Get The Ball Out Quick

By doing some football math, we are coming up with a clearer picture of how the Bucs may use WR Mike Evans.

Football math reveals a clearer picture of how the Bucs may use WR Mike Evans.

Yes, Bucs fans have indigestion over what Tampa Bay may do at guard. The Bucs already had a hole at right guard and when Carl Nicks couldn’t make a go of it, well, that guaranteed two holes.

If there is an issue up front, then the best way to combat it is with speed. Speed in unloading the ball quickly. Short drops, maybe two-step drops, or obviously, a shotgun.

Yesterday, Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon touched upon something that Joe has noticed in training camp. That the quarterbacks are really, in certain formations, getting the ball quickly to running backs in the flat or receivers on the sidelines or in slants.

“There’s a lot of things I like [about Jeff Tedford’s offense],” Glennon said. “We really mix it up, we do a lot of different things. We get the ball in the playmakers’ hands and let them do their thing, and that’s what I like about it. The ball is out of our hands quick and we let the playmakers do what they can.”

Again, Joe has noticed the speed in which the quarterbacks, specifically starter Josh McCown, unload the ball in some formations. Now last week when Joe interviewed Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network, Jeremiah noted one of the best pass routes for Bucs rookie wide receiver Mike Evans when he was at Texas A&M was quick-strike slants.

You see how this is starting to piece together? The Bucs like quick-strikes in the Tedford offense and Evans is good on quick slants.

The problem is that Glennon is slow in analyzing defenses and does not get the ball out quick like Josh does.

Exactly Joes. Been a while since we had a QB that goes through his progression quickly, and the delivers a timing strike accurately. A little different than the staredown jumpball we are used to seeing. McCown looks precise and Glennon will reap the long term reward of his association, of course. I’m fired up. I bought a Freeman Jersey in 2010 after he threw 5 touchdowns against the Seahawks. I loved wearing that around Seattle. And then later not so much…

He was, last year, as a rookie! Doesn’t mean that Tedford doesn’t have him reading defenses much faster now. Its all in the scheme and Im sorry but our scheme last year sucked! He will have certain aspects of the defense to read, pre-snap, and will know where the ball is going before he even hikes it.

Joe, this is good and all for the passing game but damn, Im still worried about our running game. Guards are essential to the running game and I am not sold right now on our Guards being good enough at this point to have a successful running game. Tedford is known for being creative, so we will see how he gets around this issue. We might be a pass to setup the run kind of team now……

@Owlykat. We know you don’t like Glennon. Too bad so sad oh well.

Nice analysis, Joes. I think Evans’ speed is a bit undersold. Dude is a frickin thoroughbred and I think we will see him take advantage of some corners caught sleeping on the slant this yr.

  6. Harry Says:

We have some great weapons at the skill positions for the first time maybe ever? I love it. Evans on a slant, VJax for an outside jump ball, Wright/ASJ against the linebackers, and then our RBs. Pick your poison. Just hope that friggin line can get the job done!!!

I would be worried about Glennon only if the Joe’s and owlycat liked Glennon. Can’t wait for Friday to start the “real” evaluation.

When was Glennon named starter? :^/

greasy speed is what we need. chicken chasin speed!

seriously though, I would not be surprised to see what joe just touched on, but I would bet my left nut they throw some straight up the gut behind our so called weak gaurds. it would totally catch them off gaurd. hehe…..i meant to do that

run up the gut i mean

First, I think Tedford is going to revolutionize the game by playing nfl football without guards. Freaking amazing!

Second, I think Evans should have 3 plays for himself based off of these 3 routes. Streak, slant/post and the EZ fade route. Ease him into the program n utilize his strengths.

Finally, every time I see Evans run he reminds me of a giraffe, powerful Long strides. Lol

And since McCown is pretty old: Get an adequate successor plan quickly!

Glennon is perfect backing up though.

It’s a good thing L&L don’t listen to the MGM on here or we would have tied Glennon up to a Tony Romo contract already (I know it’s not possible) 🙂

Glennon loves the short dump off passes.. His problem was it was NEVER quick… He doesn’t ever show off his 19TD and 9INT ratio just his impressive 40 sacks in 13 games 🙂

Can’t wait to see him tearing it up against the 2’s and 3’s though I’ll need a good laugh come this weekend and Monday from the MGM.

You can run the ball without being a smashmouth team.

  17. Kevin Says:

You don’t need a dominant offensive line to have a good running game. You have to have a creative offense that the opposing defense cannot figure out. THEN you have a running game. Even with a stellar line, if all of the db’s know what is coming then ur gonna get 2-3 yards per carry. Not worried here…
