McCown’s Obsessive Postgame Ritual

It’s good to have a short memory as a professional athlete. Good or bad, put it in the rearview mirror and move on to the next game or the next play.
Bucs quarterback Josh McCown, however, operates with a unique spin on that wisdom.Speaking on Total Access last night on WDAE-AM 620, McCown explained how his postgame Panthers ritual kept him glued to a video screen.
“Watching the Panthers game, I’ve probably seen it, you know, 10, 12 times at least. So you kind of go through those things and clean up the mistakes and things that you could have done better and all that. And then move on.” McCown said. “Then [I spent] most of the rest of the day Monday watching St. Louis tape and get ready for those guys.”
Man, watching a game a dozen times is obsessive. Joe’s assuming McCown was only watching the offensive plays, but that sure feels like an awful lot of scrutiny in 24 hours. This is typical for McCown, he said.
Later in the show, McCown talked about how he was awakening in bed thinking about the ugly interception he had when he fumbled picked it up and threw an ill-advised pass towards Mike Evans.
Joe’s sure many Bucs fans had the same nightmare.

Every NFL QB (and most backups) engage in this level of obsessive film study.
I’m sure McCown is a hard worker, but that hard work hasn’t translated to results on field for the majority of his career.

They spent weeks preparing for Carolina. I’m not impressed with anyone putting in lots of hours if it doesn’t result in a good product. I can watch 10 hours of someone painting a picture, doesn’t mean I’m a good painter now. If it doesn’t translate in to results then he would be better served just punching the clock after his 8 hours and spending that time with his family.

Joe, wanted to get your thoughts on the two defensive line moves yesterday. Though former Bucs Means and Solomon are back-ups, Solomon was on rotation during last Sunday’s fiasco. Do you see yesterday’s transactions as a panic move?

Maybe the Bucs should do something similar to what the Boston Red Sox did when they won their first (in a long time) World Series a few years back and everyone do a shot of their favorite alcohol prior to the game.

@Joe: You sure McCown said he was throwing a pass to Mike Evans after the fumble? In the post game PC he said he wanted to throw the ball away above Evans’ head so that he does not get called for grounding. Even watching those replays made me feel the same as the 2nd time he swung his arm hard in Evans’ direction, but there was no velocity as he took a hit while throwing it away.
It does not make any difference at this point, but that small difference in trying to complete a bad pass vs trying to throw the ball away makes his error less egregious. He was thinking right during the post game PC when he said he was more disappointed with the 1st turnover than 2nd.

What good is being obsessive to fix your mistakes? Surely he knew flailing the ball around like a left handed girl was the wrong thing to do, but he just kept on doing it. Don’t need tape for that!!

@Joe Dunn: The problem with performances like last Sunday is that those who were at home watching, were most likely thinking to themselves:
“I’m glad I’m not there…..”
I know people who went who told me “we wish we didn’t..”
Therein lies a major Buccaneer dilemma, they had to GIVE AWAY tickets to encourage folks to show up, then they proceeded to lay a giant egg…..
It would be like opening a new restaurant, having a crowd show up, then the food and the service are awful.
The great thing about watching at home is that you can do chores while NOTHING happened for three quarters!
Hopefully they can play at least two quarters on Sunday, that would be a major improvement.

Tom, those people who said “glad I’m not there” or who left early…damn near witnessed a comeback of the aged when McCown got his ish together. Let’s keep that momentum going into next week. I don’t see anybody calling for Bobby Rainey or Dashon Goldson’s head.

Exactly @Brian nobody will single out how McCown went 19-27(what!?)in the second half on his way to leading 2 TD drives, nor will the same negative Nancy’s grasp the fact that it’s probably less likely he start anothe game off in opening weekend fashion. Best thing about our team this season, is we’ve got what it takes to make a post-bye run, because this team isnt peaking anytime soon.

I would give him a quarter because besides the two Curly or Moe plays, he didn’t see and when he did see the wide open receivers for the most part his trow wasn’t there.
He can watch it a 100 times but if he can’t perform what good is it?
Yes it was his first game and his 12th season.

When your time of possession is so short, it does not take long to watch the entire game from the offenses point of view. Fast forward thru huddles, and I’ll bet its a total of 10 minutes of actual game play.

It’s not so much about his going 19-27 or throwing 2 TD’s….it’s about his God awful decision making and leaving all the throws he should have made to wide open receivers on the field. V-Jax and Evans were running free numerous times with no one in the same zip code. McCown held the ball way too long. Yes, he improved in the second half and he could turn out to be the second coming of Joe Montana for the rest of the year but he didn’t give me any reason to be anything but frightened until I see different.

Can we please be a little patient with this guy, he will be absolutely fine. There are no better options out there right now. You’re eventually going to have to draft a QB with a 1st or 2nd round pick and groom them. We aren’t there yet but we will be!

Some of the greatest athletes are great because of their OCD. They strive for perfection on every play, every drill, every time the do something related to their craft. These are the guys that make it big, assuming they have enough talent to allow their OCD to be on display. The great QBs are usually pretty darn OCD. The ones that wash-out, definitely aren’t.

So many titbabies around here.
Josh made a couple dumb mistakes.
So did a great many QBs, including Brady.
We still were within seconds of beating the NFC south champs, and top 3 defense in the league.
Relax. With all the new players and coaches, you had to know that this was gonna take Time.
McCown actually looked good on the move.
Haven’t seen that here in years.
I’ll be there again this weekend, and expect the team to play even better.
The only real worry is the D-line
