“He Looks Like He’s Angling For A New Contract”
August 31st, 2014Opening day is less than a week away, and the Bucs don’t have a new contract for Gerald McCoy.
Barring an unlikely 11th-hour deal, McCoy will enter the final season of his rookie contract without a promise for more.
Bucs general manager Jason Licht has spoken openly about his desire to lock up a new deal for McCoy, but nothing has happened — and McCoy won’t entertain discussing subject publicly.
Bucs icon Ronde Barber, however, thinks McCoy is a key to the Buccaneers season and that McCoy is hungry for a massive new paycheck. Barber talked all things Bucs to the Charlotte Observer in advance of the Bucs-Panthers opening day matchup in Tampa.
“The storyline will be whoever’s facing Gerald McCoy. He has been completely dominant in preseason so far,” Barber said in a phone interview.
… Though McCoy finished with only one tackle in the two games against Carolina, Barber said he looks like he’s playing with purpose this year.
“From the first snap of the Jacksonville game, he’s in the backfield (for) a 4-yard tackle for loss (on running back Jordan Todman). And it’s been that way all preseason,” Barber said. “He looks like he’s angling for a new contract.”
Regarding McCoy’s stats against Carolina, he was consistently double- and triple-teamed by them last year. Check the film, and McCoy has said it himself. McCoy can’t carry a defensive line himself. Nobody can.
Is McCoy “angling” for a new deal? That was an interesting choice of words for Barber, who has all kinds of insider access at One Buc Palace. He’ll be calling the Panthers-Bucs game for FOX.
Joe would expect McCoy to try and get as much as he can for himself. It’s a tricky situation with the NFL salary cap expected to grow greatly in the coming years. McCoy is set to earn about $10.5 million this season.

angling for a new deals are players that hold out so no there was nothing interesting about Barber’s choice of words, the guys that keeps trying to sell us on the skill of Leonard Johnson. It’s not angling if it was always a foregone conclusion he was gonna sign a massive deal just like such. He’s big time and his agents job is too easy

PAY THE MAN!!!
August 31st, 2014 at 9:41 pm
hmmm, so does this mean that adrian slowborn is “angling” to be let go after this year?
August 31st, 2014 at 9:43 pm
Look, if we can pay 16 million a year for a hobbled, back from ACL surgery, shell of his former self, Darrelle Revis, then there is no reason in the world a 100% healthy G.McCoy doesn’t deserve to get paid. At least he would legitimately deserve it for services rendered.
August 31st, 2014 at 9:43 pm
are you his agent joe ?he doesnt need your help, he will get a new deal no problem!
August 31st, 2014 at 9:49 pm
Give the man his money!
August 31st, 2014 at 9:49 pm
He knows what he’s worth, he also knows that at $10.5 million this year he would look like a jackass raising a fit about it.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:02 pm
I bet he doesn’t re-sign.
Mark Dominik’s failure would be complete.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:07 pm
@ jim porson. Why are u bashing joe? It’s not like he was telling the Bucs organization to pay him. All in all. PAY THE MAN!
August 31st, 2014 at 10:08 pm
Lock him up
August 31st, 2014 at 10:08 pm
GMC has better ethics than most, and has been through a lot as a person. He isn’t greedy like Mevis. Get a deal done Licht, or these fans will turn on you faster than they did Greg Schiano.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:13 pm
I can totally picture it now….at 415, 10 minutes before kickoff this coming Sunday, it is announced in a packed RayJay that McCoy has a new 6 year deal. Place is goin nuts when he is introduced and he comes out like a man possessed….single-handedly ripping Carolina apart.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:25 pm
Now would be the best time to get the deal done, because if they wait, the Bucs could have a very good season and drive up the price.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:29 pm
@BucsRealist,
How did you like that sack fumble by Clayborn against Buffalo?
August 31st, 2014 at 10:35 pm
I am sure he knows they will get his new deal done. Also him being the man he is , he knows they need to get the new players here and ready for the season to start.
August 31st, 2014 at 11:02 pm
McCoy signing a new contract on Lovie’s team is the least of my worries. Now or later the deal gets done.
August 31st, 2014 at 11:02 pm
So if a player is angling for a big contract in a contract year, that suggests he is making a choice to play harder than other years. So if it’s not a contract year then players are not trying to be their best? Rhonde only gave his all during a contract year so he could make more money? The other years he wasn’t trying quite as hard? I am not buying any of that BS. Great players don’t give less than 100% during non contract years. GMC is playing lights out because he is a beast and has a goal to be great. He knows the big contract will come.

@Dreambig,
I agree with you, but at the same time, I look at it in a different way. For many people (myself included), money is the greatest motivation. I work hard every day, but I do it because in the end I know I’ll make money as a result. I think that’s pretty much what Ronde meant. I don’t think he means he didn’t try hard previously, but McCoy is trying to get at another level. When you get to that elite level, the money will follow.
August 31st, 2014 at 11:16 pm
Absolutely no reason not to pay the man,
unless we need that money for ManU.
August 31st, 2014 at 11:22 pm
Bawlmerbucfan: The funniest thing I have heard all well is a comment you made…. ” IT is announced at a “PACKED” Ray Jay, LMAO… good one man
August 31st, 2014 at 11:25 pm
The Bucs need to pay the man ASAP. McCoy is a franchise guy and I would hate to see him leave. Also while the Bucs work on the McCoy deal they need to start working on a new deal for David.
August 31st, 2014 at 11:49 pm
@Hawaiian,
Were saying the same thing. It just always bugs me when people talk about contract years as being a reason someone is excelling. For successful people, money is a key motivator, but it is the daily behaviors and personality traits such as work ethic, ambition, drive, desire for accomplishment, …etc that lead to the payday. GMC busting his hump in previous years has positioned him be elite now and is the reason he will get the big contract. He is not playing better because of the contract, he is playing better because the hard work is paying off and he is better.

What’s he worth?
If Revis is worth 16m/yr and Johnson is worth 8m/yr. How much is McCoy worth? I think he make around 12.5 per yr. now.
Is he worth 16m/yr?

If I were McCoy I’d ask for 6y/100m out of principality alone. Does he settle for 13.5? Some commented 10.5, does he take a pay cut to stay w the team?

I thought the Buc’s had a policy of not renewing contracts early, and waited until the toward the end final year to do so?
No such policy. Mike Williams got an extension this time last year. –Joe

He’s gonna get huge money.
And deserves it!
He is everything you could possibly ask for, for the face of a franchise!
His talent is so far above his competition, it’s like a man among boys.
And off the field- he is truly a role model. A tremendous person, slways a smile. Fantastic work ethic!
It’s an honor having Gerald McCoy on this team. He’s the kind of guy/ you hope your son grows up to be like. Never prouder of Any Buccaneer!
He’s a great young man.
Pay the Man- he deserves every penny!

Anywhere from 12-15 mil per year is about right. This article about how the Lions messed up with Sun’s contract had some interesting figures: http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2014-08-13/ndamukong-suh-detroit-lions-contract-trade-best-option-salary-cup-disaster-geno-atkins-haloti-ngata
What we don’t want is an untenably massive contract that becomes a burden and excuse for getting rid of him while he’s still in his prime. This is one of those guys we want to see as a Buc for the rest of his (hopefully very long and healthy) career so hopefully we get it right.
