If Charles Sims Was A Lineman…
August 17th, 2014The Bucs took a nasty hit Friday when highly-touted rookie running back Charles Sims had ankle surgery and would be lost for at least 12 weeks. For a team building its offense in part around his skills, this was bad news.
Of the three Bucs rookies with the greatest team expectations, wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Sims, it was Sims who appeared most NFL-ready. He was an effective if not a good runner and, of course, had very good hands.
However, if Sims had been a lineman, he may not have needed the surgery, which Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reported was successful.
Word from the Bucs is RB Charles Sims had successful surgery to repair the sheath around a tendon in his ankle today.

Essentially, this type of injury doesn’t neccesarily keep a player off the field. That is, a big ugly. Joe learned yesterday that offensive linemen, for example, don’t move around much and could have toughed it out.
The more mobile the player, the greater the need for surgery. Given Sims’ position, the injury almost required surgery to allow him to juke and to cut on a dime.

I’m more concerned now with all the injuries that occurred in last nights game. Any updates Joe?

I’m not concerned. We’re deep at the position.

Did Herron get hurt? Looks like he got twisted up on a tackle and didn’t return. Thought I saw a slight limp to the sideline.

If Sims was a guard, we’d feel much better about the O-line.

Meredith has been trying to play through his hurt leg. Once healthy, he would be able to start at guard successfully like he did two years ago. They need to put him on IR for now. Glad Sims’ operation was successful. He will be a star for us. Licht is good at evaluating non QB players and did well in the draft other than not getting us a quality QB in the first round.
