Power Run Buster: Gerald McCoy

How many points is Gerald McCoy's return worth?

How many points is Gerald McCoy’s return worth?

Atlanta torched the Bucs for eight touchdowns — eight — in less than three quarters last week. Joe even saw droves of Falcons fans leaving the Georgia Dome in the third quarter, apparently tired from all the celebrating at the Bucs’ expense.

The NFL Playbook video crew dove into Bucs Xs and Os and implies a Sunday return of Gerald McCoy could make a world of difference against Pittsburgh.

The video look by Sterling Sharpe, Shaun O’Hara and Brian Billick is here.

Billick pulled film of Tampa Bay versus the Panthers on opening day, McCoy’s last full game for the Bucs, in order to illustrate how McCoy is too fast for pulling guards and blows through double teams.

That presence, per Billick, should greatly inhibit the creative inside cuts of the Steelers nasty backfield duo of LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell, the guy LaDanian Tomlinson says is the best running back in the NFL.

Joe agrees with Billick, but what scares Joe is that the Bucs didn’t exactly do a great job against the run versus the Panthers. And that was with McCoy, Michael Johnson, Adrian Clayborn and Clinton McDonald all playing.

Since the Bucs game, the Panthers run game has done nothing.

Joe’s confident McCoy will return from his hand fracture and have a significant impact tomorrow, but all the other guys on the Bucs’ front-7 are going to have step up in a big way. The loss of McCoy wasn’t worth anything close to 56 points in 43 minutes.

I realize the Steelers have a decent running game, but why in the hell would any team NOT throw the ball at least 80% of the time against our awful defense.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

We are going to need a “Power Pass Buster” on Sunday. B(F)uc the run. Put Ben on his a$$ dammit!!! What good does it do us to stop the run on 1st and 2nd only to have them convert on 3rd with a pass.

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

The Steelers won’t need to throw much if their RB’s cut through the Bucs like a hot knife through butter.

  4. jb Says:

The secondary better be hoping all the Steelers do is run, run, run. That way they won’t be exposed as the pretenders they’ve apparently become. It sucks to have our season over after 3 games! It’s to the point now where watching the Bucs on Sundays, home or away, is like going to to hob you absolutely detest! That’s just sad!

    JOB

  6. RastaMon Says:

“Power Pass Buster”…sounds like something being sold……on a late night infomercial….how much for the second one ?….usually you get 2 for the price of one…..and can we get Overnight Shipping to Pittsburg ,Pa ?…

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I want to see Geraldine take over a game….JUST ONCE! Really starting to think this guy is WAY overhyped. Not that hard to do when he is one of the few so called “Superstars” on your team.

  8. IdahoBucsfan Says:

I miss Schiano! There is No way we wouldn’t be at least 2-1 right now and talking playoffs! 🙁

  9. billy buckaroo Says:

unless this bucs has changed TREMENDOUSLY in the last week,
the team better hope for long sustaining time chewing drives from the offense.
1-2-3 and out sure enough not going to cut it with our defense game plan so far.

  10. DB55 Says:

I stand corrected! 2 plays 1 unblocked. Sounds good to me. Go BUCS!!

  11. buc4lyfe Says:

Run defense sucks and pass defense sucks and sorry GMC we’ve had you many years and regardless of how good you are, you’re presence doesn’t equal wins. We have to be tops the league in first downs allowed

  12. abdominal snowman Says:

GMC is definitely not over hyped. Have you ever seen a game before? He is constantly in the backfield before the lineman can even get a hand on him. He cannot do it by himself. I’d just like to see him make the people around him better.

  13. feelthepewterpower Says:

Against CAR – the defense was gassed being out there on the field so much because our offense struggled.

  14. MGM4Life Says:

I truly think the Bucs are embarrassed and even ashamed of how they played Thursday at Atlanta. I see a focused and energized team wanting to make a statement ( ala-the Seattle game last year…but for four quarters rather than one half) Hopefully they have heard the criticism, read the blogs and fan comments and they use this to inspire a win. Hopefully Pitt is taking us lightly and we come out of the gate swinging and connecting. GO BUCS!!!!!

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @Idaho

Schiano lost his first two games last year thanks to not trusting the veteran QB and over-conservative playcalling. Just like Lovie.

  16. Gt40bear Says:

Love my Bucs but am a citizen of Realville. 37-6 Steelers. 🙁

  17. rayjay1122 Says:

What do you call it when boredom and depression occur together? Answer….Another Bucs, Bulls and Gator season.

  18. rayjay1122 Says:

Hopefully with the Lightning season quickly approaching, sports fans in Tampa can actually see a professional team win a game. The Baker act just can’t stop all of the Skyway jumpers if not.

  19. BFFL Says:

Look for Dane Fletcher to continue progress. I predict people will be saying “Foster who” pretty soon.

  20. Buck Rogers Says:

#84 Brown is going to go wild against cover 2. Need lots of press or it will once again get ugly fast!

  21. John Sapp Says:

If I was Mike Tomlin I would play the 2nd or 3rd string QB for a certain win.

  22. Architek Says:

Joe take the evening off – the score and outcome of this game has already been decided by the Bucs!

    Go grab a beer –

  23. Zam Says:

LB’s and nose tackle mean more than 3-tech in this defense for run-stopping.

  24. BucBob1 Says:

A sure way for Pittsburgh to strike fear into the hearts of the Buccaneers, would be to start their backup quarterback.

  25. Architek Says:

    Very nice BucBob1 – Hahahahaha

  26. Paul Says:

Sad that this defense revolves around a single player

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I still think they should be sitting McCoy at least 4 weeks.
