Mike Glennon Passed Jason Licht Test

The Bucs GM weighed in last night

Mike Glennon is the “quarterback of the future” for the Bucs. Joe is going to guess you heard that somewhere before.

Now, when future becomes present, that’s anyone’s guess. But Glennon is the future. Bank on it. Write it down. Bookmark it. Don’t believe Joe? Just ask Jason Licht.

Appearing on “Late Hits” last night, co-hosted by Alex Marvez and Bill Polian heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Licht talked all things Bucs and described how Glennon transformed from a newly demoted backup to the future of the Bucs.

“You pick up bits and pieces from different mentors you have had throughout your career whether it is Don Shula or Jimmy Johnson or Bill Belichick, even Bruce Ariens, Pete Carroll,” Licht said. “The three things — and Lovie and I were in complete agreement on this — were for a quarterback that you need to have are toughness, intelligence and accuracy. And then arm strength is a distant fourth. Mike showed during this process he has those three things and scored very high on those three things. He is an unassuming type of guy but that guys around the building really look up to him and really follow him. That’s what it came down to.”

Bucs fans will wonder aloud, ‘If the Bucs thought so much of Glennon, why bring in Josh McCown?’ The answer is simple. Neither Bucs coach Lovie Smith nor Licht knew Glennon. Lovie did know McCown and has high regard for him.

What puzzles Joe is, what did the Bucs see on film that spooked them about Glennon and how/what do they think can be corrected? Let’s be honest here, if the Bucs (i.e. Lovie) liked what they saw on tape of Glennon, McCown wouldn’t be here.

Perhaps Glennon is responding to coaching from quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo that he never did with John McNulty?

I think what spooked L&L was Joe’s constant reference to MG as a “career backup”.

That and the constant pleas for Johnny Football.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The people that count like Glennon…their careers are staked on making the right decisions…It would have been very easy to trade him….to draft a future QB but they passed.
They are giving Mike a chance to develop by giving him time and a mentor. As a fan all we can do is trust and be patient.

  3. lightningbuc Says:

This gets better and better every day!

    Irony tastes so delicious!

  4. Macabee Says:

I think what Lovie and licht are doing is a brilliant strategy in maintaining value in an asset in 2 ways:

    (1) Glennon may truly be the Bucs QB of the future and to have him sit and learn to master the position before exposing him to an unfinished (offensive line) and developing offense (Tedford’s unseen masterpiece) is wise. McCown provides time to further develop Glennon’s skills and time to prove in a new offense that could burden a developing QB (been there, seen that!).

    (2) If Glennon is not the Bucs long-term answer at QB, he has been marketed well and held in high esteem that keeps his market value high among other NFL teams and can be used later to re-invest in another perceived QB of the future!

I don’t profess to know what the future holds. Right now I do know that how he’s being handled is a smart strategy!

  5. P'cola Buc Says:

One of the main reasons we are tough on Glennon is the debacle of Josh Freeman. So much time and patience. Seemed to have the “it” factor. We waited and waited and waited…..years. Then he became a bust for us. How disappointing! We no longer wanted to wait on a QB after this. Mike Glennon came in….drafted somewhat high perhaps, shows no “it” factor. Despite his intelligence and dedication…we were looking to hedge our bets. Find that QB that looked perhaps more talented. We would do anything not to wait 4-5 years and experience another bust. Nothing is “for sure”, but we wanted to hedge our bets. Mike Glennon has been a very fortunate young man. First Schiano, now Lovie…..now it’s time to put your character and work ethic to the test. We will all be behind you. The loyal fans want and deserve a winning team. Let’s go Bucs!

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Mike Glennon passing L&L test is like saying the sun came up today!

Seriously, this has been one of the better off-seasons, Walking by and seeing the Mike Glennon Lynch Mob standing around with their mouths hanging wide open, trying to say ” what happened “.

What the lynch Mob does not understand is why the signed McCown, Last I checked every team at least carries 2 QB’s. And they knew that A solid veteran can push MG8. Now we have 2 good QB’s that are working hard, watching alot of tape and working at there craft. And that is something we have not had at One Buc Place the last 5 years.

  7. The 300's Says:

Joe, Joe, Joe. The only reason I still come here is because of the tidbits of information you provide and not your keen deductive reasoning ability.

    Two words: David Carr

Throw a second year player who got beat up constantly last year into a new offense with a new head coach / offensive coordinator / QB coach. Sound like a recipe for success?

Or bring in someone you know is a good mentor (Josh McCown), team player, and seasoned veteran. Let Glennon learn the ropes from a good role model who is very willing to teach.

I don’t know why this is so difficult to understand. Glennon will get to start when he can take the pebble from McCown’s hand.

  8. joe$sucsfan Says:

Spooked? Ill tell you what is spooky, the thought of a blind date with any of the Joes when the woman or man gets a look at you guys for the first time.
Maybe what they saw was a player they could develop and wanted a veteran for now. Lovie has said he prefers experience.

  9. William Says:

Joe says – “What puzzles Joe is, what did the Bucs see on film that spooked them about Glennon and how/what do they think can be corrected?”

IMO – They saw enough on Glennon to allow him to be around McCown a couple of years to create a solid foundation for the future. Also knowing the benefit of having Tedford and Arroyo as coaches to help him improve on mechanics and decision making will show his growth in the coming year.

Although I think Schiano controlled his decision making parameters. Glennon will have more lead way on this manner allowing him to grow according to his skills and decision making not according to only what Schiano wanted. Glennon deserves a chance to show what he can do between now and September.

This will allow L & L to make a more tangible decision on Glennon. For now the will not mess with his mind by offering him “The Future”.

If they have somebody else in mind for next years draft and Glennon does not reach expectations between now and then, we will go after a QB in the next draft.

Who knows maybe we trade for Manziel or Connor Shaw??? lol

  10. Bwf Says:

I love the plug-in words like “right now we feel “. It gives me hope that we will still get a franchise quarterback one year

  11. Captain Stagger Says:

Spooked? Reach much Joe? Were we going to roll with Glennon and Dan O?

  12. MovingBackToLargo Says:

I don’t think it has anything to do with being spooked. It’s smart really, you bring in a vet that has loads of experience to help mentor MG8 and call him a starter to force MG8 to get better through competition. Makes sense to me.

  13. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Bucs fans will wonder aloud, ‘If the Bucs thought so much of Glennon, why bring in Josh McCown?’ The answer is simple. Neither Bucs coach Lovie Smith nor Licht knew Glennon. Lovie did know McCown and has high regard for him.

Um this is a revelation? I know I’ve been saying pretty much that for months, as have others here. It’s not that difficult a scenario to grasp really, Glennon is the future and the future will be starting this season

  14. Bucfan#37 Says:

As a from the get go Glennon fan I’m glad he will get the chance to improve and develop with our Bucs. What more could I ask for from our long tall drink of water. Sure, he may be here a short time and not work out. The immediate future of the team is looking better, I can see it and get a feel for it.

  15. Bman Says:

I think what people are missing about the “naming of Josh M as starter” is this: Think about the season that Josh had just come from. There was no chance he would sign with a team that wasn’t going to give him a shot at being the starter. L & L knew they needed a better qb than Dan O to come in and compete and teach Glennon. The only way to get that qb was to tell him (Josh) “The starting job is yours to lose.” Again, that is the only way you get Josh to agree to come here!

  16. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The media aka ( Glennon lynch mob ) need to realize that at some point, Glennon will be throwing passes for the Bucs in games this season.

  17. Danati74 Says:

The MG8 Mob has to be happy. The Bucs probably lille his size too. The guy is 6’6″. So he fits the bill of all these tall players on offense. Not too many QB’s coming out of the draft were this tall. He could sit or he could start. One thing is the guy isn’t mobile. He got sacked maybe 4th to the bottom of the NFL. He could get hurt. That is probably another reason McCown is here. A veteran that you can plug n play. Just like he did last year. This new regime is pretty smart non the less. I think almost everyone has forgotten about Shiano.

  18. buc4lyfe Says:

Like him or not which i don’t….if lovie says he’s the future and your a buc fan then what can you do but root for him to succeed, so far I’m not impressed so after a year or two of sitting behind a veteran and learning i like it because there won’t be this hoping against hope like Freeman that he’ll come Around, if sits out a year then gets in and leads us to the worst ranked offense again he’ll be gone, no hoping, no more waiting he’ll get the Freeman/davin/penn

  19. Bucfever40 Says:

Joe, I think you’re stuck on the notion that L & L didn’t like what they initially seen in Glennon and therefor opted to pursue McCown as their starter. I disagree, just like Licht said, they simply didn’t know Glennon enough to put all their eggs in his basket, what they did see, was a rookie qb, that was thrust into a situation that wasn’t natural, a young qb without the benefit of a true veteran qb to help guide him along, so while they could, they brought in McCown as that veteran presence, had Lovie not crowned McCown the starter in March, I think it would weaken your argument in a big way. Bottom line, signing McCown and naming him the starter that early, was simply an insurance policy, they needed time to really digest what Glennon was all about, at the very least, L & L has the 2 qb’s battle it out in training camp and let the cream rise to the top, and thus far, they really like what Glennon brings to the mix, 13 starts and a tremendous amount of upside, naming McCown the starter (in March) doesn’t amount to squat in the big scheme of things, ’cause either way we end up with the best QB now, AND in the future.

  20. Eric Says:

    Don’t see it.

    Toughness and intelligence maybe.

Accuracy and arm strength no. Not compared to the good quarterbacks in the league.

My list would begin with leadership and ability to bring team back. Don’t see that either.

But, nobody pays me for my opinion on such matters.

    ————–

Yes, L & L are so incompetent in their jobs that they base their decisions on editorials made on fan websites.

  24. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Eric… nobody listens to you because you thought Johnny Manziel was the answer.

On a side note… most comments on JBF about Glennon are strictly to give Joe a hard time about his Manziel proclaimations and daily crow feedings… the guys who give Joe a hard time don’t necessarily believe Glennon is the long term solution… they just love to needle Joe.

But, Glennon was better than the QBs available in this years draft… and free agency… the Bucs signed a guy that may be better too… so the Bucs made all the right moves in 2014.

Next year, if the Bucs trade the kitchen sink for an Andrew Luck type prospect… then I’m sure fans would cheer that too. But it’s not 2015 yet.

  25. passthebuc Says:

The answer could be as simple as Glennon has talent and just needed polish.

  26. BucsFanSince89 Says:

I’m so tired of hearing wanna be fans talk about MG8 like he’s a virus that need to be gone before it kills everybody in Tampa Bay! Is more ironic that half of the idiots that comment on these blogs have no clue of what football is or what is required in a team system. I don’t understand why people are so shocked that Lovie made McCown the starter when is the most genius move he has made this season! Let me explain something GREAT QB’s like the ones usually mentioned on the regular Brees, Newton, Brady, Rodgers, etc are on record to say that if it wasn’t for their veterans counterparts they wouldn’t had made them the players they are now! So why does it have to be different with Lovie? Because WE want to win now? It’s ridiculous to read some of you and your only defense is he doesn’t have the “it” factor! Based on what? on your personal opinion of you thinking that you know football because you watch it on Sunday, Monday or Thursday all of a sudden you guys are experts? Do you honestly think that Lovie and Licht going to put up their reputation regardless of it been smokescreen or not? That’s a reputation loss from their players and team organizations to deal with the Bucs in the future. I guess if we have a loosing season we’ll have Fire Lovie signs all the way down “Old Dale Mabry Hwy” huh? Top NFL organizations are doing the same thing Lovie is doing, developing players! Yet is a dumb idea to do it in Tampa Bay. What if he is the QB of the future? What if he does take it to the Super Bowl? What then? Is your ignorance of football going to continue or people are going to shut up and say “jeez I sure don’t know anything about football, let me be quiet”! The Glennon haters the more I read their ridiculous comments the more I know they don’t know about football. There are many factors to developing a player one of them is great coaching stuff and great system to impart on these players. I know you heard it a MILLION times this player is best at this technique or will fit best at this system with this team and coaching stuff. It’s part of player evaluation for crying out loud!!! Yet the haters want to say “NOPE he’s a back up QB, he is not the QB of the future, He will not be an elite QB, etc etc and again based on what? A poor system that was giving to him by a poor coaching staff in ONE YEAR? Come on people you really need to give players a developing curve! We wanted Glennon out of here before he could even take a practice snap! How is that development? Yes we want to win now, I have felt the pain over the past 12 years! But I’ve also felt the pain of some of our players let go and end up tearing up the league. So what’s the downfall? We get a bust player? Is better to face him down the road and light our asses on fire because NOW he got that “it” factor We couldn’t wait on because we wanted to win now? I guess trying a WINNING FORMULA is not for Bucs fans! How about waiting for a game to be played to voice your opinion. Even then I’m sure THE EXPERTS will have a back up solution or how to fix the problem because at the end of the day is their jobs not OURS!

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

Bringing in McCown was an all-around smart move regardless of Glennon. Everyone knows Glennon was over his head last year as well as limited in weaponry. Orlovsky certainly wasn’t going to wow anyone.
Now, perhaps Glennon can hone his skills a bit without the pressure of being the #1 guy. You never know, he could turn out to be “that guy”!
I’m rooting for him. Go Bucs!

  30. Eric Says:

    @bucfan 237

Has something happened where it has been established that Johnny Football was not the answer?

  31. Miguel Grande Says:

I would like to read that the Giraffe is practicing to throw left handed because every DC in the league knows that he can’t complete a pass when moving to his left.

When he’s stationary or moving to the right, 70%.

    Moving to the left, 3%.

If he’s the QB of the future, Tedford must teach him to be a southpaw.

Just think of all the Toys’R’Us commercials he’ll get.

  32. Vico Says:

How much coverage can we get on our 2nd string QB?

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

@BucsFanSince89- Nice rant!!! I’ve been questioning the same comments myself. Like how do all these people “know” that he’s not the guy and yet, with every breath, the GM and HC profess that he is. I’ve never seen such vitriol for a guy who wasn’t supposed to start, didn’t have all the weapons, and still managed to put up decent numbers despite being on his back. Really it’s just typical Bucs fans. When things are rolling EVERYONE’s a fan. When they’re not….
@Vico- Every QB is one hit away from the DL, including McCown. I hope it doesn’t happen, but you never know.

  34. Schlomie Bupkes-Mohel Says:

The Stuttering-Stammering-show-host was patting himself on the back yesterday for proclaiming that he was right when predicting Dilfer would never be that great of a QB. He stated that he was the “only one that knew” that Dilfer didn’t have what it takes. Yeah, right, I think about 15 million people new that Dilfer had limited capabilities. Ironically, he didn’t expand on the fac that he was wrong about Chris Simms, Joey Galloway and Josh Freeeman. He was positive that D. Brooks would go on to do great things for the Patriots and that Marty St. Louis would not contribute to the Rangers. He can’t stand when people blog about him but he loves using his microphone as a conduit to slander people,

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t buy it. “toughness, intelligence and accuracy” are not the only things.

How about being a quick thinker so he doesn’t hold onto the ball too long? How about movement in the pocket? How about instincts?

We’ll see how much of the future he is next year.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And meanwhile we waste time finding out the truth.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

@Bonzai- Hopefully those things will be learned with the benefit of not having to be “the guy” right now.
We wasted 5 years on Free, lets hope we figure it out sooner.

  38. Barry Says:

MG8 has the locker room. His players love him. They follow him. MG8 a true professional. You won’t be seeing him at the Mons making it rain. NooooSir

  39. Nate Says:

umm bucs fan man and everybody else stil bringing up freeman….at least he had a 10-6 season with NO RECIEVERS ..if winslow doesnt get called for a fake PI …packers out we are in but people forget that….SMH..explain that…

give glennon a chance but to say 5 yrs wasted with free ill rather do that and have 2 in 5 good seasons

than go thru ANOTHER 4-5 win season ..in the words of the rock…..”you can bet your monkey ass that THEY WILL DRAFT A QB NEXT YEAR!!!!

  40. "Skyline" Says:

    Brett Smith was cut.

@Bonzai, they didn’t say that was all. They just said the things they looked for was. They even said arm strength was distant 4th. I would also argue that “quick thinker” goes under the intelligent category.

  41. d-money Says:

Is not that hard to figure out.

McCown is a guy that can start for you but isn’t going to pitch a fit if he ends up being the back up.

They werent’ sure what they had in Glennon so McCown is the perfect insurance policy.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “Skyline” Says:
“I would also argue that “quick thinker” goes under the intelligent category.”

You would be wrong in that assumption, bro.

Intelligence is the level of knowledge and ability to add to it.

Quick thinking is the speed that knowledge is put into action.

For example, Glennon “knows” the plays (or will know), but his ability to quickly determine which option is least likely to cause a turnover or sack is something totally different.

  43. PRBucFan Says:

McCown thinks highly of Glennon, i’m sure he’s promoted his potential to the coaches as well.

  44. Bucfever40 Says:

Miguel Grande- Uhm, I remember clearly MG against a strong Seattle team, running laterally to his left and pinning a dart to his TE in the endzone, I say if you can do it once, you can do it a thousand times, THAT’s not a problem of his.

  45. lurker Says:

a problem of his is no arm strength. he threw ducks deep. a professional who throws ducks is not a good qb. his receivers bailed him out as much as they dropped passes because he rarely hit them in stride and they often had to wait or come back on the deep balls. also, another problem is immobility. funny how the same people say it’s idiotic to say he will suck after he only had 13 games, but they say he is great based on 13 games. lovie don’t know qb’s.

  46. IdahoBucsfan Says:

You can find a negative spin for every positive word spoken! Joe finds a cloud in every silver lining! GO BUCS!

    “The answer is simple.” -Joe

Joe how come the answer was not simple to you 2 months ago when I suggested it?

Joe, I’m so glad you just STOLE my reasoning for them keeping Glennon. I told you this same shyte when they signed McCown, but no. No you wanted to think that it implied that Glennon was toast. So now you come up with this clever reasoning TWO months after I tried to tell you.

You do some great reporting Joe, but as far as reading between the lines, you can’t read a damn thing right.

I’m so glad you’re finally catching up Joe. Sheesh!
    How’s that for schooling?

  49. Bucsfanman Says:

@Nate- Sorry to come off as a Freeman basher. I actually liked the kid until he melted down into a shell of a QB. I really thought he was going to be the guy.
What I meant was as opposed to finding out 5 years down the road whether your QB is capable of maintaining their senses with the day to day of the NFL, perhaps we can shorten that time with better coaching and sensible assessments of their talents.
Like many, I want to win. Like it or not they think they have their guy(we’ll see) and we have to wait and watch.
All that being said, don’t apologize for Freeman. He made his bed and frankly, he’s a BIG reason the Bucs were terrible last year. Don’t get it twisted!

  50. Mike J Says:

No ”QB of the Future” endorsement of Glennon until AFTER rd. 1, I noticed. I think the Bucs would have selected Bortles had he been there at 7.
