McCoy: It Has To Be Fixed Now

Gerald McCoy took on answering arguably the biggest question facing the Buccaneers’ defense all season.
There is no more room for failure, says No. 93.
Of course, Joe’s referring to the Bucs’ apparent allergy to covering tight ends.
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network recently, McCoy was asked about the weekly trouble.
“Well, there’s always some holes in the Tampa-2 defense,” McCoy said. “And, you know, sometimes guys get out of place with switching. Sometimes we’re in man and sometimes we’re in the zone, and guys just have to be in the right zone. They have to get over sooner. Sometimes there’s some shifts and motions where guys have to switch their assignment or switch the zone they’re in. And sometimes, you know, we get out of place. It’s something we know we have to fix definitely going into the Saints. Playing Jimmy Graham, it has to be fixed; it has to be fixed now.”
As Derrick Brooks warned fans, as did Warren Sapp, there is a learning curve to Lovie’s old school Tampa-2 defense. And it’s steeper and more exposed when the pass rush in inconsistent.
Joe’s confident the Bucs will need that quick fix McCoy is referencing, in order to keep the Saints under 28 points today.

Lovie Smith’s defense has shown to be a poor defense for today’s NFL.
Expect more shredding today…
This secondary is gonna be shredded like Freddy Krugger slices and dices his helpless victims.
The Bucs defense will be the helpless, hapless, no answer to Drew Brees’ slashing.
Now on the other hand, Mike Glennon will have a great game.
Mike Glennon would pick apart Lovie Smith’s porous defense… with his eyes closed. That is just how BAD Lovie’s defensive scheme is.

Im actually amped for today’s game especially after what we did last week….we REALLY NEED to stomp the Saints, and our DB’s better be sticking like glue on Graham!!!

Tampa 2 works well if it is run right just look at Seattle. Some things take time and maybe a little more personal tweaking. We are stuck with two strong safeties no free safety but guaranteed money most likely stopped the Bucs from making changes there. The defense will get better as the year goes on. We have had 3 coaches in a little over five years it takes time to put in a new system (the third new system in a little over five years) and change the culture.

@#237 – didn’t you read the article? Everything Joe wrote was about the learning curve it takes to get where this thing needs to be. I’m not going to call my 3 years old a couple of failures because he hasn’t learned to read yet because they’re learning something new. Two hall of famers talked about how long it took to learn the system and implored is to give these guys time. Are you suggesting that they don’t know what they’re talking about? You may not want to be patient enough for it to come together but the powers that be knew what they were getting in to because they’ve danced this dance before. When those former Bucs jump ship and say they should’ve had it by now then I’ll get worried but as long as the guys who understand the nuances of the defense are on board then I’m ok with giving them some more rope

Look no further than the Cowboys who runs our D. All the experts predicted they would be the worse on the NFL. Possibly in the history of the NFL. With a year learning it they have begun to master. And if I’m not mistaken Seattle also runs the same D.
With all that said its going to be a long day for the Bucs D. Glennon will have to complete more than his paultry 50%. He will also need to not wait till second half to wake up and play well. If not this game might be over by the first Qtr.

Would you guys bitching about the completion percentage just shut your traps? There were many passes that were on the money, but were simply dropped by the receiving corps. Just stop it already.
This team is going to take time to gel. We all want to win right now, and we’re all tired of the performances over the past 8 years or so. We all want to be in contention. There needs to be time allotted to let Lovie Smith get this team to where he needs it to be. I’m not saying give him a pass for bad coaching, but there has to be an initiation phase if you will.

It’s very convenient to say the Tampa 2 is a defense that can’t be run effectively in today’s NFL. It’s also a very inaccurate statement.

All it takes is one scooped fumble for a TD, or a pick-6. The competition (and confidence) within the unit will increase dramatically. That will be the biggest boost to this defense. It’s nice to get three-and-out, but it’s even better to leave the field carrying the ball.

Tampa 2 haters need to recognise that it is a defense run by many teams in the NFL. It’s run better by some teams than others, but rumours of its demise are ill-informed.

Seatle plays a lot of Cover 3, not tampa 2, and the reason they can run that D so well, is because of their dynamic, safeties, especially Thomas. They also play tight on the receiver’s with their really tall corner’s. But the real key to their team’s success in my opinion: they don’t ask player’s to do things they not good at. They just highlight and figure out each players strength’s and have them do that only.

I do know if Dallas and Carolina is running out defense and look better there are two things in play:
– There are learning issues:
Players are struggling with identifying keys and getting to the right spots (Hello LBs and safeties)
– Frasier is trying to disguise coverages and it’s making players that aren’t good in man or coverage specialists struggle even more. Keep it simple and let the guys identify and attack.

For those who were around in the early days, can you tell me which came first: the terrible fan base or the bad team?
It seems like Bucs fans are the worst kinds of fans. Impatient and ignorant. They don’t know how a good team should be put together but they want it done right now. They don’t understand what goes in to implementing a new system but they want it to work perfectly from the first snap. They don’t know what a QB is responsible for but they want him to have mastered his job right out of the gate his rookie year.

I agree completely, even major Wright came out and and said it took him a full season (while he was in Chicago) to really get a grasp of the Tampa 2 and that he really started improving in his 2nd season. I know it’s what no one wants to hear but you have to Give the guys time to learn
