Gerald McCoy Is Fed Up

Gerald McCoy blamed players for not practicing what Lovie Smith teaches during the seal-clubbing in Atlanta.
You think you wanted to toss your dinner all over the bathroom last week with the way the Bucs shat the bed in Atlanta? You are not alone.
The unquestioned leader of the Bucs defense, who was not a part of that debacle against the Dixie Chicks, fingered his teammates for a lousy effort while holding court in front of his locker today.
GMC said flat out the players simply tuned out their coaches in Atlanta, as documented by Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.
“The Thursday night game, that was just a group of guys not being physical, not doing what we were coached to do that week and just letting a team take over,” McCoy said Wednesday. “I had somebody close to me, that I would allow only people close to me to tell me this, but they said Thursday was pathetic. And I believe that.
“It’s kind of bad that that comes from the outside. We have to feel that in the building that our last performance was pathetic. It’s very embarrassing, and that’s not us at all. Coach has not coached us to be that way. If nobody else will say it, I’ll say it. It was embarrassing, and we’ve got to be better.”
Well, this opens up all sorts of questions. Is GMC saying the Bucs have — or some — have already checked out on Lovie Smith? Does this mean some players have thrown in the towel? Or does this just mean the Bucs defenders don’t give a damn?
If the answer is “yes” to any of the above, you can bet your arse said players won’t be back next year. The Bucs, as does every NFL team, tape every move a player makes, whether it is in practice or during a game.
The eye in the sky never lies and for guys who were freelance, give up, quit or give a half-arse effort, that will show up on tape.
And if players did what GMC accuses them of doing, those culprits should be jettisoned from One Buc Palace. Maybe this is what Lovie referred to as “changes?”

I’m not saying you are, but you SOUND like a complete moron. Other people made similar comments about how Warren Sapp broke HIS hand once and played through it, ignoring the fact that a) Sapp missed one game (just like GMC), and b) GMC’s 2nd game was 4 days after he broke his hand, making it all but impossible for him to play then as the first 7-8 days are critical for proper healing.
If McCoy went on IR or something because of it I would wonder about his toughness (although, again, most people don’t seem to understand how much a d-lineman uses their hands to shed blocks, etc), but to bitch because he missed ONE game so the hand could properly heal before he could wear a soft cast and continue playing, is just stupid.

Um, not sure what you’re talking about, GMC got hurt during the Rams game and didn’t play at all during the Falcons game.
He’s already established himself as the bonafide leader of this team, and I have no problem with him calling out teammates’ effort and production as it warrants, because he’s shown that he is willing to lead both verbally and via production.

You have to realize that the Steelers are going to be tough. GMC said it straight that the Bucs need to be tougher.
I don’t buy into the “it ain’t Lovies fault” message, but even worse the running attack of the Steelers features the “Doobie Brothers” with Mr. Bell (who is high from smoking a Blount) in the Camaro on the way to Philly!
If the Bucs D does not get tough….the Doobie brothers will be smokin them all night long!!
Time for a tough QB…need to bring in Tim Tebow to give Glennon a QB competition!! He will fill Raymond James Stadium and he is the only QB in the building that has beat the Steelers!

It’s about time the “leader” actually got on the players. Sapp, brooks and lynch took over the locker after the San Diego game and didn’t stand for any more half a$$ed play from anyone. The coaches can only do so much, the players need to take charge of each other. Don’t play well get your a$$ chewed out by the team.

I believe that after being behind in that game so much so early and then when McCoy went down, the rest of the defense just said
“Forget about it”
No leader really “driving” their team mates on this defense.

I think McCoy is a little soft too, but in fairness, the tough players you refer to played in an era when drug testing wasn’t as refined.
I’m pretty sure LT wasn’t feeling a lot of pain…….ever.

Joe, sorry but it sounds like you’re trying to put words in GMC’s mouth.
Gerald never said that his Bucs teammates had tuned out Lovie. I took it that he was inferring that they weren’t paying close enough attention to their position coaches, and that their technique was lacking. And that’s pretty much what I saw when I watched the game. Poor gap coverage, poor tackling … and the list goes on.
He’s right; it was embarrassing and they have to do better. I didn’t think it was possible to be more snakebit than the Bucs were last year, but I was wrong. When a team has no depth, injuries like the Bucs have already suffered take a toll. Especially when your team is trying to employ a new defensive system.
And oh ya, installing a new offensive system and then losing your offensive coordinator in preseason probably doesn’t help.
Something tells me that our Bucs aren’t going to win the Super Bowl this year (just a hunch), BUT … hopefully they can consistently improve on defense, offense and special teams. A couple of good drafts and who knows …

The entire team should be embarrassed by that effort on primetime TV. It’s way too early for this team to check out on Lovie. I’m sure the players that have been here the past few years are tired of losing, but there’s only one way to fix that. They have to buy in and give their best.

I wished McCoy got on their case when they was down 21-0 in the first. Looks like no one gather the troop for a prep talk. I think we don’t have leader among the player level. All the captain looked sad. Rainey look like he wanted to kill himself. Yet, no one said anything when it mattered. I love McCoy but all I see him do that game is laugh and talk to Means. Again, I rooted for him during bust convos in the past. We have no game day emotional leaders on the player level.

DallasBuc- glad you paying attention. My question was has this team tuned him out for the season. The Pittsburgh game will be telling. If they lay another egg and play with no effort then it would appear that things were trending that way which obviously does not speak well for Lovie. Again, I thought they played with effort during the 1st two games. I have no excuses for Thursday night. I do like that McCoy is calling the team out. Leadership is needed on that team much like Tony had with Sapp, Brooks and Lynch.

Schiano won 7 games in his first season with those “bad” drafted players.
Lovie will be lucky to win 2 games with the crew he put together.
So what you’re saying is this. If all of a sudden the team turns it around this season and they go on a winning streak, it has NOTHING to do with Lovie. It works both ways pal.

The only player that plays with any heart at all on this D is Lavonte David. That is the problem…not enough players with heart. In the past, Brooks, Lynch, Sapp…all had true love for the game. I don’t see anyone on this D that really cares except maybe David and McCoy. I like Gerald a lot, both as a player and person. He says the right things and all, but if he is our leader on D…he needs to step his game up and become the monster we need him to be every snap, not just a few each game. We need nastiness…get penalties…I don’t care. show some heart and pride for a change. Because right now, nobody is scared of this D. They might respect a few players, but nobody is scared.

I don’t think anyone believes in what Lovie is preaching. The Tampa 2 defense hasn’t stop anyone in years. You cut your best player and one of the very best players in the league and tell your team they got better except everyone can see they didn’t. I think everyone on the team knows what we all know that the season is already over. NEXT. I just hope we don’t let Jacksonville & Oakland beat us out of the number one pick.

The effort shows that the Defense knows they are horrible at playing Lovie’s style of defense and know that they are failing to improve at it at all, so they are giving up. The defense doesn’t work without pressure on the QB from the front four and they simply cannot find a way to provide the pressure likely because of the talent available. Plus the personnel don’t really all fit the scheme that well either. The safety’s don’t fit, as they don’t hawk the ball. The SLB and the Mike can’t cover. The DE’s can’t sack, the tackles can’t penetrate. They need to play a different scheme to get some mojo back, which will never happen under Lovie. Don’t get me started on the non-offensive offense, or ludicrous special teams. This season could turn into a fail so huge and so epic, that the Bucs will be lampooned in the media until the end of time. This could be so bad that they pack up and move out of town in the dead of the night, or get contracted by the league. Can a whole team get suspended for a year?

The problem isn’t the Tampa 2, it’s the Tampa 2 with these specific players that don’t fit the scheme, so can’t play it correctly and know that they can’t.

The only way McCoy remains a Buc next year is if they put the franchise tag on him, no way would he sign a new deal, as he wants to win.
