McCown’s Bumbling Irked Lovie

Joe has to give Lovie Smith credit. The Bucs head coach made no excuses for the terrible performance of his team, specifically the offense, for the first three quarters of today’s debacle loss to the Stinking Panthers.
In particular, Lovie was none too pleased at the careless if not irresponsible way Bucs quarterback Josh McCown handled the ball. He looked more like a skittish high school sophomore than a 35-year old veteran of the NFL battles.
“We’d like to have a couple of those balls back, especially the one where he fumbled it,” Lovie said. “Sometimes, you just have to take a negative play and not, you know, make a bad decision and give the ball up.
“Those plays hurt us. So [McCown], along with the rest of the team, didn’t do what we needed to do early.”
The only quarterback Joe can think of that regularly succeeded into turning nothing into something was Brett Favre. But he, too, got burned a lot by pulling stunts while forcing plays.
Joe has it on good authority that Farve suffered from acid reflux today watching McCown.
Joe just could not believe what he saw McCown doing. Joe has seen his share of high school football and you would be hard-pressed to watch a team’s quarterback try to pull off the shenanigans in one full season that McCown attempted in three quarters today.
Lovie is big on takeaways and turnover margin. If McCown keeps this up, the Bucs are going to have to climb out of a lot of holes this season and Joe dares suggests Lovie’s desired takeaway margin is going to be far, far, far from his goal.
It saddens Joe that an 11-year veteran quarterback of the NFL has to be told “live to fight another down.” That’s generally reserved for junior high school quarterbacks.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a QB pull the ole empty hand throw/fumble, recover, and then throw an interception all in the same play.

McCown isn’t a game manager folks. Don’t be fooled by the Bucs rhetoric. What we saw today is what he does the moment things get a little nervous. I’m not part of the MGM. But I’d rather have Captain Checkdown than a guy who single-handedly took the QB position back 20 years today.

And yes, if Glennon were playing today they would’ve won. That sounds lame, but seeing all the point McCown handed the Panthers I think it’s actually quite likely. And I don’t care much for Glennon either.

Some believe Licht’s stated desire to sign “value” free agents is code for inexpensive/non-big-name players; others believe “value” is merely a buzzword that means absolutely nothing and, at most, is an early negotiating tactic directed at agents who might think a new Bucs regime will overpay.
The reality is nobody knows what’s in Licht’s head when he speaks of “value.”
It appears to mean the opposite in Bizarro-Licht-lovie world. Up is down, in is out. Pay 10 million for a 35 year old career back up rather than pay 2.565 million for a 31 year old career back up. No wait, Anderson did start in Az and Clvd.

I think McCown really thought he could just throw the ball up and our 67 rcvs would hat catch it. You gotta throw it for your feet about 2.3 seconds after the snap. I know I don’t know football but that’s what the good QBs do so I say try that. #ballsecurity

Scariest part of the press conf is that lovie actually believes we did something at the end of the game. The preseason spoke volumes this should come as no surprise.

DB55 – did you really say that we didn’t get much from McCoy other than a clutch sack? What? He had 8 solo tackles. He’s a DT and had 8 solo tackles including the sack. Oh, and if you watched the trenches, you would’ve seen that he was double-teamed on most passing downs. In the game I watched, he showed up big time.

McCoy was the ONLY player that played well on defense. Some played okay, but McCoy did everything he could. Our ends did absolutely nothing, and they had nothing but 1 on 1’s all game long. The RB’s weren’t even looking at them in pass protection. At least make the QB uncomfortable in the pocket!

You are what your record says you are. Anyone that knows anything about statistics would know McCown’s 2013 season was a fluke. He was fully exposed today. Maybe it was nerves but more than likely this is the real Josh. If so, bring on The Cannon.

WHY are some media types willing to forgive and forget a piss poor performance by the 35 year old career back up journeyman bust who has sucked his whole ccareer yet a rookie who played average under a coaching staff who couldnt make an adjustment to save their jobs shouldnt be anything more than a bench warmer. You can’t “force” people to work together. That’s ludicrous.
As for Lovie, it’s one game. Slow your roll just a little. I’m pissed too, but give me a break with the overreaction! We got beat by a good football team. Make no mistake about that. That is a physical, punishing football team that is going to be a tough win for every team in the NFL. We looked horrible in almost all facets of the game, yet somehow had a chance to pick un an undeserved win. We have talent on this team, but talent doesn’t always equal wins. Unless you have a really good QB (which we obviously do not), we aren’t going to be the 2002 Buccaneers overnight. Calling Licht a “lapdog” GM doesn’t seem to fit anything I’ve ever read about the guy. Just because Lovie has final say over the roster (which really boils down to the final 3 or 4 guys on the roster) doesn’t mean Licht is a lapdog.

Hawaiian- first thing is I respect your takes and appreciate your critisism. I know you shoot straight and give sht about my bucs. That said, I’m not sure why you quoted “forced” when I never said or implied any sort of forced relationship. Missed something I guess. It’s late.
About Licht, I believe that Lovie has had an outsized role in the GM duties based on much of the unfortunate talent evaluation that has resulted in today’s performance. Every interview I hear with Licht it sound very co-dependent and almost like he is taking cover under “Lovie”. HC doesn’t sound like that towards his GM. It’s all very deferential and one-sided.
We may have had a chance to win that game but we didn’t face a healthy Cam who would have embarrassed us like he has never done before.

If our backup qb, poor d-ends, bad safties and average mlb/casillias can hold the panthers to 17 points than the Bucs have nothing to worry about. the arrow is moving upward, trade some players and draft well with the 5-11 record and all is well. 5-11 is not bad and dare I say should be wanted by fans because if this scrub team gets an 8-8 record or better than our draft position will hurt the club.

McCown was Nervous. It happens. It won’t happen again. I’ve seen it in many starting QBs on opening day. As a matter of fact, Tom Brady did some similarly weird things today.
We saw good and bad.
And that’s what you would expect from a completely rebuilt team.
McCown proved he is dangerous on the Run- huge improvement over the Statue.
Rainey can run!
Evans and ASJ can be good players immediately
Secondary played well.
Bad
Martin cannot run effectively- don’t know what happened- but last year wasn’t a fluke- he’s lost it.
Line needs improvement on run blocking- big time
Our DEs cannot rush the QB
Barron is still wandering around clueless
Foster can’t get deep enough in coverage, to play MLB in this defense
All fixable. 15 games is a looong time. They will find their rythme, and fix their problems.

No he won’t make idiotic turnover like Mccown did but he won’t do anything at all to get a win because he’s scared to make mistakes, he couldn’t even affect the score in preseason against back up talent which is why he’s a back up, he throws accurate check downs, he does that when he gets nervous and feels the rush which is why he gets the ball out to fast ALL the time. He sucks just like Mccown when he’s under pressure.
