Offensive Line Held Up

Anthony Collins and the O-line were not the problem

The Bucs’ offensive line was not the problem today.

Patrick Omameh, making his first career start, held up at right guard. Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins went down in the second quarter with a knee injury, but Garrett Gilkey, a seventh-round pick of the Browns last year, jumped in and you didn’t hear his name, which is what you want from an offensive lineman.

The pass protection largely was there for Josh McCown. At least one of the three sacks he took was on him, and one was on the horrid pass blocking of Doug Martin.

It was Omameh and Demar Dotson who blew open the huge hole that Jorvorskie Lane rumbled through for 54 yards. (Um, why didn’t he get another carry?)

The Panthers’ front-7 is a nasty, powerful bunch. The O-line’s day should not be discounted.

Looking for a silver lining from today’s torturous loss? It’s on the O-line.

Gilkey not pooping the bed does not equate to oline being solid. Put down the palm palms

  2. deminion Says:

Gilkey did a great job the Oline did well saw pressure in McCowns face alot also he held the ball too long

  3. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Well. I wish there was someone who said old man mccown was not very good this off season.

The MGM lives! mcccown will be benched by week 8.

  4. NJBucsFan Says:

    Fire Lovie

  5. DallasBuc Says:

Realist- no one has been more vocal about mediocre QB, mediocre oline than me this offseason. Most don’t want to see what obvious because they like Lovie more than reality.

  6. jo_mama Says:

Greg Schanio and Lovie Smith Had the same record at this point in each season.

The only difference is the Lovie has HIS guy while Schanio was tasked with getting rid of SOMEONE Else’s guy.

    Bring back Schanio

  7. sho nuff Says:

    wow

  8. mpmalloy Says:

    The MGM grows restless.

  9. Cecil Bill Says:

You’re right it was Josh McCown’s inability to spot wide open receivers, maybe his old age is starting to affect his eyesight.

  10. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Is this an attempt to away opinion?
Because if it is an ACL tear for Mankins, then Joe’s BFF is a sure bet to be signed tomorrow
    “Ritchie Incognito, come on down!”

Hope nobody sends him all these”Ritchie Sucks” post from this site!

  11. Boomer33 Says:

Incognito will be a Buc next week.

  12. bucrightoff Says:

Offensive line was acceptable but yeah Incognito still needed for some more nastiness, particularly if Mankins injury is anything serious.

  13. mpmalloy Says:

Bill said that these were MAGIC beans. I just don’t understand.

  14. DallasBuc Says:

“Do-no-wrong Lovie and his lapdog GM”
    Get it now?

  15. eric Says:

The O-Line did not run block well at all from what I saw, we could not throw the ball down field to our Wideouts!

  16. clafollett Says:

I second the questioning of Layne not getting the ball again. Martin was awful. This offense has nothing. Our D wasn’t much better.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

Don’t let the score fool ya, sugarcoaters. That was a man beat down. Just look at at how they sent our players to the locker room. Effing humiliating.

  18. Scotasaurus Says:

The only mystery about the offense was wondering when it would show up.

  19. INDYbucsfan Says:

Even though we changed GM and coaching staff and numerous players, I feel like we were watching the bucs of the past two years. And no joe the O line did not do a solid job! They’re pros. They should be able to consistently block other pros.
The only silver lining was Patton.

  20. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- where you been? Still shell-shocked? Me too

  21. Tackleblockwin Says:

Nice play calling Arroyo. Lets keep running the ball up the middle into a brick wall…genius. Though the Oline did not fall apart…they were pretty poor IMO. And the two 1st down INTs by McCown were terrible…just pathetic. You just can’t do that, especially against a top D.

  22. discount08 Says:

I hate to say this, but we have some kind of voodoo in Tampa bay JOE. We loose our BIG nasty pass protecting run blocking machine AKA human Armoire in Carl Nicks. Does anyone see Deja Vu happening here. I do, and lets give glennon a shot with these amazing receivers that didn’t drop a ball all day except for bobby rainey and no hands doug martin. We have a solid and I mean solid receiving corps here. Our defense is actually pretty good. We need to figure out who is going to be taking the snaps. And OMG what is with the safeties on our defense. HORRIBLE

  23. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Did anyone else notice that Doug Martin has lost it?
    He couldn’t run last season.
9 for 9? My old Ass could average that
The offense struggled in the first half- because The team couldn’t run.
Once Rainey came in- we started to gain momentum.

    Sucks. I really like Martin.
    But it does happen

  24. WalkdaPlank Says:

IMHO Glennon needs to start NOW. He needs to play out the season so Lovie can know if he is the answer. If we suck we draft a QB next year, if not then we win and everyone is in the MGM. No more beating around the bush with McCown.

  25. Doc Says:

PLEASE get a running back that is not afraid to run the ball and can pick up blitzes. It’s appears Doug is afraid of getting hurt and not running the ball.

  26. Middleburg Matt Says:

    Bring on the Glennon Mob!!!

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Joe- if you’ve wiped your hands from the “palm palms” joke and put down the Pom Poms I’d like to hear about it!

  28. phreakybucfan Says:

I agree with capt’n. Rainey at least seems able to still make a positive play when the run blocking sucks, which it did.

  29. OB Says:

    Joe

McCown looked like a deer in the headlights for most of the game. He was beyond bad.

  30. Matt B Says:

I must have watched a different game from Joe because I saw defenders in our backfield all day. No holes to run through aside from the quick handoff to Lane. Our QB got hit on every pass attempt. Yes, Carolina’s d-line is awesome but this doesn’t make it acceptable that they dominated us at the line of scrimmage.

  31. Gt40bear Says:

I don’t know what game Joe watched or how much adult beverages he consumed but the offensive live was as pathetic as the rest of the team! Plenty of blame to go around though, Rob Johnson was horrible at QB today…wait!

  32. NJBucsFan Says:

    Cut McCown

  33. buc4lyfe Says:

    FYI MGM

MIKE GLENNON IS ALSO MEDIOCRE, different book same story

  34. Dan Says:

OLINE WAS HORRIBLE. Worse than the preseason until the 4th quarter.

  35. Jeagan1999 Says:

Joe, gotta correct you…the Bucs offensive line was not the “only” problem…I think when you re watch the tape you’ll see they did not play well for most of the game.

  36. sho nuff Says:

am i the only one sick of goldstan? that dude is a bust!

  37. BucGorrilla Says:

    BENCH JOSH MCCOWN!

  38. DallasBuc Says:

Joe is pulling a Mark Dominik when things go bad…so are the rest of the fanboys that have shouted me down for the last 6 months for observing the obvious: mediocre QB, mediocre oline, no competition for FAs(especially #90)

  39. GRIF4McCLOWNSUX Says:

McCLOWN was too little too late,ooH and thanks Gholston!

  40. NJBucsFan Says:

    Sign Pryor

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

@buc4lyfe- that’s the point! Lovie himself said Glennon is the future. Put him in now and let him pass or fail so we can know that. If Hundley, Mariota, and especially Jameis are in next year’s draft and Lovie still thinks Glennon is the future and doesn’t draft one of them because Glennon didn’t play this season then Lovie will be out of here in 2 years like Schiano.

  42. SAMCRO Says:

Actually the Panthers o-line looked better. They gave Anderson quite a bit of time way too often while they blasted holes for the running game. We literally generated no pass rush, and even McCoy seemed pedestrian at most, except maybe a few heroic plays. Plus, I have no-clue why we didn’t LB and DB blitz more often on a backup QB.

They blitzed the crap out of us.

  43. JonBuc Says:

Unless you call a 35 year old qb running for his life on nearly every play an issue…I guess you’re right.

  44. ryan Says:

OL held up? Sure, if you want to just ignore their run blocking. 16 carries for 21 yards for Martin/Rainey.

  45. JT Says:

Come on. Bench mccown. He was awful. We need to see what glennon can do because mccown is done.

  46. Harry Says:

I don’t understand how we did so badly. I know the Panthers have a great D. But how does Derick Anderson end up with a 108.8 QB rating???? Minnesota, also playing a “great defense”, beat the Rams 34-6!!!!! I am speechless.

  47. Andrew 1 Says:

OFFENSIVE LINE HELD UP?!?! were we watching the same damn game?! No, the offensive line did not hold up. The did a pretty good job in the fourth quarter, but other than that they were horrible for the rest both pass blocking and run blocking. Minus that huge run by Lane in the first quarter, we had a grand total of 21 yards rushing by our RBs! Why you ask? because our damn o line couldnt open up a hole to save theirs lives!

  48. Andrew 1 Says:

McCown was looking over his shoulder the whole game as well. Put in Glennon if you want, He’ll be doing the same thing.

  49. Nate_tweetz Says:

The Left Guard curse for the Bucs continues with Mankins getting hurt.

  50. buc4lyfe Says:

    @WalkdaPlank

since your oblivious I’ll tell you…. Sorry but lovie lied to get fans off mccowns back. As horrible as mccown played I found it comical to see people asking for Glennon. If I remember correctly he’s horrible in the 4th quarter, and has never experienced momentum in the second half of a game ever because he has no poise for comebacks, how many does he have? And just like last year he played pathetic in the preseason against nobody’s. And if you still don’t know how I feel about every quarterback on our roster, Glennon is a downgrade, mccown did the exact same thing by coming back that Brian hoyer did

  51. Mike10 Says:

Ya no silver lining Joe please.

You know what we were made to believe from this new staff. Overall I saw garbage! The only difference?

Ugly jerseys w that ugly play.

  52. JT Says:

And we will not be able to run the ball until we prove we can pass the ball.

  53. Bucfan77. Says:

Wow. What a way to start a new era. We were out played, out coached and once again we see some of our media making excuses and revising history. Glennon will be in control again by game 4.

  54. Gt40bear Says:

Get ready for all the “it wasn’t as bad as it looked” talk! Think it’s time to admit we’ve been bamboozled by the local and national media! This team is nowhere near as talented as we’ve been led to believe. They played hard but no talent is no talent. I’m over it. If the Bucs win they win, if they lose, they lose. Whatever!

  55. Steve Says:

Is this article a joke? Our o-line was destroyed the entire day.

  56. Dewey Selmon Says:

You are strictly talking about pass protection. If the O-line would of opened some holes for the run we could of controlled the LOS and we wouldn’t of had to worry about passing the ball so much.

  57. lightningbuc Says:

Somewhere tonight Greg Schiano is laughing his ass off while counting Glazer hundred dollar bill wads. Flip-flop wearin’, no cussin’ Lovie crapped himself in his return to Tampa.

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

The silver lining is that I fully expect us to get better. We looked absolutely flat for most of the game on both sides of the ball. No pass rush from our defense allowed them to kill our zone, and no run blocking or pass blocking from our o line doomed our offense. I believe those areas will improve as the season goes on.

  59. CC Says:

I don’t know what game you watched. But from what I saw the o line was horrible. D line other than Mccoy not much better. This just in McCown was a joke for 3 quarter s and Michael Johnson sucks.

  60. BUCYOU17 Says:

I was actually impressed with the o-line as a whole today.

  61. StPeteBucsFan Says:

The only silver lining I can hope for is the “C” word one is never supposed to use about professional athletes.

McCown choked away the first 3 quarters. He made some of the dumbest decisions of his career, and the bobbled ball and interception….geez.

Why do I think this is a silver lining? Because perhaps he won’t CHOKE next week! He couldn’t play any worse than he did the first three quarters.

  62. BucFan20 Says:

Had the Panthers kept the pressure on at the end of the game as they had been there would have been no come back. They screwed it up. Nothing Josh did. The line did not hold up, Josh made stupid mistakes and what the hell is Martin doing here? Joe question about Lane? Same as last year and no huddle offense. If it works why use it? McCown will be on a short leash but you can bet they will be watching others too.

  63. Trubucfan22 Says:

Come on joe…. There wasn’t a single running lane for our RBs. We got lucky on the fb dive that fooled the defense. We didn’t out block them, it was just a fluke play. Pass blocking was better than expected, I’ll give them that. But let’s be honest…. Expectations were ground level.

  64. Phred Says:

O-line did a below-average job of pass-blocking. Martin couldn’t get any yards because the Panthers D did not have to respect McCown’s passing and could focus on stopping the run. The main problem is Josh McCown. He made some very bad decisions today: two interceptions that should never have been thrown and a sack that took the Bucs out of field goal range.

The same thing I said last week: ownership will be happy if Lovie gets six wins out of the team this year. Seven wins will be over-achieving and 8-8 should get Lovie coach of the year.

  65. Trubucfan22 Says:

The bucs played terrible for most of the game, but in theend we still had a chance to win. No need to get dramatic, this was 1 loss for a new team. We will get better. GO BUCS!

  66. dreambig Says:

This week McCown made a strong case that he is at best the 5th best QB in the division. Carolina’s backup is better than McCown, Glennon is arguably as good, at least he is less inclined to panic and throw the ball up for grabs. Factoring in backups for the Saints or Falcons, McCown could be the 8th best QB in the division. I can not believe Lovie brought this guy in as the unchallenged starter.
    McCown cost us the game.

  67. Bucfan77. Says:

How many excuses will we hear about the cap – shoot on Dale Mabry? 620 or 987? Joe, let’s admit it, we got our head handed to us in our ass.

  68. Bucfever40 Says:

joe are you delusional? O-line not the problem? What game were YOU watching? I bet we are now last in the league on offense, that is most certainly thee problem!

  69. MadMax Says:

I call BS on this one Joe….didnt even read the story or comments because I KNOW what I saw….dont need you trying to tell people how to think….O line wasnt a problem? PSHHhhhh! Ok whatever….

  70. StAugBuc Says:

What bothers me the most is being lied to about the QB position. Not big Glennon fan, but he’s the future? What, 2 years from now when he’s in his fourth year? He’s already started more games than Mccown has in the last 3 years at a minimum. What the hell was the thinking here?

  71. MadMax Says:

Incognito is coming…..and get over it! Trust me, you’ll be glad.

  72. Greg Dyer Says:

Oh my gosh! Did Greg Olsen sneak in a different number? We knew he was going to be the primary receiver and we treated him like an after thought! Embarrassing! Was at the game and all phases were super weak and except maybe the return game. Mckown looked like he was clueless. The botched snap where the ball hit the ground and he came up to throw a helicopter to the DB was embarrassing !!!!!

  73. rawr Says:

Don’t worry guys next year we are going to be better we are going to draft first.Go Bucs.

  74. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

Silver lining?? Lmao! Yeah I yard per rush sure implies O-Line dominance!’
If you saw any silver, it was a Shark- surfacing to bite you in Half
Don’t know how you watched that Game, and actually thought the line was adequate!!

    We couldn’t run the ball.
    We couldn’t rush the passer
We can’t hold on to interceptions.

That ain’t Lovie Ball- you won’t win without those three things

  75. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

    Glennon??? Lmfao
Go watch the preseason- where that guy couldn’t complete a pass against 4th stringers- then say Glennon to me! I need the laugh
    That kid is the future.
If you are talking about busboys at Golden corral

  76. ForgotAboutDre Says:

Sorry Joe, but I’m not sure where you got the notion that the line held up. Outside of the abysmal run blocking, McCown didn’t have time until the 4th quarter…not that it excuses his terrible play.

  77. richardtyson Says:

Just a theory but Mankins was hurt before getting traded and just tuffed it out until the first quarter of the game. Just a theory.

  78. WobbleBuc Says:

Capt Dimwit, even if McCown and Glennon have the same skill set, Glennon is the younger cheaper option who could improve. Since we didn’t draft a QB this year it would make sense to see what we have in Glennon and draft the real future if he doesn’t turn out to be that. Instead you would rather stick with McCown while Glennon rots on the bench never knowing if he is a true future all the while waiting to draft a QB because we don’t truly know. Maybe you’re the captain of the Golden Corral busboys and want him as part of your team.

  79. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The offensive line only held up if you compare it to a couple of the preseason games this year. They were awful! They were getting blown off the ball at the snap. There was absolutely nowhere to run. Every one of McCown’s throws were under heavy pressure. He wasn’t able to sit back in a clean pocket on more than maybe 2 throws all day. I’m starting to think Incognito may be a Buc by Tuesday. And I’m not even going to complain about it.

  80. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Had Glennon played, it would have been the same result in a different way. He wouldn’t have thrown those 2 boneheaded picks. He’s better than that. However, he would have been eaten alive by that Panthers d-line. They would have had about 8 sacks, and he’d be throwing a lot of check downs on third and long.

  81. DallasBuc Says:

    Hawaiian- agreed.

  82. J Says:

The O-line didn’t open any holes or protect. He had to move the pocket several times because the pressure up the middle. McCown was trying to do way too much, I thought he was supposed to make sound decisions. Not ready to pull the plug yet but the leash is already short. He does have some ball skills, but the way he gave the ball away is unacceptable. Receivers and tight ends looked solid. Running backs didn’t have many holes but also didn’t make anything happen. Defense played ok, didn’t get off the field. They allowed Derek Anderson to look like a starter and didn’t force turnovers.

  83. HolyBuc Says:

How the hell do you watch that game and say the O-Line held up? Run blocking and pass blocking are usually a big part of the offensive game plan…neither of those were done. The RG crap the bed as did Dotson watch how fast the pressure came from the right.

  84. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Martin had absolutely nowhere to go. They damn near beat him to the handoff on about 6 of those carries. Jim Brown couldn’t have gotten any yardage with that piss poor blocking. Maybe Martin has lost it, but you sure as hell can’t determine that from today’s game.

  85. Capt.Tim,Back from Davie Jones's locker Says:

    Wobbly
No one- NO ONE- said they have the same skill set. Far from it!
McCown is very atheletic, and can throw the long ball
Glennon is a statue, who never throws over 8 yards with any accuracy.
Since I had to point that out- it’s obvious that you know nothing about football.

Hawaiian- agreed. And it’s odd how often that happens

I sure hope Mankins is ok. For this team to be successful- we have to be able to run the ball. We sure can’t right now.

Gonna be hard to start Martin next week.

  86. clwilljr Says:

the oline played terrible in this game point blank period the line last yr didn’t look like this line

  87. Drew Says:

I Love everyone’s arguing the seasons over after 1 game, and calling for Glennon. WTF is wrong with Buc fans. The fans posting here are the biggest disappointment I have ever seen.

  88. MadMax Says:

Lol, ok Drew, go ahead and accept the mediocrity and pointing at those of us who want better! You and a few others whine because we whine….must be nice to be so easily satisfied and happy with the amount of “SUCK” witnessed today…..until the last 5 minutes, we absolutely SUCKED!!! I hope I disappointed you even more!!!!

  89. Just Me Says:

4Drew & all other Duemig Clones: Why the excuses about pressure on McCown when that couldn’t be considered for Glennon last year from you? We were out played, out coached and out classed by a teem that came ready to play and set a tone for there season. today we didn’t make it to the pot – our team craped their pants. If we have any hope this year, Lovey needs to make some changes today(Monday). He probably will not because if you add it up, Lovey is not a winning coach. He is not a good evaluator of talent. This team sucked yesterday*sunday*. I sure hope to see a diferent team next Sunday.

  90. Brandon Says:

Schanio…palm palms…Glennon an upgrade… are we as Bucs fans cursed to eternally stupid?
