Teams Want Vincent Jackson

October 19th, 2014

?????????

Though Vincent Jackson is still, as Joe is typing, a member of the Bucs, NFL insider Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and NFL Network tossed out an interesting but not surprising nugget about the Bucs’ No. 1 wide receiver.

It seems teams — plural — have reached out to Tampa to gauge interest in shipping out Jackson, as NFL.com’s Kevin Patra documents.

1) Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Vincent Jackson:

“They are getting a ton of calls on him,” Rapoport said. “With just one win, I’m told they are open to anything even though they love him as a player.”

Trading Jackson would strip down the NFL’s tallest receivers corps, but perhaps the Bucs believe they have his future replacement in rookie Mike Evans.

Look, this season is toast, in case you haven’t heard. Starting out 1-5 means no playoffs, not the way the Bucs are getting sandblasted by decent offenses.

Jackson has seen better days. He’s becoming almost as well-known for his drops than his catches and touchdowns. Jackson is tied for fourth-most drops among wide receivers and his catch-rate (times targeted/receptions) is 55 percent.

To give one an idea how Jackson is slipping as a reliable receiver, last Sunday in the seal-clubbing by the Crows, Jackson was targeted 13 times. He caught but four of those passes. Obviously, that is not factoring in bad throws, but still, that is a terrible ratio.

If the Bucs can somehow hoodwink a team to cough up a second-round pick, Bucs general manager Jason Licht shouldn’t waste a second getting approval from football operations overlord Lovie Smith for fear the other general manager might sober up before Lovie is reached.

Remember: Anquan Boldin, a better more reliable receiver than Jackson, could only fetch a sixth-round pick on the trade market.

Joe doesn’t think Jackson is in the Bucs’ long-term plans. If a draft pick and salary cap relief could come by trading Jackson, then Joe would listen intently to offers.

Per Rotoworld.com, Jackson two more seasons on his Bucs contract paying him $9,777,777 next year and $9,777,778 in 2016. Not a penny is guaranteed. Right now, Jackson is nowhere near a $10 million a year receiver.

Pull the trigger for a 4th rounder. That’s probably the ceiling given the cap hit.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

Sounds good to me. This season is toast anyways and how much will he help the team next season or the year after is unknown.

If they can get a 2nd rounder jump on it. Hell if they can get a 3rd rounder and a later round pick. Jump on that too. I’m game.

  3. DallasBuc Says:

No one is giving us a 2nd and regardless of how bad we are losing Jackson makes us so much worse. Remember the only other talented receiver on this roster was traded for a cigarette. I suppose anything is possible with these talent evaluators in charge but don’t expect us to come out on the winning end of the transaction.

  4. TAC Says:

Good for Jackson, and some contender if they can pull this off. Hate to see him go, but the time may be right.

  5. Scott Says:

If we could get a second round pick in this upcoming draft why not!?!? VJ probably only has a couple good years left in the tank.

  6. SteveK Says:

Get more for VHax than for Harvin, if not, no dice.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Baltimore just scored on us again.

  8. Pelbuc Says:

I really hope this happens. I like Vdrop but his best days are behind him so it’s really about getting any draft pick and unloading his big contract. This team need less big name players and more depth. Also, don’t do business with Belicheat, first he recommended Schiano and then he stuck it to us with the Mankins trade. I hope they also trade Martin, Foster, and fire Frazier. Let the rest of the year be an audition for players for 2015.

  9. Skyline Crew Says:

I don’t believe we should trade him. He is the only veteran receiver we have and is hopefully a great mentor to Evans. After the season if we can trade him sure, but I don’t think it really benefits us to get rid of him now with all the rookies we have.

  10. lightningbuc Says:

With a $10 million salary, the Bucs would be lucky to get a sack of footballs for him.

  11. Rob Says:

He’s still your best offensive weapon. Trading him for anything less than a very high pick would be a mistake.

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

Trade for a 2nd round pick? Ha! Who in the league is that desperate? Welcome to the fire sale. All that wll be left is the ashes and the burned out husk of a team. Somebody will probably clean the Bucs clock though. A clock that is all sprung out of whack.

  13. OB Says:

    Joe

This would be a good deal all around for everyone involved and we could sign the receiver that we released that went to another teams practice squad that is tall and I believe good.

  14. willie d Says:

Replace with Eric Page and watch drops stop

  15. FanOfBucs Says:

On one hand I’m open to trade

On other hand I don’t have confidence in L&L to use the compensation to get a good return with player(s).

  16. richardtyson Says:

For goodness sakes let the poor man leave. I am sure Jackson has had enough losing. Plus the state of Florida sucks anyways. Set him free!

  17. BucBob1 Says:

Off topic but worth mentioning. The Carolina Panthers seem to have caught a severe case of Buccaneer “itis”up there in Green Bay.

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

VDrops reminds me of Featherstone from “Necessary Roughness”, only slower.

And to think we traded a perfectly good receiver away because he had the nerve to get stabbed.

  19. richardtyson Says:

Unbelievable. 1 year removed from having a GM that traded away a high 1st round pick for 1 year of Revis and some of you don’t have confidence in our current front office?? You do know Mark Dominic doesn’t work for the Bucs right? Well then act like it, and show some faith!

  20. WalkdaPlank Says:

He will not fetch much on the market. I’d say keep him. The damage is done.

  21. Andres Says:

Season is not toast but his mentorship to Evans is priceless. Shop him later in the season. 8-8 can win this division. Crazier things have happened.

  22. MadMax Says:

Traded to the Browns for Johnny boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. tmaxcon Says:

Panthers are doing their best bucs impersonation

  24. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

I can see this right now.

    1. We trade Jackson
    2. Our o-line starts playing better
    3. Glennon starts declining since his favorite target is gone.
    4. The MOB starts creating excuses like last year for the transformation of “The Cannon” to the Toy Gun…

…Will Joe make excuses for Glennon since he is the imaginary “General” for the MOB or fall off the bandwagon and go back to the “Glennon is a decent backup QB” in the NFL?

  25. Harry Says:

As LeBron might say: “not a 2nd, not a 3rd, not a 4th…”. As Boldin could only garner a 6th, and locker room Ebola carrier Harvin can get, at best, a 4th and more likely a 6th, how on earth would VJax get much of anything? I like VJax, despite his drops. He brings a lot of confidence to The Cannon and is a role model for Evans (ME, don’t mimic the drops…). But if we get offered anything above a 4th rounder, JUMP on it Mr Licht!!

  26. Brent Says:

I’d keep him. He hasn’t been good this year but he’s prob one of our top 6-7 guys. He’s been top notch last 2 years and a good clubhouse guy. 9.7 mil seems reasonable. Besides, most of these free agents end up busts so that extra cap room means little. I’d like him and Evans back next year. We’re young enough. Need to keep our good vets.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

The saddest part no one is pointing out is the FACT that VJAX is the ONLY player on the roster that has any trade value.

Martin has zero value. No production going on 2 years. It’s funny in a way that nice guy martin does not have his mob of excuse makers. Maybe Licht can package Glennon and Martin for a 7th round pick and a pizza. I’d much rather have McCown has a backup / mentor to a real QB of the future.

Obviously LVD has value and GMC too but are untouchable. Out 53 players on the roster that is IT!

Too be honest I’d rather have Suh than GMC. GMC is clearly a better person but I love Suh’s intensity and passion. Suh is far more close to the player Sapp was than GMC will ever be. Sapp was no angel and had is far share of questionable (dirty plays)… Our defense is way too passive and far to many nice guys.

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

I like VJ and want him to still be on this team, but I can understand if he’s traded. Doubt we would get anything more than a 5th rounder, but if there’s a 4th or higher then pull the trigger. If not, then keep him. Remember trading him would put a lot of pressure on Mike Evans going forward, possibly even allowing teams to roll coverage to his side much like what happened when VJ was our only receiving threat. Trading him just might set Mike Evans back a little bit, so that’s something to also consider.

  29. Kingpin1 Says:

I say see ya Jackson. Way over rated and over paid.

    ________________________

My misery would like some company. That’s great.
The whole NFC South is almost irrelevant this year.

    Cam has pouty-face.

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ WaldaPlank

Are you seriously going to bring up Mike Williams? If you haven’t already realized this, the guy is not doing so hot in Buffalo. He is currently the 4th, yes I said 4th, WR on their depth chart. The guy was even a healthy inactive last game!! And now he is even demanding to be traded. Get off the “why did the bucs trade MW” topic please.

  32. Thomas Says:

Man I dont wanna trade him. He is our best offensive weapon and could be great to help the growing of Evans. He is a fan favorite and jason I think would loose a lot of fans. Unless we can get a 2nd rounder and a later round pick. This cant happen. I can still see 6-7 more wins this season. Tony dungy frist season the bucs was 0-5 why blow shit up now.

  33. Brent Says:

Think you guys are fools or stupid. Vjax is a good reciever. Other than Evans and Murphy there’s nothing. That extra money is overrated. Look at that sack of sh&t free agents we bought the last 2 years. Vjax has been good last 2 years so he has had a few bad games on a train wreck team. There’s a reason teams want him. How freakin stupid, trade him for a 4th rd pick duh hee hee! Bring in Robert Herron and Eric page ta hee hee..

  34. 911bucs Says:

Take anything you can get for him. He’s a good dude and deserves to finish his career as a winner.

  35. Luther Says:

I can’t believe people are ok with this. We need to ADD talent not get rid of it.

  36. DavidM Says:

Lets trade him for a pic and some of our coaches for a bag of chips:)

  37. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Even a 3rd Rnd pick. Great teammate and still a productive player for the Bucs, but it’s obvious this team needs draft picks to address the far bigger needs on the epic bad defense Frazier and Lovie have masterminded for 2014. Would hate to see VJax go, but at his age he deserves a shot at post season with a contender instead of probably playing meaningless games in December with the Bucs this season.

  38. 911bucs Says:

Sorry off topic but if the Bucs were even slightly less than mediocre this season they’d be right in the mix of the NFC South. On topic I bet the Saints go after VJax

  39. billy buckaroo Says:

That Lovie Smith is one lucky fella.
As bad as it has all been-
2 wins by us and 2 losses by Carolina and we are tied for first at the halfway point
    Unbelievable

  40. richardtyson Says:

Jags won. Arizona will prob keep OAK winless though. The race for the top pick is on!

  41. BFFL Says:

No need to give up on the season yet. The NFC south is terrible. Sure the Bucs suck but that is no reason for the management to give up. That would send a message of quitting.

  42. sam Says:

YES PLEASE! TRADE HIM WHILE WE CAN GET SOMETHING FOR HIM!!!

  43. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Curious as to if our coaches ever engage our players during the game. I am watching the Cowgirls game right now and they showed Ron Marinelli firing up his defense while they were sitting on the bench while Dallass was on offense. Not sure I have seen Frazier or Lovie (Howell) do this.

  44. ryan Says:

the Bucs would be very, very lucky to get a 4th rounder for Jackson. Probably a 5th is more realistic so Joe and everyone talking about a 2nd needs to wake up

  45. nate Says:

How about a 3rd round pick and a pass rusher!

  46. feelthepewterpower Says:

Wonder if the wrist is causing some of the drops?

  47. Brent Says:

You could add 3 good players on d and team would still suck cause of coaching.

  48. dabucs Says:

Nfc south standings week 10 car 3-5-1 saints 3-5 bucs 3-5 falcons 2-6.
    Yes I’m sayin there’s a chance..

  49. Zam Says:

Send him to the Patriots so we can watch him do great. He’s got a lot more left imho but he’s got a crappy offensive scheme and QB’s who wouldn’t start anywhere but on perennial losers.

Have a real QB throwing him the ball and see the difference.

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Unless someone is foolish enough to give us a 2nd rounder….keep him and fix this defense….

  51. Espo Says:

    This is depressing….

  52. mac Says:

Vjax is a decent receiver but his contract is ridiculous… He is too inconsistent and slow to be a true #1 and his hands are too questionable to be a possession reciever… He is old and often injured… If we can get anything for him great…

  53. ruggyup Says:

Any teams calling about trade availability of our HC and GM?

  54. dabucs Says:

People pepple people, look at the rest of the division sched an look at ours an tell me we can’t fight back by week 12.#keep hope alive

  55. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Yeah, let’s trade our best player on my offense. That way we can take that pick and blow it on a marginal player that won’t be on the team in 2 years anyway. Let’s just quit, because our division is so great.

  56. tmaxcon Says:

    dabucs….

I’ll borrow a line that Joe likes to use. I appreciate your passion!!!! BUT

dude have you watched the bucs play…. 2 embarrassing loses. No attitude No passion and NO QB… Please explain to me how they can compete the next 10 games much less win enough to take the division.

I wish I had your optimism.

  57. dabucs Says:

Its all between the ears, they’re gonna figure it out.

  58. tha truth is... Says:

    we need speed

  59. robert8 Says:

trade him while you can. do what billicheat would do. aka manking….OMG we did that trade.

only issue here is licht sucks and would probably take a 7th from new England lol

  60. Ed Says:

Jackson brings more positives to a team that needs leadership. He’s a good character guy that sets a good example for the younger players how to be a professional.

On the field Jackson is still one of the top 10 receivers if the plays called are to his strengths. In the 20-30 yard downfield passing game he is exceptional at getting open and downfield he’s a huge target for Glennon. That’s the part of his game that he excels at, making those difficult downfield catches. In the red zone, he’s also a money receiver.

The part of his game that hurts the Bucs is hes not explosive enough off the line of scrimmage to get open quickly. In the tight part of the field he doesn’t have the lateral movement nor the flexibility to make those catches in traffic. He can get open in the second layer of the defense but has a difficult time working tight areas and getting open. He is unreliable in the short passing game as he has trouble catching balls 7-9’yards downfield.

He’s a keeper though on a team with little weapons, trading him makes no sense unless they can get multiple draft picks. Despite his age I’d say at this point in time his production is higher that Harvin’s or Boldin’s.

  61. Aaron Says:

I can see a team like Seattle maybe over paying in a trade for him…I’m not sure I see this team being competitive in the next couple of years. We are losing with him we can lose without him.

I say trade him – we need to revamp the entire roster.

  62. Tim Says:

Send vjax, mcclown, and our third round pick to the browns for Manziel.

  63. Mort Says:

Hey, great idea. Let’s trade away our best WR in order to get better… That’s winning football right there.

  64. DrT Says:

Funny thing I was thinking of trading Jackson earlier today.
But I was thinking of trading him for a player.
Joe, whom would you try to trade for – a CB perhaps?

  65. MTM Says:

Trade Jackson for what ? Trade an A player for a C player next year. Evans is not a threat with V-Jax gone.

  66. PRBucFan Says:

You didn’t just say Boldin is better the VJ?

    lol Your slipping man…your slipping

  67. Buc1987 Says:

@Aaron…I do like your point the best though on this whole thread. We are losing with him and we can lose without him. What’s the difference at this point?

If some team wants to over compensate us for an aging VJax and his 5 million dollar per season. I’d pop that trade off. It really doesn’t matter how good our offense is with him, if our defense sucks ass.

  68. Capt.Tim Says:

Football is very simple. Although the it’s a team sport- it really is a collection of individual battles. Can your guy beat the guy across from him?
If that answer is no in most cases, you are the Bucs
If that answer is mostly Yes- then you are a winning team!
    Vincent Jackson is a YES
On Offense, he may be the only one- although we have some good young guys( finally)
I don’t have to pay any of that 10 million. Don’t care.
We are paying millions to most of these guys- who don’t deserve 10 dollars!!!
Why bitch about the one guy who performs- even with a broken wrist!!!!!!
Think that may be causing a lil trouble catching the ball ,there Joe
Most players with a broken wrist are out for the year! Jackson is playing!
    That’s priceless.

I hope everyone celebrating cutting Revis last year, pukes in their mouth watching our lousy secondary. I said it then- you add to Revis, and make a great secondary. Imagine Verner and Revis!
And we STILL have the money he wanted. Again- money I don’t have to pay.
I’d rather it go to a game changing CB, than lay around- or worse, go to Oniel Cousins!!!

You try to get players that are better than their opposition. Guys that will sacrifice to help you win.
    That’s Jackson.
Trading him will do to the Recivers, what losing Revis did to the seconday.
Took a strength, and made it a joke.
    Right, Flacco?

  69. Buc1987 Says:

We’re a joke now with Jackson. We’ll be a joke without him too. Build around Jackson? What is he some rookie or something? He’s on the tail end of his career.
How do you build around a player that won’t be here in 2 years?

  70. Buc1987 Says:

The point is the guy will be gone in 2 years and we’ll probably still suck when he leaves. I hope we don’t suck in 2 years, but either way he’ll be gone anyways.

It will make things 10 times harder on Evans though and that part I don’t like at all. So I’d have to say keep him him then, if it helps ease Evans into the NFL so he’s not the number 1 target.

  71. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Capt. Tim,

I won’t say this often, but that was an absolutely perfect post (probably because I agree with you 100%). Only a moron would want to get rid of Jackson for a pick with this franchise’s history of drafting. We’ve been “revamping” the roster for 6 years now. How is that working out for us?

  72. Hawaiian Buc Says:

So because he won’t be on the team in 2 years, we should get rid of him now? Don’t follow that logic at all. I don’t give 2 sh!ts about 2 years from now. I don’t even care about next year. How about winning some games this year so I can go back to enjoying football Sundays? All this planning for the future is nonsense. Field the best team you can in the present. The future will work itself out.

  73. Buc1987 Says:

Ha ha ha Hawaiian Buc…now back to reality…

  74. THETRUTH Says:

stupid to trade, so we can need to pick a WR again next year to replace him and hope a rookie pans out. you replace players in positions of need. OL/CB/DE

IF we were a top team that can afford to let the best players we have at positions go that would be different.

  75. Braniac 5 Says:

Boldin was traded for a 6th that’s true- however it was universally panned as the Ravens giving him up for free to the other Harbaugh brother.

Is Jackson worth more than that? Y es. And he will be traded soon for more than that uless there’s a Smith brother we don’t know about that is a head coach in the NFL.

Personally, we need more than a 2 in terms of numbers of draft picks. If we get a 3 and a 4 I would be happy. Or a 3 and a Offensive lineman.

  76. Buc1987 Says:

I want him to stay for the benefit of Mike Evans. He’ll make Evans a better WR in the long run. So that’s my new stance on all this keep him or trade him crap.

  77. BucIt941 Says:

a 3rd round or better would be fine with me. Another solid group of draftee’s are coming out this year. We need to stock pile what we can, to have the ammunition to do what ever is needed to get this team right by 2015. Put doug Martin and Mark Barron on the block while you’re at it.

  78. Patrick Says:

    The Buccaneers philosophy:

Unload your only good players for a draft picks that will be wasted anyway.

Is it any wonder why we don’t win?

  79. bee Says:

We should trade him. This team needs picks. Plus the gave up next year’s 4th rounder for Mankins…smh… this teams needs as many high draft picks as it can get and fast. The talent needs to be upgraded!

  80. bee Says:

And why are so many people worried about the Bucs history with drafting. The people in charge of those bad drafts are history! Let the new GM and coach build the team…hopefully they’ll be smart enough to get Mariota in the draft

  81. BucIt941 Says:

Hey I know. We can trade him to Ne for that 4th rounder back that we gave up for Mankins. That way Ne can have 2 of our best receiving targets and we got a old sluggish guard 🙂

  82. Mike10 Says:

Look if Mankins costed us a 4th + a player, and Zuttah got us a 6th, and an injured Revis cost us a 1st..

Get the better end of a deal for once, you want him – you’re going to have to pay premium! Because it’ll be a team going all in on this season and is going to have to be made to be desperate!

    1st rd only!

If it’s a team in contention the pick will be late anyways.

Who cares if he costs $10 mil, we don’t suck because of the payroll and he is definitely one of our best players, especially on offense.

  83. Capt.Tim Says:

    Buc1987
You were one of the guys celebrating Revis leaving.
    Who’s side are you on?
Obviously, you don’t learn from your mistakes.
Having a bunch of roster fodder, and a fist full of draft picks- that’s the way to be 4-12 for 20 years.
We did that. For 20 years
Great players won’t come, if all you are doing is looking to trade them off.

    Only an idiot would.

And the way we draft? Lol
We end up having to cut our draft picks, and try to replace them with Free agents.

That you recommend trading for Draft picks!! Lol
Arrelious Benn? Michael Clayton? Mike Williams?
We couldn’t draft a WR, with 32 first round picks
    Present class excluded

  84. Patrick Says:

Yeah……like this team has a history of good drafting! You really think we’ll hit gold with that treasured 4th rounder? Lol.
