“I Didn’t Play Too Well”
September 30th, 2014In the Bucs’ locker room today, safety Dashon Goldson was asked to name the toughest tight ends in the NFL.
He gave a few names — interestingly, none were tight ends that roasted the Bucs through the first quarter of the season. But then Goldson quickly and genuinely referenced how the Bucs’ young tight end could hit that level soon.
Of course, Goldson was referring to manbeast rookie tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who returned from two weeks off nursing a bum ankle to shine in Pittsburgh.
Seferian-Jenkins had three catches for 44 yards, including a big 21-yard snatch on a 2nd-and-23 throw late in the game. He also was open in the end zone in the fourth quarter, but Mike Glennon threw far to low to take advantage of the 6-foot-5 Dunkaneer.
This afternoon, Joe asked Seferian-Jenkins how he played Sunday. And the big fella wasn’t happy.
“I didn’t play too well,” Seferian-Jenkins said. “I thought I could have done a lot of better. You know, the details and techniques of things I didn’t play well enough, luckily well enough that I could help them get a win. We’ll get back it at this week and we’ll get better. I’ll get better.”
His comments reminded Joe of when Seferian-Jenkins sternly proclaimed, “I came here to dominate.” He’s an exceptionally driven young guy.
As for his ankle health, it’s not 100 percent, so he told Joe today at One Buc Palace. “I’m getting better. I’m working towards it.”

This guy is the reason Tim Wright was expendable. Wright has 4 catches for 35 yds through four games, not one game. Mankins is stabilizing the line. If this continues, great trade.

He’s going to take some time to get there, especially with an injury to work through, but I think this kid is going to be a big factor. Once we get him and Evans up to speed and we can bring in Sims to compliment them and an offense that is run by its coordinator then I think we’ll have a legit offense.

2015 should be interesting if all these rookies can stay healthy. It’s shame none of them are right now. Who knows if they’d be playing lights-out (aside from Evans), but what we’ve seen from ASJ so far says he’s a monster in the making. One of the last people on earth I’d want to take down in the open field.

I really like this guy, he is a level headed dude and speaks with intelligence and purpose. I think he has the ceiling of a dominant TE. Basically Winslow without the diva attitude. Just hope the guy can stay healthy and he will be special.

Also, if Glennon is good enough to make it through this year looking at least like an average QB with the injured talent off the field – it’d be great to see what he could do with a healthy offense to work with. Lets face it, the Bucs aren’t injury-ravaged on offense, per se – but when your top 2 WR’s are either dinged or out, your baby monster TE is dinged up, the star RB isn’t 100% and your rookie RB hasn’t even seen the field yet – you’ve got to think there are better days ahead.
Which is why I’m not going to go apeshit crazy if things are a little tougher the next couple of games. Get some guys back and healthy in the second half of the year and then start seeing if they can click a little bit before the season winds down.

I’m disappointed this kid has a bum wheel right now, would really like to see how he plays at 100%. He’s got all the tools to be a dominant 3 down player, just needs to stay healthy and put it all together.

Julius Thomas did nothing his rookie year; played in 5 games, started one, had one catch – thats it. Then last year he had a coming out party: 788 yards on 65 catches. ASJ has the tools to be that good, and maybe better. Wouldn’t that be cool?!!

Low or not, Jenkins was definitely interfered with during the play. Ball is thrown, Jenkins is trying to make a play on it but the LB has his back to the ball prevents him from doing so while not trying to make a play on the ball. That, is pass interference.
Some strange non calls in that game.
September 30th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
@ddneast,
No, it’s only a pass interference if we are on defense. At least, that’s been my interpretation of the rule. Clearly that was face guarding.

Don’t know if this is the case or not but I wonder if ASJ is still learning how to play effectively at his size. He is pretty young and every time I see him on the field he looks like he’s lumbering a bit. He’s a huge guy and i’m sure that he’ll be great but I wonder if an actual offseason where he can hone his skills properly will give him a big jump next year
September 30th, 2014 at 2:38 pm
I think Evans and ASJ can usec a full offseason in the weight room to get their bodies a little stronger to adjust to this level of physicality. And they both missed significant time this offseason and that’s crucial for a rookie not only mentally but physically
September 30th, 2014 at 2:38 pm
Seferian-Jenkins is obviously the real deal and the sky’s the limit for this guy. The play was pass interference. And Soggy, I like seals but those Aints seals variety do need to be clubbed something fierce.

the only thing seeming to stand between this kid and a stellar career is the potential for injury. he’s been hurt almost since his senior year, and the NFL doesn’t allow for much time to heal up. between lingering injuries and the rookie wall, it may be unfair to expect too much this year, but i’m really excited about the kid

no pass interference…
glennon hit the defender in the back! how was that a catchable pass?
lmao

they need playing time not weight room.

We stole mankins lol, Tim Wright does not look good, and honestly neither did Revis lastnight, he got burned several times by Dwayne Bowe. You could clearly see that the patriots are struggling without Mankins.

Just when the offense showed some potential to be exciting in the 2nd half, Evans had to get hurt. Bucs may be snakebitten as well.

Let Glennon ride this season out then trade him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Then see what Barron and Banks do this season, if at the end they are no better than they are now then trade them too.
With the 3rd pick in the 2015 draft the Tampa Bay Bucs select: Jamis Winston, quaterback from Florida

A lot of good points taken from this article. The line from NE isn’t as good. Ours got a little bit better. ASJ is a stud. In fact with M.Evans and C.Sims we should have better weapons to work with. I can’t wait to see what R.Herron has to offer too. Although he has dropped some balls it appears most of our WR been dropping balls. I hope M.Glennon starts over J.McCown. Looking forward to the next game.

The defender impeded ASJ’s ability to get to the ball. Had the defender turned his head to look for and play the ball – no pass interference. But he never turned his head – so it was pass interference. That flag/call gets thrown/made on a regular basis.
ASJ has a bright future it would seem and Evan’s was certainly displaying top 10 talent in this last game before the injury. Initial indicators were that Simms is going to be a good player too – so I believe we got 3 very good offensive weapons in the draft this year (maybe 4 if Herron can ever figure out how to hang onto his “catches”). Of course you have to stay healthy to be a good contributor so time will tell that story – but those I see on here saying they don’t think L&L are any good at evaluating talent are mistaken IMO.

Hey!! Lets trade everybody and start over again and again and again. Winston needs to grow up a bit (lot).
