One of the sickening moments of 2013 just got a little sicker
It’s the time of year when Joe has time to drink beer and listen to lengthy interviews of backup quarterbacks on teams based outside Tampa Bay.
Yes, Joe cracked a cold one and listened to former Bucs QB Dan Orlovsky talk to Ross Tucker about a variety of NFL topics recently.
Sadly, Orlovsky didn’t share juicy nuggets about his last two seasons in Tampa Bay, but one comment he made shed light on the terrible gameday coaching of Greg Schiano and Bill Sheridan.
Orlovsky, a 10-year veteran known for his film study who often has been talked about as a future NFL coach, shared how brilliant a receiver he believes Saints WR Marques Colston is.
Bucs fans will remember Colston caught the key ball in the Bucs’ Week 2 loss to the Saints last season. Inexplicably, Leonard Johnson was covering Colston with the game on the line in the closing seconds, while Darrelle Revis was on rookie Kenny Stills.
Sheridan regretted his decision. And Orlovsky made it sound worse this week talking to Tucker.
“You just watch the film, and if you took the top-10 quarterbacks in the NFL and had them play receiver, I feel like that’s how he plays wide receiver,” said of Colston’s route running and feel.
“He just sees everything at a super intelligent level. He’s always running the right route, but in the right space the right way. How he turns his body. He’ll settle into windows that maybe on paper he’s not supposed to settle in. But he does because he sees that the window or the spot is there, rather than where it — quote unquote — ‘should have been.’ He’s just really intelligent. and you seem him getting open and making catches that the play’s not designed to do.”
And the New Schiano Order assigned Johnson to this perennial superstar with the game on the line and a $1-million-per-game cornerback on the field. Surely, Bucs coaches saw the same elite play Orlovsky saw from Colston.
It’s still a head-shaker, on par with Adrian Clayborn covering Darren Sproles out of the backfield.

I felt like the momentum of that game shifted when the refs made the questionable helmet-to-helmet call on Clayborn’s sack of Brees. After that things seem to fizzle out.
But to your point I agree, there is no way Johnson should have been on Colston with the game on the line. Schiano was a great talent evaluator, but a bit too much “my way or the highway” on game day.

Joe, it seems that you are really scouring the interwebs for any reasons to be optimistic with your ‘official prediction’ for the season; and while I can appreciate that, I’d say there is plenty of reasons to be optimistic already… I sure you realize that even with last year’s circus, lesser talent, & poorer coaching, we were only a few points short in a handful of games (not far from being 9-7 or 10-6)… And we’ve upgraded everywhere (except maybe OL)… Cmon, Joes, just man up & throw out a 10-6 prediction. Or look silly in a few months when nobody can stop us from scoring.

It is that reason why I didn’t think Revis deserved the pro bowl last year. Way to often Revis was assigned to the lesser receiver. I agree that Johnson should never had been covering Coulston, but if you go back and watch all the games, especially early on, that happened a lot. In fact, Revis never even swapped sides. He always played the defenses left side. Schiano and Sheridan protected Revis way too often, while he supposedly was still getting in shape. If you looked at Revis’s stats last year, there were other corners who deserved to eat pineapple over him. That had to be the worst trade in Bucs history. We gave up way more than he was worth for his one year rental.

Joe doesn’t currently have an “official prediction” and when he does, it is not in any effort to be either positive or negative, but to honestly attempt to project what he sees the Bucs doing this year. No agenda.

It must be “pile-on Schiano day” here. There were a lot of “curious” decisions last year.
Who was on who probably doesn’t matter anyway when playing Brees. Whoever wasn’t lined up opposite Revis was getting the ball, it’s not rocket science!
I do like the explanation about Colston’s decision making. Couple a smart receiver with a good quarterback and you’re going to win some games.

I have no issue with the Schiano news/analysis. The last game we played, he was the head coach. We have not seen a single play of Buccaneers football that meant anything since he was on the sidelines. It’s a slow time of the year, just be happy the Bucs coverage isn’t one or two articles a day like most sports sites. Now go cry about it.

I enjoy all this piling on of Schiano, because it further reinforces what all of us with common sense already knew. I’m very interested to hear players tell how bad the environment was in the locker room with that clown in charge. I’m also very interested to hear players discuss how poor of a game day coach he was. I want to hear more, at least until the season starts. I want to hear more until the last of the “he didn’t have enough time” people, or the “he’s a great talent evaluator” people are gone.

TBH we do need a reminder of the crap we had, if not we take everything for granted. We have a VERY VERY credible coach and one that holds accountability to players and staff. Frazier will be able to get more productivity than *Chirp Chirp* Sheridan.
Joe’s not beating a dead horse with a stick with these articles, we are getting some insight from the players. And we all know the players have something to say, but it will be unprofessional to actually saying it.

Good grief. Yes he was a bad gameplay coach, but he preached fundamentals and did give us some damn fine looking draft classes. Some of you fellas need to let the past go. I’m sure he did his best and what he thought was right. It didn’t work out, we have Lovie Smith, let’s turn the page.

Right before training camp started last year I remember thinking this felt like a real team for the first time in a long time. Amazing to see and hear how bad things really were. Hope the sames not true for Lovie.

I’m afraid you’ll have to hope Joe bans me since I have no intention of leaving no matter how many anti-Schiano or anti-Glennon articles surface. You see this is very much an entertaining, opinion driven site with plenty of Bucs news to boot. You may think you are some sort of football scholar, but most of us are realistic enough to realize we are merely passionate Bucs fans that have various opinions yet enjoy coming here to rant, vent, learn, antagonize, share Bucs news, and speculate all things Bucs.

So because he’s no longer the coach, you don’t want to know what was happening when he was in charge? That makes no sense to me whatsoever. It’s not like we are talking about a team from 20 years ago – many of the same players are still on the team!!! These details that are emerging are interesting, sorry.
He preached fundamentals??? LMAO!!! He ran high school drills, and he “led” a defense with 3 All-Pros to average. Congratul-freaking-lations!!!! You just wait and see what Lovie does to our defense this year, then let me know what benefit those “fundamentals” did for us. Why would anyone outside of his family defend him??? He had fine draft classes, yeah sure! I’m sure he sat back in his Dr. Evil chair and made all the selections, while everyone else served him drinks. You go ahead and keep believing that.

Wow, aren’t your panties in a nice wad today. I didn’t literally want people to leave the site, but just realize how ridiculous their defense of Schiano really is. He wasn’t great at anything. He wasn’t even good at anything. I don’t for the life of me understand why anyone who was around for last two seasons could defend him. He got rid of talented players (Blount, Bennett, and even Talib), he treated his players like high school players, he acted like a complete buffoon on the sidelines, he made unbelievably stupid strategies and game day decisions, and he was the ultimate embarrassment to this franchise. He is most known for bum rushing the kneel down, which appropriately happened during losses! Yeah, let’s build him a statue! I love to debate all things Bucs – it’s what makes this site great. I don’t want people to agree with everything I say – that would be boring. But this is one issue I can’t figure out how anyone could feel differently, and not be absolutely thrilled he’s gone.

Your memory is incredibly short. You’ve already forgotten how bad off this team was under Raheem Morris. Fumbles were a huge issue. Tackling was a huge issue. Discipline was a huge issue. Heck, even behavior was a real issue (Talib cussing out Morris, hitting opposing players between whistles; Trueblood playing dirty and getting penalties). We had players committing crimes and quiting on the team during games.
They weren’t acting like pros at all.
Schiano was a sledge hammer, but an effective one. Of course those with the team think it’s better now. The trouble makers are gone, the roster is better (thanks to Schiano) and their new coach isn’t a drill sergeant.
Schiano was needed. Morris set the team back half a decade or more. Bringing in a blunt instrument shortened that time by a year or two.
He was right when he said they left the team better than it was before he and his staff came…because it was a mess.
Lovie Smith would have no chance at the playoffs if it were not for Greg Schiano. Notice it was not guys Greg brought in that Lovie got rid of (aside from Revis, who we all know was about money; Dominicks job)? There is a reason for that.
Greg Schiano is to Lovie Smith what Sam W. was to Tony Dungy.

Schiano should coach Jones Community College, so they could make a seamless transition from Ray Perkins.
Except that’s unfair to Ray, who accomplished way more than Schiano did.
The man was as poorly equipped to coach an nfl team as Raheem Morris. Very hard to do.
Wyche was also way better.

Apparently my memory isn’t as short as yours. Yes they were bad under Morris, but they also were only one season removed from 10-6 when he got fired. Schiano had 4 wins in his last season, only one more than Raheem, even though Schiano got the benefit of high priced free agents (which is so conveniently forgotten, along with how GMC was hurt under Raheem). As for Talib and Trueblood, they were doing that kind of stuff long before Raheem. Do you really not know Talib’s history, or is this just convenient to back up your point?
Raheem had to go. That’s also not debatable. I’m not going to defend what’s not worth to defend. However, just because we had Raheem doesn’t mean Schiano was the right guy for the job. So are you telling me that had we hired Lovie right after Morris, he wouldn’t have been able to beat 11 wins in 2 seasons? Sure Schiano was needed, needed like a club foot.
Schiano was an absolute cancer to this team in ever sense of the word. This “talented team” he built has been gutted, has it not? We’re going to have at least half of our starters to be new guys – kind of defeats that argument, no? Comparing him to Sam Wyche is probably the funniest comparison of all. Wyche was within minutes of a Super Bowl in freaking Cincinnati!!! Schiano couldn’t even win the Big East! He had more MRSA infections on his team than wins last year!
What exactly are you smoking to give Schiano any credit for what Lovie is about to do? Do you have any idea how absolutely ridiculous and stupid that sounds??!! You also probably believe that Schiano is the reason GMC is great, Vincent Jackson is a great guy in the community, and Derrick Brooks made it to the hall of fame this year. So in your twisted world, everything good that happens is a result of Schiano, and everything bad is because of Raheem! Got it, and why don’t you go ahead and take another hit while you’re at it.

Really? That’s such a warped sense of reality, it’s truly laughable. Schiano was only here for two years!!!!!!! Oh my goodness, this really isn’t that complicated!!! I would point out that the roster hasn’t been set yet, and I can almost guarantee you some of these “Schiano guys” won’t be on the team against Carolina. Care to wager that? You feel good about Leonard Johnson making the team? How about Skye Dawson and Chris Owusu? It’s funny that you think it’s a major accomplishment that guys that were drafted less within two years are still on the roster. My, how the bar has been set low.

I find it comical that Schiano gets pile driven near unanimously as the sole reason that the team sucked while he was head coach. I have even criticized him before, but not to this extent. I liked the hire originally and still think he would of turned the team into a winner given the time. Everyone needs a scapegoat it seems. Don’t bother telling me I am full of crap, it is just an opinion and I’ll keep it.

Buccaneer Bonzai is right on.I’am not any coaches fan,but Schiano cleaned the outhouse created by Morris and saved the organization a ton of money by getting rid of the football fraud Freeman.Maybe if the Glazers had hired a coach sooner, after Morris, that coach could have hired competent coaches.Looks like the Glazers learned their lesson by the Quick hire of Lovie.

He’s not the sole reason, but he’s the biggest reason. It all starts at the top, and he made it very clear from day one that he is the man at the top. As for him turning the team around with time, how much time do you think it would have taken? How many years would it have taken for him to realize that he is no longer coaching against UCONN? What part of our season last year (aside from the 4 dreadful teams that we beat) would lead you to believe we were headed in the right direction? Was it the amount of times we “almost” won? Was it the free agents banging the door to come and play for him? Was it the fact that he took one of the most talented defenses in the league and made them average? Please, enlighten me.

I gotcha, but it’s irrelevant to the discussion. His second year, he had time to hire whoever he wanted, but he still brought in more guys from Rutgers. No sought after NFL assistant coach would want to be a part of his dictatorship, especially when the dictator knows less than some water boys! Don’t forget Schiano was not our first choice, probably not our second or third either. However, the fact that he was hired was a colossal mistaken, and there is absolutely no excuse for it happening.

Gruden had a big ego but he wanted to WIN, Schiano just wanted to be in command of all the people beneath him. No more eggshells in the floor at One Buc Palace.

You have no idea how much I’m embracing the present. Lovie was my #1 choice, and I couldn’t be happier with that has happened so far (except for Revis, but I’m getting over it). There is no one that could possibly be more excited than me for the Lovie era. This guy is going to do great things in Tampa!

The Bucs are in a better spot than they were, how they got there isn’t as important as that they are.

Got to remember, Shciano was NOT the first choice, Chip Kelly was. They had to settle for Schiano. Doesn’t make it any more of an acceptable hire, But I thought they had a nice plan B at the time. Then again I was under the impression that ANY football coach hired by an NFL team would have their strategy/ playbook checked out and approved so that they could at least be competitive in this league. Schiano’s defensive and offensive schemes were just a step behind everyone else in the NFL. That along with a few other things like his anal retentive behavior and its clear to see that Schiano was a poor fit from the start.
At the same time you can’t really fault Schiano for taking a job that was offered to him, more blame needs to be put on the guy who offered him the job to begin with!!! (lookin at you Dom, or the Gazers though I highly doubt it was them). True?

Are you equally upset about the play of our Bucs? You know, the guys that are ON the field. Maybe we sucked in the second half because, wait, what did Tony Dungy used to say, “we didn’t execute.” How many times did we watch Desean Jackson run right by Revis? Oh wait, that’s Schiano! How many sacks did Penn give up to the Rams? Oh, right, Schiano! Davin Joseph=turnstile, Schiano. Goldson head-hunting, that’s Schiano too! Freeman, oh Freeman. That mess of a human being also blamed on Schiano!
Let’s take a step back for a minute. I don’t think that anyone here believes that Schiano was the next Belichek. He’s gone for that reason. Let’s not forget that even though he may not have made too many friends, football players are paid to perform…REGARDLESS. Schiano’s in the past and whatever sick pleasure you derive from being vindicated is your cross to bear. The rest of us Buc fans will take our passion forward and view the past as just that, PASSED. He brought nothing to this team but small college level schemes and humiliating loses. Whoever hired him should get 10 lashes in town square.
