McCown Gets “Tremendous” Grade
August 3rd, 2014Has Tampa Bay gone from making everyone laugh to commanding respect at the quarterback position?
Can one training camp practice reveal such a transition?
Fight-instigating, barista-training, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball box score-reading Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame, thinks so.
He said, “Josh McCown looked tremendous” at Thursday’s practice at One Buc Palace. And King claims the Bucs drew laughs in NFL circles when they anointed him starting QB in March in a division with Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan. But now King is becoming a believer.
Ironically, in King’s highlight video from Bucs training camp, when he says, “Josh McCown looked tremendous,” the video shows McCown throwing a ball slightly off target to Mike Evans.
You can enjoy King’s analysis below. As for the “tremendous” take on McCown’s Thursday practice, Joe can say McCown didn’t do anything out of the ordinary for him and King is traveling the country watching NFL practices. So perhaps the Bucs counting on a miracle season from McCown isn’t that crazy?
August 3rd, 2014 at 8:36 am
I Think …… come the end of the season Josh McCown will not be the 4th rated QB in our division, not even close.
August 3rd, 2014 at 8:41 am
The Bucs finally should have a legitimate QB. Been a long time. Can’t wait
August 3rd, 2014 at 8:53 am
Newton has no weapons. Ryan went 4-12. Sorry, nothing can justify that from a veteran and supposedly “elite” qb. Survey says, Ryan isn’t even sniffing greatness. Brees is by far the best QB in the division.

Tedford’s Masterpiece “Josh McCown”
Tedford will have him eating pineapple by the end of the year.
Sorry MGM The Cannon will be busy with his clipboard and notebook. Glennon will get front row lessons on the path to Hawaii. Glennon will get his chance in 2016.
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:08 am
I think Brees is the clear cut #1. Even without weapons, Cam Newton has a solid grasp on #2. Conventional wisdom would put Matt Ryan at #2 or #3, but he just lost his most dependable weapon, Tony Gonzalez. Plus, Roddy White is 33 and showing major signs of age and injury. Harry Douglas emerged last season as a dependable WR, and Julio Jones should be 100% recovered from injury, but still, either Jones or Douglas goes down and the Atlanta passing attack takes a serious hit, they have ZERO depth. The one thing the Falcons did to help Matt Ryan is draft a LT, other than that it’s pretty much the same Falcons attack from last season, minus their hall-of-fame TE.
I think McCown has a legit shot at taking over the #3 spot.
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:09 am
Yes by the end of the season MGMers will bow to Tedford and specially to Josh McCown. But MGMers will also see the benefits for Glennon.
Next year the o-line will be solidify and Glennon will get his chance to practice in preseason. 2016 is not far away. I just want the best for Glennon. He is young. This is the perfect scenario for him. Go Bucs!!!
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:37 am
From a 14 year career journeyman to pineapple eater without taking a regular season snap for the Bucs?
And the MGMers are home skillets? Too funny!
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:39 am
Anything at the QB position is less laughable than Josh Freeman.
I am really looking forward to the season. Playoffs? We got a shot.
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:42 am
It’s a quarterback league and every year people talk about Drew Brees, tom Brady, aaron rodgers, even Matt Ryan and cam Newton, peyton Manning… All these guys have one thing in common but over the last 10 years it ain’t superbowls. Russell Wilson isn’t elite he doesn’t turn the ball over, Alex Smith won 11 games. What happens when Lebron gets to the playoffs and has no help. It still can’t be done without a complete team, which is why teams without weapons don’t go very far
Not sure the Lebron analogy fits. He put the Cavs on his back like the NBA has never seen getting them to the NBA finals. Joe wouldn’t mind seeing that around here.–Joe

The best chance that the Bucs have for success in 2014 is with #12 under center. Period. His experience alone makes him our best bet. Add the fact that no one, other than Coach Tedford, knows this offense better, and you have a chance to catch some teams off guard. This offense won’t show it’s full hand until the season is well underway, so it will be difficult for other teams to game-plan against, and if the defense plays as well as many football professionals believe it can, this roster could surprise some people. Frankly, as long as we’re truly competitive each and every week, I’ll be very satisfied. We’ve suffered quite a bit since December 2008. We deserve better.
August 3rd, 2014 at 9:58 am
“And King claims the Bucs drew laughs in NFL circles when they anointed him starting QB in March in a division with Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.” Rightfully so. He has been a backup his entire career practically. Talking to assembled local media after one practice and suddenly he is no longer the laughable threat he was the day before should be taken with a grain of salt. Let the guy who has never done it before actually do it on Sundays when all the games count before we start anointing him and calling him anything different than he has ever been in the past.

A cogent take from DallasBuc!
–Glad to see you’re taking your meds again. Welcome back to reality.
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:23 am
He did, last year starting 5 games for the Bears. He was the highest QB rating.
Who was laughing in NFL circles?
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:26 am
^^^just as cogent as all of my previous takes, including those about AC which you challenged me on. Med free and stone sober the whole way. Glad to see you are starting to allow reasoned argument to permeate your thinking!
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:27 am
@stanglassman
he played 5 games, they were bottom of the league defenses, and went .500 against them on a team that went to the playoffs. then we pay him like a backup ( a good back up, but still a back up).
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:29 am
Stanglassman- “Who was laughing in NFL circles?” …who cares? Do you challenge the assertion? It isn’t such a leap. Also, he may have started a few games against bad football teams but make no mistake, he was the backup the entire time while the starting caliber QB healed up.
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:33 am
@stanglassman
it was the same people that have been laughing the past 5 years, And some laughed because the only other thing to do was cry.
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:47 am
Cam Newton will be the 4th ranked and Matt Ryan and McCown battle gor 2nd. As much as I hate to say it there is no way Brees drops in those rankings unless he is just flat out injured and cant play…
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:50 am
Last year in Chicago, “2014 Pineapple McCown” did a decent job. Now we put him with similar personnel. Ironically the o-line might end up being the same flavor too. You add Tedford to the mix. Don’t forget he is a QB guru. They are adjusting this innovated scheme to fit “2014 Pineapple McCown.” I’m just being realistic here. This is not the Pineapple express.
Don’t worry Glennon will learn from this experience.
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:51 am
@DallasBuc: Your assertion that the Bucs won’t allow competition is still categorically stupi…err, incorrect. All you have to do is look, and you’ll find evidence contrary to your opinion. BTW, reasoned argument is my specialty, it is nothing new.
–“Med free and stone sober”!?!? Since you’re a Republican, I find that impossible to believe. Everybody knows that they’re all pill-popping alcoholics! *sarcasm*
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:52 am
Now Kevin is being realistic…I’m with you!
August 3rd, 2014 at 10:57 am
Piratic- where do you get these wild notions of my political affiliations from? I may live in Texas but I am no Texan. Tampon thru and thru. You must have me confused with someone else?
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:13 am
@Piratic- Don’t go there. You were wrong on your assumption earlier…lol
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:13 am
@DallasBuc: I’d bet money that I read one of you political rants right here on JBF, but consider the matter closed. I hereby recind, and apologize for, the politically-based bashing I’ve given you.
As an aside, it’s good to know that you’re not from Texas. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been to 49 states, and Texas is among my least-favorite places in the nation. I’ve been in Houston for the last two weeks, and being here has just reaffirmed my disdain for all things Texas. (Except Austin. Austin rocks!)
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:16 am
Dear Lord the MGM is accused of being delusional on JBF!?!? Listening to pineapple talk for a guy who has never been a successful starting QB in over a decade in the NFL and who is now on a team with an OC who has never called an NFL regular season play is beyond delusional and bordering on bath salts high! Freeman routinely looked good in camp too but transformed into a 6 Flags roller coaster ride once regular season rolled around. McCown needs to do something he has never done in his long NFL career…be consistently successful otherwise he is no different than guys like Chad Henne, Ryan Fitzpatrick or Kevin Kolb. At least Glennon has an excuse, he was a rookie with one quality WR and a bunch of 2nd or 3rd string guys for much of the season along with going up against Top 5 defenses in Carolina, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Seattle.
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:21 am
I read the fight-instigating part.
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:22 am
How is claiming McCown is going to be the 2nd best QB in the division less realistic than claiming he’ll be 4th? LMAO… Wow. Some of you are drunk off that koolaide. Not even the MGM would claim Glennon could be 2nd best.
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:22 am
Come on MGMers Give me more!!!! lol
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:22 am
More realistic**^^
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:26 am
True MGMers want McCown to start and play well.
It’s win-win.
The fans have a good season.
The Bucs have a good season.
McCown proves hes more of Rich Gannon than a one-hit wonder.
The Cannon develops like Brady or Manning did an isn’t thrown to the wolves prematurely ( like we love to do aith QBs in Tampa).
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:42 am
All the debate about 1st-4th best QB in the division is somewhat meaningless…..sure, QB is the most important position on the team, but it takes an entire team….what about the weapons each has….what about their protection?
It is possible to be the 2nd best QB with the 3rd best offense etc….and, it could be very well that Brees is the best and the other 3 are tied for 2nd…..what difference would it really make?
August 3rd, 2014 at 11:50 am
@TBBF – We are going nuts here without football! We can’t help but to go at each other.
5 more days… 🙂
August 3rd, 2014 at 12:08 pm
People please take a huge step back and think about what you are suggesting. Brees makes an appearance in the playoffs almost every year. Ryan has been multiple times including NFC championship game where he was was 1 questionable non-call away from the superbowl 2 seasons ago. Newton just led his team to a strong division championship looking scarier as he develops in each passing year. Then you have McCown who had a hand full of decent games against terrible defenses as the backup, not starter. Even the conversation topic is ludicrous! Open your eyes Buc fans. I know we all like Lovie smith and want to trust him but his track record on going to battle with starting QBs is really bad. He cut your hero McCown a few years ago in favor of the great Jason Campbell who can be found at the Whataburger around the corner as the assistant to the lead fry cook. Lovie sent McCown into retirement a few years ago. I would bet you in an objective QB competition his brother Luke would beat him out for the job. Remember him? Stronger arm and more accurate. Fight back the homerism and use some common sense!

————————————————————————–
Yeah, but he only was 4-4 on the remaining 8 games as a rookie, against defenses that were not ranked in the TOP FOUR in the entire league.(sarcasm) BTW, Matt Ryan went 0-6 against those same top four defenses, which means that he was 4-6 against the remaining lesser defenses on their schedule (practically identical to the Bucs schedule).

August 3rd, 2014 at 12:45 pm
Against that murderer’s row of defenses on their schedule, nobody is going to have a great stat sheet this year. Glennon and McCown would both struggle early, at least in rankings and stats. Gonna be a tough go for the QB at first, then it will get easier. No pro bowl, no miracles. We just need to find a way to win a couple of those early season games.
For all the ‘Newton sucks’ talk – and I agree he’s not a true franchise QB – he actually gets the best free bump in the division since he doesn’t have to play against his own front 7. Most people don’t remember that.
August 3rd, 2014 at 4:02 pm
The McCown from last year is the McCown we are getting,go to camp and watch him he is sharp as hell. When u look the stats up you will see that last season was his biggest chance to ever play he put up a 105 qb rating, he hasn’t got alot of playing time before that, thales state that sticks out is after last season his career qb rating is 101.that says alot but watching him in person is all you have to do if you don’t believe me, he is light years past Glennon
August 3rd, 2014 at 5:52 pm
Cam Newton, he will never win anything. The Carolina defense took them to the playoffs. Newton doesn’t have the personality or the leadership ability to take a team on his back. Jury is out on Ryan. Four wins is pathetic and he lost his Hall of Fame tight end. Brees is a class act but the one year he didn’t have his brilliant coach, he was just average. This is all words. Nobody knows how these guys are going to perform. I wouldn’t bet on either Cam or Ryan getting close to the playoffs. New Orleans and Tampa have the best overall rosters but injuries could change that assessment. Don’t be ridiculous. There is no need (or foundation) to predict anything. Just be patient and wait and see.
