Mike Jenkins’ season is over
In some circles, it is believed the Bucs lost a cornerback this morning. Joe thinks otherwise.
In the early days of the Lovie Smith Administration, if Joe sensed any player was Lovie’s pet, it was the notorious Mike Jenkins.
Run out of Dallas and left along the side of the road by the mighty Raiders, Lovie decided to rescue Jenkins from unemployment and did his best to force Jenkins into the starting lineup.
Jenkins, who missed virtually all of training camp and preseason with an injury, and with only a handful of healthy days to prepare himself for the regular season, found himself hurt again, this time, per Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk, with a pectoral injury. Today he placed on the injured reserve list. His season is over.
Joe hates to see anyone hurt. Jenkins though, when healthy, hurt the Bucs.
Joe has no earthly idea what Lovie saw in Jenkins that the rest of the football world didn’t. He was run out of Dallas for not just getting roasted time and again by the likes of Vince Young (of all people!) but for gutless tactics like pulling up on tackles near the goal line.
The two men instrumental in seeing Jenkins replaced and released were none other than Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli, as Dallas transitioned to a Tampa-2 style defense.
Second-year corner Johnthan Banks has done absolutely nothing to get jumped over by Jenkins. Banks is a steady if not good young cornerback. The future of the Bucs.
Jenkins future is coaching high school football players how not to tackle.

The defense sucks again. I tried to tell people to stop anointing them as a top 10 D until they can prove it. No DEs, no MLB, no CB. It’s going to be a long season. Pretty soon Lovie will start blitzing every down and running stunts just like Schiano did to try and cover these gaping holes.

Good take, Jenkins was an impediment to Banks progress.
Cant understand why Lovie was adamant to start him.

BFFL, the defense will get better. Top 10? Doubtful IMO. Top 15 at best.

The downside is there aren’t many great options to take Jenkins place. There’s not much on the depth chart beyond Verner and Banks. Maybe this will be the opportunity one of the younger corners needs to take the next step.

Didnt see what mike did so bad sunday? Had a guy make play of the week on him? He shoulda turned his head but he had benjamin blanketed and benjamin along w every nfl player except the ones in that gawd awful bucs uniform make plays

We had the best cornerback in the NFL but we also have a coach who was incapable of figuring out how to use him.

Obviously, Lovie Smith knows more about NFL football than I do, but I would be pretty unhappy and asking for a trade if I was someone like Johnthan Banks, Mike Glennon, or anyone behind Oneil Cousins on the depth chart. These guys should be given an opportunity to go to a team where they have an opportunity to earn playing time based on their merit rather than who gives Lovie the best locker room reach-around or whatever the hell kind of asinine criteria is used to set the depth chart.
On an unrelated note, does anybody else feel like Jeff Tedford is having second thoughts about taking a job from a guy who doesn’t believe the offensive line should work as a unit and should just be composed of what he considers to be the best 5 individual performers – all of which pieces are interchangeable without any regard for continuity, per his own admission. Doesn’t it seem a bit more than coincidental that the ONLY football coach I have ever heard espouse such a theory has a long, sordid history of sub-par O-Line play?

Verner was a strength, Jenkins was a weakness. Banks is not a weakness. Following logic, Banks should be starting in place of Jenkins. How can a fan figure this out but Lovie cannot?

I know it’s only the first game and I hate to admit this but the defense looked better under Schiano.

I can tell you what Lovie saw. Jenkins is wearing #24. Lovie was confused. Lovie still thought that was Revis thats why he played….SMH…Im glad Jenkins is out. Im not glad he’s hurt. Just glad to know he wont be starting opposite Verner anymore. All he had to do was turn his dam head on that TD and it would have been a pass break up for sure. I didn’t say INT because Jenkins would have dropped it. Regardless, Banks is back in and that should help the secondary.

I agree with you Joe, Jenkins was an enigma at best. There’s some roster move that I don’t get.. It almost felt like it was our 5th preseason game last week. I think they still try to figure out some players and give then playing time when the situation allows it

So Joe, you don’t know more about football then Lovie Smith! I was watching Jenkins early in the game and he was flying to the ball a lot. Yeah he did not get his head turned around in time on the one TD catch but he was in great position, it happens. Bucs coaches are going to play the best players and Jenkins is better then Banks right now or he would not have been playing.

I like Jenkins but I prefered Banks over Jenkins. Hope Jenkins gets better and hope Banks thrives

This was a gain not a loss. The way Jenkins covered on the last TD was indicative of his talents, his eye was never on the ball.
