Licht Omits Gholston From Depth Chart
July 27th, 2014It’s the time of year to overanalyze anything that comes out of the mouth of the Bucs general manager and head coach. (Yeah, Joe does that all the time, but there’s more urgency now.)
And yesterday, while speaking on WDAE-AM 620, Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht made a couple of interesting revelations via what he said — and didn’t say.
Asked by co-hosts Tom Krasniqi and Ronnie Lane to discuss depth at defensive line.
Licht offered up praise for Da’Quan Bowers reporting in the best shape of his career. Then he proclaimed Adrian Clayborn to be the clear top dog — for now.
“He, Adrian Clayborn right now, he hasn’t shown anything to not be the starter,” Licht said. “He plays hard. We’re excited about him.”
Then Licht said the new regime is pumped up about second-year man Stephen Means.
“Means is a player that I’m really excited about. Lovie and I had a lot of conversations during [spring practice]. He said, ‘hey, this guy, where’d he come from?'”
But what about second-year man Will Gholston, the starter at the position to close last season, one of the rare bright spots in the season from hell?
Joe’s not sure if Licht simply forgot about Gholston or, perhaps Gholston has much to prove to his new coaches. Thank goodness the pads come on for the first time today. Let’s get this stuff settled on the field.

I think he probably just forgot about Gholston. The guy is super talented but raw, so if he can just hang back on the roster and develop, there’s no doubt he will be a player for us down the road. Just all depends if he’s afforded that time. To be honest, I don’t think much of Means. doubt he will make any impact during his bucs career. He just seems to be over-matched at this level. Would love it if he proves me wrong though. He does have that prototypical size that Lovie looks for, so he has that going for him.

Definitely reading too much into this.

Can the news just create itself without the media and those alike trying to create it? Just a thought…..

Let the Psych Ops begin.

I don’t think there’s anything to it, he simply could’nt name everyone…I’d be shocked if Gholdson didn’t make the team…With that said, I like Steven Means a lot he has the speed off the edge that Lovie drools over…It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out once the pads come on…

Interesting report that Bowers was playing inside yesterday with the second team. To me Gholston is better suited there on third downs.
As for Means, all I have ever seen was his ability to be swallowed whole by an able OT. Maybe he thrives as an edge rusher but I’d opt for Sutton who has better size.
Camp time will be telling.

Maybe we are secretly converting Gholston to Guard!!!

Way to squeeze an article out if a absolutely nothing. The guy only mentioned 3 ends, they haven’t talked much about Michael Johnson either.
Where are the Warren sapp nuggets

I’m with Tiny., he didn’t mention Johnson either. Omg!! He’s a bust.. Why did we target him? Come on Joe. Let things play out. There’s enough going on without making stuff up. You expect more out of your readers so we expect more from you.

The simplest explanation is usually the best. Like leaving the R out of chart.
