Edwards And Omameh Join First Team Today
August 12th, 2014This week’s shift on the Buccaneers’ work-in-progress offensive line — Jamon Meredith to the bench, Oneil Cousins from right guard to left, and Jace Daniels into the starting RG role — is hardly anything that resembles a firm change.
Speaking moments ago before today’s practice to the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, Lovie Smith said rookie Kadeem Edwards and Patrick Omameh will work at guard with the first team this afternoon at training camp.
That’s nothing too new for Edwards and Omameh, but they weren’t in those roles yesterday.
Yes, the Bucs are deep in study mode when it comes to their guard candidates.
Lovie praised Daniels’ “consistent work throughout, from OTAs on.”
“If you continue to do good things you get a chance to do more,” Lovie said.
August 12th, 2014 at 4:38 pm
Holy sh*t… this is some ridiculous bullsh*t… Who does Lovie Smith think he is fooling? I mean come on, they just can’t be this stupid…
Can they?
Trade Zuttah? Sign Cousins? Pretend Jam on Meredith can start? Draft a RB in round 3?
This is some delusional buckshot or its a total smoke screen and we will be signing A. Boone at any moment…
Please tell me Light and Movie are not this idiotic…PLEASE!!!!!!
August 12th, 2014 at 4:40 pm
Sorry my phone sucks ass… Lovie and Licht….
August 12th, 2014 at 4:43 pm
Who cares really… if worrying about who the starting guards are gonna be is the biggest concern with the Bucs… then I say that it is much to do about nothing.
Look guys, Lovie Smith is going NO WHERE for at least 3 seasons no matter what happens.
The media will give him a pass for the first 2 seasons…
August 12th, 2014 at 4:47 pm
Why wouldn’t they want to explore all options here before trading draft picks and player(s) on top of spending top dollar for someone? You Monday morning qbs are something else.
August 12th, 2014 at 4:48 pm
Buc Fan if you don’t care then how are you a fan? This offense can do nothing if there is immediate pressure up the middle.
August 12th, 2014 at 4:49 pm
@ Mac
Don’t panic….have you forgotten?…..you are a Buc Fan…..you’re not supposed to panic until we are 0-8…….that’s what we have to beat to pace better than last year…..relax. Try sitting through 0-26…..you’ll develop an appreciation of what real losing feels like.
We can’t get all this done in one year…..imagine us next year after drafting Oline in the first 3 rounds.
August 12th, 2014 at 4:50 pm
A step in the right direction.
Something has got to change on that line!!!
August 12th, 2014 at 4:56 pm
“The media will give him a pass for the first 2 seasons…”
Did you read Shelton’s column? He’s not even giving them a pass for the 1st quarter of the 1st preseason game…
August 12th, 2014 at 4:56 pm
I say let Spence get some practice reps. I guarantee you that beast can at least run block. Low man wins. It’s why Sapp was our best blocking tight end.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:02 pm
Not sure why this is particularly shocking to anyone. Lovie had some terrible o-lines up in Chi-town.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:07 pm
The last GM got 5 years to build a team. I’m not going to condemn these guys before a single real game gets played.
If you weren’t complaining about Dom before game 1 on 2009, I hope you aren’t complaining now.
They deserve just as much leash as the last regime.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:08 pm
This is a miserable and completely avoidable failure. New regime is very disappointing. Every other team in the nfl says you have a chance when you have a good QB and oline. This regime thinks we have a chance to win with a mediocre QB/oline. Makes zero sense.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:19 pm
“If you continue to do good things you get a chance to do more,” Lovie said.
Translation: If you are a warm body, can stand in front of someone/anyone, you will get a chance.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:25 pm
Much “to do” about nothing? Hey, 237, its much “ado” about nothing, and the game starts at the line. That aint nothing……
August 12th, 2014 at 5:29 pm
Lol The media will absolutely not give him a pass for the first 2 seasons if we are losing. Neither will the fans.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:40 pm
Let’s wait until game 2 of preseason, shall we?
August 12th, 2014 at 5:41 pm
@Mac,
I am exactly with you. All of these moves seemed crazy at the time and are reaffirmed to be stupid as time goes on. Trade Zuttah for basically nothing. Draft a RB (the most loaded position on the team) when you need a guard. I love Lovie, but if this was the Dline he would not be playing these games. At the very least, he would have kept Penn and Zuttah and added the players he did to make more competition (just as he did with the Dline).
August 12th, 2014 at 5:46 pm
@Pawel (and anyone else who writes this comment) Says:
“…Let’s wait until game 2 of preseason, shall we?”
Why? The lack of talent at the OG spot is not something that just suddenly appeared. Everyone has been questioning it for MONTHS. I think we all gave Lovie a “benefit of a doubt” pass until it could be demonstrated that they had a plan. Well, apparently the plan is FLAWED, in the very least. Yes, it is one preseason game, but its not a new issue. In fact, Lovie has a rep for bad Olines. Do you suggest we wait until we are 0-4, or 0-8?
August 12th, 2014 at 5:47 pm
“Did you read Shelton’s column?”
Gary Shelton is a moron. He is a pessimistic Buc hating a-hole.
Whether he is giving Lovie a “pass” is irrelevant.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:48 pm
Lovie needed actual game film on the young guys, they have to earn their way on the field. The job is there for them to take, so he’s making them take it. Or seem like they’re taking it. Lol
August 12th, 2014 at 5:51 pm
They’re just trying out everyone and seeing who the best 2 guards on the roster are. No big deal really. It’s not the best position to be in, but I am of the belief that there is already 2 serviceable guards on the roster, you just got to find out which ones they are.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:52 pm
Good, at least these two have potential to develop unlike Cousins and Meredith who at this point in their careers just kinda are what they are. Bad O-linemen.
August 12th, 2014 at 5:56 pm
LOL…we can’t even get a decent preseason replay day/time on NFL Network. Monday morning at 3 AM (EST).
August 12th, 2014 at 6:03 pm
While I’m unsatisfied with the way Qb and OG were handled during the offseason, I’m giving Lovie at least 3 full years. So what if I am not happy with 2 things so far. Lovie’s past and the enormous accomplishments, IMO, in only a few months is enough for this guy to have confidence Lovie will get there sooner or later.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:05 pm
The media perpetuates constant controversy and disharmony like a perfect storm. They absolutely thrive on it while they suck the life-force from our team, and anyone who dares to see things differently than they do.. Most of the local media always see the glass half empty and pickup on the negative side of almost every issue, which in time only and slowly eats away at the feeling of trust between the Bucs staff and the local scribes. For once it would be nice to go into a season without controversy and let our guys do their jobs, and feel good about themselves. All the told you so’s can be said after we have at least played a couple of meaningful games. Remember, no one really knew Donald Penn until he was given a shot.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:10 pm
Some of you guys need to take your meds and RELAX!!!
It’s the 2nd preseason game coming up and you’re already bashing the coach?! Are you kidding me?!?!?!
For F’s sake, have a beer, sit back and wait til an actual game is played before you start beating your team up!!!
August 12th, 2014 at 6:16 pm
@ Louis Friend
Finally, a voice of reason!!!
August 12th, 2014 at 6:25 pm
It’s very apparent that most of the people in here don’t follow the rest of the league…find me 5 teams with no concerns on the offensive line…I’ll wait…it’s a unit folks…left defensive end is a question mark for us…#2 CB is a concern…WLB is a concern…#3 receiver if a question mark…nobody will start at guard and play like Meredith did the other night…it just doesn’t happen. So chill out.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:29 pm
The media guys in Tampa have disparaging comments set as hot keys on their keyboards. That’s what years of covering a beleaguered team does to you. To be optimistic is to be a homer and I’m pretty sure that gets you shunned from the cool kids table in the press box. That said, I don’t put a whole lot of stock in whether anyone is “up” or “down” on any player or coach anymore.
The fans I just don’t get. Bunch of chicken littles running around screaming that the sky is falling when 1) it’s a game, have some perspective 2) we’re talking about preseason here. The Redskins went 4-0 last year in the preseason and had a pick (given to St. Louis) ahead of us in the draft. They play multiple preseason games so they can work out the kinks. If we don’t see improvement from game to game then we can worry. 3) reiterated because it bears repeating: it’s a game. push yourself away from your keyboard and go take a walk and get a grip on things.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:34 pm
@Harry – So, what’s your solution? Are you going to storm the castle? You gonna go meet up with Jeff Tedford at 5:30 tomorrow morning to go over the offensive game plan and have all the coke you want? What choice do you have but to take a lude, sit back and just enjoy that we have football to watch again. Christ sakes man, we’ve been waiting to watch football for months now and you’re ready to spend the whole season upset because the first pre-season game was bad.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:37 pm
PSA: To all of our younger readers on here, that joke to Harry was in poor taste. Don’t do drugs kids.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:47 pm
Patrick, I have a hard time believing most of the commenters here actually believe the stuff they post. I compare it to the kid who acts out to get attention, they don’t care what kind it is just as long as someone responds to their nonsense. Perspective and rationale are words not in most posters vocabulary.
August 12th, 2014 at 6:51 pm
Great, so I get on here to get a break from dealing with my 3 year olds and the people I’m dealing with have the same conversational style. #goodtobeme
August 12th, 2014 at 6:59 pm
There were NO NFL CALIBER STARTING GUARDS IN THE DRAFT AFTER THE 1st PICK IN ROUND 2
August 12th, 2014 at 7:09 pm
@Patrick in VA Says:
“…Harry – So, what’s your solution? … What choice do you have but to take a lude…”
Haven’t heard that expression in a while, lol. btw, I miss our QB debates…
“My solution”, considering we knew we had this problem since before the draft, would have been to use the #3 pick on a guard. Having not done that, the choices now are far less desirable. Personally, I would sign Incognito – he would go for Vet Min, he is a very good guard and we have enough leadership in the locker room to keep him in check for one, or two years.
Failing that (which I realize is not going to happen) we now have to wait for castoffs from the Panthers/Texans/Raiders to sign as FAs – and we know what great Olines they all had last year.
August 12th, 2014 at 7:34 pm
Harry, good idea with Richie douchebag. Maybe 1 year vet min with option for 2nd depending on his play (obviously) and his behavior……..(obviously). I can think of 5 people off the top of my head that would put him in his place. I may be off my rocker but I have a feeling Edwards might make it at guard in this league. I would have to say no to Boone. We need the picks and the money for next year, which I hope we will be primed to make a serious playoff push.
August 12th, 2014 at 7:40 pm
@1Gr8Buc
I dunno, I think a lot of these people spend a lot of time looking for anything to take their anger out on. Beating up on their football team is better than beating up their wives. Ray Rice could learn something from these guys.
August 12th, 2014 at 7:46 pm
Haha good point Louis. I guess I didn’t think about that aspect of things.
August 12th, 2014 at 7:51 pm
I think next year we have a MUCH more realistic chance at taking BIG strides. I cannot be upset if this team is not perfect right now. Remember the lack of pass rush last year, I don’t think that will be a problem. I think our defense will have us in a lot of games. I think our play calling is going to be VERY creative. Our O-line is not going to look the way it looked Friday night all year. It will improve. In any case the team is on a steep incline and things will only get better from here. Lovie’s got a track record of building a competitive team and it will be nice to watch it from the ground up as a Bucs fan. Yes the O-line is disappointing but they have done a lot for this team in a very short period of time. Excited to see them form into a strong unit on both sides of the ball.
August 12th, 2014 at 7:55 pm
is there anywhere a list of UDFA which are currently not under contract?
and
since the Bucs are going for value and drafting best player available:
WHO THE HECK GETS PAID IN THAT SCOUTING DEPARTMENT??!!
are the Buccaneers, as part of the NFL business, just a money printing toy for the Glazers, or do they actually want to win?
Will the Bucs start Clayborn instead of Gholston?
Please no cast offs of teams that had young history of bad o-line – better searching on PractiseSquuuad of teams with good lines
Are 49ers okay with getting Clayborn + D.Martin in exchange for Boone and a draft pick
Will the Bucs ever have an dangerous pass-rush again?
Were people okay with the run-blocking of Lane?
Patrick in VA is using Sherridan tactics – has he learned more from him? if so – i am sorry for you
and why are you posting on here – if its not that important to you (bucs winning) as your comment can be summed up as:
PEOPLE STOP TO WORRY ABOUT THE BAD PLAY, ITS JUST FOOTBALL AND THE BUCS….
Well guess what: YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME
thats the reasoning that a site like this one can exist and JOE can make a living out of these annoying adds, because people care and want this team to be successfull and so they CAN DEMAND GOOD PLAY (good roster moves etc are needed for that)
WHY ELSE WOULD THERE BE A REASON TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON GAMES AND FAN GEAR???!!!
WHO WANTS TO PAY 400 IN ORDER THAT THEIR FAMILY CAN SUFFER THROUGH COUSINS-LIKE-TALENT-LEVEL
Hate to bring this up, this ugly S word, but in Shianos case the cousins-talent-level was in his coaching and sheme..
August 12th, 2014 at 8:00 pm
My guess is that, there is serious interest in acquiring Boone. They are just waiting to see what other teams are willing to offer. The first man’s offer at the bargaining table is always used to drive the price up for the next guy. If Boone’s price is too high, it will limit what we will be able to pay McCoy.
August 12th, 2014 at 8:08 pm
The Bucs’ starting guard will be from someone else’s waiver wire. Think Rich Ohrnberger, Jeff Linkenbach, Mike Pollak, Adam Snyder, Vlad Ducasse.
August 12th, 2014 at 8:37 pm
@Louden – I have a feeling you are the kind of guy that goes on similar tangents in other forums where you use the words “tax payer” and “voter” pretty liberally to justify your take on things.
Here’s the thing, there’s one team that gets to win it all every year. We all want it to be us every year and, unfortunately, it hasn’t been us in a while. We’ve got a coach that we’re hoping is going to be the guy to turn it around for us, or at least be the conduit that gets things headed in that direction. Joe has posted multiple times and Lovie has himself said that you can’t put your whole team together the way you want it in one offseason. He did a lot of shaking this offseason and I’m sure he will again next offseason to get things the way he wants them. In the meantime, settle down. Take it down a notch and enjoy being a part of it.
August 12th, 2014 at 8:43 pm
@Harry – I’m not sure that we’re in as bad of a spot as we think we are with this line. The guy that we got in the 5th has shown promise and if they have designs toward giving him starter time once the season starts then I’d say that they’re just taking it a little slower during training camp and preseason. The O-line that we saw in that preseason game was not the one that Joe was reporting over and over in his camp notes columns so maybe they just threw that line out there so they can bring along the other guards at a lower level and build their confidence. Notice that Glennon had a pretty decent amount of time to get rid of the ball with Omameh and Edwards in there.
August 12th, 2014 at 9:07 pm
Tomorrow I’m gonna start the “this is a rebuilding year” theme just to automatically gift Lovie a 1 year mulligan.
August 12th, 2014 at 9:23 pm
@1Gr8Buc Says:
“…I would have to say no to Boone…”
I have to agree. Yeah, trading for Boone might fix things some, but it would piss me off a little if we are giving up one of next years draft picks (plus a player?) when we could have used out 3rd rounder this year to draft a G (which I still don’t get, but then I don’t understand why we gave away Zuttah for nothing either when he would at minimum give us great depth since he can play both G and C).
August 12th, 2014 at 9:32 pm
@Patrick in VA Says:
“…so maybe they just threw that line out there so they can bring along the other guards at a lower level and build their confidence. Notice that Glennon had a pretty decent amount of time to get rid of the ball with Omameh and Edwards in there…”
That is a possibility. But since reps are so important, if Lovie thinks Edwards and Omameh are potential opening day starters, I would think giving them those reps would accelerate their learning curves. But maybe building their confidence is what is needed at present – only the coaches would know that. We will see. Even if you are correct, it shows a incredible lack of depth – not a single decent backup for OG on the team then. If one guard goes down, I am going to take your lude suggestion more seriously, lol
August 12th, 2014 at 9:34 pm
@Harry – If reps are the goal then putting the younger guards in with the second string in the first preseason game would be the recommended play. First stringers were out after the first quarter. That give Omameh and Edwards 3 quarters worth of reps, whereas Cousins and Meredith got 1
August 12th, 2014 at 9:39 pm
@@Patrick in VA Says:
“…Notice that Glennon had a pretty decent amount of time to get rid of the ball..”
btw You have to also factor in that at the time MG8 was out there showing off his Cannon, JAX was playing backups just like we were. So a little hard to evaluate their play. Hopefully they get some time with the 1’s on Saturday
August 12th, 2014 at 9:41 pm
@Patrick,
You make a very good point about Omameh and Edwards getting 3 qtrs of play. And bringing them along gradually would be the wise thing to do. Ok, I am a little hopeful.
August 12th, 2014 at 9:45 pm
@Harry – chalk one up for the good guys. I’ll be circling back around later on as well to claim victory in our QB debate when JF turns out to be a flop and Glennon is holding the Lombardi as he passes by you in the parade along dale mabry
August 12th, 2014 at 9:54 pm
Patrick, Patrick, Patrick, you must be taking something much stronger than ludes. Or is it that Virginia inner breeding we discussed before? You seem like a sane likeable guy, then you make crazy comments like that. Watch out for those guys that want to try you out for a sharp white suit that has extra long sleeves that tie in the back.
August 12th, 2014 at 10:05 pm
@Harry – crazy like a fox my friend.
August 12th, 2014 at 10:38 pm
What Lovie should have seen today is that Omameh should be starting LG. However, he also should see that Edwards is a starter quality Guard but he has to get stronger in the weight room first; so the Guard tandem this Saturday should be Omameh and Daniels. However, the Dolphins have an All Pro DE and Lindys rates Miami’s Defense as better than ours; so by the end of the game Lovie should realize he has to switch his Tackles, too. Then we are talking Great Improvement in our offensive line.
August 13th, 2014 at 2:48 am
Only retards think that if the Bucs drafted a Guard in the 3rd round instead of Sims that all the Oline problems would be fixed and he would be a Day 1 starter. Learn2football.
August 13th, 2014 at 4:54 am
Y’all need a tissue???
What up TBBF!

Tampabaybucfan and Louis friend. I just wanna thankyou for bringing sanity to this forum(obv aside from joes posts which are great)
