Pre-Draft, Glennon Advised He Was The Future

The Bucs’ named “quarterback of the future” said today that Lovie Smith called him twice in the days before the draft to advise not to believe the rumors and hype of the Bucs drafting a quarterback.
Yes, the Mike Glennon Mob can take a break from printing “19 and 9” bumper stickers and celebrate the decision of the Lovie Smith regime.
Glennon acknowledged that Josh McCown is the main man but there’s a competitive spirit among the quarterbacks. He called reports of six teams wanting to trade for him “irrelevant.”
“They were open with me, both Jason [Licht] and Lovie told me that there plan was right now Josh was the guy, and moving forward they felt like I was. So they were open with me from the get-go,” Glennon said. “And all these rumors were going around, Lovie called me twice to tell me what he’s watching on the TV isn’t true, he doesn’t know where it’s coming from. And so, there is no reason to have any doubt about it.”
So there you have it. Glennon is the man.
Joe will have more details in his practice notes later, but Glennon had a solid day, even displaying the infamous “cannon” on a deep overthrow of wide receiver Russell Shepard, along with rifle-like pop on a ball completed to Skye Dawson for a 15-yard gains.

Let’s face it..sports fans ALWAYS complain…even when their team wins a SB or World Series they will find something to complain about. BUT SOMETIMES, you just have to let some things go. Right,wrong,like it or not what we have this year is Josh and MG8. Let’s hope that after they saw MG8 in Minicamp that they were right that he was better than any one they would have drafted PLUS he has a years experience. Let’s hope they are right. As an aside, if you watch Mike and Mike in the morning, Greenie thinks the Bucs will win the NFC South. Don’t know if I can go that far, but I still believe we are headed in the right direction! GO BUCS!

Well there you have it. He is still here. After reviewing every inch of tape the pros must have found just as most people said. Unlike our grandstand know it all experts. The people that like to blame him for the loss. Or who like to say it is his fault said every game the team can’t score in the second half Well Lovie said good bye o line. he had no weapons and was put in to early. Lovie said many things you did not see here. Mikes’ problems can be corrected with coaching and from a vet teaching him.

Sounds to me like some one (or 3 we know) owes an apology to a certain, mature (for the way he has conducted himself under very trying difficult time) and capable young quarterback. He sure has conducted himself a lot better than certain media talking heads. That includes the one who loves the polka and the other who loves Irish beer. Keep making fun and he will make more look like bigger jackass than they do now.

Completely off topic but helps to make my point.
Riding home from work today, I passed a bunch of first-graders playing tackle football. So naturally, I challenged them to a game. I’ll tell you those little bastards couldn’t tackle me (5’11″, 230 lbs), and I won easily.
My point is: Throw out ALL of the other excuses, throw out rookie status, throw out poor coaching, throw out 3rd string teammates, throw out poor play selection etc., etc.
What matters most is the OPPONENT you play, and how good they are at the time you play them! Many blogs list the strength of schedule based on what the opponent’s record was in the preceding season, which is ludicrous, since teams change dramatically from season to season due to injuries, coaching changes, new players, players maturing, and even luck. For example, the Atlanta Falcons were 13-3 in year 2012, and would have been predicted to be a formidable opponent in 2013, but yet they went 4-12. Even the lowly Bucs led by MG8 were able to beat them once.
A much better estimate of the strength of schedule is to look at the opponent’s record for the year in which you played them, NOT the year before. So let’s look at Andrew Luck. In 2012, the Indianapolis Colts faced teams with an aggregate record of 113-133 (for the year 2012), which was tied for 28th EASIEST in the whole league. Great player helped out considerably by playing an easier schedule.
The MG8 led Bucs played the 17th ranked schedule based on the 2012 records of their opponents. But in the actual 2013 season the Bucs beat the 4-12 Falcons once; beat the 6-10 Bills; beat the 7-9 Lions, and beat the 8-8 Dolphins. They also played and lost the remainder to the 4-12 Falcons, 7-9 Rams, the 8-8 Jets, the 10-6 Eagles, the 10-6 Cardinals,the 11-5 Saints twice, the 12-4 49er’s, the 12-4 Patriots, and the 12-4 Panthers twice, as well as once to the 13-3 Seahawks. Several of those teams made the playoffs, and/or were ranked in the top ten defensively. Their aggregate record was 147-109, which is THE Toughest schedule of all the teams in the NFL for 2013! Mike Glennon did extremely well against such a tough schedule. Ask Peyton Manning if it matters WHO you play, and at what time of the year.
My last point concerns Josh McCown, and his 13 TDs vs. only 1 INT. Two of those five games were against Minn and Dall, where he threw for 6TDs and 0 INTS, against the 31st and 32nd ranked defenses overall for 2013.

I really like Glennon. He has certainly earned my respect after the situation he was thrown into last season. Only Bucs fans really can understand how tough a situation he was given as a rookie IMO. I would like to see him put on some more weight though…lol. I mean its not like he is ever going to be a scrambler. Put some weight on this kid so he can stand in the pocket and take hits a little better. Lovie and Jason calling him “The Future” is the most important think the Bucs did in this offseason. I do not think he had won over the lockerroom last season given that he was Schiano’s boy. Lovie backing Glennon is huge because we all know how the players trust Lovie.

@tickrdr..good point…I have said for a long time that the timing of who you play and when you play a team is SOO important in an NFL schedule that only plays 16 regular scheduled games. This year the BUCS open with 2 at home. Beat Carolina and the Cardinals and we could have something with some tough road games coming up. Lose one or two of those and anything could happen going into a tough road schedule

Bonzi How do you or anyone else know what the future holds for Glennon if he is not given the opportunity to learn from his mistakes and grow into his position just like another football player. They all need a chance. That’s what has pissed a lot of us off, a lot, and it seems like you too, wrote him (8) off when dog and radio talking heads wanted to run him out of town with schiano. They said they liked him, but their words betrayed them and made it very clear they would really like to see him traded and off our team. If he’s not a bust, how will you look then?

Whoa imagine that… The second year QB is gonna get at least some time behind a seasoned vet to develop. McCown can be a game manager, Mike Cannon will be a game changer if he’s brought along the right way.
Look at least year for Cannon all while we were told by Shiano “we don’t need to work on fundamentals for our QB, this is the NFL…..”
Mike Cannon will be taking over as starter about the same time Johnny Cleveland is looking for a new gig.
I get a tingle thinking about finally bringing along a guy with talent.
There are a few guys who can start the rookie year and have a good career… although, the majority do better with a few red Shirt years.

This is hilarious. Nobody knows (not me, not Joe, not Couch, not Bonzai, not 1987, not lightning…. etc, etc… nobody) what will become of Glennon in the future. Will he be good? Will he never be good? Is he the future? Future what? Backup? Starter? All-Pro? HOF?
And yet some are already requesting apologies from those that think he isn’t the future of much of anything, stating that Lovie and Licht have proclaimed that he is. So, it’s not possible that a HC and GM can be wrong? It’s not possible that in 6 months, a year?, that the staff realizes the mistake (if it is one, speculation here) and drafts or signs a new QB of the future and Glennon is never heard of again?
Might be a good idea to temper the victory dance a bit, as it might be those doing the dancing that look like fools when all facts are known rather than those being asked to recant now before September, before a game, before a season. Never forget the old saying “He who laughs last, laughs best”.

I mean no disrespect. You are a great poster. Even if I disagree with you on the whole Glennon thing, you bring well thought out respectful posts, and I appreciate that, as I’m sure most MGMers do.
That being said, I have one rebuttal.

My problem with that is, for the last 4 months, all we’ve been reading is Glennon sucks this and Glennon sucks that. And QB in the draft. 32nd ranked offense. Statue, Geoffrey, and all that other stuff. When rumors were around that we were going to draft a QB, there was lots of victory dancing going on. When a story like this comes out, I think a victory dance is warranted.

Glennon is getting his opportunity, one he earned. Any other sports town would have been happy to have a young rookie who was ROY, setting NFL and team rookie records. Not our small town, a town who’s never had a franchise QB. Media in this town and fans should’ve embraced Glennon, giving him his due, his shot. Instead they went after him, shameful IMO.

All very good points, and well taken. I think most of the MGM, are also not sure what the future holds either, though I cannot speak for the others. For me personally, I think that MG8 played remarkably well when compared with most of the first round qbs chosen in the last twenty years, as posted ad nauseam by me. As posted recently, that performance is even more remarkable given all of the other circumstances of the last year, most notably playing against the toughest schedule in the league for 2013. At the very least, that performance deserves at least a shot to compete; nothing more, but certainly nothing less.
We’ll all have our favorite players based on our opinion, but I respect yours! and may the best man win!

This is true, no arguing the facts. However, let’s eliminate the 12-4 Patriots , one 11-5 Saints, and the 8-8 Jets (Freeman starts). Of the 4 wins, only one defense was in the top half of the league in pass defense (Bills).
In that game (Bills), Glennon was 9 of 25 for 90 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT. Bobby Rainey broke an 80 yard TD to open the game, which was enough to win the game based on our defense. Our defense had 7 sacks and forced 5 turnovers. On offense, we had 11 “drives” of 8 yards or less (4 negative yard drives), and scored 2 FGs on drives of 6 and -2 (set up by defense). One of Glennon’s interceptions was 3 plays after our defense got an interception setting us up in Bills territory killing a prime opportunity. Now I’m not complaining about a win. I love a win. But how much did Glennon really win that game for us? He didn’t capitalize on 3 opportunities set up by our defense (2 FGs and an INT)
As for the games he lost against teams that were decent… 4 were top 10 pass defenses (Seahawks, Saints, Panthers, 49ers). The Seahawks game gave him the best rating (123.1). The other 3 games were poor for Glennon against great pass defenses, so we won’t talk about those, let’s take his best game against a great pass defense. The first half was great. 10-11 for 124 yards and 2 TDs, we had a 21-7 lead at the half (one TD pass was from James). That’s where the good ends. At the half. We had one drive to open the 3rd that led to a FG, after that the most we could gain per drive was 24 yards. Mike James was 17 for 82 in the 1st half and 11 for 76 in the 2nd half. He remained consistent. Glennon’s 2nd half was 7 of 12 for 44 yards. I can’t say Glennon lost the game, our defense did that giving up 415 yards and 3 2nd half scores. But Glennon didn’t “win” it either. He had the running game going. He was hitting a high % of passes. Yet, he couldn’t “win” it. Didn’t lose it, but…
You see, I don’t take the season as a conglomeration, there are individual games. Each game shows something, either positive or negative or both. If you don’t watch the game again, it’s hard to see if those #s are poor coaching decisions, poor QB decisions, poor QB play, etc. But watching the game, you can tell. It was exciting (yet disappointing) to watch the first time. Knowing the outcome and taking the emotion out watching again and again, you can tell what we mean when we don’t see “it”.

And, after that “mini-article”… I agree, we each have our opinions, I respect yours and others as well. I do cheer for the team, and if Glennon is the QB of that team, then I’m cheering for him. As of now (and until I see otherwise), I’m just cheering for McCown to start and a QB to fall to us next year. By next year pre-draft, I may have a different opinion.

Let’s call it a nice drive and score. Spike the ball, do a little dance and get ready to play defense. The game is not over, for anyone. Glennon is, and will continue to, fight for a starting job… and then will continue to fight to keep it. If he becomes All-Pro and the Bucs win playoff games, we all win. I would love to be wrong about him. Even if it’s a 60-40 chance he’ll be “the future” and decent.. I’d rather have 50-50 we have a great, elite QB and 60-40 pretty darned good and 80-20 decent “future”. I believe we had better odds with someone else and would rather have started towards that this year rather than next. That said, I still love our draft picks.

As usual a cogent and excellent response. In some respects, I agree with you, that MG8 did NOT play great and did NOT win any of those games against those good teams, but in fact that is exactly my point. Not even Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos played very well against that elite Seattle team, and he certainly did not win that game despite his Hall of Fame credentials. In fact not many teams nor their QBs played well against those elite defenses of all those playoff teams. But for a rookie with limited help, ……well? Atlanta played a lot of those same teams, but only managed to beat StL,Buff,Wash,and Tampa Bay…….. even with Matt Ryan at QB; one of those “franchise QB” guys. Shouldn’t he have been expected to carry his team past those elite teams single-handedly just like our rookie QB should have? Doesn’t he have “it” anymore?

The Bucs had a moderately better defense that forced significantly more turnovers and a significantly better rushing offense than Atlanta. Also, Ryan has proven ability to win games against the odds, Glennon (in his brief time) has not. Ryan led the Falcons to the playoffs as a rookie.

Its hard to grade Glennon based only on the Seattle game, he might get compared to P Manning by “accident” indirectly on a totally different situation. Even after the loss, just because of who he was playing I consider that Glennon’s best game.
With that said, I agree bambam, and I would add that imo he only was more than a game-manager against Detroit. That is one out of 13. It is blinding because after the chucky era, as fans we have held on to any little hope of winning our division. Most of us were on the youngry and/or toes on the line wagons. It was easy because the bucs almost made the playoffs with both regimes, only to fall into embarassment right after.
No discipline sounded good when that helped the team come from behind every time until the benn’ed around type of ideas came along. Then toes on the line seemed to be working when Martin (a steal) was running over Raiders like it was 2002. But the next year chaos took over and not even Revis could help. Then that game happened against the best team in the NFC undefeated at home. They didn’t know what hit them, they were playing the worst (at that moment) team in the NFC and losing by 14 at halftime. It was surreal. So much that I can start to understand how someone can think it was Glennon’s magic. But it wasn’t.
I think it is unfair to say MG never had a shot, he did get a shot because Schiano did bet all in on him. Vjax was fighting for all of his weakly thrown balls and 2nd and 3rd string RBs were running their hearts out so he could have a chance to look for vjax. And it worked a couple of times. But to say that team was not playing to give the kid a chance is a big big lie. I hope he gets better and forces me and anyone who agrees to accept a judging mistake. I don’t think he’ll outplay McCown this season, though. And if Tedford’s offense shows promise, I hope he gets a tailored QB for his system.

I also want to add, that by the time last years bucs started performing they were out of the playoff race, and were playing so that they wouldn’t lose their jobs if a new regime would take over, like it did. Martin was out, Williams was out and their greatest hope (still a small one) was the Glennon/schiano project to work out. That was the pressure on Glennon, and most of us were hopeful it could work out but it didn’t. MG has had plenty of chance in the NFL.

CF There have been players with better skills than MG that wished they had 13 games to prove themselves, even a couple relevant games can be enough. MG had a bunch of irrelevant games, nothing to lose and still didn’t show the “true franchise-leading abilities” discussed by some people on this site. Truth is, I’m hoping for the best with Glennon, but he has not proven a thing. The moment Lovie said “quarterback of the future” the MGM started bragging left and right that Mike was our franchise QB.
Lovie has never been able to recognize a great QB on his teams. He has never successfully built an offense. Yet, MGMers are claiming Glennon is great because Lovie said he’s the future.
Ironically, not one of them felt he should remain starter and the Bucs NOT sign McCown.
The way I see it, there are these sure things:
Lovie, Licht and Tedford felt Glennon should be demoted.
Lovie labels Glennon the QB of the future, yet DOES NOT label him the starter, which tells me they wanted a certain QB in the draft and lost out on him, and so Lovie is saying nice things about Glennon.
Lovie and Licht probably promised a starting role to get McCown to sign.
Maybe you guys don’t get it, but the players do. A player has to earn his spot to get props. It’s that simple. Getting it by default is not earning it.
And that’s what Glennon is doing. Getting the nod by default.
Bring in a valid QB to compete? Then I would be giving props to the kid.
