Bucs Dial Up McCoy’s Agent About Extension

May 25th, 2014

RevisMcCoyProBowlWell, it seems the Bucs aren’t interested in waiting to see how much cash manbeast, angry defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh can squeeze out of the Lions.

The Bucs already are on the horn with Gerald McCoy’s agent to talk about a contract extension.

Tampa Bay Times beat writer Rick Stroud broke the news last night, saying Jason Licht reached out. Stroud offered no timelines but hinted a goal could be a new deal by training camp. McCoy’s five-year rookie contract expires after the season.

So what’s McCoy worth? That’s hard to say with the rising NFL salary cap and the critical role McCoy will play in Lovie Smith’s defense. Lovie has called McCoy the “engine” on several occasions. Then there’s McCoy’s back-to-back Pro Bowls and his youth; he just turned 26.

Courtesy of dumping Darrelle Revis and other roster moves, the Bucs, per various reports, have about $10 million available under the 2014 salary cap. So the Bucs could frontload a new deal for McCoy and avoid getting pounded for a fortune in future years. He’s already set to earn $10 million plus incentives this season.

    Pablo thinks

    GMC’s New Contract :

    6 yrs / 63.5 Mill

    #HomeTownDiscount

Smart move…beat Suh & Lions to the punch…go into 2014 season feeling great.

  3. William Says:

Frontload baby! Lets take care of the ENGINE.

See even Joe is seen how getting rid of Revis is now making sense.

Rockstar Jason Licht is making sure the engine has synthetic oil. I rather pay McCoy 16 mil per season. Revis shuts down the no.1 receiver but McCoy with the rest of the d-line will shut down offense of coordinators. I rather win the battle in the trenches than shutting down the no.1 receiver. This is a no brainer.

    Go Licht Go!

  4. buc4lyfe Says:

Yea there’s no avoiding mccoy but 16 mil when you could easily throw to the opposite side against a less talented corner, i wanna see if revis’s greed is bigger than his production this year

  5. Jim Walker Says:

I never thought I would say this, but I was wrong about McCoy. He is better than Suh after 5 years in the league.

    Pablo disagrees …
    Ndamukong Suh – 27.5 sacks (1 interception/TD)
    Gerald McCoy – 18 sacks

  7. JBuc Says:

Thanks Joe! I believe this makes the point perfectly regarding Revis. Now we have money to pay the real center piece of the this defense and possibly other players that could help in the future. Ain’t life grand!

  8. William Says:

Suh played in 61 games in 4 yrs. avg. sacks per game 2.2
McCoy played 51 games in 4 yrs. avg. sacks per game 2.8

    Sorry Pablito!

  9. William Says:

Suh in 61 games forced 2 fumbles and recovered 1.
McCoy in 51 games forced 3 fumbles and recovered 2.

Not that the past equals the future but I think give McCoy 10 extra games to play and who knows how many sacks, fumbles and fumble recoveries he would gain…

Your point ? Pablo already knows that McCoy is injury prone.

  11. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@William: I agree that McCoy is better than Suh but damn, you are worse than a 5th grader in math.

If McCoy and Suh are averaging 2.8 and 2.2 sacks per game, their single season sack total would be around 32 to 48. The stat you show indicates the number of games they need to get 1 sack. So a higher number is a bad thing.

  12. Espo Says:

Why is this a competition between GMC and Suh? Let’s just ink OUR GUY and forget about what the Lions do with their money.

  13. mark Says:

    Pablo
With the new defensive system, McCoy should be more effective and a much better leader for the team.

You have your opinion, but we all know what opinions compare too.

  14. Orca Says:

    Pablo, please leave.

  15. brandonbucfan Says:

@Orca Agree Pablo please leave…go write your own post for Bucs Nation..many of us are tired of you…JOE>>>Help.. Bucs…please don’t wait for the Lions to do something stupid and force us to pay way out of line…Give McCoy his due (whatever it is) he is too valuable to this team as a great teammate and semi coach on the field and is also a GREAT pillar to the community.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He deserves it, hometown discount or not.

Although, if he refuses to give the discount (I would not hold it against him) it may drag out till after the season.

  17. ForgotAboutDre Says:

One of these days Pablo will make a post and I’ll say, “That wasn’t too stupid”. I’m still waiting for that day to come.

  18. kevin Says:

Kevin think Pablo is an idiot if he thinks suh is better than McCoy

  19. Jacko101 Says:

I’ll take McCoy any day over Suh. Both are elite but McCoy is only getting better, and now he has real help. Just Watch

  20. BoJim Says:

    Pay him what he wants.

  21. PRBucFan Says:

    Pablo that means nothing lol

Suh in these past two years where they have both actually played the entire season has been out produced by a long shot.

  22. PRBucFan Says:

Two years straight no injury after he learned proper tackling technique 😉

He tore his biceps because of “arm tackling”.

    Not a problem anymore

  23. Tnew Says:

Minimum 5 years 60 with 12 up front

  24. Tristan Berry Says:

Taking care of him now and setting the market for the topmost echelon at the position rather than waiting for Detroit to do it with Suh is just plain smart. I hope it all goes well, with both sides being slightly uncomfortable with the final result. That’s usually what a really good deal feels like to both parties.
