So Far, Bucs Got “Bad Lovie”

Raheem Morris, move over. You did not have the worst-coached game in Joe’s Bucs-following memory. It just so happens to have been the work of Lovie Smith last night.
When milquetoast, velvety-voiced Jim Nantz drops the word “embarrassment” on you and it is not even the end of the third quarter, that takes the cake.
It pains Joe to type the above. Lovie is a good guy. And he sure as hell is a better coach than Raheem Morris. For whatever reason, his hand-picked team either has tuned him out already, or Lovie shouldn’t be dabbling in player evaluation.
Before last night’s gruesome display began, Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report wrote that, thus far, Team Glazer has hired “Bad Lovie,” not to be confused with “Good Lovie,” who somehow got to a Super Bowl with Rex Grossman at quarterback.
They have had enough of Bad Lovie in the first two weeks. Bad Lovie is predictable and conservative to a fault on both sides of the ball. Good Lovie is a detail-oriented franchise architect whose teams beat you with execution, not novelties. Bad Lovie does the same things over and over again and hopes they start working.
Lovie Smith can still lead the 0-2 Buccaneers to the playoffs this year. The NFC South is in disarray, with the New Orleans Saints squabbling on the sidelines, the Atlanta Falcons flip-flopping between amazing and unwatchable and Cam Newton suddenly leading his troops like Erwin Rommel.
The Buccaneers have the talent to compete under these conditions. But they need the best of their Lovie, the coach who tempers his traditionalism with an open mind, gets the most from the whole roster and takes an actual risk every few weeks or so.
After trying to sleep last night, Joe really doesn’t know what to say. It is so freaking sad that for two straight years, the beer hasn’t even gotten warm yet and the season is over.
Bucs fans are now in full-blown draft mode and it isn’t even the end of September. For the second depressing season in a row. That’s disgusting.

This was a total embarrassment. I love Lovie, he is the kind of coach you want to get behind. Maybe it is short term memory on my part, but I can’t remember a more embarrassing game in the past 5 years than this, at least for one being this early in the season. What the hell is going on?
I am done. I am not spending another wasted Sunday (or Thurs) supporting this crap. Best of luck to you Glazers! You’ve brought back the Yucs complete with ugly uniforms!!

We’re definitely in draft mode, I just don’t know if we’re 1 draft/offseason away. I mean, it didn’t look like we had one pro level player on that field.
I can’t even vent or get upset. I was sitting here trying to think of something that would express how I feel about the team and then it hit me that my inability to come up with something was actually how I feel. Numb. Disinterested. Over it.
I love football but I don’t want to watch the bucs anymore and I don’t have it in me to jump on another team’s wagon. This loss, and this season, has shown me what it means to feel truly deflated and defeated.

Atleast raheem Morris had an excuse while everyone is sitting there bashing him. You can’t say they had no talent on that team but say he’s a horrible coach…. Immature but still Dominick gave him nothing not even a d coordinator, no Gerald McCoy, no kind of safety or linebacker quality and also no pass rush
Lovie has no excuse in the world. Schiano was a garbage coach bit have him talent to work with. He’s got the players he’s got a good scheme he’s got the “coaches” this is the most talented we’ve been in almost a decade and come to find out lovie is just as stubborn no more stubborn than schiano. The season may not be over for the bucs but it is for a lot of fans including myself, I feel sorry for these players but I won’t support this filth.

Reset rosters after reset rosters due to poor drafting since Rich McKay left. I knew the team was dead in the water when they picked up “big” free agents I’d never heard of. The ones I did hear of gave me no confidence. You can only “coach up” so much.
Need a lot more draft picks. This team is at least 2 years behind the talent level needed to get 8 wins.

Media is clueless. Lovie great hire, bucs defense is definitely top notch. Just bad information. How is 56 points a really good defense. Oh yeah, they gave up 20 at home to backup qbs. At least we don’t have to hear anymore “Lovie treats these guys like men” and “Lovie knows how to get the best out of players”. These 3 games have been worse than watching last year. Hope Lovie can turn it around but wow that was the worst. Reminded me of end of Raheem’s tenure.

@meh – That would be a great philosophy if the ticket prices reflected that. I’m not in the area so it doesn’t effect me but I can sympathize with the fans who are being asked to pay full ticket prices for a bargain bin product. If they want to put out a sub-par product then they should charge appropriately.

He’s packed the Bucs with One Year Wonders and everyone’s asking “why do we suck?” Because Lovie sucks….
NO matter where he has been and no matter what capacity he has been there in, Lovie’s only successes have come when there was someone else either ultimately in charge or someone else making the personnel decisions…He has no concept of cause and effect, that is why he signs people like Michael Johnson, Josh McCown, Mike Jenkins, etc…
One thing I did notice was, as soon as Glennon took over, the offense seemed to have a calm come over it, I hate to wish bad things on people, but the best thing to happen last night was McCown getting injured…

I hated the Lovie hire when it happen and I hate it even more now. They can’t get rid of this guy fast enough. Even the 1976 expansion team never put on this bad of a performance or showed this lack of effort. This may be the worse team ever in the history of Tampa Bay Buccaneers and that’s saying something given our history. Why Lovie still has a job this morning is beyond me.

It took Rivera 3 years to get Carolina turned around. I really don’t wanna wait three years. I’m going to be watching more Lightning games this year. That was the worst football game I have ever watched. Do these guy’s even practice doing the week??????? I mean what do they do? Do they game plan at all?????? Obviously Atlanta game planned for us and saw our zone defense is so easy to pick apart they ran the same play all night against us in the pass game. I’m so disappointed as a fan I can’t even be mad anymore. It’s just pathetic. Even worse I remember typing this same thing when Raheem was coaching and I think this may be worse.

I thought Lovie was a defensive guru? If that’s the case his defense shouldn’t fall apart just because our pass rush hasn’t been all that so far.
Gerald McCoy’s contract will only rise the more losses we get. Without him we only have David and Verner on defense and last night showed how that worked out. Did Johnson play??
If McCoy’s agent doesn’t get him a minimum of $15 million a year he isn’t doing his job properly

Regardless of what it happens. They came out FLAT and got hit with a rampage and before they or even us could blink they were down 28. Not making excuses but ive been part of those games and coached those games . Trust it happens to the best and even the greatest . Next time you see the DENVER BRONCOS AND PEYTON MANNING ask them how it feels. The way you handle this is to forget it happened and come out next week and play . As men we all know we dont want to get thump in front of our wife and kids . So lets hope they feel the same way and respond in big way. Go bucs and GO GLENNON!!!!!!

Has there been a game yet this year where you can honestly say that the team took the field looking like they were ready to play. They pulled it together in the 3rd and 4th quarter a couple times but they’ve never come out ready to go. They’ve been flat since the opening whistle this season

McCoy will sign somewhere else, and so will David eventually. To star players that will jump ship because ownership can’t put together a good coaching staff or team. Looked so terrible last night that it’s not even funny, it’s a terrible joke of a football team. I Say, you know you have a bad team when you cheer for a first down. Yes, as a hapless Bucs fan I often cheer for first downs when we do get them. I feel bad for all the talented players that are ruining their careers on this team. What a joke.

Instead of going into free agency and getting quality we elected to get quantity. We’re trying to turn players that were backups into starters. LOVIE AND JASON that never works! They were backups for a reason.

Here’s a little secret: Lovie Smith is not that good a football coach and has very poor adaptation skills. He coached in Chicago at a time the NFC wasn’t that good (that was peak New England/Indianapolis time), in a particularly bad division (Lions sucked his entire time, Vikings weren’t much better), at a time before the NFL devolved into a passing first, passing second league. And even then, only made the playoffs 1 out of every 3 years. Comparisons to Andy Reid were laughable because in the same NFC, in a much tougher division, he made the playoffs 2 out of every 3 years.
Unless you have a couple great players in the secondary and a deep pass rush like Seattle, zone defense is dead in the NFL. It’s been figured out 3 times over. So that Lovie still believe he can force his version of football rather than adapt to the times is what will get him fired quickly. Social media makes fans angrier and more loudly heard than ever. And outside the sold out Green Bay game that’s a home game for them and not the Bucs, the stands figure to be barren for the rest of the year, as this team is coming back to Tampa 0-5.
Does anyone really trust Lovie to use a likely top 3 pick? If it were 2001 absolutely, because he knows that football. 2015? No thanks. The Bucs need to embrace the present and future and not a guy living in the past. The only way Lovie should keep his job after this year is if he shows dramatic changes in his coaching style.

Joe, this is as on-point a post as there has been about Lovie since his arrivial. Post Schiano, Lovie needed to bring CREATIVE stability to the organization. Instead, he has bailed water into an already sinking ship by shoe-horning an outdated philosophy of ‘simplify and execute’ on an outmatched group of players. All three losses have been inexcusable in terms of how they’ve been achieved. For one, McCown has no business starting in this league. 31 other teams /coaches figured that out a decade ago. Second, the mishandling of the OL/OG is unheard of. Lovie went into a season with an OL less proven than Wunsch, Middleton, Diaz, etc. Third, the NFL’s rules have changed in ways that render the best traits of the Tampa 2 dead–you can’t hit the QB or JWRs like you did in the 90s. Finally, his uber-conservative, dare I say, chicken sht handling of the Rams game was obvious to all. He lost his own bench, his team, the fans, the city by not playing to win…and the real shame is he didn’t realize it. The players laid down like dogs last night b/c they saw their coach do the same thing the Sunday before against the Rams. Lovie’s ina deep, dark hole and heading to the abyss. This team is very capable of going 0-16, 2-14 at best if he doesn’t change. It has to start w/the QB, then the defensive scheme…overt blizting isn’t the answer. Lovie, be creative and put these guys in the best position to succeed. Maybe it doesn’t matter. Maybe they saw fear in Lovie and there’s nothing but cold darkness ahead…

Nothing more needs to be said but here are a couple of points:
1 it’s early but if defense doesn’t get a clue soon Frazier has to go and Lovie take over defense
2 we need Tedford back arroyo/Lovie look lost in offense. If he’s not coming back soon fire him and find somebody who can coach offense
3 people should still back glazers and team. I k ow they’ve made bad decisions but they have spent money and made moves. Plus law of averages no team is bad forever see Seahawks and saints. Plus bad team is better than no team.

Lovie without Brian Urlacher was 12-21 in Chicago. That’s like going 6-10 for 2 years.
So when we talk about Lovie’s proven that he’s a winner etc., he hasn’t done it without a Hall of Famer in the all-important Mike position. And he didn’t draft Urlacher, he inherited him from the previous regime.
Give him talent and he can make it work, but it’s blatantly clear now that he has no eye for it himself.

Brent…easy to say, but for a few years in the late 90’s/ early 2000’s, it has been like about 40 years of having teeth pulled.
That was Lovies D..the same one he has run since the 90’s.
And a large percentage of our players lost their composure…their self discipline…their effort…I’ve rarely seen anything like that at the professional ranks…it was absolutely a disgrace.

There are so many areas to address on this team it is going to be hard to decide which one first.
I was fairly certain they were not ready but I wasnt prepared for this meltdown in all phases.

Lovie and Licht picked 30 of these guys, so it’s on them. A lot of us fans did not want another re-tread, I asked for an Offensive mind. IF,( BIG If) Tedford gets the O going, he will get a coaching gig elsewhere. Lovie is a defensive mind, well how about make some adjustments if you can’t run the Tampa 2. I really don’t know what to say, except that I’m done watching this dumpster fire for the 2014 season. Last night was a complete embarrassment up and down. I’ve been a fan for almost 20 years, and I’ve never seen a team get outplayed in every facet of the game. Each unit deserves an F- grade. Heads need to roll for this. Moreover, what is unfortunate is that this is only week 3, so it’s too early for that. This offense is atrocious, Josh McCown is a waste of money (called that when they first signed him) and the offense as a whole is a complete waste. YOU HAVE TWO 6’5 RECEIVERS, USE THEM.. Pass is under performing, big surprise. Somehow Daquan Bowers still manages to play on this roster, and that’s a complete joke in itself. The fact he hasn’t been cut is a testament to the incompetence surrounding One Buc Place. He is a waste of a jersey. I understand people keep saying this will take time, but I’m curious as to see what they have to say after last night, because it was a colossal step backwards. Whatever intimidation factor Lovie wanted to instill in these players is gone for the entire season. You might as well start looking towards the 2015 draft and pick a quarterback or defensive end in the 1st round, or I will not be a fan next year.

The “nonsense” I refer to is the Josh Freeman debacle, the handling of the MRSA situation, the 0-8 start, poor coaching, lying, calling Buc fans ignorant, etc. You may not like the fact that Schiano got fired but this stuff did happen and it was embarassing last year. Someone above mentioned Tedford; look I am sorry that he has health issues and had to have the angioplasty/stints but why is he the OC when he has not been able to even call a damn play since the season started. This is as bad as when the Bucs hired Jagodzinski as an OC and he did not even last through training camp. I really doubt if Tedford calling the plays would have helped last night, but perhaps he could’ve helped the Bucs at least get by the hapless St Louis Lambs. The only way that loss becomes positive is if it keeps the Bucs ahead of the Rams in the Mariota sweepstakes in next year’s draft as both team are bad and will need a QB in the draft unlike the other bottom feeders who will also be picking early like the Jags, Raiders and Browns….
