“What Rush?”

August 21st, 2014

ClaybornBowers“Our rush? On the defensive line? What rush?”Adrian Clayborn, when asked to “rank” last year’s pass rush.

“We wasn’t jelled together, we [wasn’t] working together. A lot of stuff went on but I expect better this year,” he said.

Clayborn went on to say last year’s pass rush was geared more toward stunts and confusing people, presumably opponents, rather than the legions of fans and ex-Buccaneers who still scratch their heads.

Keep in mind Clayborn told Joe yesterday that he really didn’t know what he was doing at defensive end last season when he played the left side of the line.

Ahh, the sweet smell of improved coaching. Enjoy Clayborn’s comments via SportsTalkFlorida.com video below.

    Well, if you cannot beat them, confuse them. seemed to work too. as it was the best pass rush Tampa has had the last 5 years. Get adrian slowborn out of the way, and Bring in others to sac and pressure the opposing QB’s.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, I am happy to introduce to you Adrian Clayborn’s biggest fan and (jock strap) supporter, Buc Realist!!!

  3. Bucs Fan #237 Says:

    That better coaching has yet to win a game… 🙂

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    AC is sure getting a lot of attention……much to the pleasure of the “Realist”…..
    How ’bout lets whine some now about letting Bennett go?
    All you “blunt” lovers (Blount)……wasn’t a Buccaneer Man…..

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    I am just glad, that the “real coaches” replaced adrian slowborn the first chance they got. They watched the film and said that this guy cannot play on this side. So they demoted him to the left side. The only question now is how long will they allow him the starter role on that side???

  6. Chef Paul Says:

    I’ve got it figured out. Joe and Realist are working together. Think about it. What brings up a good debate? Strong opinions! Strong opinions on the pop star? Jfro? slowborn? Yep. Realist been here since the beginning.

    If you guys aren’t working together, maybe you should sit down with some wings and beers, and work something out. You’d be great together!!

  7. Harry Says:

    @Chef,
    you think Joe = Realist? Sneaky, very sneaky! LOL

  8. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @ chef paul and harry

    Me and joe keeps making plans, but for some reason joe just never shows up.

    Seriously, I think my track record on players should at least be enough that you actually watch said player for yourself to see if he is any good. I do get upset, when I hear repeatedly that a player is a ” beast and plays 100mph” then you watch it and it is just not the case. Even Steve White last night said that adrian slowborn has been playing ” under OK” ( translation is under average) and did not want to slam the guy due to helping coach is my guess.

  9. BucsQcCity Says:

    I still feel sick when I see some stunts on our Dline.. Will take years to erase that bad feeling

  10. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    Best run defense in 2012 and top 5 in takeaways last year, the defense ice line stunts couldn’t have been all bad?

  11. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    Damn auto spell defensive line stunts, no ice involved

  12. Dooley Says:

    Schiano couldn’t get blood to rush to his head if he were upside down, those stunts worked in taking our front 4 out of plays & games and making useful talent useless. Nobody seems to remember the two drives back to back in Miami when we destroyed that offense, why? Because the players pleaded, mid game with the ex-HC to cut the crap and send them down hill and it worked so why shouldn’t our pass rush improve over the course of this season? And how does a player get replaced after being switched to another starting spot?

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

    Slowborn? Was his mother in labor for two weeks? Buc Realist… You may be right, you may be crazy, but I gotta give you no credit for dissing on a player like nobody else could. Clayborn earning your respect and acknowledgment will be a plus, if it happens.

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    What a shocker, Bucs realist with yet another shot at Clayborn. So original, so creative!!! One trick pony is all you are. You’ve become a completely worthless poster when everyone can predict what you’re going to say before you even say it.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Toes on the Line,

    Best run defense, yet probably the worst pass defense in the history of the NFL. There is absolutely nothing to be proud of with that defense. Yes, we were very good in takeaways last year, gotta give credit for that. Having all-pros all over the field on defense tend to make that happen. Considering the talent we had last year (McCoy, Revis, Goldson, and David), I’d say that defense grossly underperformed. The pass rush wasn’t very good last year from the front 4. We blitzed a ridiculous number of times the last couple years. While it did result in a nice number of turnovers and a decent amount of sacks, it gave up far too many big plays.

  16. BFFL Says:

    The Tampa 2 scheme does not require a pass rush from the left DE. Only on 3rd and long. If you want to talk about pass rush then let’s talk about GMC and MJ. Clayborn had is chance and the coach said no thanks.

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    “The Tampa 2 scheme does not require a pass rush from the left DE.”

    ——-

    I’m sorry, but that’s pretty much the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

  18. Espo Says:

    He’s still chasing Sproles around

  19. Espo Says:

    Every scheme requires a pass rush, from whomever they decide to rush.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    “We wasn’t jelled together”

    Gelled.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    You guys have realist wrong. He is not a Clayborn fan. He calls him “Slowborn”.

    I am a true Clayborn fan, for now 😉

  22. BFFL Says:

    @Hawaiian

    My memory must be failing me. Apparently there have been perennial pass rushers playing left DE on the strong side on those past Buc and Bears teams. I can’t remember, but please share with us their names.

    @Hawaiin Buc

    Are you calling me the adrian slowborn of poster’s!!! cause them are fight’n words!!!

  24. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @BFFL

    here is the 2012 roster with stats
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/chi/2012.htm

    the last 2 years of Lovie’s tenure, they were averaging 8-12 sacs total from the left defensive end.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @BFFL,

    That doesn’t mean they don’t require one. Teams put their premier pass rushers on the right side to go after the QB’s blind side. How many premier LDE’s throughout history can you name aside from Michael Strahan? The Tampa 2 requires pressure from every one of the 4 defensive linemen, including both DT’s.

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Realist,

    I’m calling you the Da’quan Bowers of poster’s.

  27. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    What’s Larry English got?

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Hawaiian

    How many premier LDE’s throughout history can you name aside from Michael Strahan?

    Reggie White. Deacon Jones.

    I get your point though. Generally yes, you would like your best pass rusher on the LT, but every now and again you’ll get some dominant guys on the right side. If your as good as those guys were, it really doesn’t matter where you put them.

  29. BFFL Says:

    @Realist

    I think your stats prove my point. All I see is Peppers consistently getting more than 10 sacks. I’m not saying the LDE never gets sacks, but only it is not their main responsibility. The LDE in the Tampa 2 must do things like set the edge on run plays and cover the back end for screens during 1st and 2nd down. You can’t have every DL position rushing the QB on every down or else the offense will easily exploit guys being out of position.

    @Hawaiian

    I can think of Reggie White also but again you are proving my point. Name a LDE from a Tampa 2

  30. LutzBuczFan Says:

    I don’t think it’s funny that our starting DE jokes about our nonexistent pass rush, but at least he is criticizing his own performance along with the old system. Whose fault is it that they “wasn’t jelled together” in the second year of the system? It has been suggested that we used so many stunts because we couldn’t get pressure otherwise. I hope that “being treated like a man” helps on-field performance.

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

    looks like we all need a brush up on the tampa 2 lol

    “One DT is almost always lined up in a 3 Technique while the other can be anywhere from a 0-3. It started out that both DT’s would be 1-Gap guys, but after getting gashed up the middle too often, they modified to have more of a nose-tackle type (Brian Price, Roy Miller) and a speed rusher (McCoy). The other gaps remain filled by the OLB’s and occasionally by the Mike. The Defensive Ends are almost always in a 5 or higher. They are edge rushers, but still have assignment football when it comes to the run game.”

    http://www.bucsnation.com/2010/5/12/1466315/tampa-2-defense-explain

    So basically you’re both right. The two DEs are in a rush positions, but they both also have run responsibilities.

  32. Berdj J. Rassam Says:

    The Bucs had a mediocre D in 2013 in all respects, both passing and rushing.

  33. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Reggie White played all over the line, including DT. Not a good example at all. Both ends have to set the edge on running plays. In fact, they have the exact same responsibilities. It’s so funny that you are seriously trying to debate this.

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    8-12 sacks per year from the left side, and you somehow come to the conclusion that it proves your point that the left side isn’t required to get sacks????? Heh??? Uh, ok, sure buddy. And your reasoning is because Peppers usually gets more sacks from the QB’s blind side? Laughable.

  35. phreakybucfan Says:

    Realist, are you ready?
    Hawaiian, are you ready?
    LET’S GET IT ON!!!

  36. phreakybucfan Says:

    Notice I put Realist first. Just saying.

  37. jo_mama Says:

    When in doubt blame the coaches.
