Lovie Smith wasn’t upset the first practice of training camp was shortened by lightning.

The Bucs were supposed to have a 150-minute practice session to open 2014 training camp Friday. Mother Nature played a rude host, with two lightning delays, the second effectively ending practice.

Joe isn’t sure the Bucs got a total of 30 minutes of work. The first session was nine minutes when the lightning alarm sounded. The second time the Bucs took the field, practice may have been 20 minutes.

Joe noticed in comments section of various stories last night that fans were miffed because Lovie didn’t hold the session earlier in the day to avoid the late afternoon rainy weather that is common around these parts.

Lovie suggested that yesterday’s events helped the team learn to overcome another obstacle that they very wall could face early in the season when the Bucs host the Stinking Panthers at the Stadium on Dale Mabry to open the season, at 4 p.m.

“As much as anything, you want to get that first practice underway, which we did, able to get a little bit of individual work in,” Lovie said. “That’s not an ideal first day for us, but as I told the football team, when we play Carolina [Panthers], we could get a rain delay. You have to be able to go in and then come back out. Everything that you do in the offseason, the preseason and training camp is to get you ready for the football season. We did get a little bit of individual work in, as I said. Tomorrow is another day, we’ll get back on schedule and hopefully get some better work in tomorrow.

“You do go through adversity throughout a football game, this is just a part of it. For me, we’ve dealt with it, we’ll come back tomorrow, there are a lot of practices, we have plenty of time to do what we need to do.”

Perhaps Lovie is trying to motivate Team Glazer to get the ball rolling on a rumored indoor practice facility? If worse comes to worse, Lovie can always use The Fruitdome in St. Petersburg like Raheem Morris often did. Or, pull a Chucky and use a parking garage for walk-throughs.
