Bucs C Evan Dietrich-Smith discusses the Sunday debacle

The new Bucs sure seemed like the old Bucs Sunday, at least for three quarters. Horrible quarterback play. Zero pressure on the quarterback. Inconsistent blocking on offense.

For Bucs center Evan Dietrich-Smith, the offensive line needs only to look in the mirror, but it will get better.

“I think, for the most part, it’s really just about us as a unit,” EDS said. “It doesn’t matter who we play: if we don’t take care of our business as a group – starting with us, not who we’re playing against – then it’s not going to work. You can play against the worst team or you can play against the best team, but if we don’t play well as a group, it’s not going to matter what happens on Sunday because nobody is going to be able to do anything.”

The fourth quarter, the new Bucs sure looked like the new Bucs. Different. Energized. Dare Joe say, efficient? They scored two touchdowns and were in position to win the game when Hawk Goldson dropped a sure pick-six.

EDS said the Bucs came alive, in short, due to pride.

““All I know is that I didn’t want to get out of there with a goose egg on the board,” EDS said. “It’s a pride thing and I thought that we just started making plays. Guys were running and catching the ball, we were protecting, we got some things going, got a couple of long drives and we were able to sustain and we scored some touchdowns. Like I said, we played bad for three quarters and it didn’t look right, but we still fought the whole way through and made sure that we didn’t give up there at the end thinking these guys beat us. It’s one of those things where you’ve got to play every snap until the clock strikes zero and I thought we did a good job of fighting and getting ourselves back into a situation where we could possibly go win it.”

You know what, this sounds great, but how about showing pride earlier in the game and taking a lead? Granted, it is hard to do that when your quarterback is playing as reckless with the ball as a child with a box of matches.

If the “Fourth Quarter Josh” McCown plays like that most of the game, that would take care of a lot. If “Three Quarters Josh” is the norm, then fans may want to either give up drinking, or try to hide under their seats the way dogs cower under beds during lightning storms.

    We will win.

I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!

I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!!

The gods will not let us lose as the King of Judah is being honored!!!

    Derrick Brooks= Prophet

  3. jo_mama Says:

    Talk is cheap.

Why did you play poorly for 3 qtrs and play someone good for 1?

It’s either coaching, players or execution? Or The other team may be better.

Were are the the bucs going to be when Cam newton is healthy?

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

What the hell was that all about?

  5. MR. T Says:

I fully expect they will play better this next game and we will notch our first W

  6. RastaMon Says:

Joe could do a historical search starting with Ring Of Honor games…but going back to other reunion honorary games when great Bucs were honored…..I was a sucker too…the current teams played with NO extra pride or inspiration……they flopped a huge %

  7. Ray Rice Says:

EDS looks like a dude who got paid this summer for not ever doing anything. His former QB masks all of his lines’ deficiencies. He even calls the checks at the line. EDS you did the same thing I did and had them all believing in you. Shame on you. #RayRice

  8. DallasBuc Says:

“I think, for the most part, it’s really just about us as a unit,” EDS said.
Actually EDS, it’s really about your oline and therefore your QB and RB getting their asses kicked. Sick of all the sugar coating.

  9. Rrsrq Says:

EDS will become the leader of this offense. Mark the tape. Yeah, I said it. Best center in the division, lol.

  10. Bucs Fan #237 Says:

Watch the replay EDS. You let McClown get hit waaaaaayyyyy too often.

Although, the offensive plays probably should have been adjusted since the oline couldn’t stand up to the Carolina Defense.

  11. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Joe did you just say fans should give up drinking? So giving up drinking is bad?

    LOL

  12. buc4lyfe Says:

That’s it huh….. I’m ready for more than good reading material, put it all out on the field and play hard and your pride won’t be so shattered. Tired of the talk

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    “Derrick Brooks= Prophet”

Teacherman is that the same prophet that predicted the Bucs would beat the Panthers?

As a Buc fan, yes a looongtime fan. The 4 words I have heard the most regarding our Bucs over the years Joe mentioned in this article. I’m at the point where I loathe those 4 words these days. I wonder if I left them out of my post if anyone could find what those 4 words are above in the article. Okay here they are. Tell me if you agree.

    “It Will Get Better.”

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that over the last oh 3 DECADES I could buy my own NFL team.

Instead of It’s A Buc’s Life. Maybe the new slogan should read. “Just Give Us More Time” or those dreaded 4 words, “It Will Get Better”. Then put a Bucs logo next to it and plaster on the front of RJS.

  14. FloridaGirl Says:

Great…..another inept ‘Three quarters Josh’ who becomes a hero in the fourth quarter. Thought we got better at quarterback??? Wait, let’s just keep trusting the Bucs organization. Ugh

  15. DB55 Says:

    Buc1987 – points

  16. DB55 Says:

So for those of you who don’t know wth I’m talking about when I say “points”. It’s a reference to a tv show called @midnight that come on after Colbert. They read stuff from the internet and make jokes about it. The comedian with the best jokes gets points.

  17. Soggybottom Says:

We could just do what the Cowboys did when things were not going there way =

  18. OB Says:

    Joe

Hopefully the QB will not be deer in the headlights for 3+ quarters again and has figured out how to release the ball in a timely manner. The OL was against the 2nd best defense in the league last year and did well all things considering. Why we only give the ball once to a back that went 54 yards on his only carry only you can explain. The defense must have been hungry because they were out to lunch for the most part.

We know that can do it, they just have to do it.

  19. ForeverBuc Says:

DB55…I’ve never seen the show, but I got what you meant.

  20. RastaMon Says:

Us is that an acronym for U Suck !

  21. SteveK Says:

    Buc1987,

What’s up brother? What a craptavular performance we put forth this weekend.

We need to throw Glennon to the wolves of McCown gets poopy pants again.

We need to see what we have in Glennon, and I believe Glennon will be a good NFL starter in time.

    I
Can’t wait til we either win someone games, or we get to watch the cannon prove a Joe and a 620 radio jockey WRONG.

  22. Architek Says:

No one is buying what anyone at One Buc is selling until they consistently become a predictable product.

WE SEE AND BELIEVE THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON THIS TEAM AND ORGANIZATION.

  23. Architek Says:

Oh LORD – queue the MGM!!!

My God I’m so sick of you Glennon Huggers!

  24. Capt. Blighe Says:

Before you guys start predicting wins think about what Robert Quinn and the rest of the Ram DLine is going to to these buc lineman with McClown holding the ball all day. Bucs lose 21-10

  25. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Anyone have any info on former Bills DE Jacquies Smith who was claimed by the Bucs this afternoon?

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Welcome back, Buc1987, if you see this.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

LOL thanks everyone. Yah I see it Bonzai.

  28. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I hope Mike Glennon does prove the naysayers wrong. Of course, I am one of the naysayers.

If Josh McCown has 2-3 more outings like this Sunday, I may want Glennon in there. If for no other reason, so that he can prove himself to either be bad or to be good. Just so there is no question and we can draft a QB if needed.

  29. kevin Says:

I hope allows Tedford to play his offense with aggressive playcalling. Had we took some more shots and not ran it up the middle on second and nine. Defense and o line were not great but could have been much worse. I put this game on mccown martin and playcalling more than anyone else. Martin taking the least of the three and mccown taking the most heat…

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Welp Bonzai I have this new approach when it comes to Glennon. He showed no signs of being elite, but to me he showed signs of being adequate. I know, I know most of us fans don’t want adequate.

Was Br-ad John-son elite or adequate I forget?

It’s been discussed over and over on MG8, but that’s my stance. I think he can develop into an adequate QB.

McCown on the other hand that train already left the station long ago.

  31. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I guess “Tape Don’t Lie”. Solomon is gone to make room for new DE Smith.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

@Kevin…I put the entire blame on Lovie Smith.

  33. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Rah, Schiano, Lovie…never changes, its always the same. Mediocre talent, mediocre coaching…disappointed fans. Its not just EDS scooter..its about the 950,000 people in the greater Tampa Bay Area.

    DO YOUR FREAKING JOB!!!!!!

  34. billy buckaroo Says:

McCown would not have been so reckless if he would have had more than microseconds to do something.
Lovie gave him a line to play with at the last microsecond
The plays called had limited chance of success
The line gave him a microsecond to make a decision
    He made poor decisions
All of this combined for disaster but it started with Lovie and Licht and just snowballed with the rest of them

Name the starting offense line and let em play together instead of looking over their shoulder

  35. Biff Barker Says:

Solomon isn’t going anywhere. We’ve got two extra O lineman, of dubious skills BTW, and zero returners.

Sorry, I’m not a big Rainey fan. His fumble was sudden death last week.

  36. Incognito Says:

    @ buc1987 I thought you were banned.

  37. Incognito Says:

    Be patient
    Give us some more time
    It will get better
    Blah blah blah

  38. swaggy64 Says:

To me, this game demonstrates the importance of continuity in the NFL. Carolina has been in the same defensive system since Rivera got there, all the while stockpiling decent talent to serve it every year, with the additions of the last two years, particularly Luke Kuechly, vaulting them to the elite level. Their offense, while not elite, is capable and tends to avoid turning the ball over. Meanwhile, the Bucs were trying to install new systems on both sides of the ball this offseason. It didn’t help that our 0-cor was unavailable most of the week leading to the game. The part that disturbed me was the lack of pressure on D. The Panthers 0-line should have been their weakest link, and it bothers me we couldn’t take advantage.

  39. Owlykat Says:

Be aware the year the Buc’s won the Super Bowl they lost their first game, looked lousy, and did not have a chance to win in the end. Our record is the same as the Patriots, Saints, Ravens, and Chargers! But the Broncos lost their first four games the season before Payton, and still made the playoffs and beat the World Champion Steelers and set NFL records for most long passes completed. So how did they do that? They started a QB who had great intangibles and made the whole Offense better with his presence. He had such a determination to win he could change the momentum by himself and they won seven NFL games in a row right after losing the first four games. He lives now in Jacksonville and wants a shot to do it again. And he would get along fine with Lovie’s personal beliefs. Get Tebow in here to learn our system now before we lose our first four games. Licht would like the value too and the fans are long overdue for a winner. Trade Glennon to Dallas.

  40. Pickgrin Says:

@Owlykat – in 2002 the Bucs lost their 1st game to the Saints with 2 minutes remaining in overtime. So how could they “not have a chance to win in the end”???

And get real – the Bucs are not going to sign Tebo(w) – nor is any other NFL team. He is not good enough to be an NFL quarterback. Period. End of story. Why do you keep bringing this up?
