“I Don’t Know How Long The Rope Is”

Entering the 2014 season, there were only two — just two — NFC teams with uncertain quarterback situations, Tampa Bay and Minnesota, who kick off at 1 o’clock today at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.
The Vikings opted to draft rookie Teddy Bridgewater in the first round, a pick Joe believes was wise. The Bucs signed a career journeyman quarterback with a losing record to start because they didn’t like their 2013 rookie QB enough.
It was a judgment call that still needs to play out completely for both teams.
Of course, now Mike Glennon is three starts into his audition for next year. The only smart thing is to let Glennon play out the season as the starter.
Former Bucs QB Shaun King, one of three men to lead the Bucs to the NFC title game, said this week on WDAE-AM 620 that there’s no possible way Josh McCown is quarterbacking the Bucs next season, so Glennon is smart play, but “I don’t know how long the rope is.”
It was a wise comment. Joe doesn’t know how much rope Glennon will get, either.
Lovie Smith, for some reason, doesn’t want to go all-in with Glennon publicly. The only logical reason for that is because there is a mythical rope on Glennon.
Joe sure hopes Glennon doesn’t hang himself with a garbage showing today. Joe’s seen enough of the Josh McCown Experiment.

The rope should be endless considering their season is lost. I don’t want to hear all the BS about the division still being up for grabs. Hypothetically speaking lets say they did win the division and hosted a playoff game. Who is really going to expect them to win. They will get ran out of the stadium real quick. What good is it going to do to put Mccown in. They have to see what he has and take the lumps with it.

The mistake is when they instantly handed the job to Mccown. to not even let Glennon compete was a huge mistake. Now the media expects MG8 to look like a starter, without running with the 1’s all offseason, just does not make a lot of sense.

Anyone who says “no way”…..or never….is hanging out there….but I agree with Shaun King that it is “highly unlikely” that McCown will QB the Bucs next year….but if Glennon is traded and they draft a QB….the rookie may not start for a few games and McCown could be our QB under those circumstances.

The end of Doug Martin as a Buc today? Lots of rumours he’ll be gone before Tuesday. Should have traded him in the offseason when they could have got better value. Now I doubt they do better than a 5th rounder.

That’s not what Lovie or Licht said. They said they brought McCown in because they didn’t really know Glennon and thought a veteran QB would help in his development. They moved on McCown quickly because there weren’t to many options available in free agency, and Lovie was comfortable with him leading his offense. Had they not secured McCown when they had, they would have lost him to another team. It wasn’t until Lovie actually got to meet with Glennon and witness his ability to interact in the classroom, work ethic, and interest from other teams did he realize that Glennon had the potential to be the future franchise QB. Why can’t you be positive on game day? geez

i agree t-down-tampa…. glennon will always be a viable backup in this league. pray for mariotta to be available when we pick. hell, iwould even take famous jameis over a slug like glennon.

Realist is dead on. For the second year in a row, a turd was laid in the first few games without Glennon, and now it is his responsibility to polish said turd.

Hey JOE,
You forgot to mention one detail in your post we passed on Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr. All possible franchise QB’s. In Round five we took Pamphile…passing on Aaron Murray and AJ Mcarrion. The Josh MClown expirement will continue to prove costly, years after he is retired. Glennon should have gotten the starting job and a draft pick used on Murray-Mcarrion. 10 million wasted on a two year contract for a career back-up / journeyman.
