Barron Trade Was Dominik-Like Fleecing Of Rams
October 28th, 2014Once a upon a time, the Bucs hired a new general manager who had a disappointing No. 4 overall draft pick from two years earlier on his hands.
After letting the new coaching staff get a good sniff of the guy, that GM shipped the disappointing player to the Bears and Lovie Smith for a second-round draft pick.
Of course, Joe’s referencing former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik’s trade of Gaines Adams in 2009.
It was a stunning fleecing of Lovie and Bears GM Jerry Angelo. The trade today of shaky safety Mark Barron, the No. 7 overall pick in 2012, to the Rams reminds Joe of that deal.
Kudos to Bucs general manager Jason Licht and Lovie for getting two draft picks for a player they didn’t want, a player who appears to be a bust.
On top of that, the lowly Rams aren’t exactly going to have a low fourth-round pick.
Joe loves the deal, which Bucs fans are going to be awfully happy about come April.
October 28th, 2014 at 7:42 pm
Its all about what we do with the picks. They could have sent over 10 1st rounders but if you don’t pick right, it won’t matter.
October 28th, 2014 at 7:43 pm
Joes,
Great job on the radio today. Great report on this trade. I couldn’t agree more.
The 4th round pick gains what we gave for Mankins and the 6th is better than our 7th.
Can Banks play FS? For goodness sakes Barron was a square peg in a round hole.
October 28th, 2014 at 7:45 pm
Roll tide -I always thought mark should have been a 4th round pick. Still cant believe Greg and Dom drafted him over Luke
October 28th, 2014 at 7:46 pm
” On top of that, the lowly Rams aren’t exactly going to have a high fourth-round pick.” Er, shouldn’t that be ”low”??
October 28th, 2014 at 7:46 pm
Not to nit-pick, but Adams was forth overall, behind Russell, Megatron and Joe Thomas. I know as I would have been so happy with either CJ or JT.
October 28th, 2014 at 7:52 pm
Gaines Adams was the #4 pick in the draft Joe.
L&L decided that they had seen enough and that Barron is not a fit for what they need out of the SS position. Sure looked that way to me as well so I understand the move. Hate to get a 4th and a 6th for someone who was drafted #7 overall just 2 1/2 years ago – but that was simply a very bad pick by Dom and Schiano. A pick you can’t miss on – well they did and pretty majorly.
We are much better off getting rid of Barron now and getting a couple picks for him – than suffering through another year and a half of bad play before they would give up and release him.
Barron was rated the 66th best safety in the league by PFF. Um there are only 64 starting safety’s in the NFL at any given moment. LOL
October 28th, 2014 at 7:54 pm
The DRAFTING of Barron was a Dominik-like fleecing of the BUCS.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:02 pm
You can say it’s a fleecing if Barron doesn’t improve at all. If he does? We got fleeced. So it’s waaaay too early to call this anything other than a trade. If Barron develops and the picks are wasted, we got fleeced, it’s that simple.
Joe I think is just looking for any victory in this utterly pathetic season. But based off Lovie and Licht’s current talent evaluation skills, who is really confident we will come out ahead in this trade? Buehler? Anyone?
October 28th, 2014 at 8:08 pm
Joe the “fleccing” as you so call it, only works when something that you traded for turns out to be valuable. Dominick traded a player for a second round pick that busted!!!
October 28th, 2014 at 8:09 pm
Joe, you may recall moments after the Bucs used the 7th overall pick to take a safety that Blesto rated as “too slow” and of “questionable football intelligence”, one well-connected poster called the pick a waste, and predicted that the player would be a position coach before he hit 30. Well, today the Bucs got the message and traded that player for a Big Mac and large fries. So to BigDaddyNole and Swampie Fly says “I told you so!”
And to repeat the now obvious, the Bucs threw away the future when they kissed King Jon’s ring and ran off Rich McKay who built the Super Bowl champions.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:10 pm
Don’t be surprised if anyone of them goes to a real team and starts playing at a probowl level
October 28th, 2014 at 8:10 pm
Mark Dominick was no better than Bruce Allen as a GM. His number of draft busts continues to grow!
October 28th, 2014 at 8:11 pm
Another wasted pick and it was great schiano
October 28th, 2014 at 8:12 pm
@TpaBayFlyFisher
The Glazers brought back the Succaneer creamsicle era of football when they fired Gruden in January of 2009. Since then, we’ve been a laughingstock.

Barron did not fit this offense, because he has poor coverage skills, that were hidden, by all the greatness around him at Alabama.
Yes, he can hit hard, but that is no longer an asset, in today’s Pussified NFL.
The type of headhunting he excelled in is a relic of the past, and will get you penalized today.
I am so excited by this trade, since we basically swapped a huge mistake, who cost us several blown coverages, for TWO PICKS !
October 28th, 2014 at 8:16 pm
No loss really. Barron was decent vs the run, but couldn’t cover Stephen Hawking on a post route, let alone Jimmy Graham!

I also think it was a good trade. Both these guys more than likely would have been cut in the offseason, so it’s always good to get something instead of nothing. And before this trade we did not have a 4th round pick, so this helps.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:19 pm
Wow Joe, I thought you were better than that. You’re calling this a win for the Bucs already???
If Barron becomes a probowler and those 2 picks the Bucs choose barely get on the field, would you still call that a fleecing? Haha, Joe seriously, this is like saying you’ve won on the 7th hole of an 18 hole golf course.
I have a feeling you’re going to be eating your words. lol.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:19 pm
@justin
Great comment. I still can’t figure out why people love Mark Dominic so much.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:21 pm
I suspect this defense is going to be unrecognizable next season with all the new players that will be coming in. Might be a good thing.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:22 pm
I believe this organization is a breeding ground for busts. We just don’t know how to develop young talent and we force them to do things their not suited for a lot of times. I for one won’t be surprised if Barron and Casillas excel with their new teams.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:23 pm
Joe,heard you on WDAE. Just might make me listen again.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:42 pm
As long as Barron doesnt go to St Louis and blow up, I’m ok with this move… I thought Barron had potential, but Schiano broke down and wrecked more careers than he had W’s…
Dom was by no means a top tier GM, but dude had no coaches to mold the talent he brought in… Sh***t, we STILL dont have any coaches that know how to mold raw talent into pro-caliber studs.
…still wish we couldve gotten rid of 22. a 7th round pick, free dinner coupons to beef o bradys (with the purchase of a meal of equal or greater value)… anything!
October 28th, 2014 at 8:44 pm
Yep, the Bucs sure are great at missing on a high draft pick only to trade him away a couple years later for a low round pick(s). Sure would be nice if they’d hit those high picks instead of “fleecing” other teams for gamble picks.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:44 pm
@Stevie Blart – You don’t have to know the future player performance results of a trade to make a judgement on it. Barron was not working out for the Bucs, so they traded him and got picks, which they need. Doesn’t matter if he somehow magically becomes a superstar with the Rams. He wasn’t performing here. Not that hard to comprehend.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:47 pm
A nice outcome for the Bucs; I am happy. Though, my thoughts keep reverting to someone yclept ”Luke”, for some reason….
October 28th, 2014 at 8:58 pm
Bust!!!
October 28th, 2014 at 9:00 pm
John Gruden wanted to trade our first and second round picks to get Calvin Johnson and that would have been Gains Adams Sabby Piscitelli and Aaron Sears All the more reason why we miss Jon Gruden
October 28th, 2014 at 9:08 pm
“John Gruden wanted to trade our first and second round picks to get Calvin Johnson and that would have been Gains Adams Sabby Piscitelli and Aaron Sears All the more reason why we miss Jon Gruden”
Damn I miss that dude… Miss that Fire! …That psycho just needed a real GM, instead of that yes-man Allen… Which I’m beginning to think Licht is.
October 28th, 2014 at 9:39 pm
Good move. Barron was below average and not a good fit for a cover 2 D. Goldson needs to do as well.
October 28th, 2014 at 10:18 pm
I don’t trust Lovie personnel wise…
October 28th, 2014 at 11:28 pm
Speaking of “reaches”… It’s a reach calling this a fleecing. The Browns getting a first rounder for Richardson was a fleece. Complementing Dominik is always a reach…and yes…the 2nd rounder for Gaines (R.I.P ) was used on Sabby The Goat I believe. Good God…no wonder this franchise has stunk up the joint for over a decade.

October 28th, 2014 at 11:31 pm
Sorry…the Sabby pick was from the Booger alleged fleecing of the Colts…the Gaines pick was used on Benn…tough to keep episodes of this $hit$how straight.

I think the talent from this year’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks will be a big plus moving forward. We don’t know that for sure – and need to see a lot more of Simms – but IMO early results and eye ball test on Evans and ASJ equate to a good job drafting this year by L&L. These guys are definitely talented and contributing as rookies. If Simms is as advertised – then we got 3 good offensive weapons by drafting them. (and maybe Herron will figure out how to hang onto a catch consistently and be a good, speedy 3rd WR as well).
If they can do a good job again and find 3 or 4 more starters in the coming draft (QB, OL, DE hopefully) – then we are on our way with a solid base of good young players + GMC and LVD to move forward with.
I know it sucks to be a Bucs fan right now and has for awhile – but Lovie Smith is sure as hell not the idiot coach with no eye for talent that some of you seem to continually say or imply. If our team looks like this in Oct next year – then we know we probably are screwed for awhile and such vitriol becomes more expected – but the give the new coach a 1/2 a chance at least – he’s got a pretty good track record and he stepped into a hot mess of a team and then lost his Offensive Coordinator – It was an obvious mistake to push the “win Now” mantra but I’m betting that was a directive from the Glazers to boost the hype and increase season ticket sales this year. L&L knew they were short on talent and tried hard to plug a bunch of holes via FA for this year which didn’t work out all that well (rarely does).
But I do believe the players on this team are going to turn it around and win some games moving forward and build some momentum for heading into next year. laugh if you want – but I say his team will get better this year than what we have seen so far – and of that I am fairly sure. Call me an optimist but I bet it happens and they win at least 5 games this year. Just enough to miss out on the top 2 QBs – LOL
October 29th, 2014 at 8:55 am
Again, Licht & Lovie’s biggest mistake (so far) was failure to set expectations. They were saying that we shouldn’t be patient yet guys like Chris Landry were saying that we had a crappy roster with no depth, and we shouldn’t expect to win many games this year.
Lovie should have pulled an Yzerman and said “We have a plan” which translates to “We’ll stink for a while but we’ll get there.” People are picking the Lightning to contend because they’ve built a great roster, mostly through draft choices with some really good FAs. The Bucs – not so much.
October 29th, 2014 at 10:35 am
Today’s fleecing will be next year’s whining after Barron’s play improves getting away from Lovie Smith’s team. Apparently I have to repeat the obvious, with the exception of Glennon name one other player on this team that was also on the team last year who’s play has improved? Frazier/Smith…masterminds of the last place defense in the NFL this year, and some people here think Barron was the problem!?
October 29th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
Fleecing?
Please.
October 29th, 2014 at 3:21 pm
I’m glad we got those picks for Barron, he just can’t cover. We need about 20 more picks unfortunately with all of the holes on the team. Next year will be better, but probably not good yet.
October 29th, 2014 at 3:31 pm
We need two new Safeties, a corner, a nickel, 1 MLB (move Foster to SLB), 2 DE’s, a Franchise QB, a Center (who can block and doesn’t hike the ball in slow motion), two Guards, a Tackle. Twelve new players minimum and likely a WR, as I think they may want to dump Jackson’s salary next year as his production is going down fast and maybe another slot guy that actually can catch the ball. So that is 12-14 new players. With 8 draft choices, of which getting 4 starters would be doing very well, so we only need to pull in 8-10 other starters in FA. This doesn’t seem feasible in one off season. The holes will continue into next year…sigh…
October 29th, 2014 at 4:48 pm
I say we will trade or release VJax, in the off season. I really hoped things would’ve gotten better for him but truth is he is declining. I really see it now. I Hope we go after N Suh in FA that will help the line, move M Foster 2 rolb & Lv D will kill lolb like he does. Draft a safety a Tru Safety . Release Banks & Bowers. Depending on our selection spot WE need OT & OG but we gotta have a Field General! More than anything. Here is a rundown on our past 25 cent backs.
