Lovie Says QB Plan Doesn’t Call For Change

Avoiding what might have been never-before-seen outrage from Joe, Lovie Smith told media today that changing starting quarterbacks on Sunday is not in his plans.
“If we were going to make a change, I wouldn’t talk about it an awful lot, but the plan isn’t for that,” Lovie said when asked about Josh McCown starting against Cleveland on Sunday.
“I thought Mike did some good things yesterday. You’d always like to have a couple of plays back, but you know, the first thing I thought about as far as improving our ball club wasn’t, ‘We gotta make a change at the quarterback position.'”
“Being able to run the ball will help our offense. The one game that we won, we had the same guy back in the pocket, for the most part the same offensive line.”
So there you have it. Either Lovie now believes Glennon is better than McCown, or Lovie realizes there’s no point to McCown any longer when you can use the time to further evaluate Glennon, or both.
Don’t think for a second McCown isn’t healthy. He is.
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network prior to the Bucs-Vikings game yesterday, Lovie made that very clear: “[McCown’s] hand will not be part of the equation at all. So he’s good to go.”

Finally Lovie speaks without parsing…
This is the right decision….you go with Glennon if there is any chance that he remains a Buc next year….even as a backup….at the very least you draft a QB in any round to compete with him for the starting job.
The McCown experiment has failed except for the backup/mentoring part.
Letting Glennon play will give him experience and give everyone a chance to know for sure what we have.
I hope he overcomes his own negatives and can succeed dispite the odds. That way, we could use our pick to gain extra picks or draft someone who can block or sack a qb.

Jameis Winston is not the answer. O-Line First. Keep VJax we might be able to pick up Mike Williams for less than what we traded for and maybe redo his contract.
Get Incognito, Draft an O-Line man in the first round, get Defense in second, O line in 3rd.

I love Mike Glennon, but to me he had his worst game as a starter. He had some plays when the pocket was clean, and he couldn’t make the play. I hope it was just a hiccup.
The defense finally had a great game. It didn’t show in the stats, but the defense as a whole looked much better.
Can’t wait to see Charles Sims play, he HAS to be better than Doug Martin and Bobby Rainey.

I honestly think glennon is playing scared. Can’t say I blame him. It didn’t take long maybe first series before he got crushed right in his ribs. Add that plus the beat down he got last game. Your mind starts playing tricks on you.
People want to evaluate glennon like he’s a 5 year vet with a running game, an offensive line and good receivers. He has non of that. For God sakes Vjax had 1 catch for 13 yards. And I like Vjax but we gotta do better than that.
When a team can’t produce a 100 yard rusher in weeks and there QB gets sacked 5 times it’s pretty obvious where the problem is.

He knows how to run and process a pro-style system. He’s not a runner, but, he can run. When he does scramble, he’s looking down field for an open receiver.

With all due respect to each concerned party, this writer observes Lovie has never said anything. “Lovie says” can only be interpreted as Lovie uttered several scripted words today or any other day. Sorry, but the right move is McCown. The Bucs will be drafting a franchise QB next year, and you need to know whether pricey McCown or trade-valuable Glennon is the guy to back him up.
After 17 starts we’ve seen enough of Mike Glennon’s craptastic B- performances to know what he is capable of. McCown with an offensive line we don’t really know yet… he may be a total loss but *he* is the unknown quantity at this point.
McCown’s got a big price tag next year but no cap hit if he’s cut. That’s something we have to know now.
Anyone who thinks Mike Glennon is the franchise QB of the Bucs’ future has blinders on.

This is what I call throwing Glennon to the wolves. This offensive line will have Glennon absolutely destroyed by season’s end. His credibility will be forever linked to the worst offensive line in recent history. It will snowball his career. I like Mike Glennon, the QB, a future leader, enough to suggest that we trade him before the deadline. Send him to a team that could put him into a better situation and allow him the time to grow. I believe he could be an emerging star in the right system. Just not here …sadly ..not now.

It is inconsistent to say the season is lost and we should try to lose games so we should bench Glennon.
I thnk most that want to bench Glennon are afraid that he just might be good enough for Lovie to stick with him.
It makes absolutely no sense to start McCown unless you think he can win a bunch of games and get us into the playoffs…
Perhaps if Glennon plays well enough someone may want to trade for him in the off season….then we would draft a QB and keep McCown as backup…..
Glennon very well may not be the answer but there is no harm done by continuing with him.

Maybe Glennon not having enough time is a GOOD THING! I mean we all saw what he did when he HAD TIME with that “Josh McCown like” throw to Mike Evans for an INT! I mean Tim Tebow threw the ball better than that!!
It’s throws like that are probably the cause for all these running plays we call!(The coaches must see it in practice.)

As much as I despise Lovie coaching this team (yes, I’m one of the few Schiano supporters) I agree with you. There is absolutely NO way Lovie doesn’t get at least two years. For the Glazers, paying fired coaches has to be more of a pain in the butt to them than having a sucky team.

He has single handedly set this franchise back further than what he was handed…offense defense and special teams, this team is putrid and that rests solely on lovie and licht, bad draft, bad free agents…the bucs have the easiest schedule in the NFL, and look horrible, Bucs would be an underdog against the Jets in Tampa, they are 6 point dogs against the browns and that lining is going higher, I have been waiting for improvement or light but there is nothing and no inspiration from lovie or fire….hire gruden and be done with it

People talk about drafting a “franchise quarterback” like is is an exact science. I am assuming that you mean a QB who is a game changer, someone who can win games pretty much by themselves. If you look back to the 2013 class, there were no franchise qb’s. Actually as of this date, we got the best of the class in Glennon.
It’s early but what from what I have seen so far, there may not have been any in the 2014 draft. Bortles is throwing balls to the other team, Bridgewater makes good decisions and accurate short throws but the longer passes were awful yesterday. Carr, maybe and Manziel? Well you have to play first. Maybe one of these will stand the test of time and be a franchise qb but that conclusion is for a later date.
2012 was a different story with Luck Wilson RGIII, Foles etc. But I think anyone who believes Winston and Mariota are sure things are making quite an assumption.

I’m good because either one will get us a top 5 pick so doesn’t matter. Personally to get the top pick in the draft I’ll take Glennon over josh mccown because Glennon refuses to record a stat of having run for a first down. There’s no need to make a change because it’s already obvious the starting quarterback for this franchise is not on the roster this year. These aren’t lovie’s guys, and even mccown was a temporary fill in, lol they are both done because nothing lovie can do on defense in the draft will affect the anger these fans have….. All he can do to but himself more time with the game is draft a quarterback. No more waiting for another average qb to develop he’s a backup

Team started off 0-8 last year, managed to win 4 games and finish 4-12, but got DOMINATED the last 3 games. I mean I can sell that to someone who doesn’t know the game of football!!

2nd pick a middle linebacker
somewhere after that maybe a QB

I agreed with the decision to go with Glennon for the past few games. We’ve figured out that he’s toast.
Now it’s time to go back to McCown to see if he deserves to even be on the roster next year.
What a mess. I think the Bucs need to use EVERY draft choice next year on a QB. One of them is bound to work out.

@buc4lyfe. Guess I saw a different game than you. I really liked Bridgewater but was surprised he didn’t look better. He had a lot more time, a running game and receivers running WIDE open, many of him he missed by wide margins, especially the deeper throws. I am no Glennon fan either but he was pressured all day, we couldn’t run the ball and our receivers were never open like his were, not even close.
Glennon and McCown would look great against our defense, just like they did in camp. The Vikings defense is so much tougher than ours. They have about 25 sacks so far to our 10. Come on.

Lovie’s decisions are made with what he has to work with. He did’nt exactly say Glennon is the starter for the rest of the season, just that he sees no need to change right now. Finally, a half definite support of MG spoken. That’s one of the smartest things you have said yet Lovie. He knows QB is a lesser problem than what surrounds MG. I think the QB of the present will also be the QB next year and I’m fine with that.

One of the joys of the Dungy era was the players were class acts with the exception of Sapp. Brooks is just the best. Ronde, Lynch, Warrick Dunn, Mike Alstott…these were guys I loved having represent our fair city.

In the spring of 2003, Incognito got in a fight during practice and was suspended indefinitely by head coach Frank Solich. By this time, Solich and his staff were concerned enough about Incognito’s behavior to send him to the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas for anger management treatment.] Incognito was reinstated by the start of the season and started 13 games at left tackle. Despite his impressive physical tools, ESPN Scouts Inc. noted “his inability to control his emotions both on and off the field is such a significant concern that he’ll likely slip to the later rounds of the draft.”[13]
2007 season[edit]
Incognito played and started at right guard for four games after being inactive for the first four weeks of the season. In early November, Incognito suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss the remainder of season.[14] However, while rehabilitating, it was later revealed that he had been partying nightly.
2008 season[edit]
Incognito started 15 games at right guard for the Rams, also seeing some playing time at center. On October 17, Incognito was fined three times for a total of $35,000 after the game versus the Washington Redskins.[16] His violations during the game included the repeated verbal abuse of a game official, performing a “major face mask” penalty, and performing a chop block penalty. (which wasn’t called during the game.) Incognito’s behavior nearly lead to a loss after his antics cost the Rams 15 yards before the eventual game-winning field goal.
2009 season[edit]
On April 17, 2009, the Rams offered Incognito a one-year tender worth $1.01 million, which he signed on May 3.[19] Incognito started all nine games in which he played for the Rams in 2009. On December 13, during the first half of a 47-7 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Incognito drew two 15-yard penalties for headbutting Titans players. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo benched him for the second half, and the two got into a heated confrontation on the sidelines. It was the second time Incognito had been benched for losing his composure; he’d been pulled from the season opener against Seattle for two personal fouls. I’d rather fire the Glazers than Lovie. Ever since poor Malcolm got sick, (RIP) his sons have put this team into a nosedive and it has finally crashed into the ground. The personnel decisions? Horrible. Firing Gruden, promoting a position coach to HC, scaring Chip Kelly off and having to settle for a mediocre Rutgers coach, then hiring a new HC before the GM. And worst of all, approving the changing of pewter and red to a bunch of clown to further make our franchise a laughing stock.
Let Glennon finish out the year. He could still surprise us but it is doubtful on this team. I would like to see him operate in a respectable offense. A decent running game and protection is all he needs, this team has neither. That being said, Glennon just does not seem to have the “IT” factor. He does not seem to fire up and rally his teammates, but rather just does what he is told to. The QB should be the leader of the offense. I would be ok if the Bucs do not select a QB with their first pick, as long as they fix this atrocious offensive line and give Glennon (or any QB for that matter) a chance.
But the Bucs have a lot of cap room every year, and can likely fix the O-line better through FA. We need a leader on offense. Somebody who rallies his team and and fills them with confidence. That person is Jameis Winston. Say what you want about his character, he is a man on a mission on the gridiron. For all you ranting and raving and the great Marcus Mariota, his stats are widely cushioned by the fact Oregon has a cakewalk schedule year in and year out. When it comes to the big games, Mariota struggles. Last season he lost to a porous Arizona team and Stanford. Damn near lost to the mighty Oregon State Beavers. This season he lost to an unranked Arizona team again and the Stanford game is this week. He cannot beat competitive teams, imagine him against an NFL team. Winston, however, has never lost a game, including the national championship.

When it comes to the rest of the team, I expect an overhaul this offseason. Trades and releases will be plentiful. We need to stock up on salary cap and draft picks to TRY and fix this team. There are so many holes, it will probably take more than one more season to repair. The only people worth keeping on this team IMO are GMC, LVD, Glennon, Evans, Banks, ASJ, Lansanah, maybe Dotson. Everyone else is so bad or mediocre they could be replaced easily, but I don’t expect everyone to wash out, we don’t have the resources to replace them all. I like Rainey, Tandy, Spence, and Murphy as backups. And Glennon if we go QB. I suspect they will retain Verner, Barron, Martin, and unfortunately Johnson and Collins as well no matter how sub-par their play has been. If Vjax isn’t traded they will keep him too, but I believe they will sooner or later. Goldson, Koenen, Johnson and Collins need to go, they play too terribly for their high salaries, but like I said they will probably keep Johnson and Collins because Lovie is too damn stubborn after just signing them.
With our picks and money we need to go after OL, DE, DB, WR, P, returner (can’t believe we passed up McCluster and Hester), and QB if a good one is available. Maybe MLB if Foster doesn’t improve. Also need to take a look at lapdog Licht. It is clear Lovie has final say. We need a real GM to keep him in check so he does not make stupid decisions like cutting our best DB, railroading our O-line, and signing glorified backups like Johnson and Collins to huge contracts.

Better question is how do you drive your team down the field on your last drive of the game, throw a go ahead TD in the final moments, and still have people whining about you? Instead of your defense that choked up a late lead against a rookie backup or the TE that you completed a pass to only to be fumbled to lose the game?
I get it. Glennon was less than stellar against Minny, but when the game was on the line, and his team was down by more than 3 points, he put them on his back and led them down the field and scored a TD. You wanna argue about he should have been better earlier, fine. But dont sit there and continue to cry about him after he just put the team in position to win and was rewarded with crappy defense and poor ball security.
If we are in position to take a QB better than Glennon, I’m all for it. But people’s opinions vary about who that my be around these parts. Which is fine by me, but apparently not by others. 😉

Stop feeding me a turd and telling me it’s steak. For the first time since 1980, I chose to go speck fishing rather than stay home and watch the next futile attempt of my beloved Bucs. I did sneak peaks with my Iphone as the game wound down and even predicted a blunder to find a way to lose after giving up the lead in regulation. Lovie needs to admit this is in fact a rebuilding year. I do not have a problem with losing a bunch of games as we learn and get better. We absolutely should have won against the Panthers, the Rams, the Saints, and the Vikings. Because of sloppy penalties, inconsistent effort and inproper execution, missed interceptions, fumbles, lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks, horrific predictable play calling on offense and defense, we are now once again the laughing stock of the NFL. Find out who can play and make plays and rebuild your offensive line and obtain a game changing pass rusher (whatever the cost I don’t care) or you will hear crickets at Raymond James. The awful product the Glazers are feeding us must improve now. Thank goodness we have a competitive Lightning team. Go Bucs!

Glennon is ok but NOT the future. He folds under pressure, has a Big arm, sees the field but doesn’t have killer instincts & that’s what u can’t teach. I still like him he deserves a shot. Moving on . Trade banks, Dotson probably could stay but it might be reaching. Keep C Sims & B Rainey . If we picked up Suh in the FA market that would make M Johnson better, L David and M Foster if switched to rolb flats and run games would be better covered. We need a Mlb but those are like folk tales to us. That position is so Major to us in the scheme we use on D! We can adress the safety positions in the draft. That leaves us with OTL & OG gotta draft them early for the next 2seasons . Last , First, Middle we need a QB! First round and get the guy all help he needs.
