Is Lovie Edgy Or Just Having Fun?

Tampa Bay Times writers have their edge detectors up

Preaching patience to media in various ways yesterday, something he did earlier this week, Lovie Smith now has multiple media types wondering whether the head coach is edgy and/or grumpy, or just being a little playful.

Tampa Bay Times veteran scribes Tom Jones and Rick Stroud dove into this in great detail with audio, along with Ronnie Lane and Darek Sharp on WDAE-AM 620 this morning. (see below)

Frankly, Joe really doesn’t care if Lovie has happy, playful, bitter or edgy moments with media. Joe expects all of those from the head coach at some point through the season. It’s called being human.

Joe’s not detecting any souring of Lovie towards media of any kind, though the offensive line woes, if they continue, might test Lovie’s patience as it relates to repeated questions from all angles.

You can hear the entire audio of the Lovie debate from Stroud, Jones and friends below. The Times duo seems happy to fire a few indirect arrows at their colleagues, and Joe has no problem with that. If you get offended as a media type in 2014, then you’re in the wrong business.

I watched the press conference and noted that Lovie in a playful way let the media know not to keep up questioning on the Oline decisions at this time.
I think Lovie made it clear that he appreciates opinions but he and his coaches are the decision makers and they haven’t decided yet.
I think he handled it very well…..wouldn’t want to be on the other end of a Lovie scolding!!!

  2. Louis Friend Says:

He’s not edgy, he’s just allergic to idiots.

  3. jo_mama Says:

If the Media can question Schanio they can question Lovie.

Again, I liked when we got him. And I am not expecting a winning season this year and I don’t fault Lovie for that.

    But…..

    His decisions to…..

    bringing in Leslie Frasier
Make McClown the Starter without any hint at competition
    Waiving Michael Williams
Not bringing in Incognito for a try out.
Losing Penn Davin and Zuttah and getting really nothing for them – don’t know why they could not rework deals.

I would be happy to go 6-10 and look good in our losses.

  4. Zam Says:

Of course Lovie is edgy, his team looked totally unprepared on offense, which was the big knock on him. He’s still unproven in that respect, and he’s clearly sensitive about it.

That morning show is really good too, such an improvement over sileo.

  5. Snook Says:

The media forgets that he’s not obligated to tell them anything really.

  6. Bucs Fan #237 Says:

The Tampa sports media is dumb… REALLY, REALLY DUMB.

I have had to listen to them for many years now… their judgement is terrible.

  7. flmike Says:

You are now starting to witness what those of us who spend a great deal of time in Chitown witnessed, the other side of Lovie…it just gets worse with time.

is joebagofdonuts your competitive reporting name or your twitter handle?

  9. Uncle Albert Says:

Tom Jones is a horses a$$.

  10. Sneedy16 Says:

    Still talking about Incognito? lol

  11. Buc the Haters Says:

IMEO (lol), we should’ve resigned Joseph for just above the league minimum and we definitely should’ve kept Zuttah. The Zuttah move pisses me off more than anything else we did this offseason. He would’ve been our best & most versatile lineman. SMH

  12. bucfanjeff Says:

If I were the HC and saw our OL play like that, I would be edgy too.

Notice he says “we’re trying to find the right guys with the rotation”? Let me translate that for you: “We don’t have starters at the guard position and we’re hoping one of these backup guards can play good enough to keep our QB from getting killed.”

I somewhat agree with you about this year and how they dealt with the oline and they traded mike Williams not waived still wish he was here though.
But here is where I disagree Leslie Frazier will be a very good coach for us, “mcclown” is still better than Glennon, and why the hell would we want incognito to poison our locker room when we can trade for a gaurd, pick someone else up, or play with what we have and sign or draft a quality starter next year

  14. Buchead407 Says:

Should’ve kept zuttah What did we get a 4th next year?

    ____________
Notice this means even after last seasons tape, when every average fan could tell you that its nonesense, the new L/L regime thought Cousins could be a legit starter.

Wasting valuable reps on him and a roster spot and Glazer money.
And some other players dont even get ONE chance.

Google Stephen White opinion on Cousins Bucs and you know, what they should have known.
    _____________
As many already said: L/L regime should be held accountable too and are guilty of stupid decisions.
Lets hope they better themselves or we could be shouting for another coach as soon as by the end of next offseason.

At least the on-field performance of the Defense gave more than HOPE.
Dont know about you people, but great defense is making me ecstatic!!!
    Let the hits beginn.
    Go Bucs!

  16. SAMCRO Says:

Already starting to see the signs of an unhappy Buc camp. Confidence is beginning to wane. Just keep chipping away media scribes, soon you’ll have the whole franchise second guessing themselves again. Putting the chip on their shoulder crap don’t work here. They need an aura of confidence surrounding them as they go into the season opener, and not the constant media driven drama. Usually when the media stays positive, the fans feel confident, the team feels loose, and confident, as they enter the season. This media behavior has been going on for quite sometime, but even more so today as they manipulate and spread rapid and sometimes rabid info on social media while sparking, and stoking the proverbial flames of controversy. Just give them room to breathe and Licht and Lovie will find a solution.

  17. louden Says:

+ the scouting department and/or GM make me angry!!!

when was the last time they actually did a good job drafting?

Of course its possible to miss on a player in the later rounds, but it the Bucs get it done, to miss on an obvious better option in every year that i followed them closely (there was a time i trusted them to know what they are doing).

But when you start following it, its just ridiculous!
Bucs are an historical poor managed team.

  18. louden Says:

Also, just hypothetical, Rob Chudzinski is currently Special Assistant to the HC with the Colts, would it be an promotion if we offered him an job as OC?

  19. louden Says:

    @ SAMCRO
players arent much effected by media. They care about: winning, money, and yeah some of course on good media exposure needing attention (Sherman), but if so, wrong reason to play football anyway.

If the coaches or managers confidence beginns to wane – its their problem.
A stuff making the right decisions won´t have that problem.

  20. Phillip Says:

    @Buchead407

5th and was already used in this years draft on either Edwards or Pamphile(SP?)

  21. DB55 Says:

I swear some of the people who post on these sites are working at one buc place. If they don’t want to hear critism or be held accountable go coach high school, everyone gets a participation trophy. Or go work for 35k per year oh wait you’ll still be held accountable and be criticized. Better yet Pop Warner needs coaches to teach the heads up program.

  22. Joe Says:

I swear some of the people who post on these sites are working at one buc place.

    Happened before.

  23. DB55 Says:

I know bc Gerald McCoy commented on twitter about something I posted a few months ago.

Who is more posion to a locker room Michael Sam or Richie Incognito.

If a locker room can hand Sam, I am sure they can handle Incognito.

I dont care who our QB is, want the best one. But lets have a competition.

Leslie Fraser??? Going on his track record as HC. Not very inspiring

  25. Jim Halk Says:

Lovey is not going to take the crap Schiano did from the press. He is and experienced coach and you forget he served his time in the war zone of Chicago.

  26. flmike Says:

Here’s a telling sign about Lovie and the media, when he was fired in Chicago after a 10 win season, no one, not a single media soul complained, no one in the local media said it was a travesty to fire a HC after a 10 win season or after 3 Play off appearances and a Super Bowl appearance, no one.
