Gerald McCoy speaks out
The NFL Network celebration of Gerald McCoy last night included McCoy himself, talking about changes at One Buc Palace and explaining why he didn’t vote for himself too high on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2014.
McCoy ranked 28th on the list and was the highest-rated defensive tackle in the league.
“I don’t ever try and boost myself. I let other people have opinions about me,” McCoy said of why he didn’t vote for himself as a top-20 player. Not all players get to vote.
“And if I don’t feel like their opinion is high enough for me, then it’s my job to prove them wrong.”
Warren Sapp was on the air with Kurt Warner and McCoy for the chat about No. 93 and the Bucs, and Sapp was smiling like a proud father, calling McCoy a great student. (Enjoy the video here.)
McCoy is fired up for what 2014 holds. Hopefully, Greg Schiano covered his ears.
“There’s a difference in having a coach who knows what it takes to win,” McCoy said.
McCoy said several times that Lovie Smith’s defense is “tailor-made” for him.
“He brought back the old, gritty, let you know what we’re going to do and hit you in the mouth Tampa-2 defense,” McCoy said.

Hopefully it’s not the version of the Tampa 2 we last saw when Monte quit on this team. Hoping to see a new aggressive version of the defense that creates turnovers and actually sacks the QB.
Glad to see McCoy point out the coaching upgrade as the last two bad hires have set the team back paired with a GM who’s misses were more frequent than his success that’s why the Bucs are in their current state.

Is going to be a year to remember. I’m glad Sapp will get to enjoy it too at a deeper level. Wow McCoy has Lovie, Frazier, Collin and Sapp as his coaches. The sky is the limit for QBKILLER2.0.
I wouldn’t be surprise if we sellout our preseason game.

I don’t think they’re instantly going to be the stellar defense of old – it’s going to take some time to work out the wrinkles. But they’ll be better than they were in 2013.
McCoy is going to be in the hall of fame someday. It’s a joy just to watch him explode off the snap. If just one of the other linemen can elevate their game, this defense will terrorize QB’s as the season progresses.

I remember when Gruden came and won the Super Bowl. The knock on Chucky was that he did it with Dungy/McKay’s player. And that’s certainly true although IMO that doesn’t really take away from Gruden’s accomplishment! At the end of the day as Al Davis used to say…”Just win baby”. Gruden did that. He has a Super Bowl ring!
Now Lovie won’t have that problem There was some talk about Schiano/Dominik leaving talent behind. While it’s true they discovered a few great players like GMAC, Levonte, Doug Martin, Tim Wright and a few others, they didn’t exactly leave the L&L team with a championship team.
Nope they left Lovie with a 4-12 team. So if Lovie wins this year I hope people don’t crawl out of the woodwork and act as if he did this with any help from Schiano or Licht.
L&L have totally revamped this team using a few of the excellent players that were leftover. But if this team wins the credit belongs totally to the L&L team.

Let’s look. First and fourth went for Revis
Money from Revis went for Michael Johnson and Alterraun Verner.
So really, that first and fourth turned into Johnson and Verner
Not that Shiano picked them, but this is where the value of that first round pick went. Seems to have worked out well at the moment. Time will tell as with all transactions.

for about 5 million a year more, you could have had Michael Johnson and Alterraun Verner. Plus a 1st rounder from 2013 draft for 3 more years plus option year, and a 4th rounder 2014 draft for 3 years.

I agree picking McCoy was a no brainer, even the Raiders couldn’t have messed that pick up. Congrats Gerald you deserve it man

Joe, does it seem to you as though the people down and nfl network hold back on the love they give to the Bucs? What I mean is every buc who made it to the list didn’t get the same highlight film as almost all of the other players. I have to believe the production value of the highlight films with narraration and music are more costly then having a player like McCoy just talk to the nfl people on set. Doesn’t nfl network have to promote the teams of the nfl in the same fashion? It’s like if corporate KFC just hyped the KFC chains in Georgia and not everywhere else. Just doesn’t seem fair for the Bucs and their spotlight in the nfl.
