Father Dungy talks about regime change
You know it’s bad when man of peace Father Dungy is strongly implying One Buc Palace was a miserable work environment last season.
Father Dungy joined Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network last night and shared a few words on what’s changed in Tampa.
“Guys being excited to be there” was a major change Dungy referenced, and the former Bucs head coach talked about how impressed he is after watching installation of Jeff Tedford’s offense first-hand. Remember, Dungy tried to hire Tedford on his original Buccaneers staff in 1996.

I have to admit, I forgot about that. Dungy was very good at selecting coaches – that makes me feel a little better about Tedford.

Can anyone tell me why Chip Kelly was looked at as the “new NFL” and had high praise and was expected to do well in the NFL coming out of college but the whole world has to wait and see on Tedford? On another note… I think Josh McCown will out play Jay Cutler this season in pretty much every category ( assuming McCown stays healthy). I really doubt Cutler stays healthy all season either way. He usually doesn’t.

I think Tedford will be the pleasant surprise for the Bucs…..we spent all of our draft picks on Offense & completely revamped our line….have a new QB, WR, TE, RB….new system…..
It goes without saying that our Defense has been improved through FA….our younger players developed and a better coaching staff….
We just may surprise.

Tedford finished badly at Cal. Very badly. That’s the difference in perception. Kelly of course took the spread offense to the next level. Tedford may be a better coach after a year off to recharge his batteries, I’m hoping so at least.

Tony’s biggest problem was that he wouldn’t keep his hands of the offense. When the Glazers insisted Dungy part ways with Mike Schula, he didn’t concede.
I hope Lovie has learned restraint and let’s Tedford do his job.

It’s strange to think of how different history would be if Haslett took the def coordinator job Dungy offered him prior to Kiffin. A lot of Bucs fans don’t realize Kif was Dungy’s 2nd choice. Would the Bucs have gotten that Super Bowl win? Maybe mutable SB wins, would there have ever been the Tampa 2?

I hope Tedford works out, but do the names Steckel, Shula or Christensen mean anything to you?
Dungy was terrible at hiring offensive coordinators. If he hadn’t inherited and kept the offensive coaches in Indianapolis, he would have never won the Super Bowl.

Tony Dungy tried to hire Bruce Arians, Norv Turner, And Tom Moore while with the Bucs. In the end, he tried to make lemonade out if lemons. I think history will show he had a decent staff, just not the right players. The d had pieces to build on. The offense not so much.

Tedford was involved in a lot more in his final few years coaching college than calling plays and coaching the team. From what I understand he was doing a lot of things off the field for the school that was somewhat of a distraction. I wrote on here the other day that I saw an interview earlier this offseason of Tedford just happy as a pig in Sh!T to get back to just play calling and running an offense. Playing chess with the opposing teams defense. Just that mindset he has get’s me excited. I recall a lot of people questioning chip kelly around this time last season and then he blew up after the season started. I’m am not the least bit worried. In fact, I think you see the Bucs as your NFC south Champs come the end of the season. WHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya, but Gruden did win the Superbowl with Dungy’s D. We can all be happy for that. It obviously worked out for both coaches however it came about. I like him coming around and the other players, as it was problematic for them to come around last year.

Tedford having a bad ending in Cal is moot IMO. HC at Cal has a lot more on his plate than OC for us.
Norv Turner, Rex Ryan, Buddy Ryan, and probably Rob Ryan too. Awesome coordinators. Not so great Head Coaches.
Tedford don’t have to be better or as good as Chip Kelly. It’s possible he could be as good of an OC as Chip Kelly is of a HC.
I will admit though, when I look at Tedford I definitely have pewter colored glasses on. Just have a great feeling about that guy.

Danati74: In my opinion it was Sam Wyche’s defense. He’s the one who brought Sapp, Brooks and Lynch here. I believe they had some impact.

Was’nt it Clyde Christenson that the Glazers wanted Dungy to replace not M Shula? and Clyde tookj over play calling for Colts for years. I think he might still be working for Colts.

We’ve made lots of changes. Mostly revamped defense through free agency and revamped offense through draft. With all the changes etc., it’s the fact that we have a real coaching staff in place that will make us a force again. I am truly excited for the new season.
