No. 55 Wants More “Manuevering” From Glennon
October 9th, 2014Passionate as ever for his beloved Buccaneers, Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks delivered plenty of passionate Mike Glennon talk with Steve Duemig on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.
The Mike Glennon Mob will want to take note.
First, Brooks praised the big-arm capability of Glennon and implored the Bucs to get their running game fixed, a key to giving Glennon more opportunities to execute explosive plays in the passing game — “that will allow him to show the strength of the big arm, which he’s shown at times he can deliver the ball downfield.”
But Brooks also wants significant improvement from Glennon.
“Some of his limited mobility cost us,” Brooks said, “where you [see] other quarterbacks maneuvering within the pocket. I’m not saying be elusive as a Russell Wilson, but be elusive enough in the pocket where you can help your linemen out and not give up a sack or may get a two or three yard game, which we saw Tom Brady do this week.”
“The more snaps he gets, lets just say this, I hope one area of improvement for Mike Glennon would be his ability to maneuver within the pocket, whether scrambling downfield or buying extra time to deliver a throw that may not have been there the first time through a read in the passing game.”
Regarding the Brady reference, Brooks was talking about how Brady adjusted during the Patriots’ pounding of the Bengals last weekend to rush for 13 yards on four carries. In Glennon’s two starts, he has one carry for zero yards.
“I’m saying the same [Brady] abilities are there for Mike Glennon at times to help out his offensive line,” Brooks said.
Yes, everyone is watching the maturation of Glennon. He’s 11 more games to progress and get the regime — and Bucs icons — to go all-in with him.

The Aints have a weak defense. If Glennon has a decent outing against the Ravens, I will be closer to being a believer.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Funny, Brooks tells us that Lovie’s Defense “takes time”, yet he wants more out of a QB in his 14th start. Brooks is Lovie’s biggest shill.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
Hey Derrick, you should focus on Lovie’s dog crap defense and lay off of Glennon. He’s the least of our problems.
October 9th, 2014 at 1:57 pm
mad love for brooks, but he’s out of line on this one.
thats like telling jimmy johnson I love the way you drive, I just wish you would weave in and out of traffic better.
lobama smith must have put him up to this. 🙂
October 9th, 2014 at 2:02 pm
He was pointing out an area that could use improvement. Wasn’t saying that he was a garbage QB because of it. Put the spikes away fellas.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:08 pm
Brooks is right.
We asked the same of Glennon last season when he was doing his backpedal into big loss sacks.
I saw a major improvement from that in his recent two games. Speaking of Brady, Glennon has started to get that shoulder dip / side step working for him and that has allowed for big time throws and moving the chains.
He has work to do, yes. But he is currently on course to continue to help this team be in a position in which it has a chance to come out with the victory.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
I would the use the element of surprise. Not one defender is expecting Mike to pull it down and run with it. So pull it down, run with it once and while.
No one is expecting it Mike. I think you’ll gain some yards no matter how slow you are.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
Brooks was merely commenting on areas where the QB can improve.
He’s not the type to trash anyone so no need to make an issue of it.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
Brooks is not Shaun King everyone. I saw no disdain in his comments.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:21 pm
If our WR corps didn’t have all the drops they had (yeah you ASJ) and we had put a few more points on the board we wouldn’t even be listening to this. Tell the great 55 to be more critical of what was supposed to be our strength- THE DEFENSE! How come Arroyo stands up beore the media–where is Leslie Frasier?
October 9th, 2014 at 2:22 pm
well brooks could have learned how to run in his final years. he looked like a lumbering lineman for sometime and should have been put out to pasture earlier.
not saying anything bad about his previous play, just pointing out where he could have improved.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Joe,.. just got sore unwanted pop ups from your site….
October 9th, 2014 at 2:26 pm
Robert 9,
C’mon man!
Mr. Derrick Brooks is the man, a true HOFer.
Glennon is getting better.
As to Brooks’ comments, look who he was speaking with on the topic on the radio. The radio host does not believe Glennon has what it takes, and it is all relative.
I am so glad Saint Schiano drafted Glennon and snuffed out Freeman’s bogus act! Go Bucs!
Could you all imagine if we paid Freeman $100 million? It would really be worse than a JaMarcus Russell fallout.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
@Joe Unrelated but I Just checked my tv guide and found out they are not showing the ravens bucs game where I’m at in Virginia smdh. I wonder what’s different about this week because they show 16 ravens games a year smdh on sundays unless theyre playing in primetime. Do you think that the thursday night shilacking we took has something to do with Cbs not showing it in my region?
October 9th, 2014 at 2:32 pm
iamkingsu:
Joe will have his TV map Saturday that has all the areas that will broadcast the game. Do know that TV guides are often inaccurate and are not official.
October 9th, 2014 at 2:50 pm
Hey Derrick, call out that weak ass defense Lovie is running first eh? Offense is the least of the Bucs concerns.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:02 pm
No. Espo wants Glennon not to have to.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:10 pm
@Joe I appreciate it. I saw this coming down the pipes anyway after that thursday night game just by the way Nance and Sims were calling the end of our game like the true professionals they are(sarcasm). I thought it was supposed to be REGIONAL action and I’m pretty familiar with what the word region means. I’ll just start an uproar with Ravens fans in case we are not showed in the Ravens region
October 9th, 2014 at 3:18 pm
robert9…STOP being so sensitive when it comes to your boy, man.
It’s like blasphemy to say(or type) a bad work about Brooks. Makes me cringe so just stop it.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:20 pm
robert9….Also Brooks mentioned him in the same breath as Brady.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:28 pm
wow, you’d think derrick brooks called for glennon to get cut. it sounds like derrick was asked about areas for improvement and gave a direct answer. there’s no winning with bucs fans. if a former buc praises a guy or expresses belief, some fans want to bury him. if said former buc suggests an area for improvement, some fans want to take away his buccaneer card.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:49 pm
buc1987. Because it is! You are right, he kind of gave a Brady comparison. I don’t think he said anything bad or untrue. Not sure why people are sensitive to glennon. I like the kid, and I wish he started over McCown, but is not not perfect.
October 9th, 2014 at 3:57 pm
How many bootlegs has Glennon run this year?? He has the vision & the arm-strength to excel at them, maybe with–horrors!!– a throwback mixed in on occasion….Maybe the run game hasn’t been strong enough; there haven’t been a ton of play-pass throws either IIRC.
Please correct me if I am wrong; we don’t get every game up here.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:02 pm
@Mike J…Play action pass has been virtually non-existent. I don’t even remember seeing one this season. They could have done it. I just don’t remember it.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:03 pm
Again, I’m not a member of this Mike Glennon Mob. But what game was Brooks watching last Sunday??
Glennon did an excellent job of climbing the pocket to avoid some rushes and also made a few throws after he bought himself time. The TD throw to Murphy as one example. He was sacked once in a blindside hit after a botched protection on the left side of the OL. Not sure what else Brooks wants. Glennon was one of the Bucs best players Sunday and that’s what you need out of your QB.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:06 pm
Brooks could have improved in his last home game against the Raiders where it shows him getting run through by Michael Bush and chasing him down the field for like a 60yd TD. This guy is just like JOE. He will talk a bunch of $hit about Vjax dropping balls but nothing about his Man Crush ASJ. Brooks talks about others doing wrong but doesnt talk about Lovies’ bull$hit defense or HB dives up the gut. If Brooks wants to be honest then be honest about everyone. He was quick to single out Schiano though.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:19 pm
I totally agree, for once the QB position is the least of our problems. Hopefully brooks can put his 2 cents worth on this pathetic defense.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:21 pm
I don’t think DB was critical of Glennon, just stating an opinion.
Does Glennon want to be a great QB in the NFL? If so, maybe Glennon should study, and understand that opinion.
I would say more than likely Glennon is smart enough to understand what he said, and meant.
Brooks already said months ago to temper expectations on the scheme, and the players adjustment to the scheme, and good lord almighty was he ever right about that.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:35 pm
Buc1987, thanks for the response. That was my thinking too (no play-action), but I assumed I was wrong.”You just missed them,” I told myself.
October 9th, 2014 at 4:51 pm
Anytime DB is with the “little chihuahua” he doesn’t want to anger him. The “little chihuahua” does not like MG8 because he says he isn’t any good. And when he says it, er uh barks it, it’s true! DB doesn’t want his ankle bitten. Lol!
October 9th, 2014 at 5:00 pm
Did I even watch the game on Sunday? MG was dancing like Michael Jackson in the pocket. I’m not sure what I’m talking about. Btw robert9, low blow brother low blow.
October 9th, 2014 at 5:07 pm
Sounds to me like Brooks was trying to appease Mr. Big Dog, seeing as he has a weekly show there. I think his comments about Glennon are nitpicking, obviously.
October 9th, 2014 at 5:26 pm
I like how Glennon moves around in the pocket. If the damn play calling wasn’t so predictable that the entire offense would be looking fantastic. Like Joes article said earlier….bucs are averaging 1.9 yards per carry on first downs. 50 of those first down runs have been for little or no gain. I think that sums up the problem right there!!!!! I guarantee if you start throwing the ball on forty-fifty percent of our first downs then our yards per carry on first down will go up because ….THEY AREN”T READY FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COMMON sense but I guess an entire staff full of professional football coached in the NFL can’t figure that out through an entire offseason and 4 and 1/2 weeks of embarrassing football. Glennon has been the brightest spot on the team since taking over. But when every single second down is second and nine and every single defender is sitting back there knowing what is about to happen than glen non is being set up for failure
October 9th, 2014 at 5:46 pm
Sounds like #55 wants Glennon to gain more yardage running. i think Glennon is fine, he is not taking unnecessary sacks by staying in the pocket. He is shifty, he glides, and the dude is becoming very aware of his surroundings.
October 9th, 2014 at 6:17 pm
Wow the amount of disrespect being shown to Derrick Brooks on some of these comments are hysterical. I find the MGM to be ridiculous right now Brooks is a freaking Hall of Famer, first ballot at that, and he doesn’t have the right to provide constructive criticism about a mediocre quarterback. If Glennon’s career is even half as successful as Brooks’ I would be very surprised. Glennon doesn’t suck, as some would have you believe, but Brooks compared him to a future HOF’er in Brady quite a compliment in my book.
October 9th, 2014 at 6:28 pm
Weird. Guys like Becht and Dave Moore are saying glennons footwork and ability to move within the pocket have been impressive. I think brooks is slipping when it comes to observing his bucs. Too busy now?
October 9th, 2014 at 11:50 pm
Didn’t Glennon have a nice twenty yard run this year?
October 10th, 2014 at 3:53 am
Brooks placates his friend on his radio show. You never hear him disagree with his host. Wish he had as much manhood on the radio as he had on the field.
October 10th, 2014 at 9:17 am
Hahahaha here we go again, the all knowing joebucsfan.com message board experts who never cease to amaze me. Now you all are going after a superbowl winning, so many pro bowls you can’t count, hall of famer…my my. Glennon is doing an amazing job, however that doesn’t mean he’s above criticism.
October 10th, 2014 at 10:24 am
Well said Crimson_Warrior!
They should take a brake with their beers……lol
October 10th, 2014 at 10:36 am
I agree Crimson, I really try not to read the comments cause of Trolls like LightningBuc. I think they come on just to say nasty negative things, it is all they have. Misery likes company and there are some very miserable people that post here!
I am optimistic and think the Bucs will get it turned around. I realize there is less patience now in the NFL, but I am OK with our team and I know Lovie can fix it, Go Bucs!!!
October 10th, 2014 at 1:57 pm
Well Mr Brooks I have to disagree with you. I will also say for the ones here that say Brooks is a HOF’er and all that, yes he is, on defense, DEFENSE. Hardly a QB expert or a QB coach. He has his opinion as we all do but take a look a t Glennon’s numbers (they are on the Buc’s home page) compared to other QB’s. He stacks up quite well. If he played on a different team he would probably be pro bowl material. You know, a team with a running game and one that can pass protect. To do what he has done with the cast he has around him is remarkable, in my humble opinion. Just my .02, yours may vary depending on the exchange rate.
October 10th, 2014 at 2:03 pm
Oh, and let me address the “Mike Glennon Mob” reference. That’s pathetic, a not subtle way of denigrating those that support Glennon and justifying the dismissal of their support as irrelevant. Simply pathetic. What’s more accurate would be to label yourselves as “The Anti Glennon Mob” as regardless of what he does on the field or how well he plays you ignore all of that and focus strictly on any perceived (whether accurate or not) failures or weaknesses.
Yep, You are a charter member of the “Anti Glennon Mob”, pathetic.
