Tommy Streeter Continues Solid Play
July 29th, 2014Joe, as always, is pestered on Twitter, “What player is impressive?” (through 3 1/2 practices). For Joe, the answer is clear. That guys is wide receiver Tommy Streeter.
While Bucs fans want Joe rave about Jeff Demps, that is just not the case. Yes, Demps is quick. Who didn’t know this? Has Demps made a couple of splash plays? Sure has. But he has also shown that ball security remains an issue for him.
Streeter was off Joe’s radar. Streeter never jumped out at Joe in OTAs or minicamp, where he got a lot of work due to minor injuries to Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans. But he sure has in training camp.
Streeter, 6-5, who played college ball for the Miami Hurricanes, has made a splash play or two as well this summer. What has separated him from Demps is consistency. Granted, we are talking about a terribly small sample size, but Streeter has made ordinary catches and tough catches each and every practice.
Let’s just say it isn’t just Joe’s eyes that Streeter has shown for. So too has Bucs coach Lovie Smith seen Streeter’s work.
“For receivers, if you’re any good, you get a chance,” Lovie said. “Odds are, you’re going to get balls thrown your way. He has made a few plays. We have seen definite improvement in him.”
Again, we are talking about such a small sample size here. Yes, Streeter looks like a keeper, after 3 1/2 practices. There is still a month to go before the final 53 cuts are made and four preseason contests are to be played. But Streeter, a former sixth-round pick of the Ravens in 2012 (zero career catches) is sure making a push to force a tough decision at the receiver position.

Key word: consistency. A winning trait.

The key for Streeter will be special teams….Jackson, Evans, Herron, Murphy will make the team…….Competition is with Streeter, Dawson, Page, Shepard, Patton, Gettis, Hawkins & Owusu.
Its hard for me to see us keeping more than 6 WRs with our RB & TE situation.

Streeter looking good adds to the tough decisions for Bucs coaching. Just from reading about all these new players and the ability they have shown makes the final roster selections difficult. Many of the new players sound impressive. Other teams will get some of these standout players before the regular season starts. The building depth of the Bucs is very encouraging.

I’m not sure Louis Murphy makes the team, I think the only 2 definites are Jackson and Evans. Yes, Herron has the upper hand on a spot, because he was drafted, nobody likes to dump their own draft picks-makes them look incompetent. After that, Streeter, Murphy, Page-special teams, Owusu, and Dawson are the main competition for the final 4 spots. I think Streeter makes it over Murphy if this continues and the last spot comes down to Page vs. Dawson.

Sometimes it takes a little while for a WR to get it. Three years is usually about the right amount of time. Physically, Streeter has a skill set on par with ANYBODY in the NFL…6’5 215 lbs, 4.35 40, can jump through the roof. If is finally getting it, watch out!

I inquired here about Streeter during the OTA’s and your comment back Joe was that he didn’t really stand out against the competition.
Glad things are changing given he’s got a nice combination of size and speed.
We need someone with both size and speed on the outside. Murphy and Owusu just give you the speed.
I’m wonder about Owusu’s hands and durability. He was a camp darling last year too.

TBF, second that on carrying 6 WR’s, and one of the 5 should be the punt return guy. (Paige?).
Wright, ASJ and even Myers can run routes. Sims could play slot if someone goes down too.
Pretty sure that 6th WR position will go to an extra pass rushing DE like Means.

We will see how he plays with the lights on him. Does anyone on JBF remember, Ed Gant. Npt saying that Streeter is ole Ed but there are some similarities.

murphy will make this team ,he is a vet an a proven player.

I think it would be very helpful to have him on the team in case jackson or evans miss any time. That is if he proves he can win matchups…

Joe
I think the keepers are those that hang on to the ball, a receiver that can’t catch is of no use and will just break our hearts.

On August 31, 2012, Streeter was placed on Injured Reserve because of a foot injury while with the Ravens. Very nearly a year later, on August 25, 2013, he was waived by them.
So he didn’t make the final cuts his first year because of the Ravens (put in IR), and then they cut him the following year for final cuts. I don’t know if he was healed by then.
Apparently not, because he did not join another team until this year, with us.
Once heralded as one of the top WR prospects in college. Fell to the 6th round anyway. Not sure why.
But the point is, no one has really gotten to see what the kid is capable of until now.
Interesting.

Not sure why Joe keeps trying to drag Demps through the mud while Lovie continues to praise him (ala yesterday during his press conference). Not sure what an article about Streeter has to do with Demps who is a running back. In any case, I will continue to say it…..this is the only site bashing Demps.’
Making it clear that Demps has had ball security issues since April is not “bashing.” The guy has made impressive plays, and impressive fumbles. –Joe

Wow tiny tim. Your gaytor colors showing. Geez. Joe was talking about Buccaneer players who has been doing well in training camp. And yes we know that the media should NEVER speak negative of a Florida gator player. How dare you Joe! But yes we have heard a lot about Demps splash plays. Also we have heard (do I dare speak negative of a gator?) his bad habits of dropping the ball. Sorry.

Here’s to hope!

@ Buxfan – No, I am not a gator. And I am not a kiss up to Joe. I am a Nole,…. thanks for asking. As I stated, this is the only site that keeps hammering Demps so called ball security issues. I believe other sites and media outlets would be reporting the same thing if it was so obvious, but I don’t hear or see it from anyone else. I see the opposite of what Joe is reporting here. Hence thats why I say its bashing. Sorry Joe.
