Bucs Trade For Pro Bowl Guard
August 26th, 2014The Bucs’ void at guard has been solved! The hole has been filled!
Today, Tampa Bay traded for Patriots All-Pro guard Logan Mankins, per the uber-NFL insider Jay Glazer. Mankins, 32, was a Pro Bowler last year and started every regular season game.
Breaking: the Patriots have agreed to parameters of a trade to send Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to the Bucs for a pick and TE Tim Wright
— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) August 26, 2014
The deal is not yet finalized but the players have been informed and terms agreed upon. Still some things to work out. Mankins 6x Pro Bowler
— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) August 26, 2014
So there you have it Bucs fans. The crying need for a guard is now resolved. And the locker room has been saved. Joe is very sad to see Wright go but happy the offensive line is repaired.
Guess this means fan favorite Luke Stocker’s job with the Bucs is saved.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:52 pm
What is remaining on Mankins contract? Money/years?…
August 26th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Now what bitches!!!!!!Madden team is set. Game on!
August 26th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
thanks for interupting the deep tissue massage…..your fans have been subjecting you to….:-)
August 26th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Logan Mankins!!!!!
August 26th, 2014 at 1:54 pm
Tim Wright’s future just got a lot brighter.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:54 pm
woooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
talent baby!!
time to win on Sunday and those Stickin Panthers!!
August 26th, 2014 at 1:54 pm
Now sign “Richie”….behind the diversion…..
August 26th, 2014 at 1:54 pm
That’s funny using the Drudge Report gif.
This is a great deal unless the Bucs gave up a 1st or 2nd round pick. Clearly the Bucs are very serious about making a playoff run instead of just improving from last year.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
Incognito signs with pats?
August 26th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
Wow!! Left field for real.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
Mankins signed a six-year contract worth $51 million with New England in 2011.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:56 pm
“Mankins is due to earn a base salary of $6.25 million in 2014, $6.75 million in 2015, and $6.75 million in his final season.”
Can’t wait to see how the Tampa media poops all over this development…
August 26th, 2014 at 1:56 pm
Pro bowl gaurd. Whooooooooooooo
August 26th, 2014 at 1:56 pm
Welp needed a Guard bad wonder who will be getting cut? Hopefully Cousins
August 26th, 2014 at 1:57 pm
OUTSTANDING!!!!!
August 26th, 2014 at 1:57 pm
Great signing!
I would still bring Incognito in if he was healthy.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:57 pm
Woah, thats crazy but awesome news. Tim Wright will fit in good up in NE and we sure as hell need Mankins. Win-win depending on the pick we had to give up.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:58 pm
win win. belichick loves his rutgers guys, with schiano fired, he can collect ’em all
August 26th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
Now that’s a good signing.
August 26th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
Do you mean mentally or physically?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:00 pm
Congrats to Tim Wright, he just won the lottery, he will put up big numbers in that offense.
If the pick is absurdly high than this trade isn’t very good but we’ll see. Mankins is very good….but if that’s true why is New England trading him?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
All praise the football gods today for smiling upon us!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
I think it’s a good move, depending on what round the draft pick is in. Although, it goes against Lovie and Licht’s plan to go younger and cheaper. At least they recognized the problem and are making the attempt to fix it.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
2014. 6.5 million
2015. 7 million
2016. 7 million
August 26th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
this is fantastic. Suit him up thursday and lets roll!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:01 pm
True!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:02 pm
Great pickup
August 26th, 2014 at 2:02 pm
This sounds great, but you have to wonder why in the hell would NE trade this guy?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:03 pm
We still need a right guard….. but this mademe consider doug martin first round of fantasy now…
August 26th, 2014 at 2:03 pm
Clever stuff L&L. Thought Incognito was a smokescreen for Boone but it seems it was for Mankins instead.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:03 pm
Funny how arguably one of the best coaches in the history of the NFL, Belichik, wants another of Schiano’s Rutgers/Bucs boys.
Schiano was lampooned as making this Rutgers South when he brought Wright in.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
Wright will be a household name by the end of this season – he’s exactly what Hernandez was minus the concealed weapons. All catching and no blocking.
Mankins will be a stud for us – let’s just hope we can keep him healthy!!!
Thank you Lovie and Licht!!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
Mankins must be about used up for the Patriots to get rid of him. This move reeks of desperation. Bucs end up paying the future away. All this to stop the Incognito insanity?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
4th round pick is not too bad. Of course had we known this was how this would all shake down should have traded Revis for Mankins straight up way back when, but whatever.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
So how bad were Incognito’s table manners at that dinner last night?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
Wow! I’ll miss TimWright, but with ASJ on the team, his numbers were set to go down anyway! Still might take a chance on Incognito even with Mankins! Great job by Bucs front office to address the needs on this team!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
Now sign Incognito and the OL goes from questionable to very, very solid…
August 26th, 2014 at 2:06 pm
Awesome!!!! Of course Lovie cant possibly have a good Oline because he didn’t in Chicago and that means he’s clueless, when it comes to linemen because he only knows defense.. (Sarcasm)
August 26th, 2014 at 2:06 pm
In L & L we trust…they are better poker players than we thought, unless they gave up a 1 or 2, I think that is two draft picks gone from the 2015 draft if it is this year
August 26th, 2014 at 2:06 pm
Not to bring in the rain clouds but doesnt Wrights departure pretty much make Stocker a lock for this roster now?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
I’ll take it. Seems like a pretty nice deal. We’ve got TEs to spare and NE needs one bad. Wright wasn’t impressing anyway and we filled a need. This seems like a true win-win. Now, bring on the people saying we got fleeced and Licht is an idiot
August 26th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
Oh yeah this means Stocker sticks. Great, can’t wait for Wright’s week 1 numbers to be Stockers full season numbers. Amazing he’s survived this long.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
Paying the future away? Some people will bitch about anything. Sheesh. I’m satisfied they are trying to win now.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
So we have a center and a guard…..strongest next move is to sign Richie…instantly and dramatically better….then a vet tackle next cut down
August 26th, 2014 at 2:08 pm
“Bucs trade for Mankins”
…Lol wut!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
I never like dealing with New England, Its like dealing with the rays. you just always feel like you got the short stick somehow!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
What pick????
August 26th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
ESPN is reporting a 4th rounder to Pats
August 26th, 2014 at 2:09 pm
Buc fans, we can thank Schiano for this one!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
Hopefully this isn’t a Nicks issue all over again.
Excited though for my Bucs!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
4th round pick
August 26th, 2014 at 2:11 pm
Wright just became my fantasy sleeper pick. Watch him be an absolute monster but hey we want stocker, smdh.
6-7 million for a guard? Didn’t we have probowl guards making less and didn’t want to pay them?
For the love of god if we give up a 1st or 2nd round pick I’ll go insane.
Best question is why would ne trade him?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
I’d still sign Incognito. Then we are going to playoffs.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:13 pm
Bucs only give up a 4th rounder
August 26th, 2014 at 2:13 pm
2015 4th round puck per ESPN
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
Someone will find a way to bash Licht for this. It’s just a matter of time.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
I like the trade just wonder why NE would be willing to part ways with Mankins unless he is declining or injured. A guy with that type of resume doesn’t just get traded like that. This reeks of desperation
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
@lightningbuc
Yeah Schiano would make a great scout in the NFL too bad he was one of the WORST coaches in buc’s history. He couldn’t game plan, make adjustments, or utilize all the talent around him but he sure could recognize that talent he couldn’t get to produce.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
It was need for need.
Gronk has become an injury machine.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
Tim Wright and a fourth rounder i hear.. good to me
August 26th, 2014 at 2:14 pm
4th round pick is not too bad. Of course had we known this was how this would all shake down should have traded Revis for Mankins straight up way back when, but whatever.
—————-
This ^^^^^^
August 26th, 2014 at 2:15 pm
SIGN RITCHIE!!!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:16 pm
I’m pretty sure Carl Nicks’ contract over five years was paying him more than what Mankins is receiving per year.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:16 pm
I heard it was Wright and a 4th Rounder in 2015, not bad for a ProBowl Guard, plus the Pats will end up with about 2-3 mil in dead money this year
August 26th, 2014 at 2:16 pm
NE needs TEs for their offensive style. I’m sure they have someone behind Mankins that they’re happy with sliding in. I doubt that they’d allow themselves to have that hole there. Doesn’t mean that Mankins is declining, just that they have someone else that they’re comfortable with and Mankins had value
August 26th, 2014 at 2:17 pm
Vjax. D Martin and Dotson only ones from last year. This offense is completely new. I’m excited now. Maybe that kc guard we got is gonna take over the right side
August 26th, 2014 at 2:18 pm
And people STILL want to sign Incognito. Bunch of idiots
August 26th, 2014 at 2:18 pm
I agree, solid move even though we had to throw in a 4th round pick
August 26th, 2014 at 2:18 pm
Mankins is a Celtic monster.
Malloy is quite pleased with this move.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
Schiano had a hand in all this, like DallasBuc says.
Say what you will about Schiano, but the Man knew talent.
Wright will light it up in New England, and the Manbeast will make big holes for Martin, and give “Hold the ball too long” McCown the time he needs to find an open receiver, vs throwing a receiver open.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
“Mankins’ primary position with the Patriots had been at left guard — where Jamon Meredith is slated to start for the Buccaneers.” – Espn.com newsservices
Tells you how much espn knows about us…
August 26th, 2014 at 2:20 pm
They want incognito because we haven’t seen the new guard we got from KC. I’m sure he’ll make an appearance soon and everyone’s worries will be put at ease. Lovie and Licht will still be witless idiots that don’t know what they’re doing, of course, but they will have fixed the O-line problem and we’ll get to see the offense humming while the defense is eating teams alive.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:22 pm
a lot of happy folks here, but I’m like WTF?????
he’s expensive as hell, let’s pray not another nicks situation…..NE ALWAYS wins in the trades!
and WTF about tim wright. ASJ is a rookie last I checked… and we gave up a draft pick!!!!
would have rather had richie
August 26th, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Actually the people who still want to sign
Lord Voldemort are the ones with double digit IQ’s.
The whiny TV-watching media-nose-ring biytches
are the idiots. They believe that since the TV said Voldemort is bad
then he must be bad.
I mean..all my friends believe what the TV says, right?
Voldemort is the logical move to complete the line for
anyone w/ a football IQ above 80.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:23 pm
@Joe
Logan Mankins is 32 years old.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:24 pm
awesome…
August 26th, 2014 at 2:24 pm
“So how bad were Incognito’s table manners at that dinner last night?”
Would it be greedy to want both? It would go from a weakness to a strength.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:24 pm
Is Rishaw Johnson a right guard?
August 26th, 2014 at 2:25 pm
@robert – what a loser mentality. Wright was a rookie last year when he did well and he had far fewer tools than ASJ does. Just because NE trades well, that doesn’t mean that both sides can’t benefit. There doesn’t have to be a winner and a loser in a trade.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:26 pm
Nice. And Tim Wright can go ahead and order his Pro Bowl jersey, I think.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:27 pm
How can anyone possibly be negative to this move? We had two two guards that should not be on an NFL roster yesterday starting! Now we have a pro bowl guard with great character and leadership. Even if he is not what he was he is a HUGE upgrade. His contract will be less than what Carl Nicks was making (great career with buds.) Go ahead and sign incognito we have a good group of leaders that won’t let him get out of line. Then what looks like the weak point of the team is now a much stronger part! And we lost Tim wright?? Who cares I like our rookie better anyway. Tim wright wasn’t drafted for a reason and he had a pretty good year on an AWFUL bucs team. Hopefully he has a good career but I am not worried about the Patriots I am worried about the Bucs being better and you have to admit this move makes us better. The draft pick won’t be higher than a 4th rounder i bet
August 26th, 2014 at 2:27 pm
Awesome! Waiting on hearing what pick we have up though.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:27 pm
Sign Incognito and the Bucs OL would be more than solid.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:28 pm
NE got a cheaper player with more upside
NE got a 4th round pick
We got an EXPENSIVE stop gap and lost our best guy from last year and a draft pick.
L & L took it up the pie hole on this one. horrible move!
when ASJ goes down yall will be all crying a river.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:31 pm
bucrightoff Says:
August 26th, 2014 at 2:07 pm
Oh yeah this means Stocker sticks. Great, can’t wait for Wright’s week 1 numbers to be Stockers full season numbers. Amazing he’s survived this long.
You would rather have Wright then Mankins? We have a much better future with our rookie TE. Sticker will be a blocking TE.
They do this deal to free up some cap room to sign a number of potential free agents. Also their back up they like a lot. I’m very excited!
August 26th, 2014 at 2:31 pm
@robert – I feel like if you won the lottery you would get upset about having to pay the taxes on it.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:32 pm
@robert – what a loser mentality. Wright was a rookie last year when he did well and he had far fewer tools than ASJ does. Just because NE trades well, that doesn’t mean that both sides can’t benefit. There doesn’t have to be a winner and a loser in a trade.
_______________________________________________
loser mentality? it’s my opinion. you got yours, i got mine. who wants a 32yr old gaurd with 3 years in his contract at 6-7 mill a year? and they gave up wright for nickels who will, as everyone knows, will blow up this year in NE. WTF did we need to give a 4th rounder.
we got reamed and if we just needed a stop gap we should have signed ritchie.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:33 pm
Like the trade, but also cautiously optimistic for a couple reasons.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:34 pm
some of us scrutinize more than others. one reason why we are very successful
August 26th, 2014 at 2:35 pm
Has anyone else noticed the ease at which deals are made between our beloved Bucs and the Patriots? Strangely, over multiple regimes, deals seem to be made with the flick of a pen. Is it Ownership?
Someone with a better memory fill in the blanks here. I believe it all started with:
* LaGarette Blount (a polished turd scoured from the un-signed free-agent scrap heap turned diamond in the rough) for a track star who wasn’t ready to play football and still might not be.
* Aqib Talib, an off-the-field detriment, but a ridiculous asset on the field picked in the First Round to cover the enormous receivers who have slayed us the last couple years.
* Darrelle Revis wasn’t traded, but somehow he ended up playing for his old teams most hated rival. Weird?
* Greg Schiano, albeit a crappy NFL coach but a pretty good scout of talent, ends up travelling around all summer with Bill Belli-cheat and looking at prospects while we’re still paying him handsomely.
* Tim Wright (another young diamond in the rough) and a draft pick, gets swapped for an old, but still serviceable ex-Pro-Bowler.
God, I hope Logan Mankins has some gas in the tank. He is everything we need. But we have never made out well in ANY of these deals with the Pats.
Rant End
“Serviceable? Mankins is a lot more than that. And he’s no ex-Pro Bowler. —Joe
August 26th, 2014 at 2:36 pm
Because the bucs have been just crushing with their 4th round picks right?? We have plenty of money left why just let it sit there. Tim wright had a solid year last year on an team that won how many games? He may be good in NE but who cares?? The buds got better today great move..He wasn’t going to play over the rookie this year bc he isn’t half the player.
August 26th, 2014 at 2:37 pm

August 26th, 2014 at 2:38 pm
I like to be a fountain and not a drain but something doesnt seem “wright” in this trade from NE and Belicheat…i guess time will tell and i hope Mankins is still the pro bowler in the past as he has been and not declining..WOW..good trade I hope
August 26th, 2014 at 2:49 pm
Awful trade! A 4th Rd pick and Tim wright? We just traded a starting TE and a 4th rnd pick for a 32 year old guard!
What happens if ASJ gets hurt? who is next, stocker? Myers? Wright could have been used in two TE sets. I agree with a lot of you guys, this seems fishy, why would the pats let him go?
I think they should have waited for the next round of cuts and see who they could have snagged.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
What if any good player gets hurt for any team. Those are risks you make. Tim Wright was going to be the number 2 TE at best. Come on the guy had a decent year last year now he is Jimmy Graham. Relax
August 26th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
Skeptical at best. My spidey sense tells me we got screwed somehow. Rather have had the frat boy for the league minimum but what do I know. Carl nicks 2.0 pay him to watch from home says my crystal ball.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
Glorious!!!!!
August 26th, 2014 at 3:03 pm
Yesssss!
August 26th, 2014 at 3:08 pm
The people who think this is an awful trade doesn’t follow football well enough.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:08 pm
don’t*
August 26th, 2014 at 3:11 pm
great move!
dunkaneers!!
August 26th, 2014 at 3:18 pm
This is a win now move, Tim Wright wasnt going to get as many targets as he did last year, there’s talent everywhere. Loaded at tight end trade one for a pro bowl guard. Sound logic and helps us more than a logjam at one position
August 26th, 2014 at 3:19 pm
@ whocares92 and backto2003
Really? oh wise one, inform us “Dummies”!
I never said Wright was jimmy graham! I am saying in my opinion we got an older guard that we gave up too much for. Wright was the second best pass catcher on our team last year and you just gave him up along with a 4th rd draft pick for a 32 year old guard that a team with the best QB in league let go. A pass first team, A team that is super bowl ready, this year. This tells me his back-up out played him or is just as good.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:20 pm
This is much better.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:24 pm
He was the second best catcher on a god awful team. Mankins was a pro bowler for a playoff team. The guy started every game last year and made the pro bowl and played with a torn acl haha. A 4th rounder and backup TE would be traded all day for a pro bowler
August 26th, 2014 at 3:24 pm
acl in 2011
August 26th, 2014 at 3:25 pm
Some Bucs fans will always be convinced the sky is falling …
L&L just traded for a 32-year old Pro Bowl guard with an long-standing record of success. As in six (6) Pro Bowls since he entered the league in 2005 with the Pats.
So what do some folks say? Too old. Too expensive. Must be something wrong with him if the Pats traded him away. The Pats obviously flimflammed us and got the better of the deal.
Perhaps … just perhaps … Lovie and Jason really do know what they’re doing. After all, Jason used to work for who? Oh ya, the Patriots. Could it be that he knows something we don’t?
L&L also traded with the Chief for a 25-year old guard (Rishaw Johnson) with tremendous upside. Started last 3 games last year for the Chiefs and favorably impressed Coach Reid. Andy’s been around for a year or two; probably doesn’t impress easily.
Folks, the sky’s not falling. Our team just got a whole lot better with these two trades. Patience!
August 26th, 2014 at 3:26 pm
you pablo and robert are by yourselves here. Dominik Schiano and Raheem?
August 26th, 2014 at 3:26 pm
Plus this guys stache is quite impressive
August 26th, 2014 at 3:31 pm
Bill did the same thing to Richard Seymour and Willie Mcginest. The both went on to still produce at a high level. Bill isn’t loyal to no one but Tom Brady. I feel that Bill knew that Logan had a few good years left in him and wanted to get what he can.
Tim was basically 4th on the depth chart at TE. When Luke is starting over you something isn’t right. I feel the Bucs wanted to get something for Tim, since he wasn’t fitting well in the offense. He couldn’t block so it was obvious when he was in we were passing and they will go nickel. That’s not good for a TE since he was too slow for a WR and small for a TE, maybe Bill will use him better, but I feel we basically broke even on the deal.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:32 pm
I’ll be fair, I’m ok with them telling Incognito to shove off now. We needed something better than what we had and now we have it. I’m happy.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:35 pm
I hope I am wrong! perhaps nicks has me jaded. This is the first FA singing and or trade I have been opposed to. Lets hope he plays up to his pro bowl status and helps the younger guys get better.
August 26th, 2014 at 3:45 pm
why are people crying over this deal we need a guard and we just got a top 5 guard whats the problem. tim wright really yeah he had a few good games but we just got a pro bowler playoff seasoned super bowl playing guard what are we complaing about
August 26th, 2014 at 4:05 pm
Look at this team now compared to last year, I for one can not thank L+L and the whole organization enough, Great job and you did it in less than a year.. Once again very proud to be a Bucs Fan…
August 26th, 2014 at 4:48 pm
Tim wright isn’t as good as you people make him out to be. He was a sit in a zone TE. Not a good route runner, nor did he have great hands. He didn’t stretch the field or work the seams. He was a check down machine. He has potential, but ASJ has even more. We still have Meyers who is a good Veteran TE.
Ridiculous, Wright was excellent and is a very good football player. There’s a reason he was double-teamed repeatedly, including by the Seahawks.–Joe
August 26th, 2014 at 5:42 pm
We just got hustled by the pats again we are giving away an awesome young Te for an old oline man that will play 1 year than retire on us Tampa Bay fans should be upset with L&L it’s more than obvious that these 2 guys don’t care about the players that where in place already how do you gut the oline the way they did I have been a buc fan since Sapp got drafted by the bus and we have never had a Te like Wright never we are going to regret this just like Revis trade
August 26th, 2014 at 5:43 pm
Licht mercifully spares us the indignation of watching Oneil Cousins pretend to be an every down player.
August 26th, 2014 at 8:02 pm
People keep saying why would New England trade him. The same reason you’re bitching. He’s a 6 million dollar guard. Who cares he started every game last year 5 consecutive pro bowls. Brady’s goin off in preseason so his performance is fine
August 26th, 2014 at 8:42 pm
I know that Mankins will start and play. Who knows what will happen to Wright under Belichek. He better learn to block.
Give me a proven veteran anytime over a 4th string TE and a who will be the 4th round pick next year.
The man is a proven player and leader. Now the younger guards will have someone to learn from and emulate.
This makes me far more optimistic.
Now get another veteran guard.
