McCoy Wows At 6 A.M.; Contract Talks Continue
July 23rd, 2014The Bucs want to give Gerald McCoy a big fat new contract.
The only question is when and how much. Jason Licht addressed that this evening on WDAE-AM 620.
Licht said McCoy is a “unique situation” because McCoy is “not complaining about the money he’s making this year,” combined with the fact he’s extraordinarily dedicated.
The GM shared stories of McCoy working at One Buc Palace alone this summer running “gassers” with a helmet on, including the day after his twins were born.
“He’s one of a kind,” Licht told host Steve Duemig. “We’re talking. We haven’t put a timetable on it.”
Joe suspects the Bucs will show some urgency. Tampa Bay has about $10 million available under this year’s salary cap. That’s a lot of coin to get wisely creative in crafting a new deal. McCoy is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Don’t feel bad for Gerald, if you recall he got one of those old “bank-buster” rookie contracts that were wiped out by the new CBA.
He basically missed two years due to those injuries so he collected huge money without any bodily wear-and-tear….
He will and should get paid again but if it doesn’t get done now, bet they can do it after the season with a bigger salary cap coming next year.

Is there any rule against a player like McCoy getting a lifetime contract? Something along the lines of “we’ll pay you 10 million per year for the next 5 years and 1.5 million for the next 50 years” or whatever the terms would be. That way you’re able to get your superstars at a price where you’re able to build a team without breaking the bank and the player knows that they’ll be good to go for life.
Just a thought that seems like they’d at least explore. Rather than having to dump 95 million on him in the next 5 years

Check out this story on the giants day one of training camp. 90 minutes in 85 degrees, and all these dudes on IVs and not finishing practice.

McCoy running gassers in a helmet. On his own all summer. He is going to destroy people in the 4th quarter. Why? Because he is an awesome talent, but more importantly, works harder. Unbelievable fitness is what you owe the fans when you get paid. fat lazy useless. otherwise number 4 on joebucsfan worst bucs ever.

Sign and Pay the Man. He represents everything any organization would ever want out of a high profile, face of the franchise player. Acknowledged that he had injuries issues early on, but he put in the time and effort to be the best while also doing a lot of community service work. Gerald has become the class of the NFL for DT.

Sounds great, just don’t get hurt again, please.

Joe
Besides having a year more experience, how much is Johnson and company going to free him up?

What happened to all the Tampa Bay fans from two plus years ago who were screaming that McCoy was a bust? They never seem to write in any more. I miss all their intelligent commentary.

I keep hearing that until Suh’s deal is done McCoy’s agent won’t do a deal because he doesn’t want to be embarrassed.

They have to lock him up. I honestly thought he was a bust after his two injuries, boy I am SO glad to admit I was wrong!

Yes.
#1 Player salaries when counting years towards the cap top out at 7 years, I believe. This is to prevent teams from circumventing the cap and giving them a Steve Young USFL LA Express contract where he’ll be getting $1 mil a year for the next 40 years.
#2 It is circumventing the salary cap which was created to create balance in the league and to limit spending. We would surely be penalized for anything that circumvents the cap.

@Brandon – thanks for clearing that up for me

They haven’t been done in a while, but i think Vick was the last player to get a “lifetime” contract. 10yr/$130M w/ $37M guaranteed. That was back in 2005.
Reference
I’m sure a contract like that using today’s money would be astronomical.

Of course he’s not complaining, he’s making boat loads of cash on that horrible rookie deal still
