Evan Dietrich-Smith: GMC Is “Scary”
May 27th, 2014Monday afternoon, Bucs center Evan Dietrich-Smith appeared with Vic Carucci and Brad Hopkins on “The Blitz,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. EDS had a lot to say about the Bucs, Lovie Smith and quarterbacks, and Joe will bring you bits and pieces the next couple of days.
Excitement filled EDS when he was asked to explain Lovie’s defense. Few on the Bucs roster know Lovie’s defense better than EDS because the former Green Bay Packers center had to battle it twice a year in the NFC North.
This is when EDS began raving about Gerald McCoy.
“Facing Lovie’s defense, it is all predicated on interior pressure and with Gerald McCoy, we haven’t been hitting in OTAs but I don’t believe I have seen anybody in the league get off the ball as fast as he does,” EDS said. “It is kind of scary and I am glad he is on my team. We watch film sometimes and the guy is awesome. I barely move my hand and the guy is going, and he is fast. He is like outrunning linebackers down the field 20 yards. He is a great guy on top of that, super awesome guy. easy to talk to and get along with.”
It’s hard for Joe not to get excited about Lovie’s defense. The Bucs, for having a downright putrid pass rush, played fairly solid defense last year. The turnover ratio was very good, which explains how rotten the offense was.
The hallmarks of Lovie are defense and turnovers, and the Bucs are further along than most 4-12 teams would be in those areas.
Barring injuries, Joe is pretty confident the once-feared Bucs defense is going to return.

We have Four players in the top 100 regardless of position and they are all on D. Old Bucs D is on its way.

Teams really will be coming after our offense to balance the game. The o-line and game plans from Tedford better be ready.
It will be great to watch our defense execute as one. At least Tedford has a top notch defense to practice against. Hopefully this will help the offense come together quicker…

“BARRING INJURIES” is my main concern…don’t feel like we have enough depth…..yet. As was discussed the other day..Seattle had over 25o roster changes their first year under Pete Carroll. We have had 68 so far. I don’t think we are done yet as far as being CLOSE to our final roster that I think may bring up some of that backup support. Just as ONE ex. 49ers had 12 draft picks. They can still only have a 53 man roster. Waiver wire will be very active

“Facing Lovie’s defense, it is all predicated on interior pressure”
Good thing Gerald is again finding himself next to sackmaster Akeem Spence, right?

Clayborn’s biggest issue, twitchy, exploding of the snap.

If we want interior pressure then Clinton McDonald will be starting next to GMC. but, anyways back on topic Pablo thinks Evan Dietrich-Smith is a scary cat. Is he going to be scared to guard Gene Atkins and Aaron Donald etc ?

BFChina, we’ve never seen Spence as a pure pass rusher, he was busy playing the tilted nose. Hopefully Cullen and Co. can get improve his pass rushing skills. He’s got the strength though.

Joe, who are the Bucs sniffing to rotate with McCoy? Spence, or are we going to be sliding McDonald over?
Euclid Cummings. Joe’s written about him a couple of times. Keep an eye out for that rookie.–Joe

I agree. Top 12 to 15 this year and top 10 or top 5 next and for the foreseeable future.

I rewatched many of last years games and it is true. GMC is already engaged his man and pushing before the rest of the D-Line even got out of their stance.

William: “Teams really will be coming after our offense to balance the game.”
Nonsense. Teams come after an offense because that’s what they’re designed to do. No one has any interest in balance. They come to win. They come to stop the other team’s offense regardless of what the defense is doing.

It will be nice to see what he can accomplish with that burst if we give defenses someone else to focus on…..I wish you health Gerald Mccoy cuz without you… fill in the blanks as you see fit Joe bucs fans

So bad for akeem Spence to get arrested and then be virtually invisible during these ota’s
Spence is not invisible. Defensive linemen can’t hit anyone in the spring. –Joe
