Johnthan Banks “Falling?”

Joe isn’t sure why, but it sure seemed as if Lovie Smith was doing his best to replace cornerback Johnthan Banks. Shoot, Lovie even went out and signed the notorious Mike Jenkins, and despite Jenkins missing virtually all of training camp and preseason, Lovie insisted Jenkins was a starter.
Joe watched closely and just shook his head. Mike Jenkins!
Jenkins got hurt opening day. Yesterday, Banks had a hit and miss day. Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com believes it was more miss than hit.
FALLING
Cornerback Johnthan Banks. He had his first interception of the season against the Saints. But Banks also committed a hands-to-the-face penalty in overtime that kept New Orleans’ game-winning drive alive.
Look, Banks will be just fine. He’s a good player, and young player and a talented player. He made a mistake, yes. It wasn’t like he lost the game for the Bucs. You should have seen how upset Banks was in the locker room after the game. He knows he goofed up.
There is a lot of blame that can be tossed around. Singling out Banks, who otherwise did not play that badly, is a bit of a reach.

Agreed. And if the coaches are trying to phase him out, then he needs to pull a Mike Glennon and step up to the challenge of someone else trying to take his job (Josh McCown).

Penalties, dropped passes, no pressure on the QB, and being completely predictable on first down is what lost the game.

I am a Banks supporter…..that hands to the face was BS….it was typical WR/DB hand fighting getting of the loine of scrimage…the hand to the face was was exetremly fast and was more like a very fast swipe as a result of hand being redirected by the WR…..that and it had NO impact on the play…

Can also blame the refs for no intentional grounding, no holding calls against the saints and such

The hands to the face call was awful. He barely swiped the helmet. It’s definitely not the spirit of the rule, which is to protect against concussions. In fact, it seemed more like the receivers helmet created the contact, not Banks. Just a really bad call. But, we needed to close them out so that bad calls wouldn’t lose the game for us.

I’m not blaming anyone anymore. This team is decimated with injuries and walking wounded by they are finding ways to keep it close. This team is on the rise, but it will take time and a little more talent but they can sure as heck hold their heads high… they are getting better very fast.

This team has the opportunity to prove that they are worse than last year’s team and are giving it there best effort. The Bucs are losers yet again. 1 and 4 says it all. Have a great time at the Moral Victory Bowl all you rose colored glasses wearers and glass half fullers, because that is the only playoff we will participate in this year. They suck. When they put the score in the record book, they don’t put an asterisk that says the Bucs got jobbed on penalties, or they would have won without the dropped passes, or Lovie Smith had a bad case of hemorrhoids so he couldn’t concentrate. It just says L.

18 penalties, worst in almost a decade. Not your fault lovely. The star FA DE played 82 snap and got 0 tackles, not your fault lovely. Zero sacks by the dline with the best 3tech in the league, again not your fault. Obviously if banks would have let the rcv get a free release like you taught him then we would have won the game.
He was jamming the rcv, obviously not something lovely teach his guys to do as all rcv get a free release against lovely’s bucs. But banks tried to jam the rcv and got his elbow hit causing his hand to touch the face mask. Ticky tack foul but whatever.
Can’t wait for the offseason to unload all these scrubs schiano put on this team. They are obviously holding lovely back. I say get rid of them all!!
We would be in so much better shape with mccown. Simms. Jenkins and the rest of the lovely crew.

This avalanche of flags — around the league, not just for the Bucs — has got to stop. The Banks penalty was extremely ticky-tacky, as were some other personal fouls. I am all for player safety but this is a very unsafe sport.

Banks was up and down yesterday, but he’s a 2nd year player in his first year in this system. He’s going have growing pains. He will be fine.
The hands to the face penalty was a killer though. By the letter of the law it was the correct call, unfortunately.
In a perfect world, the referees would pick up the flag and not call it since it did not affect the outcome of the play, but we know that would never happen.

The problem with mistakes on the defense or offense. Its all about the timing. When there are made in the last few minutes that’s all anybody can remember. There was plenty of blame to go around yesterday. This play reminds me a it of David’s hit against the Jets last year that cost them the game.

Banks is the last of our worries. He will figure out the scheme and his land marks. Overall our BUCS today aren’t good enough to overcome penalties such as yesterdays. Good winning teams are able to do so. We are not there yet. YET!

Banks has measurements, but no CBs heart. Too laid back. No Top Gun fighter pilot attitude. Counter puncher, no attack dog in his nature. Nice guy that will stick around too long. #myronlewis

I think Lovie was just trying to cover all his bases until he got familiar with the players on our team. Example : Josh McCown and Mike Jenkins.
He kept saying: “we we’re 4-12”.
So I think he trusted no one on Schiano’s old team.

Man some Buc fans just want INSTANT success from draft picks. Same as a first year coach. INSTANT success.
Give a coach 3 years for damn’s sake. I’m guilty of it too. I’ve been bitching about Lovie, but I’ve tempered my expectations. I’ll give him 3 years.

Bucs need a: MLB, free safety, CB, and situational pass rusher. So trade Banks, Barron or the other SS (only need one of them for that money), Foster, Vjax (before he shows the league that he’s not as good anymore), and Martin. Trade all of these for 3rd or higher round draft picks and there is your future.

didn’t the bucs start schiano Year 1 with a 1-4 record before reeling off 5 straight wins? gotta have something to hope for….ravens at home, bye week, an iffy vikings team, then the browns….getting back to .500 isn’t a complete pipe dream, no?

My think on Lovie is that his strenght and comfort level is anchored in the NFL of yesteryears…he is reactive to current NFL…in other words playing catch up…BTW…Arroyo ,sp, is doing an excellent job,considering everything.

I think we are all guilty of it. This is our team we want them to win. But you are right on. The last thing we need to do is make hasty decisions about our roster and our coach. We need to build.
We don’t want to emulate Oakland, Jacksonville, etc…we need stability.

Everyone was on here last night saying it was one play,one mistake or one penalty that lost the game for them.
I was thinking last night NOPE. It was the hands to the face on 3rd and 10 in overtime that did it. We stopped them, it was 4th down and they HAD to punt it back. Yup this is the one that did it for me.

I would think most Buc fans would be numb to losing by now like I am, but I guess not. This is my team. I’m stuck with them. I expected the Bucs to lose badly yesterday. Maybe I was wrong to think that way, because some say the Saints aren’t all that this season. They almost won and had the Saints on the ropes at one point. Right now that’s good enough for me.
Cut the penalties in 1/2 and this team is going to be very good. Yes I said very.

The biggest play to me was the 4th quarter catch and fumble my Colston that was called an IMCOMPLETE!!!! He caught the ball, made a football move and fumbled. We would have gotten the ball with 28 seconds left on their side of the field and won with a FG.

Lovie suffered a huge setback to his plans for Top 5 defense when he could not get his best friend Rod Marinelli to be released from his contract in Dallas. Never say never.

he played a good game, he’s getting much better. they may have racked up the yards, but the secondary seemed to be getting more in tune with the system. now if they could just tighten it up a bit.
and Barron was the man . he was slappin mo bit#$es than me on after havin three forties.

It’s funny how schiano couldn’t get 3 years to improve, as a rookie/2nd year HC but Lovies with more than a decade of coaching exp., a lapdog GM and millions spent on non-productive free agent gets a free ride for 3 years. Btw there were several 3rd n ??? Plays in OT. Like a 3rd n 2 where they ran the ball up the gut for 3 yards. That must have been acceptable bc it was on mccoy and we know he can do no wrong.
80 yard drive and we’re focusing on a 5 yard penalty for a first down. Okay!!

Also it was 3rd and 10 and they stopped them making it 4th down and a punt back to us. The 80 yard drive would have never happened without that hands to the face.

Lovie came into Tampa and was so quick to say we are what our record says we are ”were a 4-12 team ” OK well now here we are under lovie the one who evaluated to roster and were 1-4 and all I hear from him is excuses and it’s kind of pathetic that I have to say Greg schiano had a better defense. Admit you’re passing defense sucks and get it corrected, stop pretending you have no problem covering the middle of the field. Your team keeps getting posterized every week. Own up to it

Do L&L start the improving marker @ 4-12 ?…after all last years team …the team that got the HC & GM fired and 1/2 the roster churnned and burned……so with the new…where is the improved ?
Lovie is living in the PAST…..and simply put…the New NFL is not in his coaching DNA…..

You do realize Greg Schiano’s D still to this day, gave up the most pass yards in team, if not league history. And do you also remember how he alienated a player the new regime had to go out and spend ridiculous money on to replace. You want Schiano, just buy Madden 25 and substitute that for all of this years’ Bucs games. Like Chris Breezy says, theses tricks ain’t loyal. Everybody feels entitle to a winning Bucs team, yet down talks Lovie’s efforts as if we didn’t just leave 5 years of head coach purgatory, none of our former HCs are running teams right now, not pop warner, not high school, junior college or regular old NCAA.

Great thanks for the history lesson so OK since you say it’s OK for a coach who made his name in the NFL as a to defensive mind to have such a bad defense on everyone Dooley days were right on schedule nothing to worry about. While growing and improving your team like every other coach in the NFL you should expect to have one of the worst defenses in the NFL for 2 or 3!!!! How many corners or safeties come out of the draft and dominate from the start? If the players aren’t here they still have to be found and developed. Who knew the defense Tampa made famous was so hard to teach, that’s embarrassing in of itself

Banks is not a good player Joe. Not sure what he has done to make you feel that way. One interception does not negate the way he loses focus of his receiver in his zone, especially in red zone where that awareness should be high.

Buc Brothers…. relax. This team hasn’t been competitive in 2 of the past 3 years. The last year of the Raheem era featured most games that were well out of hand by the 2nd quarter, the last half of Schiano’s first season saw the same happenings, and we weren’t even competitive in one game until week 8 or 9 last season.
Yes, we lost three close games. Three games that came down to the last drives of the game… we won one game featuring the same scenario. I’ll take it. No, I’m not happy we’ve lost, I’m happy we’re competing. It usually takes teams about 5 weeks to acclimate themselves to a new coach and his system. This was week 5, I expect this team to continue to improve.
