Lovie’s Unhappy With Physicality

October 22nd, 2014

safetieschat

The Bucs are too soft. That’s not Joe complaining, it was the sentiment expressed by Lovie Smith this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

Heck, Lovie wasn’t even asked if the team was lacking manliness.

In response to a question about the expected return of Dashon “Hawk” Golson on Sunday, Lovie shared his enthusiasm for what Hawk might bring.

“He’s one of our best players. Yeah, we haven’t been as physical as I’d like us to be, as we would like to be,” Lovie said. “He’s a physical player, leadership, experience, all of the above.”

Remember that “mentality” Lovie lectured players about when they returned from the bye week, now it’s awfully clear to Joe that, in part, he challenged them to man up and stop getting outworked, out-willed and beaten down like inferior competitors.

Perhaps Hawk will be unchained and given the nod by his head coach to deliver an old-school hit without fear of consequences by the flag-football-loving referees? Maybe Lovie would sanction that behind the scenes to inspire the defense.

Bring in Sam…..he’ll get physical…..if you know what I mean!!!

  2. OneLove Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan HAHAHAHA!!

  3. BFFL Says:

The Hawk is useless with today’s NFL rules. It is no longer viable to force incompletions with hard hitting. The safety now must be able to cover and deflect the pass. The hawk has never shown this ability.

  4. BUC4LIFE79 Says:

One at this point can only hope that Lovie is personally disturbed enough by the defense that he has put on the field so far to tell Goldson str8 up that he’s got his back on lowering the boom on recievers across the middle now and then…DEAR LORD one can still HOPE!!!

  5. 911bucs Says:

And your recognizing that the team is to soft in week 7?

  6. mac Says:

This team is getting beat because of inconsistent play, missed assignments, untimely penalties, lack of talented depth, poor offensive and defensive schemes and horrid special teams.

This team plays sloppy, undisciplined and without emotion.

These issues all point to poor coaching and Lovie better get it turned around quick. Will he survive another 0-4 start?

Rah Morris – 2 years (won 10 games one of them)
Schiano – 2 years (went 4 and 4 his last 8, stuck with Freeman mess)
Lovie – 2 years? If things don’t improve quick, why would he deserve more?

“I’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air…..

    So there”- Lorde Team

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

And who talked to Lovie (Howell) and his staff about being outcoached?

  9. Buc1987 Says:

I wonder what L&L is going to tell us next off season. We don’t expect our fans to be patient and we’re going to make this team relevant again. This time we really mean it, please you have to believe us, please.

  10. DB55 Says:

If Goldson goes head hunting then Goodell might kick him out the league.

As of today we only have 4 picks in the draft. How to you rebuild with only 4-5 picks 2 years in a row?

  12. RealityCheck Says:

Here’s the thing, “Hawk” only delivers his big hits after the receiver catches the ball 30 yards downfield, so who cares? It’s not a mentality issue, they are a physically weaker team.

  13. james Says:

tampa is so non physical they got beat sunday on their bye week, team ,players, owners ,suck I for one am sick of this B.S. year after year and I hope they move to0 freaking England where the stinking glazers want them any way. then maybe we can eventually get a professional football franchise that can be more than relevant ,competent, competitive. oh yea I forgot to mention that head coach of theirs MR LOVIE SMITH – news flash-YOU ARE THE WORST HIRE IN FRANCHISE HISTORY- YOU SUCK, FRAZIER SUCKS, DEFENSE SUCKS AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST YOUR FA’s are horrible, AND YOUR STINKING GM SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!hope you have a nice day but not really

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @DB55

We have all but our 4th….so we have 6……we traded one of our 2 5th rounders

  15. Mike J Says:

Physicality needs to start up front, & that is what has been lacking most.

  16. pick6 Says:

i’ll go the opposite direction of most posters and offer up a positive. turnovers later in the game are born out of things you do to teams early in the game. a hit from goldson might not cause a turnover when he makes it, but it might plant the seed for a guy not fighting\laying out for a ball later and maybe that is the difference between the millionth catch over the middle vs the bucs and a guy with alligator arms creating an opportunity for our team to take the ball away

  17. DB55 Says:

    Tbbucfan

Ok, cool. Thats better I guess. Not enough, imo, but it’s better than 4. We need 13 picks to be honest 10 in the first 2 rounds. Lol

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

STOP SIGNING & DRAFTING CHOIR BOYS. Our roster is freaking full of them.

  19. OneLove Says:

    @james

Sounds like you need a hug… We should pick up Michael Sam… Just for you….

  20. RealityCheck Says:

@OneLove…holy hell the Michael Sam “jokes” are soooooo funny and not tired and lame at all.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

This is what it looks like on Sunday with a bunch of choir boys (gotta have balance)

That’s all well and good but are the players learning anything because from where I sit this lot is not ready to play on game day.
Schiano’s teams never lacked physicality and played their gaps with authority. Maybe when no one is looking Lovie could take some notes from what his predecessor was able to do on defense.

  23. billy buckaroo Says:

I think there might just possibly be a few players unhappy with Lovie

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Speaking of Schiano the Great (Joe don’t steal that nickname it’s all mine), he was on NFL Network total access tonight, discussing how the Bears can turn things around.

  25. HawaiianBuc Says:

“As of today we only have 4 picks in the draft. How to you rebuild with only 4-5 picks 2 years in a row?”

    ——–

Hmmmmm, I don’t know, maybe you MAKE GOOD PICKS!!!!!! Quantity doesn’t mean jack if you keep drafting Myron Lewis’s. It’s as if people really believe that despite the fact we haven’t drafted well in like forever, we can just have a bunch of picks and maybe the sun will shine on a dog’s arse and we’ll get a bunch of good ones. Do you think if we had that 4th round pick (from the Mankins deal), we’d be able to draft a starting offensive lineman? Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Good luck with that.

We don’t need more draft picks, we need to make better decisions with who we draft. It’s as simple as that. If you botch the #7 pick like we did with Barron (I’ve finally run out of excuses and have to admit he’s a bust), you’re going to be in bad shape. You just can’t screw up those picks. It’s looking like we did pretty good this year, but it’s really early, and this isn’t the first time the picks look good early on (but ended up as trash).

  26. Bubashep Says:

No. The coaching is too soft!

  27. steve guccon Says:

tampabaybucfan. thats so wrong yet so funny haha.

  28. OneLove Says:

“Schiano The Great” LOL I needed a good laugh! Thanks!

  29. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Must be fun to be a Buc these days. First we question their brains, too slow to pick up a defense, and now their manhood.

BTW Goldson could survive with today’s rules. Stop hitting helmet to helmet.

Here’s a concept. Those old enough to remember Tommy Nobis remember him driving fear into the hearts of defenders along with lots of other old time defenders by planting their helmets between the numbers. Yeah doing that only knocks the wind out of a guy or bruises his ribs instead of concussing him but it still sends an effective message. And it does it without ruining careers and life after football with brain damage.

  30. Owlykat Says:

Part of the bad defensive play is because of all the three and outs by the offense, putting the defense right back on the field. Second, Licht got rid of the good depth the defense used to have, so starters have to play too long on the field. The better teams can platoon and keep fresh defensive players on the field. So losing our OC is part of the problem, not firing WarFLOP is part of the weak OL play, having shrimp running backs who cannot open holes if none are there is part of it, and Licht’s many bad talent decisions and bringing in his buddies to aid the talent evaluations are also part of it. We needed to hire an OC over this break and should have brought in an Urlacher Clone for free over this break, but so far we have a fumbling shrimp kick returner instead.

  31. AnotherJ Says:

This is coming from Lovie Smith, Who allows Frazier to instruct the defense to line up 7 yards away from the receivers all game long, They act like we’re allergic to blitzing, or shifting, jamming receivers, or any other exotic look when they’re calling in plays for our powder soft defense!

Maybe Lovie should take his own advance, and Stop getting outcoached every weekend!

  32. phil Says:

Lovie is unhappy and we are unhappy with Lovie. The only solution is to get some “FIRE LOVIE” billboards.

  33. bucs4lyfe Says:

hard to think anyone on this team is physical when one of your big money guys is nicknamed “Kleenex”

  34. Brandon Says:

With all the Michael Sam jokes it seems I never left work. I’m a middle school teacher.
