2014 at 12:22 pm
FIRE LOVIE
October 29th, 2014 at 12:22 pm
Tampabaybucfan…it doesn’t allow me to multiple vote…
Then again if people log in under different names…I’m pretty sure they can double vote that way.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:23 pm
Weakness and incompetence…the defining traits of your 2014 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:25 pm
The poll is tainted, Joe. Here’s why.
I doubt I’m the only one, but I simply don’t come here as much because of all the negativity. This has happened increasingly over the last month.
I never even saw yesterday’s poll as a result.
So, I would be curious to see how many people responded to each poll, because it is very possible the numbers are changed because the people still supporting Lovie are avoiding the website more often.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:26 pm
The one thing I think this team has an abundance of is gun powder for the ship. They have to be stocked to the gills with gun powder seeing how the cannons rarely go off anymore.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
60 percent of this roster is made up of Lovie Smiths players already. How confident is everyone that he’ll be able to add another winner to this already stellar group?
October 29th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
Wish Coach Tedford the best.
But you knew coach Tedford had health issues….
AND U DON”T AT LEAST HIRE A SENIOR OFFENSIVE ASST. THATS Familiar with scheme to help run the offense….WHAT!!!!!!!!!!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
Bonzai…I voted confident btw.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:28 pm
We were told we shouldn’t be patient. We are following directions.
On a serious note…didn’t expect 36% of readers to be so blinded. What kind of professional fails to adapt to trends in the market place? What kind of professional can only get results one way and with certain tools (players)?
A good coach maximizes the talents of the players on hand. They do not do what Lovie is doing. That is why he will not be successful.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:28 pm
RastaMon Says
“Lovie NEVER said this would be a rebuilding year….NEVER….Fire his limp azz….sooner the better…”
Tell me, if you were planning to go to a restaurant and then saw that same place say in a press conference that the food would not be good until next year, would you wait to eat there until after the improvements are made?
My point it, only an idiot would expect the Bucs to admit they were rebuilding if they were.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:29 pm
In Lovie We Trust.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:29 pm
To admit rebuilding would have cost ticket sales, people. Think about it.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:30 pm
@Buc1987
Nice!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:30 pm
Pride Cometh Before the Fall…Errrrrrrr Time
October 29th, 2014 at 12:31 pm
Bonzai…so what your essentially saying is they were preying on the foolish to buy tickets?
That’s STILL wrong.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:33 pm
@Bonzai – agreed. they can fall back on saying it’s a rebuild now that it’s obviously a rebuild. I’ll admit. I bit in the preseason. I was ready to buy my plane tickets to go see them in the playoffs. now that they’re bad, I get it. maybe I should have gotten it earlier but I had my fan glasses on. Either way, the Bucs administration doing a salesmanship job on the fan base doesn’t mean that they should be run out of town and it doesn’t mean that they should be given a shorter leash. We know now what they’re working with and we know that it’ll be another year, or two I think, until we see significant improvement.
If you don’t want to buy tickets then don’t. That won’t change the amount of time it’ll take to rebuild.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:34 pm
@BuccaneerBonzai
Plenty have done more with less.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:34 pm
@luvmybucs – how do you know that he knew about Tedford’s health problems?
October 29th, 2014 at 12:35 pm
Lovie does not believe in drama so there is nothing to change ….to change the drama outside One Bucs Palace. He will do his best for the defense to keep learning the scheme. Arroyo will also have his support.
13 points against our defense…..I’ll take that every week.
We had scored more than 13 “meaningful points” (Pitt., NO & St.Louis) in games this year. We need to get back to that.
Lovie has a resume that speaks for itself. In Lovie I TRUST!!!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:36 pm
I think it would be different if there was some sort of light shining at the end of the tunnel.
Unfortunately it seems the tunnel is getting darker.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:36 pm
@ 87
You “hope they keep losing”…..I presume so that Bucs will draft Winston….
I have some news for you….They will not…..even if Lovie were in favor and I would be shocked if he is…..I don’t think the Glazers would want him. The surely wouldn’t do it for ticket sales…..proven they don’t care or Manziel would be here.
We may draft a QB but it won’t be Winston……Sorry, Buddy!!!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Bonzai said Joe has a “tainted poll”. LOL!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Bonzai- crying about all the negativity keeping the Lovie supporters away is weak, unprovable and likely very untrue. See lots of commentors on here that were real bullish on do-no-wrong Lovie and his offseason moves back before there were any games that counted who now are calling for his head and are way more negative about him than I am. YOU are not representative of anything and your whining and crying about the negativity on this site is wholly laughable. Go ask mommy to pat your back and warm up some graham crackers for you!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
And Bonzai, admitting now the team is nowhere close and needs time to rebuild will cost even more season tickets because people will correctly deduct Lovie is a snake oil salesman. Lovie will go after more FAs to try and save himself because now next year is playoffs or bust.
Jim Caldwell is badly, badly, badly, outcoaching Lovie. You would have been mocked endlessly if you said that when they were both hired. Now Lovie might be 1 and done. What a debacle.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
No wonder Rachel Watson stayed away from you Joe!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:39 pm
TBBF 1987 is now the ringleader of the Fire Lovie Cartel because he wants Jameis. Bucs – Lovie = Chance to draft Jameis; Bucs + Lovie = No shot.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
I don’t want him to win this season anyways. For the first time in my life I don’t want them to win any more games this season.
I do want them to keep Lovie though only because I don’t want to keep starting over and over again. That’s a recipe for disaster. Schiano deserved another year after going 7-9 in his rookie season as an NFL coach.
Then again LUVMYBUCS makes a good point. Coaches HAVE done more with less including a clown by the name of Raheem the Dream, but I don’t want to start over every 2 years anymore.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
I don’t know, how many times I’ve seen…
Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips turn a lame/talentless defensive… Into a top ranked defense overnight(one offseason).
Sh-t.. Todd Bowles & Rod Marinelli are doing the same damn thing right now. So there’s no excuses.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:46 pm
Tampabaybucfan…we shall see buddy, we shall see. Just how much they want Winston when the time comes. The combine and Pro Day have yet to begin.
The prospect of 30,000 FSU fans buying up jersey’s and tickets will be too tempting for the Glazers not to lean on Lovie for Jameis.
Jameis is FSU…Manziel was not.
That’s my prediction and if I’m wrong then I stay home next season and won’t buy any ugly ass jersey’s. If I’m right then 30,000 tickets will be sold to FSU-Buc fans in a months time. 7 Jameis Winston Jersey’s will be bought just from my family alone.
Bring him Glazers and you have my money for a looooong time.
October 29th, 2014 at 12:47 pm
@ 87
Not saying they shouldn’t draft Winston….just saying they wpn’t.
Maybe Joe will run a question/poll with his Winston watch article…
Do you think, if he were available, that the Bucs would draft Winston?
Another question…..Do you think the Bucs should draft a QB with their first pick?
Love to see the answers on those….
October 29th, 2014 at 12:49 pm
@ Patrick
Its obvious Tedford had previous health issues because this last surgery was to REPLACE A STINT IN HIS HEART… He has had major heart surgury and its why he was out of football…
Lovie hiring this guy was extremely near sighted and foolish… Another sign of Lovie’s intellect and management abilities…
Not good!
October 29th, 2014 at 12:51 pm
@Patrick in VA
The moment Tedford went under the knife. You’ve got to be actively, aggressive about Plan B. It must be solidified-6 ways to Sundays.
A college quarterback coach, without a drop of NFL experience can’t be your plan B. Even Head Coach Bruce Arians hired a Senior Offensive Asst. Tom Moore-to help him implement his scheme.
You know how it goes… “A good plan implemented today is better than a perfect plan implemented tomorrow.”
October 29th, 2014 at 12:53 pm
6 ways to Sunday
October 29th, 2014 at 12:54 pm
It is not about the talent on the roster TODAY…..it is all about the VOID is COACHING….I swear …the players chatting on the sidelines playing without ANY of Lovies coaches would finish the season with a better record than Lovie and his check cashing posse
October 29th, 2014 at 12:58 pm
@Mac & luvmybucs – an offensive assistant probably isn’t in the bucs’ budget for this year. schiano is still on the books, lovie got a fat check and it’s not like tedford getting sick took him off the books as far as us owing him money. I can’t imagine that Lovie would be cool with just losing. If he doesn’t have the money to implement a plan b coaching assistant then it’s not because he’s stubborn or a bad manager. If the money isn’t there then you have to work with what’s in the building
October 29th, 2014 at 12:58 pm
I’m also NOT just saying this because I’m a Nole either. It just makes good business sense from what I can tell. The Bucs drafted Vinny out of UM and I was a new fan to the team so I didn’t buy season tickets, but I did go to about 6 games that season, because of Vinny.
I was a Canes fan back then. Drafting Vinny drew me into buying tickets.
I’ll even put my belief that he’s going to shine in the NFL aside. Winston will sell crazy amounts of tickets and after this 2-14 we are all about to endure. It will take an in-state FSU QB… Jamies Winston to sell tickets.
Manziel and Mariota not so much as to what Winston would bring to the cash registers at One Buc. That’s just my smart business way of thinking outside of his talent level.
I think there is a VERY good chance that he’s going to be a Buc. Mosre so then they rest of you. You guys just want to put the Lovie whammy on it and say he’ll never draft such a troublemaker and I’m saying the Glazers will MAKE him do it.
We’ll see who gets it right…long ways to go.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:00 pm
It doesn’t help that the more Lovie talks the more he sounds like Raheem 2.0!
October 29th, 2014 at 1:00 pm
In the 20 years I have been a fan I can never remember the bucs being this bad. And to think that he was able to hand pic the entire team from the general manager to the very last player is very sad.
As long as Lovie is the coach I will not go to another game or buy anymore merchandise.
Please get rid of him now so we can have some hope again. Anything will be better
October 29th, 2014 at 1:03 pm
If you can Bite the Bullet on giving Up a 1st round prospect & $16 million for a corner. Don’t run now…Chest Up. Take that blow. Let Hardy run the show for the rest of the season.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:05 pm
1987 if you seriously think Lovie is drafting Crab Legs you are sadly mistaken. Pester the Bucs season ticket office all you want, Lovie is not doing it. He needs to be fired for it to happen. No other way, none. If he wouldn’t take immature Manziel, he’s not taking Sociopath Winston.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:07 pm

There’s no Salary Cap for Caoches
Billionaire’s can afford to add an extra $Mill to their operating expenses. And right it off somewhere else. No Excuses

There’s no Salary Cap for Coaches
October 29th, 2014 at 1:07 pm
Bonzai…….This was a team that was ready to go 8-8 and/or maybe the playoffs according to every prognosticator out there and true bucs fans who watched the team last year. The team was ready they were supposed to be the KC chiefs of 14, heck the texans are better with a new coach and show promise…..Lovie deserves to be fired if they end up 1-15, just like richard williamson, just like raheem and schiano….I think schiano deserved one more year and a good QB but that is the past…the future is today and lovie has shown no reason to believe he can fix this…….maybe he didnt say rebuilding because he is into destroying
October 29th, 2014 at 1:11 pm
Losing seasons devalue franchises. You do whatever you can, to serve up a proper team. If you’ve gotta spend a little more on coaching…done deal.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:12 pm
hopefully Lovie will not be in a position to draft or not draft Jamis…or anyone else..start fresh next year with a new coaching staff….get it over with…better next year than the following year/s
October 29th, 2014 at 1:12 pm
TBBF…the better poll should be on an FSU website.
Ask them how likely it is for them to buy Buc season tickets if they draft Winston.
98% of them would say very likely!
That’s into the 10’s of thousands.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:19 pm
@ Patrick
Sorry, I’m not buying that excuse…
This is the NFL… NOT POP WARNER…
Lovie made a piss poor decision to hire Tedford. Now he is making it worse by doing absolutely nothing…
Unless the plan is to “tank the season for Winston” this makes zero sense to me…

EXACTLY….if it ends up 1-15, why let him get another year…..he blew it up time to restart new coach new qb new start by lovie
October 29th, 2014 at 1:24 pm
@luvmybucs and mac – they don’t have a salary cap but we do have owners that have to pay for the operations of the bucs and their soccer team. the bucs are clearly the lesser priority and if the glazers set a budget then you can’t just go spending millions of someone else’s money without them giving you the go ahead. The Glazers are business guys and they know better than to just write a blank check for these guys to do whatever they want
October 29th, 2014 at 1:25 pm
@BUCBANZI ALL THE NEGATIVE PEOPLE! what are the positives really! what have u been watching. wow!
October 29th, 2014 at 1:27 pm
Buc1987, if they aren’t attaching their credit card numbers with a pre-approved withdrawal for season tickets upon taking the poll, it means nothing.
“More likely”? Yeah, if I put up a poll saying “Would you be more likely to buy Bucs season tickets if we could tell you right now the team would be 12-4” it too would be 98%. Doesn’t mean people actually WILL buy season tickets.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

Patrick-I’ve got LUV & Respect for you, because through it all…. your a fan.
But no matter how you flip it brotha-No excuses.

bucrightoff …FSU fans WILL.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:29 pm
bu1987. has a hard on for this immature idiot! Winston !
October 29th, 2014 at 1:31 pm
Fire Lovie…..wasted post….waste of time….not happening…you heard it here first.
Keep that up for about 3 years…..what a fool!!!
October 29th, 2014 at 1:31 pm
Me and 30,000 FSU-Buc fans are standing by to hear that name called on draft day. I’ll order season tickets thee VERY next day and 30,000 others will follow me in the coming weeks….
To deny that won’t happen if they get Winston. Makes one look silly in my eyes.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:32 pm
@87 – there’s a hole in your logic bro. chances are that FSU grads aren’t going to be able to land jobs once they graduate so counting on those dollars for ticket sales is a fool’s errand
October 29th, 2014 at 1:32 pm
Now…..Fire Frazier….that’s another matter altogether!!!
October 29th, 2014 at 1:33 pm
If my last name was Glazer and my team is picking in the top 5 I’m making damn sure that I get this kid.
Hard on or not. It only makes for good business.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:40 pm
Better get used to it too….the draft is months away. The more this team loses the louder my drum will get as we inch towards the spring.
Anyone else and the stands will be empty again next year.
I’ve already called One Buc and made e-mails. I’m not done there. I’m doing much more than just blogging about him on JBF.
I’m going to start gathering up FSU fans to help be bang the drum louder. Only they won’t do it here. It will be in One Buc’s inbox. Flooding it!
So I think mass e-mails and phone calls urging the right people to do the right thing will work. I won’t relent. It will be worse than Manziel and Joe.
I’m on a mission…
October 29th, 2014 at 1:40 pm
I am no FSU fan at all but when we lose the rest of the games and go 1-15 the pick better be winston…..we have weapons for him and build the OL, find a new QB coach and a new OC if they dont fire lovie and see what happens
October 29th, 2014 at 1:41 pm
But you’re logic is crushed by Tebow 1987 cause whether you want to admit this or not as an FSU homer, Tebow is a miles bigger legend in Florida than Jameis is. Jameis has actually brought a ton of shame to FSU (mostly that;s on Jimbo for being an enabler, however). So they aren’t drafting Jameis just to sell tickets. No way, no how.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:43 pm
I have NO confidence this coaching staff could have gone above .500 last year coaching the Seahawks…. A good coach coaches to the strength of the players he has and this staff puts them all out of position…They Look constantly confused and that screams all coaching!
October 29th, 2014 at 1:43 pm
I think they will improve after 3 more games, they probably won’t win, but will be better.
October 29th, 2014 at 1:51 pm
@Tye…lovie has no clue about the offense??? wtf is that….belichek knows his offense ins and outs….at the least lovie has coached football for 30 plus years? maybe get in the offense and help arroyo run it…..sam wyche to jon gruden is the bucs success story….we are in a mire of losing that is supposed to not be possible in the NFL in these days
October 29th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
NO, this team does not have .500 talent! How can you say that after this team started off 0-8 and finished 4-12 last season(which included 3 blowouts to close the season)?!?!?!
Please stop embarrassing yourselves with these posts.
LOVIE AINT GOING ANYWHERE!!!
“It’s as simple as that”(Texas Accent) – Lovie Smith

“Confident” (23.75), “Very Confident” (7.36), “Totally Confident” (5.17).>
I can’t believe that there 36 out of 100 fans can be that stupid.
October 29th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
Buc87’s logic of the Glazer’s wanting to sell tickets is so far out in left field. Ticket revenue is such a small part of the revenue stream of an owner – Joe has said this many times. If owners were so worried about selling tickets, the Jacksonville owner could have signed Tebow to hold a clip board and prob sold another 5-10K tickets, but he didn’t.
Another thing, Barron and Casillas were just run out of Tampa by Lovie The Holy Roller and they had just minor rules violations early in the year. You think he’s going to bring in an alleged rapist and admitted thief?
October 29th, 2014 at 2:22 pm
^Yup, every NFL team is profitable off the TV deal alone. The ticket money is a nice extra but not essential to success.
October 29th, 2014 at 2:30 pm
If anyone thinks a businessman, much less an NFL owner is NOT concerned with every single revenue stream, especially those which can show dramatic increase….you are clueless !…season tickets…concessions…parking….merchandise rev….is all GRAVY that goes directly into each franchise owners pockets…no sharing
October 29th, 2014 at 2:31 pm
Look who the patriots picked up in the last 2 days.
They picked up three players to help advance and move the team forward.
Look how the patriots preformed the first 4 weeks – O-Line sucked and Brady Sucked. They changed the game plan to allow Brady more time to throw. And now they look unstoppable. That is all coaching.
We have no Coaching.
Fire Lovie Smith.

October 29th, 2014 at 2:38 pm
Is it billboard time JOE? As the undisputed benefactor of the “torch and pitchfork” mob, you apparently set the pace. This poll is a perfect example that.
October 29th, 2014 at 2:41 pm
2-14? The only other winnable game I see is the Redskins game, and they just stunned the Cowboys with a 3rd string QB in DALLAS. This team will almost certainly go 1-15, should be winless if Mike Tomlin hadn’t snorted whatever he did before the game to cough it up to our sorry ass team. Worst part is they probably don’t even have to tank, this team is that bad. 🙁
October 29th, 2014 at 2:45 pm
@lightingbuc
Well Lovie already has reckless drivers, potheads, pill-poppers, airport gun-toting, and DUI holding players on his team.
October 29th, 2014 at 2:45 pm
JO Mama right on…..
October 29th, 2014 at 2:46 pm
My greatest fear is that the Bucs win the last two games..Saints & Packers who will be resting their starters looking forward to the post season..Buc win…meaningless
October 29th, 2014 at 2:47 pm
Of course they care about revenue streams RastaMon, they just don’t need to sell tickets to be solvent. It’s not like other sports where they need ticket revenue (the NHL in particular), it’s just a nice bonus. So no NFL team will ever draft a player just to sell tickets. Money is nice but not needed. Again Tebow being the textbook example, the Bucs could have got 3-5 years of sellouts just drafting him. But so what? Jameis is an immature sociopath. Do people think he’s gonna mature when he’s given boatload of money in a party city like Tampa? Please….
October 29th, 2014 at 2:50 pm
People are waking up to the reality that Lovie has zero ability to spot talent and should never have been given control over personnel.
Could be a long 3-4 years coming.

What happened to the revelation that Winston took money for signing autographs? It was swept under the rug with the growing pile of dirt. I know others have done it and are doing it. Manziel was accused, also let off. Gurley is getting some punishment for doing the same thing. The NCAA is selectively protecting some players.

You’re smart enough to know that any guy that is qualified for that job is already working a job for somebody else. Coaches, like players, don’t just grow on trees.
