Glennon Talks About His Matt Ryan Comparison
October 7th, 2014With 6-foot-6 Joe Flacco coming to Tampa on Sunday, inevitably there will be talk of how 6-foot-7 Mike Glennon could be the next Flacco.
Glennon, however, seems more focused on another quarterback.
Speaking last week on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Glennon talked about how Matt Ryan is a guy he’s been studying for nearly eight years.
“The person I’ve probably been most compared to because of stature, the way we throw the football, is Matt Ryan,” Glennon said. “I’ve heard those comparisons since I was in high school. When I went to N.C. State, my head coach and offensive coordinator were [Ryan’s] coaches at Boston College. So I’ve been watching Matt Ryan film since I was 17 years old, taking back to the time he was at Boston College.”
Yes, Lovie Smith and a growing-long list of ex-Buccaneers say Glennon has played very well in his two starts this season. And Glennon is 5-5 over his last 10 starts. But Joe’s not about to start comparing Glennon to anyone at this point.
As for those college coaches Glennon referenced, one was Dana Bible, the guy who helped nearly make Glennon the backup to Drew Brees.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:30 am
Why compare him? What’s wrong with growing his own identity and one day comparing others to Glennon?
October 7th, 2014 at 8:31 am
Actually, what we ALL know is that Mike Glennon IS the next Mike Glennon.
Period.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:37 am
Mike Glennon is not the next Mike Glennon, he’s the current Mike Glennon.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:46 am
Mikey Cannon. He will have his own identity soon enough.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:48 am
I just took a look at our schedule going forward. It seems crazy to say it at this point but I really only see 2 games that we’re going to go in to without a real chance at winning. Cincinnati and Green Bay are probably going to be tough weeks to watch but every other week should be a winnable game if we continue to improve, get our guys healthy and clean up all of those turnovers. The D is only going to get more comfortable in the scheme and hopefully our receivers can catch the balls thrown to them so that our pass game can open up our run game a little bit. I’m encouraged by what I saw last week
October 7th, 2014 at 8:49 am
Glennon is the QB of the present and the future, until he is not. Give MG, the coaching and the team time to build a winner. The fans have waited this long and are familiar with waiting for a winning competitive team.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:58 am
I still feel Lovie is a moron, but I am seeing improvement each week. Glennon is looking more and more like a real NFL QB, coach him up, what is really good is the rapport he is building with Arroyo, which will be a great thing for when Tedford returns, if he ever does return, if not, it’s still a great thing as it looks like Arroyo will be the OC by default. Getting Simms on the field will be great for his development, won’t help a great deal this season, but like getting your backup qb real game reps, same thing for RBs, getting game reps this season will enhance his readiness for next season as he’ll know what to expect as far as game speed goes.
October 7th, 2014 at 8:59 am
Dana Bible and Tom O’Brien I’ve said this many times here, he’s been coached up exactly like Matt Ryan. The kid needs to be recognized and show his talent he’s been hamstrung from the get go in the NFL so far. I’m a NC State fan and watched Rivers, Wilson and Glennon develope. Wisconsin going to get the credit for Wilson I’m sure, but he was really groomed by Bible and O’Brien. O’Brien recruited Glennon and at that time, Glennon was the number 3 rated high school QB in the country. We got us a real QB folks let him loose and and this kid can shine he’s a winner always has been… and needs to be now and in the future!
October 7th, 2014 at 9:07 am
I counted 22 other QB’s I’d rather start than Glennon, even not including rookies I’d rather have.
That’s not terrible, but pretty far from franchise QB of the future etc.
Glennon needs to just keep his mouth shut comparing himself to Matt Ryan. Nobody’s mistaking you for him buddy.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:10 am
I’ve said his ceiling is probably close to Ryan’s. But Glennon’s arm talent has to be slightly better overall. Glennon takes care of the football pretty well for a second year QB.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:12 am
@zam…. comparing his coaching tree to Ryans…. smh
October 7th, 2014 at 9:18 am
I’ve never been a Mike Glennon mob member…. But I will say that he has shown growth just in the two games I’ve seen. It seems that they have finally taken the training wheels off and let him throw it down field. The one thing that I can’t seem to understand is that I can admit when I’m wrong, (although much needs to be proven in the next 10 games for me to sign off), BUT the big dog on DAE will adamantly deny that he’s the QB of the future like he’s got something riding on it or something. I’m not saying Glennon is or will be our QB moving forward, BUT does anyone else see the bias out of Dumeig? He even takes offense when you call him out on it! It was the same when Freeman was let go….. How has he made it this long in this market being a complete dickhead to whoever is giving him the interviews. He is so two faced that I just can’t listen to the station past 3 O’clock. Then he wonders why no one calls his show…. People don’t like a Bully know-at-all jackoff…. It’s time DAE look for a better afternoon personality. Me personally wouldn’t mind tkraz getting that spot. I know I can’t be alone.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:19 am
mike glennon’s best play is the play action pass. that one play always sets up for a long completion for him. that worked for him last year and this year.. tom brady has made a career doing the play action pass. I loved the way mike glennon would feel the pressure and slide around in the pocket.
the whole time he kept his eyes downfield. he should be named the starter!!! mc clown would break his focus downfield and look at the defensive linemen. mike glennon always stays calm and focused.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:29 am
I would like to see how well Glennon could do if the other teams had to RESPECT the play action or running game or a possible audible by Glennon at the line which right now they dont have to.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:38 am
@MaHaBoNe.D – It’s been well documented. That’s just what it is. There’s a much better product over on the FM dial. Unfortunately, they’re still working to get the player and team relationships in place, since they’re much newer, so they don’t have as many in-roads but the product is so much more entertaining. And they actually like the teams.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:40 am
I can see a bit of Ryan in Mikey Cannon, but I think it’s very unfair to try to define him so early in his career. Ryan is a great QB and “The Cannon” is still basically a rookie (still less than 16 starts in his career). Give him a couple of years to mature and improve and maybe he will surprise us and be even better than some of his contemporaries!
FireTheCannon!
October 7th, 2014 at 9:42 am
@Zam…he’s been compared to Matt Ryan and Flacco more than a few times by “experts” prior to the NFL draft. I don’t think he needs to keep his mouth shut if he’s being interviewed about such things.
Instead of only saying he needs to keep his mouth shut. Why don’t you just come out and say it? I hate Mike Glennon AND he needs to keep his mouth shut.

Lovie is no moron. That’s a bit harsh.
He’s a stalwart.
What you are seeing individual is players improve.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:49 am
until his supporting cast. linemen and WR’s stop dropping balls and coaches get the calls in quicker and running on 1st every play, basically giving him only 2 downs with no audibles because of clock time….
we won’t know what his ceiling is.
right now he’s a friggin rock star considering the hand he has been dealt last year and this year.
those who think otherwise, well you just don’t know a true pimp when ya see one
October 7th, 2014 at 9:50 am
I can see it. Another Matt Ryan comparison – being forced to make lemonade out of a dogsh*t roster.
October 7th, 2014 at 9:50 am
Ma Ha –
Duemig wanted to fire Maddon for years. Don’t know why anyone pays him any mind.
October 7th, 2014 at 10:00 am
You people bashing the team must have forgotten that this team hasn’t even been competitive on the field in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Now, we win 1 close game, and lose 3 others in the last minute, and suddenly Lovie Smith is basically being called Coach Raheem Schiano. Five weeks, that’s how long it usually takes for teams to acclimate themselves to the philosophy and systems of a new coach. We’ve had five weeks and I fully expect this team to keep improving. You bandwagon fans bashing the team have every right to jump off, but when things start turning around and this team starts looking good, think back to week 5 when you thought YOU had all the answers and everybody running the Bucs was a moron.
October 7th, 2014 at 10:01 am
All I want is for Glennon to get a true shot at having this team to himself. Play the offense to his strengths, create a game plan and put the trust of the team in his hands. He has shown he has the IQ and is capable of making good decisions. He takes care of the ball at an above average level, even for an NFL QB. This kid deserves every shot the team can give him.
Tampa may be looking a 5-11 or 6-10 season in the face, but there is no reason this team can’t be above average with some stability and familiarization with the new coaching staff and schemes. Stand behind your team, and let them develop a team we can be proud of. It’s not that far away. Stop nit picking everything, my fellow Bucs fans. Throw your support at the team, and watch them develop into a winner. The time to stand behind our boys is NOW!
October 7th, 2014 at 10:05 am
i’m not bashing lovie for his ability to get the team to come together.
i’m bashing his personel decisions, his horrid porous defense, his horrible clock and game management.
he’s chocked on clock management several times. and who the hell doesn’t call some timeouts last week when the D was realing and brees was on fire. call a TO, regroup and hold them.

So Lovie gets a flyer for the sloppy, undisciplined play?
October 7th, 2014 at 10:09 am
@buckin’ round – It’s a different fan these days man. it’s not about the team anymore. it’s about people’s opinions being right. the fans get in their trenches on particular players or coaches and just shout each other out until the player is off the team (unless he’s a QB) or until he reaches his potential and then the fans move on to another player to bash while the supporters of that player bask in the glory of being right about him. the team as a whole is an afterthought
October 7th, 2014 at 10:11 am
This is going to be good. Please let us all know what your list is at QB position Zam. What 22 QBs would you start before Glennon?
October 7th, 2014 at 10:15 am
The Bucs were uncompetitive last year? They lost 3 of their first 4 games by 6 points combined, and that was with Freeman doing everything he could to sabotage the season. So either the Bucs are as uncompetitive or worse this year, or perhaps stop the hyperbole?
Oh fun fact? Mike Glennon is still the only QB since 2011 with a 2TD 0INT or better game in Seattle. He doesn’t get rattled like Freeman’s textbook deer in the headlights look.

Patrick –
Couldnt agree more. The fans on here just make predictions on who will fall and who will rise. Then they sit back and wait to say “I told you so”. Its getting old in a hurry. Ive pulled a complete 180 on Glennon and HE is starting to make me believe. But a large number of these MGMers are really ruining it for the rest of us.
Im sure Glennon appreciates the undying support guys, but guess what? Circumstances and his hard work has put him in the position he is in right now, not a mob of people wishing him success.
October 7th, 2014 at 10:28 am

Zam,
Please name the 22 QBs you’d rather start/have on your team then Glennon?
I am excited for this list. 🙂
October 7th, 2014 at 11:07 am
I will give credit when credit is do. Everytime we see a shot of McCown, he seems to be right there for Mike. Good or bad. If if it was a 4 and out or a bad pass HE is coaching him up. So if he was brought in here to be a mentor he seems to still be doing that.
October 7th, 2014 at 11:16 am
McCown won the lottery so of course he’s psyched either way. Remember he was out of football 2 years ago. So $10 million to start or backup, he’s winning either way. Good for him, seems like a great guy. Not a starter though.
October 7th, 2014 at 11:23 am
We’re all massively overreacting. He’s played above average and that’s it. Glennon leading us to probably 5 wins max will just result in another average year next year and the years after that. It hurts losing, but when it comes to the QB position, then I’d rather us lose this year and draft Mariota. That doesn’t make me any less of a fan, if it was a need at any other position I wouldn’t be thinking that way
October 7th, 2014 at 11:45 am
So I guess we aren’t going to see this list of QBs? 22 of em’?
October 7th, 2014 at 12:13 pm
I am aniously awaiting the list.
Glennon is winnin’ over the fans, hopefully we beat the Ravens on Sunday.
October 7th, 2014 at 12:16 pm
@Patrick, couldn’t agree with you more. If you’re a fan support the team through good and bad. You and I may not agree with everything the organization does, the coaching staff does, or the players do, But dammit this is your team. Stand behind it. If you’re not a true fan get the hell off the train, and leave it to the true fans!
October 7th, 2014 at 1:43 pm
Shipwrecked,
Mariota is not better than Mike Glennon.
Wait and see, we need: DE, Safeties, MLB and O-Line much more than we need a QB.
We suck because Dom used to draft for need, and not BPA.
BPA or die in the draft, simple as that.
October 7th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Stevek,
You can’t say WE NEED: DE, Safeties, MLB, and O-Line….then turn around say we suck because we draft on need and not BPA.
What if BPA is not those needs? What do we do?
I think we draft O-line and D-line next year honestly and maybe a QB in the 3rd or 4th rd as a back up.
October 7th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
Skyline Crew,
We need a DE, two safeties, a MLB and O-Line.
We must draft BPA.
Let’s just hope something matches up.
Marcus Mariota is not the answer.
October 7th, 2014 at 2:48 pm
stevek…I have a STRONG feeling the Bucs won’t be drafting high enough for Mariota anyways. No worries pal, Glennon is here to stay, you’ll see.
October 7th, 2014 at 2:54 pm
I hear ya stevek. I don’t think we should draft a QB until the 3rd or 4th rd unless Glennon implodes on us this year. If continues at what he has done then we need to beef up the O-Line and D-Line.
October 7th, 2014 at 4:17 pm
Agree BPA is the way, and probably DE, CB etc is needed slightly more than a new QB but the investments made in those defensive spots already could suggest we go another way.Really want to be sold on Glennon, but I would definitely take Mariota or Hundley. If we draft low enough to get them then it will mean Glennon didn’t get the job done. If he can lead us to 6,7 wins+ then he would have helped us out of a hole. I dont like the sound of the other QBs so go D-line and O-line to help the guy out, the weapons are there already.
October 7th, 2014 at 5:02 pm
A “SEASON” is not lost after 3 games and if Glennon plays the rest of this season and its a loosing season then he is gone. The Bucs will need to win this division if Glennon is to remain the starter for that franchise. There is no way that Glennon remains the starter next season if he only improves by 10% from now, LOL. You Glennon fans better hope that the D and special teams play like they did in the Atlanta game all season. Because if they play like they did the other 3 games and get better and still loose then its over for Glennon. Somebody’s gonna take the fall and it won’t be the coaches/GM/rookies/oline/stars of the defense and that leaves only one guy, Glennon. Again, there’s an argument if the team plays like spit the rest of the season but if they improve and Glennon is not able to do enough to get the team over the hump then he’s gone. Believe That!
October 7th, 2014 at 5:03 pm
Are you Glennon fans gonna give Lovie Smith 3yrs to prove himself or is it just Glennon you want to do well?
October 7th, 2014 at 7:23 pm
Newbucsfan!!!…answer : Both
Guess what? Your wrong. Glennon does not have to have a wining season at all.
You really made no case at all for his departure, just stating what you think.
Tell you what there’s a thing I used to do on here that pissed people off. I’m going to do it for you. I’ll copy and paste your entire post, save it in a file, then show you just how wrong you are at the end of the season. Your post is perfect candidate for it. I never read anything so ridiculous on JBF or anywhere for that matter when it comes to this team. Your post gets a gold star.
Glennon didn’t give up 37 points to the Saints…Lovie’s D did. Glennon kept them in the friggin game. I don’t know what you were watching. I’m sure Lovie can distinguish who’s the biggest problem on the team and it’s not Lovie’s chosen back-up QB Mike Glennon. Far from it.
October 7th, 2014 at 11:43 pm
Need the running game bad…..Cant wait for our OLs to play as one unit. MG8 will shine even more. Our defense need to step up….U cant let a no name RB or No name QBs made a fool out of you.
October 7th, 2014 at 11:49 pm
I bet we get a first round pick for MG8. at least 10- 15 teams will call to offer
the pick. Wake up Lovie. Future is here.
