Demps Dumped
August 30th, 2014Final cuts are coming by 4 p.m., and the Bucs officially have eight to go. However, reports leaking out via various sources claim track star/former Gators running back Jeff Demps has gotten the boot.
For weeks, Joe’s been clobbered by many for suggesting Demps offered little more than a step in open space on his peers and bad hands, plus the same poor returner skills he showed in previous preseason and regular seasons.
Joe suspects Demps is a good bet for the Bucs practice squad.

Demps is a waste of space even on the practice squad.
August 30th, 2014 at 11:58 am
Too many other needs outweigh even the practice sq for him
August 30th, 2014 at 12:02 pm
I sure hope he doesn’t end up on the practice squad. One trick pony. And last I checked, you need to be able to hold on to the rock in order to make it count. Fast wheels, bad hands.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:09 pm
Another rock star failure?
August 30th, 2014 at 12:12 pm
DEMPS DROPPED!
August 30th, 2014 at 12:13 pm
Demps’ only value (over other RBs) was in the mismatch (speed), but he had difficulty catching the ball and wasn’t a factor on special teams. That made his value sit right at zero. If you have little (or no) depth at a position, you can afford to keep a player who has ‘potential’. The Bucs have too many RBs that are past ‘potential’.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:14 pm
Had high hopes for Demps (Go Gators)….fact is he spent too much time working on his other craft. I respect his desire for an Olympic gold medal, but it ultimately cost him his football career, which I believe could have been a good one with more practice coming out of college…… So long Demps.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:17 pm
He needs to go push bobsleds!
August 30th, 2014 at 12:17 pm
His fumble Thursday Night and dropping a deep pass when he was wide open in the game before sealed Demp’s fate. He got a fair shot to show what he could do. Of course Glennon got many opportunities to shine and fell flat on his face too even after getting first string line help in two games. Lovie needs to cut him too and move on.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:21 pm
just say no to the practice squad…
but the cheerleading squad might be a possibility.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:21 pm
Owlkat,
Wrong again. Glennon performed well last year, as a 3rd round rookie.
Are you still bitter about being wrongly devoted to Josh Freeman? That’s the only thing I can think of.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:23 pm
You can’t teach speed, but I am not sure you can teach vision and that is what he lacks. He runs north sound without any moves to make a linebacker miss. He usually runs straight into a tackle. Unlike Martin, who bounces off would be tacklers. Also, Demps has not shown that he can use that elite speed on sweeps. I never saw him beat a corner to the edge. The experiment was worth the effort, but it is not worth continuing for a man that fast who cannot make defenders miss and has bad hands.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:24 pm
Finally! Real life isn’t Madden……speed is a huge asset, but not the only thing a guy needs. Roster spots are to valuable for pet projects.
Would have been interesting if he had focused on football right the way from college.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:28 pm
The Bucs got James and demps to trade Blount to NE. We still won that trade
August 30th, 2014 at 12:28 pm
Demps and Kafka are both gone. Both a waste of space. Hopefully English we be put on the practice squad cus I was impressed by him.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:30 pm
What planet are you on Owlykat? Are you really trying to say that Glennon can’t function as a BACKUP QB? This isn’t fantasy football…

I don’t think English is eligible. He has 4 or 5 years in the league.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:35 pm
The J*E*T*S just dumped Stephen Hill. Would he be a worthwhile project for the Bucs? He fits the part as a Dunkaneer: 6′-3″ and runs a 4.39
August 30th, 2014 at 12:37 pm
Good he is stiff and has no elusiveness welp I’m rdy for wk 1 go bucs
August 30th, 2014 at 12:37 pm
He’s done nothing. Only if they think his shortcomings can be coached. There’s a reason the Jets gave up on him.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
I wanted him to succeed but it was clear in fourth pre season game he was not gonna make it.
August 30th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
@Harry sign him
August 30th, 2014 at 12:44 pm
I’ve seen enough. He knee he had to show something Thursday night. All I saw was him just throwing himself around, not really running. Not much “there” there…
August 30th, 2014 at 12:51 pm
Demps is fast, played in a system that made use of his speed at UF, and not much else. I agree with orca no practice squad slot wasted on a sprinter.

I think so, right? Heck, he is still in his rookie deal so he doesn’t cost much.
August 30th, 2014 at 1:07 pm
STEPHEN HILL SUCKS
August 30th, 2014 at 1:07 pm
Demps needs lots of space to do his thing. Problem is, there’s almost never “lots” of space in the NFL. You have to be able to perform in tight spaces and with defenders draped all over you. I don’t even know if he’s signed to the practice squad at this point. He didn’t show much potential the past two years to be much more than a curiosity.
August 30th, 2014 at 1:09 pm
BURN!
August 30th, 2014 at 1:17 pm
U all missing the real deal. Oneal cousins is gone. Sorry dude. That guy was a bout as good as the back side of my booosach
August 30th, 2014 at 1:18 pm
Unfortunately the guy is overrated. The only thing that’s been keeping him on the team is his speed. Even at Florida, his counterpart and complimentary back Chris Rainy was the better RB and he wasn’t nearly as fast as Demps. He’s a better track guy then a football player, plain and simple.
August 30th, 2014 at 1:19 pm
Hey…just goes to show @ that high level the NFL game is played…if he had followed football after UF instead of trying to have his cake and eat it too…well we’ll never know what kind of football player he might have been @ this level…..still….a Silver Medal ..is eternal !…..good luck Jeff Demps !
August 30th, 2014 at 1:20 pm
Harry,
I’m trying to think why they would want Stephen Hill after they cut Tommy Streeter. Streeter and hill have similar measurables, caught everything they threw to him in camp and caught a TD in preseason.
My understanding is the Jets cut Hill because he basically couldn’t catch the ball. Not pouring water on your suggestion, but would like to hear your rationale!
August 30th, 2014 at 1:30 pm
Hill never had a shot at NYJ I mean come on Mark Sanchez Tebow Geno Smith? which one of those QBs are average ? None just sayin
August 30th, 2014 at 3:33 pm
Demps only works behind Pounceys.
August 30th, 2014 at 3:52 pm
@Macabee Says:
“My understanding is the Jets cut Hill because he basically couldn’t catch the ball.”
It was his measurables, but you make a good point in your comparison of Streeter. If a WR, even with Hill’s measurables has Michael Clayton Syndrome than I don’t want to see him drop a perfectly thrown pass in an important moment of any game. That makes me crazy.
August 30th, 2014 at 4:16 pm
If I remember correctly, Rainey has beaten Demps in one on races in college. Off topic, but a fun note.
August 30th, 2014 at 5:06 pm
I guess we are signing wide receiver/kick returner Chris Williams who was cut by the bears 4.28 40
August 30th, 2014 at 6:14 pm
^^ Why would you “guess” that? Some inside info?
August 30th, 2014 at 6:29 pm
Champ Bailey was cut by the Saints. We need to go get him to play nickel or just for leadership
August 30th, 2014 at 7:10 pm
Yaaay! Finally we can wash our hands of that loser.
