Bucs Secondary In For Challenge

Given how rotten the Bucs’ secondary has been, Ben Roethlisberger may have a field day Sunday.
The strength of a Tampa-2 defense is, when played correctly, taking away the pass. Well, it’s clear the Bucs are not playing that defense properly, as the secondary has been getting roasted.
The embers are still smoldering from last Thursday’s debacle in Atlanta.
And that was without Dixie Chicks stud wide receiver Roddy White.
The Steelers will likely throw deep and throw often on the Bucs, details Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.
As the Bucs get ready to play at Pittsburgh on Sunday, they can be secure in the knowledge that the Steelers have analyzed the tape of Tampa Bay’s Thursday night loss to Atlanta. It’s safe to assume Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is excited about facing the Bucs.
You can bet the Steelers noticed you can throw deep on the Buccaneers. The Falcons were playing without injured receiver Roddy White, yet they still managed to shred Tampa Bay’s secondary. Julio Jones caught five passes for 120 yards on balls that were thrown at least 15 yards downfield. Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan completed six of eight passes for 139 yards and a touchdown on throws of at least 15 yards.
Currently, the Bucs are rock bottom in the NFL in allowing nine yards a pass. Joe really can’t say anything more about that. Speaks for itself.
While Alterraun Verner is playing well, he is getting little help, especially from his safties. The stat geeks don’t like Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron. Now in his third NFL season, Barron simply has yet to demonstrate he can defend in pass coverage consistently.
One of the best arms in the NFL, a guy who can wiggle out of danger from a pass rush — assuming the Bucs can even put together a pass rush — Roethlisberger may be bracing for a field day.
To date this season, the Bucs have not been able to cover tight ends. Heath Miller may be one of the more underrated tight ends in the game and is one of Roethlisberger’s go-to guys.

Joe,
I agree that Barron hasn’t shown anything worthy of the #7 pick in the draft. But might some of his issues this year be explained by the fact it’s a completely new defense, and he’s still learning it? He’s no John Lynch, but I believe (hope?) that once he begins to grasp the basics of the D he will cover and perform better.
Am I incorrect in thinking this? (serious question)

As long as Lovie, and Leslie continue to use a scheme that we don’t have the players for We’ll continue to get torched on defense!
Verner looks okay, Jonathan Banks is regressing, and Leonard Johnson is looking more, and more like EJ Biggers used to look…Lost, and Confused!
The linebackers are seemingly always out of place, The safeties are lost, and the Front four gets about as much pressure as a busted pipe, All indications of poor fitting defensive scheme.

Joe you gotta tell me where you see Barron getting burnt. I’m yet to see anyone get behind him. If memory serves me correctly goldson was on Verner half of the field when Julio burned him. Am I wrong?

that’s exactly what I mean, he’s still figuring out where he’s supposed to be in this defense, and doesn’t even have the opportunity to let his talent show because he’s trying to figure everything out on the fly. I don’t think he’s beating himself per se, but just learning the D, you know?

Bucs defense:
In the 2014 season-opening loss to Carolina, backup quarterback Derek Anderson completed 24-of-34 passes (70.6 percent) for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions
In week 2 loss to St. Louis, third-string quarterback Austin Davis completed 22-of-29 passes (75.9 percent) for 235 yards
Matt Ryan, who was sacked just once and barely pressured otherwise, set a Falcons record for completion percentage by connecting on 21-of-24 passes 3 TD’s (That’s 87.5 percent).

I’m not arguing but need to understand. Goldson gets burnt regularly but Barron makes the tackles right when the receivers catch the passes. He not intercepting anything maybe that what ya’ll are talking about but I just haven’t seen him get burnt on film. He lost a TE coming out of the backfield against the Rams, play went for 4-5 yards other than that he’s making tackles in front of him as soon as the rvc catches the ball.
Correct me if im wrong. Game footage would be great. I just need to know the game and the time on the clock. I can look it up as I have all the games recorded. I pride myself in not being a complete dumbass and this Barron talk has me dazed and confused. If you guys said goldson then I’d be all – yes you’re right but just don’t see Barron playing “bad” he not playing great but he not playing poorly. Again correct me please.

If Bucs fans have a good memory, they’ll remember that the last time the Tampa 2 was actually run in Tampa Bay it surrendered 38 points to Carolina on Monday Night Football, gave up 34 points to San Diego two weeks later, and allowed 31 points to Oakland in the season finale that caused Jon Gruden and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to be fired at the end of the 2008 season.
Speaking of Kiffin, this offseason he was removed as Dallas’ defensive coordinator after the Cowboys allowed 6,645 yards in 2013, which ranks as the third-most yards ever allowed by an NFL team. Kiffin’s Tampa 2 scheme also surrendered 388 first downs last year, which ranks second-worst in NFL history.

Bad scheme. Never understood how, with 7 guys in coverage and 3 receivers, they are wide ass open. Dumb, just dumb.

Predict how many yards and points on offense the Steelers will get Sunday?
I’m going to say they get 450 yards and 38 points. They take their foot off the gas late in the second half. Bucs defense will get strafed again, but it won’t be as bad as Atlanta (is that even possible?)

I also think it’s a waste of time to even predict the Bucs scoring points. I think it’d be more fun to have a drinking game based on dropped passes and holding penalties for the offense.

Midnight on Sept. 27 Big Ben will turn into a pumpkin and throw more than one pick to the Bucs. Glennon will connect to whichever Dunkaneers are playing, including pass interference calls against the Reelers. The home crowd will loudly boo. The Bucs escape with a win and everybody not a Bucs fan will call it a fluke.

I see Barron playing average football so far. When he gets comfortable in this attacking scheme I can see him taking off.
Goldson? Dude came in with much ballyhoo, but I have not really seen too much from him. Well, some good hits that got him fined. That is it.

exactly my point db55, hes in position to make TACKLES 4-5 yards down the feild, and is not in position to prevent a pass from being completed. allowing 4-5 yards a pass play is not winning football, its allowing 1st downs. at some point you have to keep them from getting the ball, not hope they fumble when you hit them.
just watch him in games, you will see the tape in our opponents highlights -.-

Without a pass rush, the defense will get carved up by just about every team. Big Ben will have an easy time, Much like Ryan last week if the pass rush is non-existent. I predict a lot of yelling at the TV again this weekend.

“May” have a field day? More like “how much” of a field day. The Bucs are going to be walking into a slaughterhouse in Pittsburgh. Maybe the offense will do SLIGHTLY better with Glennon, but this defense is going to be ripped a new one. It will be easy, like a hot knife through butter.
42-17 Pittsburgh.
I DARE the Bucs to do better than that.

at least 15 yards downfield. What a horrible analysis Joe!! Three middle was wide open and safety of the back like 20 yards because they were scared. Everyone played off. They’re was alot of running after the catch plus isn’t mike Tomlin a cornerback from the dungy tree, he knows Tampa two he was just smart enough to forget it and go to a 3-4 which is what they’ve always run. It doesn’t take much to realize the corners could give a few more seconds to rush the passer if they plated them closer, our safties are weak and slow to the ball which is why they give up so much underneath and still let Julio Jones get past them

someone rewind the Steeler-ravens game where the Steelers didn’t score a TD.
All this team needs is a pass rush and the defense will improve vastly. Might be time to sign the SEC defensive player of the year off the Cowboys squad and cut Bowers who may not be a….ahh never mind.
Bowers just simply has no heart or fight to plat this game at this level.

Every week some player has a career game vs this porous Bucs defense. This week it will probably be Heath Miller. Speaking of tight ends: what is the status of Sefarian-Jenkins? Wasn’t he supposed to be one of the triple towers that could simply outjump the D for the damn ball???? This ****ing team has more smoke and mirrors than anything Sam Wyche dreamed up in the Creamsicle uniforms and hell at least he did get the Yucs to 7-9 before he got canned for Dungy, I doubt Lovie could get 7 wins in 2 seasons considering he does not have a marquee defense to play into his system…..

S. Jenkins ankle got rolled up on while blocking. I’m guess 4-6 weeks but if u ask lovie he’ll say “he’s getting better” just like tedford. You know we can’t give away too many secrets we might give our opponents an advantage.

I thought it was designed to be a run defense and red-zone defense more than a pass defense.
Every player controls their gap and you stop the run. But as a pass defense it only works if you have strong pressure. Peyton Manning in that legendary comeback game and Carolina with the tight end 3 weeks ago showed how vulnerable it is to the pass.
