“Progress” Reported In McCoy Talks

See, there was good Bucs news over the past few days. You just were too busy crying to see it.
CBS Sports dove into the details of the Bucs working to re-sign Gerald McCoy and positive messages emerged.
Jason La Canfora did extensive reporting on the matter and how it relates to fellow manbeast Ndamukong Suh landing a new deal, as well. Both McCoy and Suh could become unrestricted free agents after the season.
La Canfora explains the Bucs have more than enough cash to comfortably sign McCoy and things are moving forward.
McCoy’s price tag also is hefty, but the Bucs spent a large part of the offseason shedding high salaries (Darrelle Revis, Donald Penn, etc), they don’t have a quarterback making anything more than back-up money, and if they draft one high in May — which seems like a certainty at this point — he will be a bargain as well. McCoy is without question the face of the franchise. The Bucs don’t have anyone to whom they still owe big chunks of money. They have about $30M in cap space next season and roughly $58M for 2016 projections, sources said, and have almost no players with big signing bonuses, either. So their cap prorations on their best players are manageable and all are essentially on year-to-year deals and easily released without cash or cap ramifications.
They’re well-positioned to take on a huge contract and, after looking like one of the worst teams in the NFL through three weeks, look like they will be in need of some positive news in 2014, too. Talks remain ongoing and progress is being made, sources said. McCoy counts $15M against this year’s cap (he makes $13M this season and Suh makes $12.6M), so his franchise tag would be more manageable, but that’s not the route either side wants to go in this matter.
Get it done, Bucs. Outside of making a blockbuster trade for a true franchise quarterback, Joe can’t imagine a better use of Team Glazer’s money.

Besides money…. what motivates a player? Pride, winning, loving your coaching staff and fellow players, trusting the front office to make the best choices for the team? Does Tampa offer all or some of these? Im worried McCoy wont be a Buc next season.

Well this understaffed team is 7 million under the cap as of this minute,
so that’s a start right? Hell, maybe we could use some ManU revenue

Glad to have him yes and he’s one of the best D tackles in the game and he’s the only individual showing consistent effort and ability. Good news but still doesn’t change the fact that we have an awful team so the news isn’t all that good. I’ll congratulate McCoy more if a report came out that he’s personally trying to teach Bowers something, anything to help this team.

I thought franchise tag lasted 2 years. I love McCoy but I’d rather just use franchise tag on him if its a 2 year deal. No guaranteed money. McCoy has been great but he’s missed a lot of games. I’d be reluctant to give a player big guaranteed money except a star qb. Check out Jj watt and Adrian peterson. How many games have they won lately. Great players but overrated value. Plus guys get hurt in nfl easy. I’d rather have depth.

There are two types of franchise tag designations: the exclusive rights franchise tag, and non-exclusive rights franchise tag:
An “exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams. The player’s team has all the negotiating rights to the exclusive player.
A “non-exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position for the previous year, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams. So other teams can negotiate long-term contract offers with the player, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Since GMC is higher than the top 5 avg in pay would get 120% of his money he is making this year which he accounts for $15 and change. So he would count for $18 million next season. If we did it again the following season $26 million.. We can lock him up easily for $16 a year…
Robert Quinn got a 4 year $66 million with $41 guaranteed with $30 of that coming out in the first 2 years of the contract… Little different numbers for McCoy though because he was drafted in 2010 (last year of high rookie salaries) he is currently already making $15 so he would be roughly… 5 year $82 million with roughly $50 guaranteed… Knowing how the Bucs do things most of his guaranteed money would be paid within the first 3 years…

Watt is represented by Tom Condon, which is part of CAA.
Suh is represented by Jimmy Sexton.
• His firm? CAA
McCoy is represented by Ben Dogra.
• His firm? Yep, you guessed it … CAA.
While Watt plays a different positions than Suh & McCoy, that’s probably around the same range both tackles would be trying to earn.
Only negative mark against McCoy is that he’s missed (**14) games due to torn biceps and most recently-a fractured hand.

I swear if the Bucs let McCoy walk in FA I’m going to be pissed. The man is the face of our franchise. Bucs need to extend both McCoy and David asap.
