19 Sacks Have Buccaneers’ Attention

Various Bucs, including Lovie Smith, had plenty to say about defensive end Robert Quinn.
Bucs left tackle Anthony Collins earned his money Sunday doing a solid job against Carolina beat Greg Hardy. But it gets nastier this week with mighty Robert Quinn coming to town.
He’s younger, faster and meaner (but not to women), and he chalked up 19 sacks last season.
Last Sunday against the Vikings, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Quinn had four quarterback hits and two QB pressures, plus a roughing-the-quarterback penalty that was considered a bad call. They paint a picture of Quinn being hungry for a J.J. Watt contract.
Lovie Smith said yesterday that leaving Quinn on an “island” with a tackle all game is a recipe to allow seven sacks. So look for Bobby Rainey/Doug Martin (Mike James?) to offer plenty of help with Brandon Myers/Luke Stocker. Joe’s assuming tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins won’t play given that his bum ankle was in a walking boot yesterday at practice.

Wouldn’t that be a job for a fullback? Seems like we’d work Lane in to help out quite a bit with protection.

Yeah, Lane is almost OT sized. Not sure about his pass blocking skills though? Seriously hope that Martin doesn’t whiff this week, otherwise McCown is going to be picking up his teeth with broken fingers.

We saw one of the finest QB’s in history look like a HS QB last week. Tom Brady was completely ineffective, when his offensive line couldn’t give him time to set up, survey his options and hit the open receiver. That is exactly what happened to Josh here in Tampa Bay. The talented Bucs defense, on the other hand, offered no pressure, no takeaways and no splash plays.
Lets hope this was just a poor outing and, at least, one of those units start to show us much, much more this week.

Does anybody else think having Lane in the backfield would help the protection scheme? He is not explosive as a pass option but at least could catch swing passes. As opposed to whiffing on rushers. Think Rocky Blier.

Didn’t we just pay Collins big time starting LT money? This is a tacit admission that they effed up the talent eval on Collins too. You almost cant blame Collins for not being worth the money. It’s not his fault these guys decided to way overpay him for having done virtually nothing in this league as starting LT. What a joke!

You can think what you want. I’m not trying to be the thought police. I’m just curious, were you this pissed in September 2009? Because, Dominik started off much worse, and already screwed the pooch with the franchise QB first round pick.
These guys walked into a complete mess. I, at least, waited a few seasons to see if Dominik hung himself first. Which, of course, he did.
Were you calling for Raheem’s and Mark’s heads after Dallas embarrassed them 34-21? Or any of the other 13 total losses that season?
Just curious. It just seems like a lot of people gave the last regime a LOT more leeway than these guys are being given. Which is odd to me.

Is the injury to Seferian-Jenkins to the same spot he had a problem with in preseason? Did it happen on the Ist down catch early in the game? How bad is the injury? Are we talking half the season or more. What a bummer! The rookies are falling like pushed dominoes.

Love and Warrick- I am not calling for the coaches head. I am calling for accountability of this atrocious talent evaluation. I did not agree with the vet purge in 2009 but yes I was willing to give Morris and Dom a chance because they were both rookies. I also appreciated them taking a chance on a franchise QB. Something this regime ran away from with the mediocre McCown. Why don’t don’t you stop attacking me and start paying attention to the football. The things I am saying are not that outlandish. You just don’t want to believe it. Put your head back in the sand if you don’t like differing points of view.

Collins stonewalled Hardy all game long. He earned his paycheck. Stop bitching about things you know nothing about. Actually watch the game instead of running your annoying mouth for a change.

Again, you are missing the point and dodging the issue (as usual). He stone cold stopped Greg Hardy, one of the best DE’s in the game. Period. You keep saying he needs to show you something when in fact he showed up big time. He already showed you. That’s the problem with chronic bitchers and complainers…they are never satisfied no matter what happens.

FlFanBoyinDallas- no you are missing my point…he is a high paid LT that is paid handsomely to block RDEs. He blocked Greg Hardy on Sunday. Great. Why can’t he be expected to block Quinn? That’s his job! “Lovie Smith said yesterday that leaving Quinn on an “island” with a tackle all game is a recipe to allow seven sacks.” That speaks volumes for both Collins and Lovie.

The bucs came out flat sunday for sure, Lovie said before the game they did not need a pep talk, well then just keep showing them the tape of the panthers laughing and joking at the bucs team, Ya in our house, I keep saying it GET EM GOIN LIGHT A BIG A$$ FIRE UNDER THEM THERE BUCKS ..OH YA @ lovie have our team comming out of the tunnel fighting mad..

On what planet did I attack you? I’m simply noticing that people are treating two similar situations completely differently. The reality is, in 2009 and in 2014, we have brand new coaches and GMs. Both have the same responsibilities: Win games.
So, if they are rookie coaches and GMs, they get a pass? OK. Note: Licht is also a rookie GM (but, by all means lets not give him the same fair shake Dom got)
And, if they actually do something completely risky like mortgaging the franchise on a first round QB to a five year, pre rookie salary cap charge, it’s ok? And, we all saw how that pick completely decimated the team over half of a decade.
On the other hand, the new guys apparently didn’t like the QBs coming out this year, so they signed a vet to a completely low 2 year non guaranteed contract, that’s much easier to handle, if he tanks. And that’s much worse than drafting Freeman?
Ok, cool, I just wanted to understand the logic in some your thinking. I still don’t see any logic in it, but, at least I know what kind of thought process some of you are going through.
Just remember: “It’s all about #5” in 2012, and that’s after 48 games of him showing how terrible he was.

I expect to see a lot of stacked 2TE sets even on passing downs just for this purpose. Counting on Martin to slow Quinn is another recipe for disaster that I am sure Lovie is aware of.

Dallas truth be told Quinn needs to be double triple teamed as much as possible regardless of who the tackles is.

No LT in the NFL right now can block Quinn all by themselves consistently all game long. Just because Collins is paid doesn’t automatically make him invincible. Your expectations are too high. Collins did not receive a massive contract; he is paid about like a middle-of-the-road LT. Expecting him to dominate every DE in the league is mindless ignorance at its finest.
