Glennon: No Talk Of QB Change

It was near the end of the third quarter. The Bucs offense was dreadful beyond words. Josh McCown had been so careless with the football that even Brett Farve was screaming from his Mississippi home about McCown’s inability to protect the ball.
The stunts McCown pulled would have resulted in a high school sophomore quarterback getting his arse chewed out if not benched — and for good reason — much less a 35-year old veteran of NFL circles.
So when McCown dropped the football, picked it up, and in desperation threw the ball to Brandon Myers to save a tackle for loss, which ended up being his second grotesque interception of the day, Joe Twittered that McCown should be pulled.
After all, Joe saw Trent Dilfer benched for doing less than the tomfoolery McCown was trying to pull. This was the first time since Dilfer played that Joe can ever remember a starting Bucs quarterback should be benched mid-game.
After that interception, Joe monitored the Bucs bench, waiting for the hero of the Mike Glennon Mob, Mike Glennon himself, to start warming up.
Glennon never took off his Bucs cap and, instead, seemed to encourage McCown to play better. Later in the locker room after the game, Glennon said that’s exactly what he was doing and there was zero discussion of him going into the game.
“None of that,” Glennon said. “Josh did a great job of getting us back in the game.”
Joe has to be fair. Glennon is right. McCown looked so pathetic through the first three quarters and something clicked in the fourth quarter for him. And, in turn, for the Bucs, as they launched an impressive comeback.
Glennon said his chat with McCown after McCown’s gruesome last pick was nothing out of the ordinary. Typical quarterback talk, talking about both the offense and the defense as usual.
McCown “showed he could come back,” Glennon said.
McCown later said the loss Sunday was “on me.”

What Clicked for Mccown was the Panthers went to Prevent with a 3 score league …wait till the Rams get him next week .

That “comeback” was pure charity by the Panthers. It was 100% prevent defense.

McCown was doing that crap all preseason. He panics when pressured, has no technique for getting rid of the ball in a safe manner to avoid a sack. I honestly would rather see Glennon in there to see if he can grow into something better.
I think McCown being replaced before mid season is inevitable. He has been in this league way too long for the nonsense he pulled tonight.

possibly the most disappointing Bucs performance since Dec. 1995 when I thought the Bucs were moving to Baltimore and they dropped a dismal game to the Lions.

I was there and it was brutal….one thing I did notice ..was there were 2 guys with orange sleeves….appearing to signal plays or information…these two were really animated….odd thing was…McClown nor anyone of the Bucs offense was ever looking at them…stirred visions of Sam Wyche…too clever for his own good….WTF was that JOE ?

The problem is McClown doesn’t have any real competition. Yes Glennon probably has a higher football IQ but is completely immobile. Unfortunately McClown is the lesser of 2 evils. If we had a better protection up front if probably lean toward Glennon.

I know 1st impressions in this world mean a lot but let’s not get ahead of ourselves & let’s be more realistic!…the Panthers have if not the best 1 of the top 3 defenses in the NFL…let’s give things some more time before we start jumping off bridges & cutting our wrist!…
2nd if you guys no anything about the cover 2 or Tampa 2 D is they don’t care about yds in between the the 20s on each end of the field…@ one point the D was on the field 3x the amount of the Panthers D…w/ that being said I think they played well…Joe mentions Johnson but I mean most throws were quick throws!…our D was a B- due to not getting any turnovers + sorry ass Jenkins giving up the big TD (God I don’t know what coaches see in this guy)…Anderson was 40% on 3rd downs which is pretty good & we handled the running game alright…I say take a deep breath, take shot & let’s get ready for the Rams D!

The come back was not impressive! The panthers let of the gas pedal! If you thought the comeback was impressive, then no wonder some of you thought josh freeman was a “franchise QB”!

There is a reason McCown has been a back up for the majority of his career it is simple h is a back-up why Lovie think he going to catch lightening in a bottle I have no clue!

McCown sucked, but if you want to see a truly horrible Bucs QB performance watch Dilfer v. Giants (game #1 of the 1999 season). Bucs defense gave up 124 yards of total offense and the Bucs still lost.

My favorite play of the game was when it was 3rd and 2, and somehow McCown managed to find the one receiver that ran a one yard route.

McCown was bad. Really bad. He made stupid mistakes. He missed throws (there were 2 throws where guys were wide open for TD’s and he missed them). He held the ball too long. I’m shocked that a vet would play so poorly. I really hope it’s just a one game thing, because that was unacceptable.
If there’s one thing I can defend him on it’s that he was under siege much of the day. He almost never got a clean pocket. Regardless, this one is on him. 2 of the stupidest picks I’ve seen in a long time. Even that ridiculous 360 catch that got called back was stupid. It’s almost as if he’s trying to do too much, which is the exact opposite of what he should be doing. He better rebound against the Rams.

McCown gets next game to show he can actually be competent and then if not it’s gotta be Glennon. McCown is know, if Glennon can’t prove he’s worth keeping long term they need to know before they draft a QB, because O-Line, pass rush and secondary are all still big holes.

Have been saying since they signed McCown that he has been a journeyman for a reason. Unfortunately, he made 2 stupid decisions (actually more but he lucked out). He is trying to prove he deserves his true shot to be a starter, which in turn makes him force something out of nothing.
He is lucky to get a sorry Rams team next week. But please don’t confuse the late touchdowns as a big positive. Carolina’s prevent D gave him short passes that many of us could have made. He should never have been GIVEN the starting job. Glennon did just fine with a crappy offensive line, 1 receiver and a 3rd/4th string RB (and Schiano!) They should have let him progress and if he sucked, go draft a QB with a top 5 pick. McCown is 35 so he doesn’t have a future (or a present really)

McCown’s “rally” was a Carolina D sitting on all big plays and protecting a 3 score lead. Any QB should have been able to put a score or two up on that with no problem.
He was awful — but that’s no shock. despite the Tampa media’ attempts to whitewash things, his career MO has been to be awful. He’s a bad QB who had a lucky run of games last year.
Too bad Lovie is too stubborn to make the right move and bail on the experiment.

The Panthers went into a dime package at around the 7 minute mark, but even then they still blitzed a safety or LB on almost every down. Several times at the end, I thought “Oh crap!”, when McCown barely got the ball out before being stripped or sacked. I don’t think he ever tried to throw deep to at least force any pass interference calls. At least Glennon, even with all his check downs, will take his shots once in a while.

While I would agree that Josh made a couple of very stupid plays that a player of his experience should never make, I’m not sure that we can hang this thing entirely on him. I can’t figure out what our offense is trying to do. It seems like the way they are built with the big receivers and TE and speed in the slot that we should be a spread short passing attack with the QB out of the shotgun. When we were in those sets it appeared that Josh had some time and they were somewhat successful. However, anytime they got into any rhythm or had success they immediately went back into a 2 back set or an I formation with Josh under center. They do not appear built for this with their poor o-line and it showed. Do you agree?

Here is the problem for those that don’t understand frustration. All we have heard is “But we were a 4-12 team” over and over. Well guess what? We started 0-8 on the way. Now hopes are up with a proven winner and his hand chosen QB etc and where do we start with another disgraceful showing. Now 0-1 Fans have a right to be upset.

Looking at our schedule Rams, @Atlanta @Pittsburgh @New Orleans, Baltimore, then we get our Bye week.
Atlanta and New Orleans looked good as did Pittsburgh, If we enter the bye at 1-5 or 2-4 then some of these FA moves need to be scrutinized like never before.
If Mccown does not improve and we are 1-5 or 2-4 then I am calling for Glennon.
I think giving them to the bye week is fair, but if these problems are not resolved and we have some tough games after the bye, I just do not know. I want to have hope but after what I saw today there is little hope left.

Look guys, this game was bad. Real bad. There’s very little positive to gain from it. However, I wouldn’t proclaim the sky falling quite yet. That’s a playoff football team that blew us out twice last year. Yes I know they were missing Cam, but while Anderson isn’t a good QB, he’s not horrible either. We see backups come in and win games for their teams all the time (ahem Josh McCown). We have a bunch of new guys in new schemes, and I think we are expecting too much in thinking they are going to be great out the box. Obviously today’s performance sucked, but we still had a chance to beat a good football team, and we blew it. I’m going to preface this and say that in no way and I comparing this team to the 2002 team, but they did lose their first game too, and looked pretty bad in the process. The season is not over. We can get better, and I really believe we will. Are we a playoff team? I’d probably say no, but there are going to be 16 other teams that are 0-1. So it’s fine to be pissed off about this game – as fans we deserve that. But let’s not go running Lovie out of town after one game against a good team. Let’s at least give him until week 5, no?

Hawiian- agree with every word. We replaced over half the team. New guys, new coaches, new everything. This guys are gonna spend the year getting used to one another.
I’m actually optimistic- with the following exceptions
Doug Martin has lost it. Don’t Know what “it” is, but he had it two years ago. Not last year. Not this year. Gotta start James or Rainey.
Line still needs an experienced starter.
D-Line still needs a Pass rushing DE( watch it be Bowers!)
Mason Foster can’t play Cover 2 MLB
Mark Barron is invisible. All he did today was miss tackles, and get in the way!

Hawaiian Buc – I’m not running Lovie out of town. But the 35 year old QB who played like a typical college freshman – a showing like that says he’s not a game manager. He’s a team killer. Everytime we face a good defense this is going to be what happens. His play today was how he responds to pressure and stress. He is not going to get ‘better’ – this is exactly how good he is.

And look, I predicted a 1-4 or 0-5 start to the season. But we lost to a vulnerable team today. Great defense, yes – but we gave them unforced error after unforced error. They simply took what we gave them and coasted at the end, making the score much closer than what the game really was.
If I’m Lovie Smith, I’m re-thinking my DL depth chart. No pressure = death, in the cover 2. If I’m Jeff Tedford, I may have sealed my own doom by taking this job. The scheme was fine, the play calling was okay. The QB was baffling everyone, and I mean everyone. I never in a million years expected that much stupid from what should be a very mature QB.

JOE this is the fairest piece you have ever written on Glennon. what you observed and reported on is a testament to his character and professionalism. and if given a chance with some descent play calling, no mandatory leg brace and the freedom to scramble he will do what he did at Carolina. Some one has written Glennon will take over by the forth game. I believe it will be probably by the fifth. If McCown plays again like he did today.

ol’e stone face smith is to damn set in his way’s , to admit his choice of qb sucks and will continue to suck the rest of the year. we had the 7th pick and still did not pull the trigger on a franchise QB! oh the humanity the drama-the irony and by the way can u show a little emotion on the sideline when our team is getting their asses handed to em instead of that blank stare of stupidity that resonates from your picture on the jumbo screen. and what about this defense-or I would say lack of, you doesn’t have to call me Johnson,johnson could not sack a 54 year old man with copd and one leg. news flash for ya they haven’t worked on mccoys contract for a reason he will be out of here next year to a winning club. hope u like what the glazers are dishing out for dinner. because it’s the only thing on the menu for at least three more years

He’s played like this his entire career which is why he’s been with so many teams. At 35, you really think the guy is going to suddenly develop good habits? Get used to the erratic play. Historically, aside from that one good year in Chicago, he throws about as many touchdowns as he does interceptions and has a tendency to fumble. He needs to be in a tightly controlled offense with heavily scripted plays. He does not improvise very well as we saw yesterday. It is what it is.
