Blount 11th All-Time In Yards Per Carry

September 25th, 2014
TCBlountsmile

The Bucs will see a familiar smile Sunday

Now here’s a trivia question: What former Buccaneers running back ranks among the all-time greats in yards per carry?

No, it’s not James Wilder (3.6 yards per carry), Errict Rhett (3.5) or Warrick Dunn (4.1).

The answer, after 596 career carries, is LeGarrette Blount. The man Greg Schiano ousted but Bill Belicheat embraced will face the Bucs on Sunday. Blount is having another strong season.

And after his 10-carry, 118-yard game last week against the mighty Panthers defense, Blount is now averaging 4.8 yards a carry in his career. That places him among the all-time greats, 11th all-time.

Pretty impressive stuff. Somehow, Blount has managed to thrive, despite not being a threat in the passing game.

Blount has a unique running style. Works wonders against certain teams.
He needs carries to get going, and he can then bust them

I am certain a decent OC could find work for him.

Here’s some trivia for Joe: Which Buccaneer running back could not gain half a yard on two tries in a crucial road divisional game in Atlanta?

  3. robert9 Says:

not looking forward to him snowplowing GMC and hurdling Barron.

  4. RastaMon Says:

    he’ll fumble

    @ Stratobuc

Here’s some trivia…Name 1 player in sports history to have succeeded every play in their career.

Pointing out a play where Blount messed up during his rookie year as if it is an indictment that he is not a good player is idiotic. I have never agreed with the bucs getting rid of blount and nuggets like this one is just another reason why.

  6. Buddhaboy Says:

boy, that Atlanta game years ago still nags at me. Freaking stovall missing on the sidelines on the kickoff. My, how things have changed since then.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Ha. I picked up Blount 2 days ago for my fantasy team. He won’t get that many carries but I think they will definitely give it to him near the goaline or in the red zone. I’m sure he’s hungry to score on the Bucs. We have a decent run D though so idk.

We’ll see I never play this FF crap. I played about 12 years ago or so on NFL.com.

  8. pick6 Says:

that was the frustrating thing about blount. he could give you a SportsCenter 75-yard run while hurdling a guy when you were up by 2 TDs in the 4th quarter, but he’d dance and get stuffed on short yardage with the game on the line.

  9. pick6 Says:

blount can’t really find holes on his own, but if he happens to end up running through one by accident and gets to the second level, look out

  10. Espo Says:

He hurdles 4.8 yards per play.

Yeah Stratobuc, that pissed me off. It’s no indication as to how his career is going though. I blame the O line as usual.

  11. WalkdaPlank Says:

Blount is a one-trick pony. Always was. Run up the middle, shoulders down, and just keep the legs moving.

    Can’t block, can’t catch, can’t cut.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Ha… all of that is why I almost don’t want to start him on my team. Near the goal line and short yardage he got stuffed a lot. Oh well one of my RB’s is hurt and the other is on a bye. So I dropped Bobby Rainey and picked up Blount just for this game.

  13. Waterboy Says:

Blount needs a yard or so to get going but once he’s rolling he’s a hard man to stop. I’m still puzzled as to why Schiano couldn’t figure out how to use him to wear down defenses and mix a little bit of Doug Martin in here and there. Most of his fumbles that I saw was when he was in a crowd fighting for extra yardage. Now his pass blocking his a whole different story.

Fantasy football……pfft! Now I know what happened to ‘hometown’ football fans!

On the first game of the season my true love gave to me a brand new HD TV.
On the second game of the season my true love gave to me two cases of beer for sorrow and a brand new HD TV.
On the third game of the season my true love gave to me three bricks for hurling, two cases of beer for sorrow and a brand new HD TV.
On the fourth game of the season my true love gave to me four pills for nausea, three bricks for hurling, two cases of beer for sorrow and a brand new HD TV.
On the 5th game of the season my true love gave to me five hours of sexy time so did not have energy for the game!!!! No other gifts needed!!!

  16. Waterboy Says:

In 5 seasons Blount has 2,883 yds. averaging 10.1 carries per game. Martin has 1919 yds in 3 seasons while averaging 19.8 carries per game and 141 more carries in his career than Blount.

  17. sho nuff Says:

is he still not very smart? good riddance to him and that other stone talib…rock star loved hom some challenged players….

  18. richardtyson Says:

Donald Penn on Jim Rome is Burning asked Blount, “Why do you always, always, jump over people?”

  19. rayjay1122 Says:

Why does Blount always jump over people? Because he can.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

@Oar…fantasy football is what Lovie preached to the fans during the off-season.

I have 1 FF team. Just for something football related to do outside of watching and blogging about our foolish team that, I love VERY much, more than you know. Which really makes me a fool….and you too for that matter!

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

Ok, but thats only out of 596 carries. He wouldnt even be considered on this of all time leaders without at least 750 carries. Doubt he’ll ever reach that mark. Point is, he doesn’t stack up with the greats.
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/rush_yds_per_att_career.htm

So he doesn’t stack up because he only has the small sample size of 596 carries over 4+ years? Please, that’s no tiny sample size.–Joe

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

I did’nt like it when they dumped Blount either. He and Bell spell double trouble for the Bucs run stuffing D. Keeping them both under 75 yards is what I’m expecting.

  23. Zam Says:

I always thought he had tremendous potential that just needed someone to coach him. Was excited when Schiano came but Schi couldn’t coach a pine cone as it turned out. Glad Blount got somewhere to prove me right.

I felt that way about Clayborn too. Meh, guess I’ll settle for 1 out of 2 at least.

  24. buc4lyfe Says:

Both fumble both can’t block but who would you rather be in Tampa blount or Rainey? I miss that one two punch, only in Tampa would you have weapons like blount and tim wright just to give them away to new England

  25. phreakybucfan Says:

Still annoyed that we got rid of him for a practice squad rb who can’t catch. Everybody makes a big deal about his goal line and short yardage woes while he was here, but a simple piece of coaching in new england fixed that. Put together our three running backs and fullback and you get 24 carat LeGerrette.

  26. OAR Says:

    I’m a fool too?
Says the guy that roots for other team players! So, the “I love VERY much my Bucs” fan is going to be rooting for the Pittsburgh Steeler’s Blount to get more carries, yards, and TDs?! Exactly the point I was making. Fantasy Football has ruined any team’s hometown fans!!

  27. dave Says:

I understand blount not being the smartest or a threat in the passing game. But with the lack of talent on the bucs for the past decade and a half, why not keep players like blount. Just look at all the players around the league that the bucs have let go and are playing well on other teams. The problem with this team is they think too much about the business and get rid of players that really could use on the field. Talib, Bennett, Revis, all of the offensive lineman to ramble off some the top of my head

  28. lightningbuc Says:

    OAR,

I think he was being sarcastic that we ALL are fools for being Bucs fans.

I’m with you – played fantasy football in ’95 when it wasn’t even that popular, and I got sick rooting for players and teams that I didn’t like or who were playing my team. Never played again.

  29. OAR Says:

“He and Bell spell double trouble for the Bucs run stuffing D.”
Don’t you mean…he and Bell spell The “Doobie” Brothers!

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t have any problem with the doobie bros. They just may play better after toking up. Maybe the Bucs D need to do the same to stop them.

  31. MTM Says:

Blount is front runner. When the pressure is off he is awesome. When crucial yardage is needed he dances at the line and gets real small. There are reasons he stay in one place very long.

  32. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Blount is not, never has been, and never will be a short yardage back. He was grossly misused for that purpose by coaches who don’t have a clue. Square peg, round hole. He’s also not a great pass protector. However, if you want to give somebody the rock 20-30 times a game and tell him to get yards and bruise people in the process he does a pretty damn good job of that.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

“Fantasy Football has ruined any team’s hometown fans!!”

I don’t know about “any” teams hometown fans.

To tell you the truth I don’t root for any of the players on my fantasy team. On Sunday if you came up and asked me who my starters are for today, I wouldn’t have a clue. That’s how much I follow my FF team. I check the lineup around Tuesday, make changes here and there. Then I don’t even really go back and check on my team until Sunday night or so, sometimes Monday.

So no, I could care less about my fantasy team. Some of these fools have like 4-5 teams and shyte. They take it real serious too. It’s nutty.

Oh and yes I was being sarcastic. We all are fools for being Bucs fans, but it’s what we are. Tell people today that you’re a Bucs fan and people laugh at you.

    That’s called being a fool.

  34. Wesley Says:

i never liked the decision to let him go

  35. Buc1987 Says:

I see your point now. Okay it’s like this.

Just because I picked up Blount, it won’t make me happy if he scores on the Bucs one bit. It just means that I think he will be hungry to score on the Bucs. I’m probably wrong and he will suck it up though. I hope I am wrong.

That’s why it’s called “fantasy”. Atleast for me anyways. I don’t honestly root for those players in reality. I get you’re point though most of the people that play it do follow it REAL close and it takes away from their team support to a degree.

    I’m not one of them.

Once again signing off. Done rambling.

  36. Capt.Tim, hallucinating inDavie Jones's Locker Says:

I never understood cutting a guy, who ran for 10000 in 13?games. It was pure stupidity then. Still is now!
Can he catch or Pass block real well? No.
But he is a monster running the ball.
Sadly, after Sunday’s game- Blount will spend hours cleaning the Pewter and Red( along with Bits of Barron’s A*+•ole) out of his cleats.
And he could have been here. For low dollar, running with Rainey.

    Another bad move.

Meybe we should let Foster play this Sunday. Meybe, if he’s there, he can stop Blount.

  37. Jon Says:

I agree with caption Tim and his long, crazy name that goes on and on as if he really is a pirate…10,000 yards. Wow. I had no idea. New England is soooo dumb to let him go too, as is Tennessee. Wait, four teams in four years? Wonder why that is.

  38. TbCubanBuc02 Says:

Call me crazy but… I’m slowly starting to think that Doug Martin is a bust. Hopefully I’m wrong.. And forgive me if I sound blasphemous fellow Buc Fans

  39. another J Says:

We plucked him off a practice squad, Blount would have been one of he greatest steals in the NFL! Too bad we couldn’t use him correctly, He also still has a very cap friendly contract. We goofed letting him go…

  40. BucIt941 Says:

Said it since day one. Blount is a beast and it was a bad decision to dog house him for Martin. While Martin continues to keep the benches warm and the Ice tub full Blount just keeps adding to his highlight reel. Martin would have been an amazing compliment to Blount as Cadillac Williams did during LGB’s rookie year.

But no we take the smaller RB and run him into the ground. And for the Hamster lovers out there I haven’t seen much out of Martin in the passing game either. So now it’s just pure runner versus pure runner and Blount has continued to produce time and time again. Just needed to be fed the ball or at the very least be used properly.

Fantasy football……pfft! Now I know what happened to ‘hometown’ football fans!

This is why, as a Bucs fan, I don’t draft anyone that is playing in the NFC South. I can’t bring myself to root for them.

Also, i’ll usually bench someone if they’re going against the Bucs, too.

Unfortunately, though, I HAVE to play Antonio Brown this week cause I have no other options. I’ll just hope that any TD that the Stillers score will go to him and the Bucs still win.

Blount is nowhere mean enough, only seldomly. & why didn’t he jumped higher than Cam for those one yarders we needed so desperately??? He jumps when ball security becomes an issue
