Yes, after seeing Tampa Bay hand-picked quarterback Josh McCown fumble (more to the point: intercept) his way through three losses, it became clear the Bucs were going nowhere with McCown at quarterback.
The Bucs may not go anywhere with Mike Glennon, but what the hell? Let’s give the kid a fair shot and see what he can do.
Joe’s good friend, “The Commish,” Justin Pawlowski takes it another level. He’s bitter Glennon wasn’t given a fair shot all along.
Pawlowski now writes about the Bucs for Scout.com. After yesterday’s thrilling victory, he’s irritated Lovie denied Glennon the chance to compete for the starting quarterback job, and had he been the starter, Pawlowski thinks the Bucs could have been 3-1.
How can the head coach of a team in the NFL not see that Glennon would clearly give the Bucs a better chance to win over Josh McCown?
Glennon gives the Bucs a significantly better shot at beating both the Panthers and Rams to start the season, while no QB on the Bucs roster had a shot against the Falcons.
Could the Bucs have been 3-1 with Glennon as their starter? The one thing we do know is that the Bucs would have had a much better chance to do so.
The reason why the head coach wouldn’t let Glennon compete is because he had love-struck eyes and, there was all that cash the Bucs shelled out to land McCown. As Lovie would say, simple as that.
No, Glennon may never be Dan Marino. But the kid showed Joe something yesterday, playing a top-notch opponent in a hostile atmosphere, and leading the Bucs from the dead in the second half to a win.

Reminds me of a slow old school QB w/a gun as an arm we dont need a mobile QB we need a smart nfl accurate QB maybe glennon is that time will tell… go bucs!!!

I like this post Joe… These things needed to be brought out into the open! I am glad for Mike Glennon, kudos to Louis Murphy and I have to hand it to the overall team for digging down deep inside to play hard yesterday and secure this first victory.

Dude had nothing short ofa surgical performance. He managed over 300 yards despite a rash of drops of well thrown balls. All against a steelers defense that was playing at home. One interception that wasn’t his fault. The kid killed it yesterday. The detractors will cling to whatever perceived shortcomings they’ve made up but I’m sold and if he plays that way for the rest of the year then I say we can fill another hole with that first draft pick

You have to give Glennon a lot of credit. The Bucs had ZERO running game and he managed to make the throws when he needed to make the throws.
The offensive line also did a superb job of giving him enough time.
You have to wonder if Lovie will stubbornly still declare:
“Josh is our starter…”
The roof at One Buc might fall in on him if he did.

In hindsight Glennon should have started.
Lovie thought josh would be stabilizing but. Instead he really cost us the first two with those picks.
So legit criticism. But the man coached them up good for this game after the Atlanta meltdown.
Gotta give him a wee bit of credit there.

If you read enough comments, you know how I feel about Lovie Smith and his brand of football. One game is nice, great comeback, but lets see how Mike does over the next 2 weeks, with 2 more away games against the Saints and Ravens there should actually be less pressure on him than them being home games, but none the less, these will be two very tough games to win. As long as he looks like he has command of the offense, he should start. McCown needs to earn whatever guaranteed money he was given by transitioning to QB coach, he seems to excel in that position.

I’m sorry, anybody in the local media like Justin who made personal attacks and jokes about Glennon sounding like a dumb country bumpkin have no credibility. Remember this from Justin? “DA DA DA I’M Mike Glennon”. How about this from Duemig – “Opie? He ain’t Spit”? Guys like this in the local media only chance at credibility now is the hope that Glennon fails and if I could, I’d ban them from anything Buccaneers. #3rdRateTalent.

The O line had a few mental errors but the blocking was good. Glennon had enough time to throw and for the most part was surgical. The reason he is better than M is he gets the ball out quicker with more authority and more accurate.
The bucs still need help but it appears the o line is fine and will continue to get better. Its the D that is having problems.

You know this morning I was thinking about earlier posts years back about Josh Freeman needing but never truly having that “signature win”. I mean sure he but the saints and falcons as well ass the colts in 2011 but were they signature wins when they were down? Mike Glennon, in just under a year starting already has one! and its a doozy.

I already gave Lovie strike 1 this off-season when he pulled that crap. What has Josh Mccown ever done?? And I’m disgusted at everyone that said he was the better qb. Now with hindsight you’ll I guess youlll all be able to see it now smh

If the Offense line continues to improve so dramatically each week, this could be a very good year yet for whoever is QB. Next week at saints will be a nice test for our line. Saints def line struggling and that team needs a win – BAD –

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This is a bruised and beat-up team. I wish Joe would change the subject, get away from quarterback controversies. How about some conversation about what a terrible strength and conditioning staff we must have to produce this Mash squad. We’ve lost seven starters on defense at various times already and now likely have two starters at wide receiver who were cut before the season started. This can’t just be bad luck.

The reason Glennon didn’t get a shot was because before any Head Coach was even hired, most of the local media was crapping on Glennon. When Lovie was hired the majority of the media wanted him to draft Manziel and wrote this stuff constantly every single day. The media told anyone who would listen that Glennon wasn’t the answer. They beat that horse to death an unfortunately Lovie listened, and brought in the veteran McCown. The rest is history. It amazes me how short memoried some of you media people really are.
Nobody has a short memory, but there are plenty of cloudy memories like yours. And who says Glennon is “the answer?”–Joe

I couldn’t be any happier after watching the Bucs: a) play a competitive game against a decent team with a good QB; and b) actually win that game. But, man, they made a lot of mistakes. The delay of game penalties were embarrassing, lots of dropped passes, no running game and Steeler receivers running wide open on many plays. (While Buc receivers usually had a Steeler draped over them.) Still need to clean up a lot of these things.

100% agree. Simms draft pick seems now more and more like a need pick. for whatever reason, people are stick with the impression that Doug Martin is an elite back..
Also if we declare Glennon as our franchise QB, be ready to sign all available OL in FA and multiplr high draft picks in the OL. The kid can throw but he can’t extend a play with its legs..

The big difference in the 4th game was the defense played better toward the end of the game. I think both of the QBs have played really bad at times and alright at times. It’s taking time to come together just like DB and others warned us fans about.

I never listen to the AM station in the afternoon anymore but today I’m going to tune in just to see if the host can bring himself to actually acknowledge the good game or if he’s going to only look at the stat line (doubt he watched the game) and see the completion percentage and assume that it was due to bad passes

Loyalty is a good trait in a lot of career fields. NFL head coach is not one of them. So while it’s admirable Lovie wants to be loyal to “his guys”, that’s one of the major things that got him fired in Chicago. Winning is all anyone in this fanbase cares about. Handing the job to McCown unilaterally without a competition was moronic. Going back to McCown now? Fireable. Certainly a move that will infuriate the fan base. McCown is what he is. Glennon can be something more. No more wasting time on McCown.

3 wins might be a reach, the Bucs might not have beat Carolina with MG at the helm, but who knows; they may have got it done. Now the Rams are a different story: the Bucs should lament that loss the same way the Steelers and their fans are over the loss to the Bucs; just one less mistake….. It took the Bucs to implode on special teams especially with the blocked kicks giving the Lambs a couple of FGs, have key fumbles and picks kill drives, and have the defense essentially crap the bed during the 4th quarter all combined to give the Rams their upset (yes after seeing the Bucs play with half the cylinders running I think the Bucs are more talented than the Lambs). Eliminate just one mistake and the Bucs win; having Glennon in that game probably would have been enough to beat the Rams. Great win yesterday, hopefully the coaches continue to go with MG through the bye week and then compare stats after both QBs have 3 starts under their belt.
Right nowadvantage Glennon and DO NOT GIVE ME THAT “YOU CAN NOT LOSE YOUR STARTING JOB TO INJURY” line! What a load of crap: McNown would lose his job to inept play not injury if Lovie decides to go with MG.

Unfair treatment? Really Joe?
The truth of the matter is that Josh played well enough to win despite the interceptions. In fact the offensive coordinator/Qb coach was having a tough time calling plays- see #Inexperienced playcaller.
If the defense decided to show up for those first two games they would have won both of them as Josh had us in position to pull out a win at the end of both of those games.
The Atlanta game was a butt kicking and there’s nothing anyone can do about those. I don’t even get upset at all about that one. But the other two we would have had, if the defense played even remotely like they did this Sunday.
And in case you guys aren’t familiar with Lovey Smith’s general philosophy on young Qb’s, he does not like to throw them to the wolves unless absolutely necessary. He prefers to do it the old way- let them ride the bench for a couple years before starting.
If Mccown would have shown up like he did last year, which is what Lovey had intended, he would be tearing up the league right now. There is NO comparison to the way Mccown looked last year Vs Glennon of last year. Instead, hampered by a terrible defense in games 1-3 and no actual experienced playcaller, he was trying too much.
Unfair to Glennon? More like unfair to Mccown.

I wasn’t there, but almost unanimously I read that McCown was considerably better in practice. This is why I’m not upset Glennon was the backup. However, it appears as if Glennon is a gamer and McCown is a practice player. As long as we stick with Glennon, no one was treated unfairly.

Ought to be interesting radio at 3 PM today and I am not talking about Booger’s show! Its okay to say that Glennon may not be the QB of the future but right now he is the best option to win. Christ it is pretty obvious that MG has a better chance of being the “quarterback of the future” rather than McNown even if its not a great chance. Doesn’t it serve the Bucs organization best if the team sees what MG can do under Arroyo so that decisions can be made about the future; ie getting a franchise QB with the first rounder in 2015 or filling another glaring need. Starting McNown does not accomplish this but starting MG will and just maybe he actually begins to look like a QB that might stick a bit longer than a journeyman…. Cmon Lovie, at least let the kid start vs the Aints and Ravens and then re-evaluate over the bye week……

It’s clear the MGM is out in full force – yuck. This franchise has never had a real franchise qb and any resemblance of competency we automatically annoint the quarterback as the savior.

Already going overboard with the Glennon thing after one game. He had a good game great 4th quarter but he was still inaccurate downfield. Hey I know… How about you give some credit to the receivers who took his passes and turned them into big gains….. There were plenty of time after the catch. They get blame for drops but I guess Glennon made them look good

I don’t get why coaches in the NFL today can’t be men. Own up to your mistakes. Yeah, we shelled out money to a QB to come here and start. It didn’t work out. Admit it and move on. Clearly Mike Glennon (The only Bucs QB to win in 2 years) is the starter at this point.

I’m one of Glennon’s biggest critics, but the problems that plagued him before, and for much of the first half, were definitely NOT on display in the second half. He made quick decisions, he didn’t hold onto the ball too long, and the few intermediate passes he tried were on point. He’s never going to be great with his legs, but at least in the Atlanta game he showed better mobility that he had last season.
I tell you though, that first half was classic Glennon. Lots of 2 yard checkdowns on 3rd and 10, intermediate passes that lacked oomph, a sack that was clearly on him for holding the ball too long, and that great Mike Glennon stat line, 1 TD to 0 INTs but just a shade over 50 yards for the first half.
The offensive line was downright dominant for most of the game in pass protection and Glennon did what he needed to do. I was impressed. I’m still not convinced, Kirk Cousins of the Redskins had a very impressive game but in less than a week he went from class of the town to ass clown. Glennon has to build from this if he wants to cement his status.

Largely agree with your assessment. What is not mentioned enough about Glennon is just how smart he is. He’s is of waaay above average in the intelligence department. He is a quick study.
Yes he lacks mobility, but his arm strength and accuracy are more than adequate. Perhaps intelligence is just as valuable as running ability.
The only truly great QB I can recall who was a total dumbarse was Dan Marino. And perhaps it’s no coincidence that cement head never won the big the big one. And nobody can deny Marino’s incredible gifts when it came to throwing the pigskin, one of the best arms of all time.

At the end of the day, Glennon gets the ball out quicker and makes smarter decisions than McCown. It is what it is. He might not be the saviour but he’s clearly the best option right now. Roll with him.

lol. I love the heat on the local hosts. Big dog yesterday was crushing Glennon. Then we win and nothing. When I ask if he can say something nice about the kid because as a BUCS fan, this is a huge win. I am pretty sure he blocked me. Talk about thin skin……
Any host that can’t at least say, GO BUCS, if we win isn’t worth our ears. Except when Joe is on of course.

The oline didn’t play great or much improved there were at least two times when glennon had unblocked rushers in his face and still got the ball out. Glennon carved up lebeau’s defense plain and simple. He was able to read the blitz and pass into the open spot. Something mccown could not do in 3 games.
As for the defense getting better they gave up more points yesterday than in the first two games. Not to mention someone put out an ABP on mccoy in the second half. The def forced a whooping one turn over. And recv were still wide pen down the field. Antonio brown makes that catch and we lose the game.
Glennon only had 1 turnover which wasn’t his fault and straight up put the team on his back for the win. Any other interpretations are simply flawed.

Imo a team has a good oline when they have consistent and consecutive 100 yard rushers regardless of who runs the ball. Not in all cases but it a good measuring stick. We rushed for 63 yards on 20 carries. 3 yards per carry.

Totally agree 100%. People forget about Seattle last year and how he played that game. I guarantee you we would have been 3-1 and leading the div right now. Thanks for being a stubborn ass Lovie!!!

SAMCRO You are dead on…. This column, joe’s good friends on fm and DER dog carry a great deal of responsibility for Lovey’s reluctance to start Glennon. He remembers how the press turned on him in Chicago and then he was fired. That dog has tried his best to shoot Glennon down every way he could. It still stems from his love affair with Freeman and hatred of Schiano. He said as much Monday on his program. He even said he was still waiting on the report about who leaked Freemans records. As if he didn’t know… Joe I have to give it to you that you have somewhat started to support Glennon but lets be honest, you still have doubts about his skills. You only want him instead of that loose McCowen. If Lovey dosn’t want to play him, then he ought to cut him so he can be a winner somewhere else like most of the others we had and lovey cut. Lovey wouldn’t know talent if it bit him in the ass.
